Summary In today’s episode, I chat with brand alchemist, radio show host, healing farmer, and CEO of Kai Society, Kai Cole. Kai sheds light on her journey thus far and her mission to promote both brand awareness and spiritual and physical healing through tribe architecture. Kai shares her happiness and joy throughout our conversation. Her smile can be heard in her every word, even when she opens up about:  embracing her emotions, navigating uncomfortable moments, her ideas of success, reaching out for support when she feels fear, and sky-diving, base jumping, and taking other crazy chances.    Highlights On her purpose: Tribe architecture stems from the thought of how you can sustainably take care of your following - of the people that are among you and are guiding you through this amazing journey towards whatever it is that your purpose is - but also about the journey of taking care of yourself. I have the ability to promote not only marketing but also conscious living and sustainable living and sustainable healing. __________ On discomfort/fear: For me, being unprepared is something that scares me a lot. I spend a lot of frantic and nervous energy trying to be ready for the unknown which is impossible. And I acknowledge that. That’s when…having more prepared minds and prepared hands around you than you may need…is an assurance that is priceless. I love to use the phrase from Kevin Hart, to use the word pineapples when you feel uncomfortable. It sounds funny but it’s a good verbal reminder to yourself and a way of admitting honestly that I am afraid at this moment. Having people around you means that you can actually reach out for help at that moment. __________ On failure: We don’t make decisions necessarily for them to be final all the time. __________ On intentions: I like to call it self-source-ery. You can source yourself by naming yourself. If we keep sourcing ourselves for the reasons that we know are just, even when no one is around, even when no one shares the vision that we know is the truth, then we’ll be able to have ourselves undoubtedly at our own side on our own team. __________ On resources: There’s more than enough in this world for everyone. So I think it makes sense to share. A note, for instance, on my alarm in the morning is: I love you. You’re beautiful. A note that I carry with me throughout the day is from my boyfriend. Just things that make me feel good or feel the way that I want to feel are great ways to put myself in a mood that is conducive to carrying out my day. I would love to have these reminders around rather than looking at a pile of bills. __________ On knowing your limits: I don’t plan on being the grounded one. I like to have someone nearby o r have input or constant feedback to allow the perspective of being grounded because I know that I’m not.  And that’s ok. __________ On taking ownership: Taking ownership in how I show up, how I am present, and how I contribute to a particular project is all that I can do, all that I can control. And then after everything takes place, I can assess – go back and see what worked and what didn’t, and nix what didn’t work and make sure that the next time that it takes place, I can be as inclusive as is beneficial for the project. __________ On difficult conversations: So embracing what it is that you feel and communicating it as articulately as you can even if you need some time and space to formulate your ideas, maybe even take some notes, is definitely something that I advise. I want to make sure that when I’m communicating on a difficult matter, that simply everything that’s being said is very clear and that it is towards the objective of what is for the greater good of the project or for the greater good of the partnership even if that means parting ways. And I’m definitely not afraid to do that. __________ On growth: I’m very thankful to have the vision to look back and see that everything that I have done has been practice for this moment. If we can acknowledge where we are right here and now and also honor the people that we do become, we get to grant ourselves the permission to honor ourselves and our journey. __________ On mantras: I’m never grounded but ever-present. One of my favorite quotes is, and I quote, “to let it be what it is for you.” Everything has different meaning based on our own experiences. __________ On perceptions: Look inside and realize that we are beautiful and you’ll always be surrounded by beauty. We are all alone together…We like to feel special but we also like to belong.   __________ On work ethic: My personal motto is that I don’t like to do anything by myself if I don’t have to..I always love to have a cohost, love to partner with other people to do events, or organizations, or groups of people. It’s the more the merrier. ___________ On taking crazy chances: All of these different arenas that I happen to touch were due to me following my heart. As cliché as that is, it’s very true…America frowns on people being skilled in more than one area because we can’t contain those people. What do we call them? But it also forced me to look at my life and to determine whether or not I was really living in purpose and service.  