More Energy - The U.S. Energy Secretary urged domestic oil refiners this month to not further increase exports of fuels like gasoline and diesel, adding that the Biden administration may need to consider taking action if the plants do not build inventories. - "Given the historic level of U.S. refined product exports, I again urge you to focus in the near term on building inventories in the United States, rather than selling down current stocks and further increasing exports," Granholm said in the letter sent to refiners, a copy of which was seen by Reuters. - WAIT WHAT? The Biden Admin is responsible for 1 million barrels per day China Update - Going from Bad to Worse - Chinese technology giants are coming off the back of their worst quarter of growth in history as a big slowdown in the world's second-largest economy, stoked by Beijing's strict Covid policy - Retail sales decreased year-over year in April and May due to the resurgence of Covid-19 in Shanghai and other major cities, and has slowly recovered in June - AND - China's technology sector continues to contend with a much stricter regulatory environment. Over the past two years, China has introduced tougher policy in areas from gaming to data protection. - WORST OVER- ? Keep Reading ... Keep Reading - Authorities in China's southern city of Shenzhen shut the world's largest electronics market of Huaqiangbei and suspended service at 24 subway stations on Monday in a bid to curb an outbreak of COVID-19. - Subway services at 24 stations in the central districts of Futian and Luohu were also halted, according to official local media. China - Worst Not Over - Profits at China's industrial firms sank in July, reversing previous gains as fresh COVID-19 curbs dragged down demand and squeezed factory margins, while power shortages due to heatwaves threatened production. - Profits at China's industrial firms fell 1.1% in January-July from a year earlier, wiping out the 1.0% growth logged during the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Saturday. Lighter Note - A mint condition Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6 million Sunday, blasting into the record books as the most ever paid for sports memorabilia in a market that has grown exponentially more lucrative in recent years. - The rare Mantle card eclipsed the record just posted a few months ago — $9.3 million for the jersey worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the contentious “Hand of God” goal in soccer's 1986 World Cup. Is this a Good Idea? - The Biden administration plans to ask the U.S. Congress to approve an estimated $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, including 60 anti-ship missiles and 100 air-to-air missiles, Housing Market --Home Partners of America, the single-family landlord owned by Blackstone Inc., will stop buying homes in 38 US cities, becoming the latest institutional investor to back away from an overheated housing market. - Identical to Car Lease... ---- Fiind a Home, They Buy it and lease back to you, At end you can renew, or buy, or walk away - Lease to Purchase Homes - Check it out - https://www.homepartners.com/ Twitter - Received another "NO THANKS - PLEASE CANCEL" from Elon Musk - Is this going to happen? Tech - Sea Change or One Off? - Dell Technologies Inc posted its slowest revenue growth in six quarters on Thursday as a surge in the dollar and COVID-19 flare-ups in major market China offset a jump in its enterprise-focused business. - The greenback surge has this year eaten into the earnings of technology firms from Microsoft Inc to Apple Inc , compounding pressure from a drop in consumer spending on electronics such as personal computers and smartphones. - Dell's revenue rose 9% to $26.43 billion in the quarter to July 29 and was roughly in line with market expectations, according to Refinitiv data. - Consumer revenue fell 9%, echoing weakness seen at Intel Corp and Lenovo Group as demand weakened after a pandemic-fueled boom and decades-high inflation prompted consumers to prioritize essentials. "Companies would rather not pay that tax ... They have this window, and you can be assured they're going to take advantage of it." Pfizer - New Income Source - Pfizer Inc will buy blood disorder drugmaker Global Blood Therapeutics in a $5.4 billion deal, as it looks to boost its pipeline to combat a potential slowdown in COVID product demand that analysts anticipate from falling cases. - GBT makes Oxbryta which was first approved in 2019 to treat sickle cell disease among patients aged 12 years or older. - Sickle Cell Tech layoffs - Several companies have either discussed layoffs or stop hire mandates - Microsoft is asking managers to reduce employee expenses on business travel and outside training, according to WSJ Credit Card Debt - Americans have opened 233 million credit card accounts since April, the largest increase since 2008. - Credit card debt is up 13% since April, the largest