For some it is financially driven. But for others it’s because they love what they do, enjoy the people they work with and have a sense of mission and purpose in their work. Scott MacKillop shares why he’s choosing to continue to work – and how he also enjoys his family life and a variety of interests outside of work. Scott MacKillop joins us from Colorado. __________________________ Bio Scott MacKillop is the CEO of First Ascent Asset Management in Denver, Colorado. After 40 years in the financial services industry, he’s still driven by seeing if he can do things better and make a difference in the industry. A graduate of Stanford University and George Washington University’s Law School, he began his career working as an intern at the Securities and Exchange Commission while in law school and then practiced law in Washington, DC for a little over 15 years, specializing in securities law, ERISA and venture capital transactions. Scott has published over 100 published articles and papers and has delivered over 100 industry conference speaking engagements. It’s an aspirational goal, but you have to accept the fact that there’s only 24 hours in a day. And if you’re like me, there’s way too many things that you’d like to do and so you’re never going to be able to fit it all in. So you have to try to screen out as many things as possible to really just focus on your priorities and not let yourself get distracted. Embrace the fact that you’re not going to get everything right. You’re going to have days when you go, Oh, I spent too much time doing work and not enough time doing things with my family. And there’ll be other times when you see it the other way. So just don’t stress about that. Do your best to stay focused. And you have to think about it, because it’s not going to happen by itself. There’s nobody that’s going to tell you when it’s time to go do your fun things and stop working. So you have to be very intentional about it. I think the key is just recognizing that it’s hard to get that exactly right. But I have found, interestingly, that time seems a little bit expandable to me. So if I have relatively few things to do, I’m going to fill up the day. If I have more things to do, somehow or another, I can still get those in.”   On Guitar Lessons “I also play guitar. I play in a band. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area back in the sixties. And so there were were a lot of  pretty cool musical influences back then. And I actually ended up taking guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia before he became, you know, Jerry Garcia…What happened there was there was actually a guitar teacher named Troy Heimer, who nobody has ever heard of now. But all of my friends said, He’s the best guitar player! You’ve gotta go take lessons from him. So I went down to this local guitar store and tried to get lessons from Troy, and they said, Nope, there’s no way you can do it. And I said, I’ll come anytime, weekends or late. He said, Nope, sorry, he’s totally booked up. But we’ve got this other guy. And, they pointed to him. He was sitting, I still remember, he was in a metal folding chair. He had a Guild 12 string guitar, and he had this wild black wiry hair and probably about five days growth. And back in those days, he was kind of scary looking. But I listened to him play and it was unbelievable. So, I said, Okay,  I’ll sign up take some lessons from him. So that’s how it all happened.”   On the Gift of Time “I’m much more aware of the finite nature of the time that I have. There’s no question about it. I feel lucky. I’m 72 now. Both my parents died in their mid sixties, and so I feel like I’ve got this gift of these extra years. I don’t know how many more of ’em I’m going to  have. I just look at each one of them as a blessing and recognize I could live, I guess, another 30 years, but I could also have a much shorter time period. So, there’s that sort of mysterious quality to time where, you don’t really know how much of it you have. You can’t really plan on a specific amount of time. But I am at the point now where the end of my life is not some theoretical thing. I know that I will someday not be here. And so it makes everything seem sweeter and more important. Every hour you have is a gift. And so you try to do the best you can with it and make a difference. I think it’s important. I don’t think everybody looks at the world this way, but I have been motivated a lot by trying to just make the world a better place in some little way. That might be just a smile to somebody in your family, or it might be something bigger that you try to do. But I think it makes it makes me very conscious of how I spend my time.”   