Nerds Book Recommendation: Joe Hill’s Full Throttle

Hey there Nerds! We're tackling one of the more prolific writers this month in a sort of two-for-one. This cast is all about an OG horror writer: Stephen King and his new collection If It Bleeds. But perhaps what we liked better than the workman like prose of King's collection is the jucy AF watermelon drink Shaun made! Ok, you'll see in the first two minutes that we really like the drink and really didn't like the book.  If you want to catch the second half of this horror double header month, pick up a copy of Joe Hill's If it Bleeds. That's right, King the younger is up right after King the Elder.

Nerds TV Review: Netflix’s The Witcher

Saddle up Roach and let's get ready to fight some monsters, in The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski! If high fantasy and European fables are your thing, then The Witcher series will be too.  For tonight's cocktail, we're drinking a version of Geralt's white honey potion for removal of toxins and poisons -- which, if you've been reading, will know that for us, is absinthe. Essentially, it's a hot toddy so you'll need the following: 3 oz your favorite bourbon (we're using Black Button Straight Four Grain ) 6 oz tea 1 tbs honey 1 cinnamon stick   To make, steep the tea. Separately, simmer the honey, lemon and bourbon on the stove top for at least 20 minutes.  Combine and feel immediately better thanks to the warm glow of bourbon. Cheers, Nerds!

Hello nerds! Welcome to March's book club recommendation, Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Listen in as we talk about space cavaliers, bone necromancy, and the deathless emperor.  But first: we try yet another absinthe cocktail. And yet again we warn you we didn't like it. Like at all. But for reference, and if you too like pain, here's the recipe: 3/4 oz absinthe 3/4 oz elderflower liquor 3/4 oz Lillet blanc 1 dash London dry gin 3/4 oz lemon juice garnish with a lemon twist (courtesy of liquor.com) While this is supposed to be a corpse revivier -- used to help hangovers that coffee just can't cure -- I'd leave all of those ingredients in your bar and settle for an Irish Coffee instead. October Book Club: HP Lovecraft

Grab your shaker and copy of Frank Herbert's Dune for our first read of the fall! We've got a special episode here where we mix up and compare not one, but two cocktails!    The recipe below comes from our friends over at liquor.com: Ingredients1 lime wedge2 jalapeno coins, seeds removed2 ounces blanco tequila1/2 ounce orange liqueur1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed1/2 ounce agave syrupGarnish: salt rimGarnish: jalapeno coin StepsRub the rim of a rocks glass with a lime wedge, dip the rim in salt to coat, and set aside. Add the jalapeno coins to a shaker and gently muddle. Add the blanco tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and agave syrup, plus ice, and shake until well-chilled. Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a jalapeno coin.   For our second drink of the night, repeat the above recipe, but replace tequila with mezcal -- read more about this smokey tequila relative here -- and let your world be changed. Join us as we give our *HOT* takes on The City We Became and down a Smoked Manhattan. But before we get too far, here's our recipe for the Manhattan, courtesy of our friends over at Liquor.com: 2 parts whiskey 1 part sweet Vermouth one dash Angostura bitters For the smoked part, we used hickory chunks found in any fine purveyor of smoking wood for smokers. Simply light the wood on fire -- however you can do it, but we used a garden weed burner/ice melter -- let it stay lit for a few seconds, then, extinguish the wood by placing a glass over the top and smothering it. For this recipe, we left out the traditional cherry, since we we going for something less sweet. As far as our take on the book, you'll just have to listen!
