In honor of Pride month here in the US, I wanted to bring you a genuine conversation with a number of dear friends of mine about our own discoveries about our places in the LGBTQIA+ universe. We’re having a frank, open discussion about our experiences, our joys, our struggles, and so much more. Regardless of how you (or those in your lives) identify, these issues touch all of us, and I want to help bring greater understanding to my community and to all those whose lives you touch. I didn’t build my business on social media - I built it by speaking on stages. My big dream was to be impactful like Oprah, and though I had no mentor, I figured it out. I spoke at AVON and for Victoria’s Secret execs. For Capital One and at Women’s conferences.  I LOVED IT! I made an impact, I made money, AND, nearly every time I spoke, I got clients! But then… I kept seeing all of these other coaches making $1 Million in 6 months! I felt so inadequate. Ads started screaming at me on Facebook: Get 10,000 followers! Get my cash coach system! My brain start obsessing about social media posts and (ugh -) Likes. I felt like a loser and even though my business did “well” I felt rotten. When companies shut down during the pandemic, speaking was off the table - So I hired an expensive coach who got me to raise my prices. It was fun and I was successful, but I was still anxious. My mind dreaded the social media hustle. I felt bored of all the coaching. And empty. I got into this to teach Happiness, but I was unhappy. So I hit the RESET button. Every single one of us was born for purpose. Research shows that when we’re younger, our search for purpose can be an exciting adventure, but after a certain age this same search can lead to an increased incidence of anxiety and depression, and even suicidal tendencies. More and more, people are seeking lives full of meaning, lives in which they’re making a difference, and for a growing number of people this becomes even more important than increased salaries. As Abraham Maslow explained over 50 years ago in his Hierarchy of Needs, once we’ve satisfied our basic needs, the final, highest need is that of self-actualization, giving of ourselves to something larger, inner fulfillment. Short-term happiness only goes so far; we need something deeper and more long-lasting. We need purpose. For me, knowing my purpose has helped me weather a number of incredibly difficult personal experiences. Even on the crappiest of days, I know my life has greater meaning, and that’s the knowledge that I want you to have as well. One of the reasons that our search for purpose is so hard is that we’re thinking about it all wrong. I clear up a number of misconceptions about purpose and introduce a new way of thinking about it that opens us up to a whole new world of possibilities. In addition, the words we use when discussing and thinking about purpose is often part of the problem, and I provide you with a new vocabulary around purpose. This isn’t just a semantic change, but reflects a much deeper truth about purpose that we all need to understand. By teaching you the basic ideas of what purpose is, and what it isn’t, I help you get on the path to uncovering your own purpose. I am joined by my dear friend, Louisa Jewell, expert on self-doubt and self-confidence, author, professor, speaker, and founder of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association. Louisa starts out by explaining why some self-doubt can actually be a good thing. Chronic self-doubt, self-doubt when there really is no justification for it, when it’s holding you back, this is when something needs to be done about it, when it needs to be released. Louisa also addresses confidence, and in particular the action-oriented type of confidence called self-efficacy. In addition, Louisa and I discuss how self-efficacy relates to positive self-fulfilling prophecies. Self-doubt and self-worth differ greatly between men and women, and Louisa shares her own theories as to why women tend to have more self-doubt than men, and what women can do about it to combat their own self-doubt. She introduces Peace at 6, So What?, and some tools to start shifting one’s own beliefs from “I can’t” to “I can!” by gathering supporting evidence. Our brains naturally possess a negativity bias, and we discuss ways to combat that. Building one’s competence is a great way to build your self-confidence, and there are always baby steps that you can take to build your competence. Break your goals into smaller, manageable tasks as a way to get started and start to feel success and forward progress. A staggering number of people suffer from anxiety. For some it flares up at more stressful times in their lives, and for others it’s a constant presence, a constant struggle. I’ve talked many times about my own challenges with anxiety over the years, as well as panic attacks that I’ve suffered, most recently the almost daily attacks that I dealt with for months after my second miscarriage. February 13 is International Day of Self Love and Galentines Day, which is a day to honor and celebrate your friends. So many women are used to giving to and taking care of others, but we don’t always take care of ourselves as we need and deserve, and today’s episode is all about how we can take care of and love ourselves. We’ve been raised to think that taking care of and loving ourselves is selfish, but the opposite is true: Taking care of ourselves is “other-ish,” and I explain why (it has to do with a concept called social or emotional contagion). It’s easy to love ourselves and treat ourselves kindly when things are going well, but it’s very tough when we’ve done something we regret or we feel foolish or embarrassed about our actions. And for those who have tendencies towards self-loathing, your first step should be moving towards self-tolerance, then “self-okayness,” then self-acceptance, and self-like, on your way to self-love and self-celebration! It’s a journey, but a critical one. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 048: The Meaning and Importance of Self-Love and How to Attain It