On Common Mistakes in Planning for Retirement “The thing that I’ve seen is people not really thinking that much about what it’s going to be like and how they’re going to spend their time – and how they’re going to feel about things. My recommendation is to think about the things that bring you joy in your life and be very intentional about that. Try to identify what those things are and say, Well, if I quit work, will I lose some of those things? Or will I get more of what I like when I quit and go do other things? I think it’s just really important to have in mind what are the things that bring you joy in life and try to gravitate in those directions. I think the reason why I’m still working at this point is just that I love what I do. I get a lot out of it and there would be no real substitute for it at this point in my life. So I continue to do that along with the other things that bring me joy as well. Once you leave the work world, you realize how much of your life structure was built round work. And when that structure isn’t there anymore, there’s no little fairies going to show up and say, Now it’s time to go do this. You need to plan to do that. There’s a lot of, I’ll call it work, but I’m not sure that it really feels like work, but there’s work to do to make sure you think about what you’re going to do next. The world can take you away. But I think it makes it makes me very conscious of how I spend my time.” On Common Mistakes in Planning for Retirement “The thing that I’ve seen is people not really thinking that much about what it’s going to be like and how they’re going to spend their time – and how they’re going to feel about things. My recommendation is to think about the things that bring you joy in your life and be very intentional about that. Try to identify what those things are and say, Well, if I quit work, will I lose some of those things? Or will I get more of what I like when I quit and go do other things? I think it’s just really important to have in mind what are the things that bring you joy in life and try to gravitate in those directions. I think the reason why I’m still working at this point is just that I love what I do. I get a lot out of it and there would be no real substitute for it at this point in my life. So I continue to do that along with the other things that bring me joy as well. Once you leave the work world, you realize how much of your life structure was built round work. And when that structure isn’t there anymore, there’s no little fairies going to show up and say, Now it’s time to go do this. You need to plan to do that. There’s a lot of, I’ll call it work, but I’m not sure that it really feels like work, but there’s work to do to make sure you think about what you’re going to do next. The world can take you away. One is a concern for the relationships we have with others. So when people ask us to do something, they’re usually our friends, our family, people who are colleagues and acquaintances, and we want to have a good relationship with those people. We want to maintain that good relationship. The second reason ties into our reputation. We want to be seen positively in the eyes of people. We want to be seen as capable, as confident, as able to handle the things that are thrown our way. And the third thing is we have never really learned how to say no effectively throughout our lives. We’ve kind of tried to accommodate people’s requests and be cooperative and helpful, and [we’re] givers more than takers. And society in many ways, kind of shapes that sort of behavior and rewards that sort of behavior. And so we have never really learned to look inwards and think about how do I say no to the things that are not aligned with what I want to do or what I want to achieve.” On Choosing the Right Words “So, in my research, I actually focus on what are the words that we can use to communicate our refusal, that implicate the identity? And the way you implicate your identity is you ground your refusal in your identity is by choosing your words carefully. When you say, I can’t, you come across as disempowered, not in control, and suggest to the asker that, well, under some other situation, I would be able to say yes, but right now I can’t. And that very often invites pushback, negotiation discussion. Whereas when you say, I don’t, you implicate yourself, you say: This is my way of operating. This is who I am. This is how I do things. So, I don’t is a much more empowered way to communicate your refusal.” On Setting Personal Policies “So, a Personal Policy is essentially a simple rule that we set up for ourselves that give voice to our values and priorities that shape our actions and decisions. So, these are just rules that we set up. They are operating principles that allow us to live life the way we want to live life. And I very often, when I’m teaching this, use the example of travel. Now we all travel and it’s summer, so it makes sense to be talking about travel because it’s very close to our hearts. When we travel, we have preferences and we like certain things. So some people are aisle seats and some people are window seats. Some people just can’t stand a overnight red-eye flight, whereas other people are okay with it. Some people will say, I will not travel to Europe unless it is at least a week. whereas other people don’t have that preference in place. So more importantly, we have such good preferences and we know our preferences about travel, and so we are able to design our travel around those preferences. And as soon as I say that to people, then you can realize that if you can do it with travel, you can do it with any domain.  