Welcome to Lady Startup the show that’s all about helping you understand what it takes to build a business from scratch.

Rachel Corbett's guest today is one half of the fashion label, Spell & The Gypsy, Lizzy Abegg.

Lizzy’s sister Isabella (Spelly) was living in Byron selling her jewellery at the local markets and working part-time to cover the rest of her living costs.

Down south in Sydney, Lizzy was working in a job she wasn't passionate about so after going through a tough break up she realised she needed a change.  In a moment of inspiration, while on the Bondi to Bronte walk, Lizzy called her sister to ask if she wanted a business partner.

Next thing she knew she was packing up her life and moving to Byron where Spelly gave her half the business and they started to build the Spell & The Gypsy brand together.

Spelly focused on design while Lizzy turned her attention to building the brand as well as their social media presence (which is now pretty significant).

So how did they go from a market stall that wasn’t even covering the cost of a couple of rolls of toilet paper to an international brand with celebrity fans like Sienna Miller and Vanessa Hudgens? Lets find out

Welcome to the summer series of Lady Startup! The show where female entrepreneurs share the ups and downs of building an empire.

Over the next four weeks, you'll be hearing a series if specially selected interviews that Mia Freedman did with amazing female entrepreneurs on her podcast, No Filter.

To hear more of her awesome chats head to... https://www.mamamia.com.au/podcasts/no-filter/

This week's guest is lipstick queen, Poppy King.

Poppy King was HUGE in the 90's thanks to her range of Poppy lipsticks.  If you’re a woman over 30 chances are you owned at least one of them, but probably more.  Her first range was named after empowering female characteristics and within 3 short years, Poppy Industries had become the biggest cosmetics company in Australia.

At its height, it was turning over $8mill a year, which was huge in the '90s but in the early 2000s the company dissolved and Poppy moved to NY to work for Estee Lauder.

Now she’s back with a new range called Lipstick Queen, available in Mecca, and she talks to Mia about what it was like building a business at a time when female entrepreneurship wasn't a thing.

Disappointed with how unappealing Australian stationary was, she decided to create her own range with a focus on clean Swedish design.  Customers loved it and she created an entirely new product category that was copied all over the world.

Rachel and Kristina also discuss her book “Your Dream Life Starts Here”. She is passionate about the power of dreaming and explains how she loves helping people turn their pie in the sky dreams into reality.

Podcast cover
Read more

From Mamamia this is Lady Startup, the show where we pick the brains of successful female entrepreneurs to find out how they built their empires.

Rachel Corbett’s guest today is founder of one of Australia’s most well-known jewellery brands, Samantha Wills.

Samantha built her business from a stall at Sydney’s Bondi markets into an international brand with a revenue of over $10 million.  Last year, when she announced she was closing the doors her customers and loyal online fanbase were very surprised.

So how did Samantha take her jewellery business from a trestle table in Australia to New York and beyond?  And what made her decide to shut down a business she’d been building for almost 15 years?

Listen to find out...