Women play a huge role in our society and our economy as a whole, and in our families as well. In many ways, women in a traditional heterosexual couple and family dynamic are the leaders of the family. And yet, too many women suffer from low self-confidence. On average, this is an issue that tends to adversely affect women more than women. Why would women who have every reason to be confident still feel so insecure? We all pick up things from a wide variety of sources –- our parents, our families, our peers, the media, and elsewhere -– and some of this can be very harmful, although that may not have been the intention. Some women learn that if they appear too confident they’ll be perceived as arrogant, whereas many men don’t seem to have this limiting belief. A KPMG study showed that 86% of women recalled being taught to be nice to others when they were growing up, while only 34% recall being taught to share their point of view. Taken too far, this can lead to being overly concerned with others to our own detriment, valuing the wellbeing and success of others above ourselves. As it turns out, these “soft skills” of compassion and empathy are turning out to be more and more in demand in leaders as it’s becoming better understood that they’re important qualities in successful leaders. And so as women, we should really embrace our own kindness and compassion and empathy and recognize them as critical strengths; we don’t need to be aggressive and arrogant and hard in order to be successful. In Episode 22 (http://carinrockind.com/episode22) I talked all about fear, where it comes from, and what we can do about it. Some of our lack of confidence stems from a fear that developed growing up, that, in order to be loved and accepted by our family or our peer group, we need to do things in ways in which others approve. Listening to this fear made us comfortable as a young child, but now it holds us back. We need to question fears like these and learn to listen to our own inner wisdom instead of that old fear voice. Richard Petty, a researcher at Ohio State, conducted a massive study of 150,000 people and he found that as confidence increases, so does income. Petty defines confidence as “the stuff that turns thoughts into actions.” He also showed a fascinating link between our physical actions and postures, and our own confidence. To broaden our understanding I discuss the definitions of self-confidence and self-esteem. I also discuss several studies that have shown that women in medical school and in nursing showed significantly lower confidence than their male counterparts despite having comparable levels of competence. A study conducted by HP showed that men were willing to apply for jobs for which they were qualified for 60% of the requirements, whereas women would only apply if they were qualified for 100% of the requirements. All of this is to say that confidence, not competence, is the issue for many women. The best way to build your confidence in your competence is to get out there and start doing, start taking actions. They don’t have to be huge actions, but start somewhere, start where you are, start with some small actions, recognize and value and celebrate your actions, and build on that. All of this is to say that confidence, not competence, is the issue for many women. The best way to build your confidence in your competence is to get out there and start doing, start taking actions. They don’t have to be huge actions, but start somewhere, start where you are, start with some small actions, recognize and value and celebrate your actions, and build on that. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 024: Why Women Struggle With Low Confidence and What They Can Do About It

Despite my work uplifting women and doing motivational speaking, and my experience studying and teaching positive psychology, I have a number of fears that I deal with regularly. I share some of my fears in this episode, and I invite you to think about some of the things that you fear. Fears are not only natural, they serve a purpose in terms of evolutionary biology. I discuss negativity bias and the “fear brain,” also known as the “reptilian brain,” and how our ancestors needed to perceive threats in their environments in order to survive. In addition, the “fear brain” is physically closer, more closely connected to our brain stem and our central nervous system, which means that a relatively small amount of fear can feel huge and can impact us greater than the more rational part of our brain. A principle called confirmation bias describes the way that our brain notices and gives more weight to things that support our fears, and dismisses or gives less weight to things that contradict our fear. Our brain does this with lots of our deeply held beliefs, but it’s certainly true of our fears. Fear served as a protection mechanism for our distant ancestors, keeping us safe, but now fear can serve to hold us