You can do it with how you deal with friends, how you deal with family, how you deal with going to the gym, how you deal with entertainment, how you spend your time on social media –  absolutely everything. What are your preferences, priorities, beliefs and values in that domain? And how would you like them to be seen? It’s really physiology. Our brains are built differently. As a result, we operate differently, and it impacts the way we make money decisions and how we communicate about things. So it could impact priorities and goals, risk tolerance and then our abilities to communicate about it. Women have a wider corpus callosum, so we can go back and forth between the left and the right brain. We have a slightly larger strategic part of our brain, which allows us often times to think more long-term, where men are more short-term, looking for short-term results, thinking about trading more, whereas women may want a long-term strategy with a multiple manager approach and not so hands-on every day. So I think the gender differences are huge. I try to tell people is these [differences] are universal – they’re not unique to you. You start out with first two wheels. They’re,  body and mind, and they’re there and they’re good, and they’re connected with a strong support system. And so the infrastructure is good, but what’s it going to do? You’ve got two wonderful wheels and they’re there and they can go round and round and round. But until you get that third wheel in front of the two back there, which is  the body and the mind, you get the spirit in front and the will and the purpose in the front wheel. So now you’ve got a holistic structure. One thing we can do is write a letter to our future self and then write a letter back from our future self. And I think I really want to stress the back part because it kind of forces us to step into the shoes of our future self and see the world through their eyes. Engage in some visualization exercises where we try to think about deeply what’s my life going to be like? How will I spend my time? Who will I spend it with? Am I workin  not all the time? Am I traveling? What am I doing with myself? I think most people in the retirement space, in the financial planning space, they think of the future selves. It’s not like this is a foreign concept, but it’s always done at an implicit level. You talk about retirement, you talk about decumulation strategies, you talk about annuities, whatever. It’s all sort of done in a very abstract and implicit way. But to like really bring the self back into the conversation, [ask] who am I? What am I going to be doing? That’s where I think we can start to see some change in the way we really think about that period of time.”   On the FIRE Movement “And so, the question really does become one of harmony. How can I both live for today and live in a way that puts myself in a good position in the future? And there’s no easy answer here, but the way that I like to think about this is, there may be times when it makes sense to spend the money. There may be times when it makes sense to celebrate right now, especially so that we can enjoy the experience now and later, right? Retrospectively, now the problem arises when I do that all the time. If I convince myself, every time there’s an opportunity to upgrade whether it’s with my car or my TV or the concert tickets or whatever, if every time I do that, I take the opportunity, surely now I’m living myopically, right? And so, I like to think about what other researchers have called The Big Why to say Well, what is the thing that drives me? What’s really at the core of my values? What’s most important to me? Is food the most important thing to me? Is it family? I’m not here to judge what those things are. But if I sort of bring my decisions back to The Big Why, it can help orient me to say, Well, in this particular experience, I’m going to go for it or In this one I’m going to pull back a little bit. They had this realization that, days move fast, years move slow. And they did something really interesting. They got people to think about all different sort of future events, whether it’s retirement or my kids going to college, things like this. And they framed those events as occurring in either days or years. So in 30 years you’ll retire, or in 10,950 days, something like this. Well, what happens is when you frame it in terms of the days, people feel as if the event is coming sooner. There’s something ironic about this because the number is bigger, right? Almost 11,000 versus 30 – but 30 years feels like a vast expanse of time, almost 11,000 days. That feels like a lot too. But at the same time, it’s like one day goes to the next and the next and the next and the next. I can understand why so many people would say that event feels like it’s happening sooner. There’s a whole confluence of events and needs, whether it’s education, availability, accessibility costs or a lack of information. I would say we’re entering a new era of opportunity. I always think of this as the carrot and the stick measure components. You’ve got both factors. So at the sort of carrot level, the federal government via Secure 1.0 and Secure 2.o,  two major pieces of legislation that have byproducts and support and that have passed, are providing unprecedented tax incentives for small businesses to get set up. If you’ve never set up a plan to start a plan, if you’ve got under 50 employees,  there’s a slew of tax credits. And I encourage any small business owner or individual to talk to their tax advisor and accountant to see what those are. You can easily Google some of those resources. There are a lot of shortcuts, a lot of incentives that have never existed before. Then you’ve got the stick component. 