increase since 2001. - Total credit card debt is set to cross $1 trillion for the first time ever. - "Is the bubble is expanding?" - The Kobeissi Letter HOT Chart - Everyone is doing these.... - Comparing 2006-2009 to today (markets) Dreaded DJIA Chart Another one.... Another One Berkshire - good and bad - Operating earnings - It marked a 38.8% increase from the same quarter a year ago. - However, the company posted a $53 billion loss on its investments during the quarter. ----- Buffet again asked investors to not focus on the quarterly fluctuations in its equity investments. - - "The amount of investment gains/losses in any given quarter is usually meaningless and delivers figures for net earnings per share that can be extremely misleading to investors who have little or no knowledge of accounting rules," Berkshire said in a statement. - Berkshire said it spent approximately $1 billion in share repurchases during the second quarter, bringing the six-month total to $4.2 billion. ELON - Still in the news - Elon Musk on Saturday challenged Twitter Inc Chief Executive Officer Parag Agrawal to a public debate about the percentage of bots on the social media platform. - Uhhhhh - isn't that what is going on? - "Let him prove to the public that Twitter has <5% fake or spam daily users!," Musk said in a tweet. - Big issue moving forward is wheter the banks will fund this deal. --- If they do fund, way overpriced. If they do not fund - back dealings and other companies may look elsewhere for deal funding. Amazon - BUYING - Spying? - Amazon is acquiring iRobot for $61 a share, an all-cash deal that values the Roomba maker at $1.7 billion, the companies announced Friday. - Interesting acquisition - perhaps one of the bigger sellers on Amazon - HOWEVER - some discussion about they real reason that they are buying this company is so that they can MAP YOUR HOUSE - Amazon with Alexa, Ring and Eero is already in American homes. Adding iRobot’s mapping technology will further its understanding of what takes place in those households. - A Bloomberg article suggests that Amazon may seek  to monetize the data to sell to marketers. “The size of your house is a pretty good proxy for your wealth. A floor covered in toys means you likely have kids. A household without much furniture is a household to which you can try to sell more furniture. This is all useful intel for a company such as Amazon which, you may have noticed, is in the business of selling stuff.” More Amazon -- The Lollipop Hustle - Dum-Dums (Spangler Candy Company) cheaper on Amazon through 3rd party than direct. ---- DIVERTING (Getting order, buy from other outlets and have it shipped directly) --- SO, if products can be purchased somewhere at lover price - why is this a problem? Isn't this the whole point of the 3rd parties? -------- IF you do not want your products sold for less, don't sell them for less to others. From MonkeyPox to Polio?? - Hundreds of other people could have polio after an adult in a suburb of New York City caught the virus and suffered paralysis last month, the state's top health official said this week. - New York State Health Commissioner Mary Bassett warned that the confirmed polio case in an unvaccinated adult, coupled with the detection of the virus in sewage outside the nation's largest city could, indicate a bigger outbreak is underway. ------ Can we discuss sewage testing? - The U.S. was declared polio free in 1979 and a case had not originated in the country since then, but travelers have occasionally brought the virus into the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some earnings news - Upstart misses by $0.07, misses on revs; guides Q3 EPS below consensus, revs below consensus --- Previously guided down last month and already leaking - Nvidia - Pre-announced ahead of 8/24 earnings - warned its Q2 revenue will be $6.7 billion versus its prior outlook of $8.10 billion due primarily to a lower sell-in of gaming products. Fleur de sel has been collected since ancient times, and was traditionally used as a purgative and salve. It is now used as a finishing salt to flavor and garnish food Deal Time - AppLovin has submitted a compelling non-binding proposal to the Board of Directors of Unity Software (U) to combine AppLovin with Unity in a transaction where each outstanding share of Unity common stock would be exchanged for 1.152 shares of AppLovin Class A voting common stock and 0.314 shares of AppLovin Class C non-voting common stock. - Could be some anti-trust and it is an all stock deal - Has not been agreed to yet by both parties - Would expect Unity to want more - but Applovin pockets not too deep Crytpo - Hack Attack - Thieves stole an estimated $190 million from U.S. crypto firm Nomad last week. - It was the seventh hack of 2022 to target an increasingly important cog in the crypto machine: Blockchain "bridges" - strings of code that help move crypto coins between different applications. - So