back, prevent us from taking healthy risks, and keep us from going after our dreams. Fear can keep us small, and you were not born to be small! Carol Dweck, a researcher from Stanford, does a lot of work with mindset and identifies two main types: Fixed mindset and growth mindset. Put simply, a fixed mindset believes that either you’re athletic or you’re not, either you’re smart or you’re not. A growth mindset believes that you can become more athletic with practice, that you can become smarter through effort. People with growth mindsets tend to become more successful because they don’t see certain setbacks as failures, they see them as opportunities for growth. People with a fixed mindset are more likely to be paralyzed by fear, not wanting to be seen as failing at anything, and end up living small and live a less happy life. If you are afraid of failure, think about it this way: There is no such thing as failure, because we can always learn from the experience, which will inform our next efforts and help make them more successful. Another technique for combatting fear is to detach from the outcome, which I address in this podcast as well, using one of my own fears as an example. I wish I could tell you that you can stop feeling fear, but that’s just not the case. Instead, the big question here is, what can you do about it? How do we exist with fear but not let it take the driver’s seat, not let it control us and control our actions? We all have dreams. Sometimes, though, we tell ourselves that our dreams are ridiculous or frivolous or just too far-fetched to bother trying to make happen. I’ve certainly done this myself with a number of dreams in my life, and when I’ve suppressed and ignored my dreams I’ve just made myself miserable, sometimes without even understanding where my unhappiness was coming from. But I’m committed to listening to my dreams and making them a reality, and I want to help you to do the same. A big dream of mine has been to live in NYC. I lived there for several years but I was giving up on my dream by leaving there to come to Philly, and ever since it’s been eating at me. I had all sorts of reasons why I couldn’t live in NYC, and yet, it was still a burning dream of mine, and by denying this dream I ended up feeling small. I had to figure out a way to get past this and bring my dream to life. I also talk about the “fear brain,” the part of us that tries to keep us safe, that means well but inhibits our willingness to take chances, to take risks, and often, to go after our dreams. Our fear brain tries to stop us before we even get started on something new, and we all have this. It’s biologically hard-wired into us, and for good reasons having to do with evolution and self-preservation, but it doesn’t serve us anymore. I share with you how I handled my fear brain regarding my dream of living in NYC and made this particular dream come true! It’s important to think carefully about two of the words we use here: Dreams and desires. The word “dreams” has some baggage that I address, and I explain why I prefer to use “desires.” I also teach a strategy around asking a different question as a way to get past a roadblock and make the shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, which is key to actualizing your desires, and I discuss the importance of visualization – why it works and how to do it properly. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 087: How to Be an Empowered Woman

This episode kicks off a six-part series in which I take you through six different pathways to happiness, to human flourishing, and with each one I’ll provide you with tools that you can use. This is all based on the current research through a framework called PERMA-V. In today’s episode I’ll teach you all about the P: Positivity, and every other week, when I do a solo episode, I’ll be discussing another one of the 6 pathways. After you listen to each episode, I hope you’ll practice the tools I’m providing so you can apply this to your own life. I start with a bit of background to help put all of this in context. I discuss a bit of the history of psychology in the twentieth century and the birth of the field of positive psychology, which stemmed from the recognition that we needed to focus on and learn more about wellness, and not just illness. A key idea in positive psychology is that the absence of illness is not wellness. Just because you don’t have diabetes or cancer doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and just because you haven’t been diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder doesn’t mean you’re thriving and flourishing. Positive psychology started developing the understanding that, more than the surface happiness, which, while it’s pleasurable, is more fleeting, we should be learning to cultivate a deeper, more fulfilling happiness. I address the concept of the hedonic treadmill as part of the reason why the search for more money and a better job doesn’t lead to true, deep, lasting happiness, and what Aristotle called “eudaimonia,” or wellbeing and flourishing. The field of positive psychology has been studying what it takes to really cultivate our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, and a recent theory has laid out 6 pathways to flourishing: PERMA-V.  