16 states have already passed legislation requiring a small business to have a qualified savings plan. There are many options. There are some state options, many choices and great providers, but I believe there’s never been a better time – whether you go with the traditional firm or some of the newer firms. Modern 401K providers  make it really easy and take away a lot of the administrative burden, a lot of the decision making around investments as well as making the cost extremely favorable for businesses and their employees. You do have to go into it realizing that you really are committing to that ongoing networking, marketing and business development. But I’ll tell you it’s really about relationships. By this point in our lives, most of us are pretty good at it and we get to choose who we have those relationships with. So some of those nightmare people that we’ve had to work with all these years, we can let some of those people go – and hopefully there’s just a few of them. For those of us thinking about retirement, almost all of us have the experiences and expertise to be able to do it. You have to have something to offer. Almost all of us do at this point. And it does take a lot of personal courage and a lot of intellectual courage as well.” On Neuroscience &amp; Quitting “In my conversations with many neuroscientists I spoke with, and scientists and evolutionary biologists, they all make one salient point about our brains. Our brains like to be active. Our brains like to stay in motion. The worst thing you can do for a brain, any brain, ours or anybody else’s, is to have it just be sitting there not doing anything. Our brains like to be in motion. So I call quitting aerobics for your brain. It’s a way of keeping your brain active when you change course. When you look at the path you’re on and say, I don’t know. I think maybe I can do better. When you change course like that, you are forcing your brain to be engaged and your whole brain is engaged with even the smallest decision. We know that now it’s a whole brain activity, even the smallest thing that you do. And that keeps our brains engaged and that in turn keeps our brains active and healthy because an active brain is a happy brain. We define peak performance as the following: Peak performance is nothing more or nothing less than getting our biology to work for us rather than against us. And this is, by the way, not a new idea, right? You go back a hundred years to William James, in the very first psychology textbook said the great thing in any education is to make our nervous system our ally and not our enemy. And by nervous system he meant brain and body basically. So it’s not a new idea, but that’s really what we mean by peak performance. Peak performance aging by extension is getting our biology to work for us rather than against us when applied to the challenges and opportunities the second half of our lives.  Very simple. What I mean by that bigger picture, the old idea about aging, I like to call it the long slow rot theory, right? And I’m sure you guys have talked about a ton on this on this podcast is the idea that all of of our mental skills and all of our physical skills decline over time. And there’s nothing we can do to stop this slide. And this was the story, unless you happen to be in your twenties, and then it might have changed a little bit, but this is the story we all grew up with. This is the story we were all told, right? I grew up with it. You grew up with it. And most of us believe parts of it, or all of it, but it’s there in our thinking, in our culture and dangerous idea. But it’s also not true. That’s the cool part.”     On the Power of Mindset “One of the deepest findings if you get into research on aging right now, is that the mind-body connection is so unbelievably tight. All the major levers, all the biggest things we could reach for are actually psychological tools. They’ve got neurobiology underneath them, which is why they work. But those are the huge interventions. And nowhere is this clear than in the work on mindset. Now, this is very old research. It dates back to Ellen Langer at Harvard in the seventies and goes all the way through today to Becca Levy her student, now at Yale. She’s brilliant and she has carried a lot of that forward. So, what do we know? A positive mindset towards aging meaning my best days are ahead of me. I think the second half of my life is going to be filled with thrilling, wonderful, exciting possibility. That’s all we’re talking about, right? It translates to an extra eight years of healthy longevity. This means if you’re morbidly obese and have a [lousy] mindset towards aging and you want to change, if you can only change one thing, change your mindset. It’s gonna have a bigger impact. It has more or as much of an impact as quitting smoking if you’re a chronic, an over a pack a day smoker. These are big, big impacts. And here’s the flip side. We also know you grew up suffering ageism – the most acceptable stereotype in the world.  