Steve Bradshaw is a recently retired Police Inspector. He has spent the majority of his policing career as a firearms officer before being promoted up the ranks where he became a Force Incident Manager, taking command of high risk critical incidents such as vehicle pursuits, firearms and major threats to the public.   But he also led another life as a budding actor and now retired, is free to fully explore his new career. He has appeared in several series aired on ITV and Netflix and has also appeared in several well know soap dramas.   Steve reflects on both careers and sees how they are not dissimilar. Richard Horton began his career with a short spell in accountancy before joining the police. Serving in the east side of Lancashire he performed several duties before becoming a Detective, a role he dedicated himself to for more than twenty years. Moving back into uniform towards the end of his career he was a response Sergeant overseeing a team of young and eager police officers.   But that isn’t the real story. Richard wrote an anonymous blog called The Night Jack in which he described the realities of policing. He won the Orwell prize for writing and donated his prize to police charities. You would have thought that would be a reason to celebrate, however The Times newspaper hacked into Richard’s emails and outed him as the author. Disciplinary action followed by his employer. Richard took the newspaper to court and eventually won his case.   Richard looks back philosophically on events and we discover that it still hasn’t  dampened his love of writing. Max Ehrmann(1872-1945) was a scholar and poet, born in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 16, 1872. He was the youngest of five children of German immigrants. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1894, and then studied law and philosophy at Harvard University.   After 10 years in the business world, Ehrmann retired so he could devote all his time to literary work.   During his life, Max Ehrmann contributed great thoughts to our literary lexicons, blending the magic of words and wisdom with his worthy observations.  His deep and abiding concern over social issues are reflected throughout his many works. He searched endlessly for spiritual contentment, often turning to nature as in his poem, The Noise of the City and Away. His philosophical writings are a search for social truth and peace—messages that never age.   Max Ehrmann wrote many poems, although none were well known until after his death. They have been collected into several books including the Desiderata of Happiness, and the Desiderata of Faith. His two most famous poems are Desiderata (1927) and A Prayer (1906).

A Mindful Life

Tom Wheelhouse spent several years in the Metropolitan police service and one of his career highlights was working on the 2012 London Olympics. However he soon came to realise that his dream job was becoming a nightmare and after careful thought handed in his resignation due to the toxic work atmosphere he found himself in.    With no job and no plan he managed to find work in the commercial sector for several years before realising what he really wanted to do was to help people who found themselves in the same situation he was in years earlier.   He set up his own company Mightify who assist police officers who have left the service after retirement or through resignation. Tom reminds us that there is a life worth living after leaving the police and give tips of how not to sell ourselves short when going for work. Sarah-Jane (SJ) Lennie served as a police officer for 18 years before struggling with her mental health and finally making a personally difficult decision to change her career.  It was only at the point of finally speaking out about her own experiences of mental ill-health that she came to realise how many of her colleagues were also suffering, though no one was talking.    Coming from a family of police officers, with both parents and husband serving officers, Sarah Jane has always cared deeply about the policing family.  Driven by the belief that police officers should not be expected to suffer, Sarah Jane has dedicated her new academic career to exploring the lived experience of police officers, examining their emotional experiences and their ability to express themselves emotionally. He chose to write about that experience and in 2017 his book "Blue, a memoire: Keeping the peace and falling to pieces" was published.   Searingly honest, sharing police work in a way perhaps no one has ever done before and the toll that it took on him, it quickly became a best seller. He became somewhat of a celebrity within the policing and wellbeing world and was soon in demand as both a public speaker and commentator both on radio and television.   He regularly travels to other police forces across the country and contributes to the police wellbeing debate. More recently he has highlighted the effects of the many years of cuts to policing budgets and how it affected the police ability to tackle crime in the 21st century.    John Sutherland is in reflective mood as we discuss his own policing experience and his new book due out in May this year "Crossing the line".

S3 Ep7: TONI WHITE: Men’s mental health advocate.

Lieutenant Colonel Will Meddings is an infantry officer in the Royal Anglian Regiment. Throughout his career he has commanded soldiers on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, in teams sizing  from a 12 man patrol fighting alongside the Afghan Army in Helmand, to a 100-strong company protecting advisors in Kabul. He now commands a battalion of 500 soldiers.   In 2016 Will was one of the founders of the Centre for Army Leadership at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a small organisation designed to improve leadership across the British Army. Around the same time he also set up The Army Leader, a leadership development website sharing practical leadership advice for junior leaders. It now has over 150,000 visitors a year. Lieutenant Colonel Will Meddings is an infantry officer in the Royal Anglian Regiment. Throughout his career he has commanded soldiers on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, in teams sizing  from a 12 man patrol fighting alongside the Afghan Army in Helmand, to a 100-strong company protecting advisors in Kabul. He now commands a battalion of 500 soldiers. S3 Ep6: EWEN SIM: Part 2 A mindfulness meditation.

At 1.48pm on Wednesday the 5th January 1983 the police control room at Blackpool broadcast a radio message that was to change the lives of many and would result in the loss of four human beings. Holiday maker Alistair Anthony was walking his Jack Russell dog along the lower walk when it went into the sea. He attempted a rescue but was washed away into a sea that has been described by many as some of the worst conditions they have ever seen. Blackpool police officers were quickly on the scene and attempted a rescue assisted by members of the public. That rescue failed. Every year since a memorial has been held and a tribute has been erected. It is a story of tragedy but within it are acts of bravery and compassion that are breathtaking yet never officially recognised. There was nothing common about the cold Katie Hutchings caught over the Easter of 2015. Within day's she was taken to hospital and put on the urgent transplant list. The virus has attacked her heart and had damaged it beyond repair. She eventually received a new donor heart and you would think that would have been the beginning of a new life. However it was to be the start of a nightmare she only just got through. Katies describes the setbacks she encountered on her long road to recovery and the conversations she has had to have with her husband and three children. She proudly displays the surgery scars her body has endured in a tribute to her donor and never forgets the sacrifice that was made. Katie would like all of us to be organ donors. My guest today comes from a large family of privilege and wealth. His own father was quite elderly when he was born and he was sent to boarding school at an early age where he was sexually abused. All this made my guest feel worthless and he struggled to come to terms with his own emotions. He chose alcohol to take the pain away. As he got older he would enter into relationships which would ultimately fail. Feeling abandoned he would harass his ex partners which led to his incarceration. Whilst in prison he slowly learnt to love himself and addressed his own actions. He has asked to remain anonymous to protect the victims and his family.