Positivity Engagement Relationships Meaning and Purpose Accomplishment and Achievement Vitality  In today’s episode I discuss Positivity, which does not mean being happy all the time and ignoring one’s grief and challenging emotions, and sweeping difficult experiences under the rug. Positivity is about having more positive emotions than negative emotions, more gratitude than resentment, more joy than grief and rage. We all have negativity bias, we all go more easily towards the negative than the positive, and I offer an activity for you to do that demonstrates this. The pathway of positivity really comes down to understanding how your brain works, and to your mindset, shifting from reacting harshly to stressful triggers to responding to them, so that you can show up in the world as your best self. Negativity bias served a very important role in our own survival as a species, keeping us on the lookout for threats in our environment. This no longer serves us, though, and in fact it adversely impacts our wellbeing, but it did serve a purpose evolutionarily, and this begs the question: Why do we have positive emotions? Top researcher Barbara Frederickson has shown that positive emotions also played a key role in our survival in that they contributed to building relationships, which helped us fight threats. Positive emotions also facilitate increased creativity and problem solving, helping our brains broaden and build. We need more positive emotions in our day than negative ones, and a major way to do this is through gratitude, gratitude and appreciation for what it, and also holding a vision for a positive future. I discuss the upward spiral generated by regular practices of gratitude, why it’s so important, and how to incorporate gratitude into your daily life. I talk about the pessimistic thinking style, which is characterized by the belief that challenges tend to be permanent, pervasive, and personal, versus the optimistic thinking style, in which we view challenges as temporary, isolated, and not necessarily personal. Shifting from a pessimistic thinking style to an optimistic thinking style will bring about profound improvements to your wellbeing, and research shows that having a pessimistic thinking style shortens one’s life span by an average of 9 years! I end with a discussion of the cycle of thoughts leading to feelings leading to behaviors and back to a new thought, and how we can work with this cycle to change our thoughts and therefore change the feelings and behaviors that follow. This comes in part form the work of Byron Katie who teaches us to question our own thoughts. This episode kicks off a six-part series in which I take you through six different pathways to happiness, to human flourishing, and with each one I’ll provide you with tools that you can use. This is all based on the current research through a framework called PERMA-V. In today’s episode I’ll teach you all about the P: Positivity, and every other week, when I do a solo episode, I’ll be discussing another one of the 6 pathways. After you listen to each episode, I hope you’ll practice the tools I’m providing so you can apply this to your own life. I start with a bit of background to help put all of this in context. I discuss a bit of the history of psychology in the twentieth century and the birth of the field of positive psychology, which stemmed from the recognition that we needed to focus on and learn more about wellness, and not just illness. A key idea in positive psychology is that the absence of illness is not wellness. Just because you don’t have diabetes or cancer doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and just because you haven’t been diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder doesn’t mean you’re thriving and flourishing. Positive psychology started developing the understanding that, more than the surface happiness, which, while it’s pleasurable, is more fleeting, we should be learning to cultivate a deeper, more fulfilling happiness. I address the concept of the hedonic treadmill as part of the reason why the search for more money and a better job doesn’t lead to true, deep, lasting happiness, and what Aristotle called “eudaimonia,” or wellbeing and flourishing. The primary definition of “goddess” is typically given as a “female deity.” But the term is also defined as being a woman of extraordinary beauty and charm, or a greatly admired or adored woman. With that meaning in mind, shouldn’t we see ourselves and other women as goddesses? To say that we are divine, sacred, holy, does not have to mean that we are better than other women; we could and should see all women as sacred. And we can look to some of the great goddesses of antiquity to see the facets of the divine in ourselves. From Aphrodite to Artemis to Kali and Lakshmi and more, I discuss some of the characteristics of a number of goddesses, their particular talents and gifts that they offered the world as a part of their own purpose, and how we as women have a sacred purpose of our own. By learning to value our own talents and strengths, we can start to see the divine in ourselves and treat ourselves like the goddesses we truly are. Everyone, regardless of gender, has traits that are considered masculine and traits that are considered feminine, and both kinds are important. However, we live in a male-dominated society that undervalues the feminine traits and overvalues the masculine traits. Plus, women are bombarded with images and messages in the media that hold up a certain idea of beauty that is unattainable for just about every woman, which only serves to demoralize women and make us feel even less attractive, less worthy. But we get to flip that. We get to decide that we are goddesses worthy of adoration and admiration. We have a choice. We can choose what messages to internalize. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 099: How to Love Yourself AND Have a Hot Relationship