Becca Levy’s work at Yale tells us by the time you’re 60 years old, if you were exposed to ageism or you have a bad mindset towards aging, you have a 30% greater memory decline after 60. That’s shocking, right? That’s insane. And you don’t want to mess with those odds. Now there is a deeper question about how do you shift a mindset? Mindset and robust social connections are probably the first two things you want to reach for if you’re interested in peak performance aging.” On Finding Flow “So in flow science, there’s something called your Primary Flow Activity. This is really whatever you’ve done most of your life that drops you into flow. For me it’s skiing. For my wife, it’s hiking the dogs in the background. For my best friend it’s playing guitar. For other people, it’s learning how to samba or salsa or take your pick: write code for computers, read books, ride horses, whatever that thing is for you. Research shows that you want to double down on it. What does that really mean? If you can engage in your primary flow activity about four hours a week, two 2-hour sessions or one four hour block – it makes a huge difference. Let me give you a four reasons. We talked about the the anti-stress stuff. So you’re resetting your nervous system every week that has huge anti-aging benefits, right? Huge, huge quality of life and mood benefits. So those further cascade into lower stress better, et cetera. So the more flow you get, the more flow you get. And here’s the cool thing that heightened creativity and heightened productivity that tends to outlast the flow state. Work out of Harvard says the heightened creativity can outlast the flow state by a day, maybe two. And there’s ways to work with it to really ensure that this happens in a better way. But my point is, I go skiing on a Saturday. It means that I show up and work on Monday and I’m more productive and I’m more creative – it’s like a bonus, right? So there’s a lot of reasons to double down your primary flow activity, but the, the most importantly is it brings back that fire in the belly. It brings back that joy, that passion, that it revitalizes, it wakes us up again. It makes us feel young in a lot of real ways. And it’s so, so, so important if you can figure out what drives you into flow. By the way, challenge is a flow trigger. Creativity is a flow trigger. Proper social activity is a flow trigger, group flow. A lot of that novelty is a flow trigger. But the simplest way to start is just double down your primary flow activity. And the problem with this it is exactly what we stop doing as we age, right? We set down childish things. The skateboard gets put away, the surfboard gets put away and I got to work all the time and provide for my family. That is the way that they will enroll in Medicare when it’s time. And we have run into people trying to enroll in Medicare who did not have an account. And it’s not always easy to set up. And people who have an account haven’t kept it up to date, they haven’t informed Social Security of their address change. And after a divorce, women with a name change, that’s quite involved. And with the Social Security offices just coming back out from Covid, many of them are still not open completely. If you have to submit documents, you don’t want to send originals in the mail. And so that’s what we say, keep it up to date. Then when you’re actually approaching 65, you can’t do anything until your initial enrollment period, which is three months before your birthday, unless it’s on the first of the month and it’s four months. But people like to start about six months in advance. Given they’re getting all of the advertising even earlier than that, we tell them that’s when you should start thinking about it. And one of our best pieces of advice is that they can  toss out that stuff they get prior to age 65 because as they get closer and know what they need, then they can look for the specific information that will work for them.” On The Two Medicare Paths “The two Medicare paths is how Medicare is structured for most people over 65. It is probably the most important decision people will make going forward, yet people give it the short shrift. I read that on average people spend 14 hours shopping for a new car. What do they do when it comes to Medicare? They go with what their spouse has, or what works for a friend, or what’s in the commercials. With a car there are lemon laws, and in the worst case scenario, you’d lose your money and start over. With Medicare, in most states, you won’t be able to start over. So this decision is very important.”   On Researching Medicare Advantage “…Don’t call the number on the screen. Again, when you read the fine print, it will say that this will connect you to an agent who may or may not be in your area, who may or may not be selling your plan, or may or may not be selling Medicare Advantage. I actually saw that on one of the commercials. So I tell people, if something interests you in the commercial, go to the Medicare Plan Finder, find that plan in your area, then actually go and look at the evidence of coverage. This is painful for many people trying to find the Evidence of Coverage, which is in the rules. It’s amazing what they say in the commercial and what the actual rules are. Two different stories. Then when you think you like the plan, contact a local agent or you can enroll directly with the plan. There’s so many things you can do.”   