Rank #1: Doug Lisle: self esteem, success and evolutionary psychology.

Early last year I made a youtube video called my argument against moderation. I received a lot of great feedback from this video, including a number of people recommending I read The Pleasure Trap by Doug Lisle and Alan Goldhammer. Of course I turned straight to chapter 14 and started reading about The Myths of Moderation and this is still my favourite chapter I've ever read. It really helped me to know that some genuine experts in diet and psychology were also thinking along similar lines to me and that perhaps I wasn't just some crazy nut job after all!

While in Santa Rosa I was lucky enough to be able to visit True North Health Centre a couple of times. When I walked in the doors I felt instantly at home. It was such a nice feeling to be surrounded by people who were dedicating themselves to good health and wellbeing, a really positive, loving and caring environment. The founder of True North, Dr Alan Goldhammer was very kind to take some time out of his day to sit down with me for this conversation.

Kevin's laboratory investigates how metabolism and the brain adapt in response to a variety of interventions to diet and physical actvity. They perform experiments in both humans and rodents to better understand the complex mechanisms regulating macronutrient metabolism, body composition, and energy expenditure. A unique aspect of their laboratory involves the development of mathematical models to quantitatively describe, explain, integrate, and predict their experimental results.

Rank #5: Anna Weatherlake: Beauty, fashion, wellness and life with less harm.

Podcast cover

I first came across Anna Weatherlake at World Vegan day in Melbourne last year, where we were both speakers. I've never had any interest at all in fashion, beauty, make up etc. until I heard her speak about them. I only heard 10 minutes of her talk before my boy Teddy dragged me away, but I knew I wanted to hear more of what she had to say.

Rank #6: Irminne van Dyken: Avoiding the Surgeon's Scalpel

Podcast cover
Read more
Irminne van Dyken is one of a rare breed in this world, she's actively trying to put herself out of business. It's so refreshing to me to hear from a surgeon who does not promote surgery as the best option in most cases.

I've had the great privilege to hear her speak a couple of times now at different events and get to know her and her husband Russell too. As a result I thought I knew mostly how this conversation was going to go before we started, turns out I was very pleasantly surprised! Irminne is a wealth of information on all things health and wellbeing. We talked about their journey to the plant based lifestyle and how this has affected her practice as a surgeon, we talked about how to avoid the surgeon's knife as well as one of my favourite topics, how to cultivate a healthy microbiome.

This conversation was refreshing and enlightening for me, I hope you enjoy it too!

Rank #7: Adam Guthrie: From heart attack patient to Iron Man

I was lucky enough to be in the audience to hear Adam speak as part of the nutrition in health symposium in Melbourne last month. His journey from heart attack patient to iron man was incredibly moving and inspiring. He totally filled the room with his energy and passion.

Until I heard him speak that night I didn’t know much about him and of course when a bit of time opened up the following day I jumped at the chance to sit down with him. I hadn’t prepared a single question, talking point or note, we just decided to wing it and I really could not be happier with the conversation that followed. We laughed, we cried, we took a deep dive into addiction, mindfulness and emotion.

I’m now proud to call Adam a friend, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Rank #8: Anna Chisolm on personal evolution and finding work you love.

Podcast cover
Read more
I first met Anna last year when she invited me to appear on her podcast. It was the first podcast I’d appeared on and I really enjoyed the chance to have a long conversation where I could explain myself fully, rather than the 3 minute news grabs I’d done up to that point in time. Since that first conversation I’ve become really interested in doing more podcasts and in the end I decided to start my own , I have Anna to thanks for planting that seed in me.

Anna is much more than a podcast host. She’s a former social worker who has evolved into a health coach. She recognises that good health goes far beyond the plate, it’s about a wholistic approach to lifestyle and behaviour change.

In this podcast we covered a lot of ground. We talked about her evolution from a standard Australian diet to vegan and on to whole food plant based. We talked about her evolution from social work in hospitals to taking the risk and stepping outside her comfort zone to change careers and start her own business as a health coach.

I hope you enjoy the conversation!

Rank #9: Mat Grils lives outside the comfort zone.

A few months ago a rather hard core dude called Matt Girls came across my radar somehow and we chatted a little via emails. Perhaps there was something about my "extreme" Spud Fit Challenge that interested him, after all he is a pretty extreme dude himself! He told me he was coming to Melbourne to do this ridiculous race called the Down Under 135 - 135miles (217kms) of continuous running through the Lerderderg Gorge with around 9000m of elevation gain and decent. I told my wife he was coming and asked if she thought it would be too forward of me to ask if I could crew for him. I hardly knew him after all and had only ever talked to him via messages, surely I should get to know him a little better before I ask to tag along on one of his crazy challenges?! Mandy encouraged me to ask and see what happens. When I got home I opened up my computer to message him and found that he'd already written to me... to ask me to crew for him! A few days later we met in a small, gravel car park at the edge of Bacchus Marsh, around half an hour before the start of the race.

Rich Roll is a plant based ultra endurance athlete and host of the super successful Rich Roll Podcast. Rich has battled his own demons with addiction and not only lived to tell the tale but also inspire countless others to take back control of their lives.

Rich has been a big influence on me for quite a while now. As a long time fan of The Rich Roll Podcast it was quite an honour to be invited to join him as a guest on his show last year. It was an experience I enjoyed so much that I wanted to do it more often which resulted in me starting my own podcast.