My guest today is Pax Tandon, author, producer, wellness advocate, teacher, and former news anchor. Her mission is to effect mass positive change on the planet, and she believes that the practice of Mindfulness is vital to this mission. Her book, Mindfulness Matters, is out now. She also recently finished work on the Mindfulness Matters short film, which she co-produced, co-wrote, voiced and starred in. Tandon holds a Master’s Degree in Positive Psychology, and certifications in mindfulness, positive psychology coaching, yoga, and past life regression therapy.  Pax believes that mindfulness is the foundation of thriving, and that without purpose, or rather, without aligning with our true purpose, we can never fully achieve well-being. Mindfulness can help us cultivate the inner attunement we need to listen to our inner voice and stay on our "due North" path toward fulfillment. She defines mindfulness as a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, the ability to sit with the present moment, just as it is, without actively trying to change it or resist it. Pax addresses some of the many benefits of developing mindfulness, including an improved ability to manage one’s emotions in a healthy way. We can become less reactive and less judgmental and learn to interact with our world in a much more objective, calm way. Do we want to live in upset, frustration, and anger much of the time, or do we want to release ourselves from that, liberate ourselves from that, and live differently? Mindfulness practices also cultivate empathy, because as we are better able to understand our own thoughts and emotions, so we become better able to relate to and understand others. And as we are better able to regulate our own emotions we become better decision makers, as we can consider options more objectively and be less influenced by overpowering emotions in the heat of the moment. Being in a more positive state of mind is good for so many reasons, including improving our physical health, our social connections, and our ability to do creative problem solving. In our society today with so many distractions and demands on our attention, it’s so important for us to be able to exercise greater control over where we'd like to place our attention. Discipline and self-regulation are fundamentally liberating. They liberate you from attachments to things that aren’t in your highest and greatest good. Pax also talks about the importance of a gratitude practice as part of one’s overall mindfulness practice, specifically the writing of gratitude letters; mindfulness in eating; and, the connections between mindfulness and purpose. Slowing down, pausing, and taking a moment to appreciate what we have is so important to our wellbeing, but in the hectic day-to-day rush of our lives we rarely take time for appreciation. In the United States we have the holiday of Thanksgiving, which is a day set aside for us to do exactly this, but how do we use the power of gratitude to improve our lives every single day? The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 076: Living a Life Without Regret

No matter what we’ve been through, no matter what kinds of traumas we’ve experienced, no matter what we hear in the news, we can always regain hope. When crappy things happen – and they most certainly will – we have a number of choices in what we do. Positive psychology, the science of happiness and human flourishing, offers us a number of practical, effective strategies that we can employ to keep going, to grow, and to thrive, and to regain our hope. I begin with a discussion of the relationship between goals and hope, and how goals start in the mind while hope starts in the heart, with emotions. Both are vital, but hope should precede goals. Hope is the igniter for all of your goals. According to Hope Theory (by C. R. Snyder), hope gives us motivation and strategies towards our goals. It’s normal, and healthy, to feel down, to feel hopeless, to drown yourself in Ben and Jerry’s, for a while. But you can’t stay there. You need to move through it. And all you need is the tiniest bit of hope, the realization that things can get better, that the world can be a little brighter. I offer concrete examples from women with whom I’ve worked, women who felt hopeless and in whom I helped cultivate a renewed feeling of hope. I share a story about Dr. Chris Feudtner, who works with terminally ill children in palliative care at CHOP in Philadelphia, and how he and his staff help the families of these children find something to be hopeful about. I share the heartbreaking and awe-inspiring story of Karla Jacinto, a victim of human trafficking who survived years of horror and still rebuilt her hope in the world. She now uses her experiences as fuel to fight for others. Hope gives us motivation, agency, and strategies. Drawing from this example, I consider what strategies I can come up with to rebuild my own hope in a troubled world. I introduce the concepts of pessimistic thinking styles and optimistic thinking styles, how to shift from the former to the latter, and why this is so important. Adopting an optimistic thinking style is crucial to overcoming hopelessness and to developing and implementing strategies to move our lives forward, and I end with a few Purpose Power Tips to help you nurture an optimistic thinking style.