On Hobbies “I think having hobbies is absolutely crucial, and I want your listeners to know that it’s never too late to start a hobby. We become part of our careers where we start loving it so much, but we might become a little bit of a hostage to it. But you have to, I think, break away from that somewhat and think about things that you’re like doing and, and these would be your hobbies if you have them. And  if not, it’s not too late to, to get them. There’s the Chinese  proverb when’s the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago. When’s the second best time? Right now.  So I think hobbies are the same way. If you haven’t really developed hobbies, I would not worry, chill out. And then I, and my partner Alan Patricof – he has been an investor for the past 50 years, starting a large private equity firm called Apax Partners, and then Greycroft, which is a multi-billion dollar venture firm – was also in intrigued by this issue of how do we get older Americans starting businesses, people with expertise and wisdom and network and skills. And so we came together to start the fund in the Spring of 2020.” On Innovation in the Longevity Economy“But what we’re more interested at Primetime, because we’re an early stage investment fund is the amount of innovation going on in the space. And so just to put a bookmark in there, since we launched in summer of 2020, so almost three years ago, we’ve looked at 1,300 startups that would be included in the longevity economy. This includes healthcare businesses, financial service businesses, consumer and media businesses. There is a lot of new ideas bubbling up because entrepreneurs have recognized, and  all the incumbents of this ecosystem have recognized we need to move faster to build the infrastructure we need to serve an older population.” On Digital Therapeutics“We do not invest in businesses that are in biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, but they are very aggressively investing in solutions in this area about each of our organs age. And then there’s been this new area that I’m really excited about called digital therapeutics. And Digital Therapeutics is an area that still needs to be FDA approved, but it’s basically using behavioral health in digital interventions as opposed to metabolic or pharmaceutical interventions to postpone, delay or prevent different types of diseases. So I think that there is tremendous investment going into this area. And so that’s from both government and the private sector.”  On Alternatives to Long-Term Care “And then the third area is around alternatives to long-term care. 90% of Americans think that in-home care – these are home health aids and folks that come help with your daily activities of living – is covered by Medicare –  and it’s as of today, it’s not. And the average American’s going to have a bill of $50,000 for in-home care. Now this excludes those big outliers of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and things where that home health bill can be millions of dollars. But in this case, most Americans are unprotected for this. And we came upon the nine different pillars that we share in the book. You are so absorbed in something that is bringing joy and that you are having fun doing. And it’s really, it’s almost impossible to be stressed and mobilized and play at the same time. And that’s a huge benefit. You see children and children’s natural desire is to play. They also are naturally inclined to be very present. And that is something that allows us to have that discernment as well. When we are able to look at this moment, we’re so many of us are involved in kind of getting through the day, getting through our lives, and we don’t look back and say, Oh, what did I actually enjoy about today? What didn’t I enjoy about today? What would I like to be different tomorrow? Play gives us that opportunity to practice presence. And I’ll go through those real quick and then we can kind of dig in if you would like. The Search, the first step, what’s interesting about this is when you are collecting information, you’re collecting experiences. You are accumulating knowledge. But the really cool thing about this step is you’re you’re sucking in all this information that will ultimately lead to a transition, except very often you’re not aware of it. It’s unintentional, which is so interesting. It’s going to lead you somewhere unexpected. The second stage, is the Struggle. The Struggle is when you start to disconnect from your previous identity, but you have not quite figured out the new identity where you are going to. We don’t like to talk about this stage because it’s really uncomfortable. It’s kind of miserable, honestly. And when we go through it, we tend to think we’re all alone and that we are the only people in the world going through this. Everybody else is on this glide path to success, and only we are struggling. But the key here is to know that when you’re in the midst of this struggle, you’re not alone, because everybody goes through it. And you feel like you’re standing still or you’re stuck, but you’re actually not, you’re actually moving forward. But this stage can last for quite a while for some people, and often it doesn’t end until you reach the third stage, which is the Stop. So the Stop is something that pulls you out of your routine. It could be something that you choose like, I quit my job or I retire.”   