And that’s where the whole idea of Chicks with MDs came from…I really feel like I’m serving in the way that I always thought I should be when I started this path to medicine. __________ On why her service matters: Chicks with MDs is a professional think tank to improve, educate, and elevate the lives of patients and physicians. And that means for me is that every intention and every action I take with this organization is to help not just the survival of all of us but to make our lives more enjoyable, more livable. Educate people to make sure they get the best health plan so that not just their life is better but that their kids are better. That they can participate in their kids’ sports or they can spend time with their husband so that we’re not just all in a logjam to get to the next painful moment. __________ On fear: I realize that there’s no gain without risk. There will never be a time in anything that I do where I will not fear. Everything that I have accomplished or gained is because I didn’t avoid fear or push it to the side. I just walked with it. There will never come a time in your life when you won’t have fear or reluctance or doubt your own abilities, but just walk with it anyway. I’m in the process of completing my first work of fiction and it’s the scariest thing. These are stories that have been with me forever. I know them. I love them. But there’s a fear in revealing them to the public. Will they like it? Won’t they like it? It doesn’t really matter because it’s still my work. The book will available to the public later this year. __________ On failure: I did 9 years of surgical training and then I was in practice half of that time. I got sick and had to completely recreate my life. What I could’ve done was just stopped. For me, that would’ve been failure - stopping there and not figuring out how to continue to serve. Even when I was in my hospital bed with that initial diagnosis, the first thought [was] how can I continue to be of service? Failure is going to be different for every person. For me, that failure is refusing to move past a roadblock, obstruction, pain, fear. __________ On discomfort: You have to face the weakness in yourself, walking with that fear. It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s that you have to figure [it] out. It’s something new that you have to learn about yourself or learn about the voids that you have in yourself. I think most of the time, the limitations are self-imposed. Once you get past that, then you can move to the next step. __________ On resources: Don’t be afraid to ask and get support. Get a business coach. Take a course. Recognize that there are things that you don’t know but that’s not out of your control. Utilize the tools that are at your disposal. There’s a woman in New York. Her name is Marie Forleo. She has basically a business school for new entrepreneurs and it’s all online…It really helped me to see things from an executive perspective. __________ On negativity: When you’re living your life through somebody else’s eyes, perspective, goals, dreams, it diminishes your energy and your spirit a little bit every day. __________ On support: Find people who are supportive of your ideas. They can really provide truthful, critical feedback that you need to get to the next level. And the other thing I would recommend is finding mentors that you can talk to who, once again, are objective and to not to be too afraid to reach out to people that you think are beyond you or too high up. __________ On growth: Listening to the customers that you have will bring you new ideas. There was a virtual society but they didn’t have a virtual link where you could conference. When I asked [for it], they created a link. __________ On intentions: How can I stay true to who I am as a person - my personality, my intentions, my energy - and also continue to serve? So I use that platform (Chicks with MDs) not only to serve patients and also physicians, but I also use it to serve myself. You have to be in control of the energy around you and you have to be in control of your own intentions because that determines how people respond to you. My intention is to serve, to share, to educate. When I relay this information, it’s not coming across as a commercial.  I’m not coming as a salesman, I’m giving you information and allowing you digest it. And then we’re going to discuss it. That goes a long way. __________ On fees: When you come to that table, you have to be well-informed because you are your advocate. Don’t back down simply because somebody says that’s not an option. If it’s not an option, then maybe that deal isn’t for you. Be your own advocate. Be your best representative and don’t waver from that. That means that I’ve done my research, I know my worth. There is no issue with service and generating revenue. Wealth building and providing service do not have to be mutually exclusive. __________ On perceptions: When you’re transparent and you reveal your truth, you gain so much power and control over your own life. The analogy I use is when I give my diagnosis to somebody, that they take out a bottle of liquor and pour it out on my grave.