On Possible Selves  “I just wrote a piece in The New York Times about this, about the idea of thinking about your possible selves. Now that’s a psychological term, but essentially what it means is to imagine what you might be, what you could be, and to go beyond the daydream to take some sort of action on possible selves. So that means if, let’s say I’m pivoting in a career, take a course or shadow someone, or do an informational interview. Don’t just like sit with it and cogitate. You’ve got to  get out of your own brain.” On Expert Companions “I’ll give you a second one. This one I love and it is called the Expert Companion. You want to find your expert companion and speak to that person. So an Expert Companion, I’m borrowing that phrase actually from trauma psychologists who I interviewed who work with trauma patients, survivors who actually experience what’s called post-traumatic growth. We all know about post-traumatic stress. This is people who actually can grow and find something positive in the wake of a disaster. And these psychologists say that the survivor needs to talk to someone who can help them rethink their narrative. I think we all need an Expert Companion – all of us. And that person is someone who has an objective view of you, who can reflect back to you what your real strengths and talents are. And if you think about it, we all have sort of innate talents that very often we don’t even recognize because they come to us so easily. Or if we do recognize them, we tend to kind of diminish them because it seems like everybody can do that. We don’t recognize how unique it is. So your Expert Companion can reflect back to you where your strengths are, what they see in you. And it very often could be surprising to you – or it can certainly help you focus on where you want to pivot to. And by the way, the Expert Companion can be a coach like you, it could be as well it could be a friend or a family member. But the key is that they’re helping you. They’re not actually telling you what to do, which is really important. They don’t tell you: go do this. What they say is, what I see in you is this. Now that’s a psychological term, but essentially what it means is to imagine what you might be, what you could be, and to go beyond the daydream to take some sort of action on possible selves. So that means if, let’s say I’m pivoting in a career, take a course or shadow someone, or do an informational interview. Don’t just like sit with it and cogitate. You’ve got to  get out of your own brain.” On Expert Companions “I’ll give you a second one. This one I love and it is called the Expert Companion. You want to find your expert companion and speak to that person. So an Expert Companion, I’m borrowing that phrase actually from trauma psychologists who I interviewed who work with trauma patients, survivors who actually experience what’s called post-traumatic growth. We all know about post-traumatic stress. This is people who actually can grow and find something positive in the wake of a disaster. And these psychologists say that the survivor needs to talk to someone who can help them rethink their narrative. I think we all need an Expert Companion – all of us. And that person is someone who has an objective view of you, who can reflect back to you what your real strengths and talents are. And if you think about it, we all have sort of innate talents that very often we don’t even recognize because they come to us so easily. Or if we do recognize them, we tend to kind of diminish them because it seems like everybody can do that. We don’t recognize how unique it is. So your Expert Companion can reflect back to you where your strengths are, what they see in you. And it very often could be surprising to you – or it can certainly help you focus on where you want to pivot to. And by the way, the Expert Companion can be a coach like you, it could be as well it could be a friend or a family member. But the key is that they’re helping you. They’re not actually telling you what to do, which is really important. They don’t tell you: go do this. What they say is, what I see in you is this. Most other people are not thinking about this.”  On Aging in Place “The biggest fallacy that people have when they think about retirement is they say, “I’m going to age in place” and I’m putting quote marks in for your listeners age in place. Age in place means nothing. Age in place is a way to say, I’m going  to stay in my house and ignore the world and myself changing. So if you want to age in place, you have to modify your home. You have to set aside money for internal caregivers. You have to make a plan, you have to share it with your financial advisor, your kids, et cetera. You can’t just stay in your home and say, I’m aging in place – because that’s not a plan. So my big message to to your listeners is no matter what age you are, assuming you’re let’s say over 60, make a plan, cost it out, share it with your financial advisor, your elder care attorney, your attorney, your kids and and think about that.