far this year, hackers have stolen crypto worth some $1.2 billion from bridges - Perhaps start with solid code/hack proof and then build the bridge (seems like bridge built from top down) Softbank - Vision Fund - Losing all sorts of money - In fact - largest loss ever. - SoftBank’s quarterly losses, worth around 3.2 trillion yen ($24.5 billion), were its largest in history - took back almost all gains made since 2017 Vision Fund Cumulative Gains 420 Stocks ... BUT: - IMF's World Economic Outlook revised down; risks to the outlook 'overwhelmingly' to the downside - The baseline forecast is for growth to slow from 6.1 percent last year to 3.2 percent in 2022, 0.4 percentage point lower than in the April 2022 World Economic Outlook. - Lower growth earlier this year, reduced household purchasing power, and tighter monetary policy drove a downward revision of 1.4 percentage points in the United States. - In China, further lockdowns and the deepening real estate crisis have led growth to be revised down by 1.1 percentage points, with major global spillovers. - And in Europe, significant downgrades reflect spillovers from the war in Ukraine and tighter monetary policy. - In 2023, disinflationary monetary policy is expected to bite, with global output growing by just 2.9 percent. - The risks to the outlook are overwhelmingly tilted to the downside. AND............... - CNBC Fed Survey shows 55% probability of recession over the next 12 months; expects Fed to start cutting rates next year  But, Then There is This - White House puts out a blog - "How Do Economists Determine Whether the Economy Is in a Recession? " - What is a recession? While some maintain that two consecutive quarters of falling real GDP constitute a recession, that is neither the official definition nor the way economists evaluate the state of the business cycle. Instead, both official determinations of recessions and economists’ assessment of economic activity are based on a holistic look at the data—including the labor market, consumer and business spending, industrial production, and incomes. Based on these data, it is unlikely that the decline in GDP in the first quarter of this year—even if followed by another GDP decline in the second quarter—indicates a recession. - Recession probabilities are never zero, but trends in the data through the first half of this year used to determine a recession are not indicating a downturn. - - - Interesting timing with 2Q GDP coming this week. (Thursday) Some thoughts: - SNAP had a terrible quarter and the when the stock reported results at the end of last week - shares caved in hard. - This is not the first time that advertisers pulled back and the company will really need to rethink their strategy. - The fact that advertisers are being much more cautious is a sign that there is a spending issue that could become problematic. - SNAP shares down 35% - Earnings coming this week - META, GOOG, AAPL, MSFT Walmart - Retail - Bad news - Early interim report - before earnings 8/16/2022 - Company issues upside guidance for revenue - stoked by higher prices (inflation) - Company also issues downside guidance for earnings ( margin squeeze on inflation) - - - Co issues downside guidance for Q2 (Jul), sees EPS to decline 8 to 9% yr/yr, or about $1.62-1.64, excluding non-recurring items, vs. $1.81 S&P Capital IQ Consensus. - - - Co issues downside guidance for FY23 (Jan), sees EPS to decline 11 to 13% yr/yr, or about $5.62-5.75, excluding non-recurring items, vs. $6.39 S&P Capital IQ Consensus. - - - Excluding divestitures, adjusted earnings per share for the full year is expected to decline 10 to 12%. MonkeyPox - WHO: The rapidly spreading monkeypox outbreak represents a global health emergency - The WHO label - a "public health emergency of international concern" - is designed to sound an alarm that a coordinated international response is needed and could unlock funding and global efforts to collaborate on sharing vaccines and treatments. - The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 14,000 cases of monkeypox worldwide, with five deaths reported in Africa - SIGA, EBS Peak Musk???? - Enough already...... - Tesla Inc has received a second subpoena from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over its Chief Executive Elon Musk's tweets in 2018 about taking the company private, the electric automaker disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday. - Twitter saga - The Wall Street Journal said that Mr Musk was engaged in a brief affair late last year with Ms Shanahan. - - - This prompted Mr Brin to file for divorce earlier this year and ended the long friendship between the two high-profile technology billionaires. - Tesla dumps 75% of their Bitcoin - for a loss. $170 million impairment charge on losses (not sure if that is the extent of losses or just amount taken as impairment MUSK MONDAY TWEET - "The amount of attention on me has gone supernova, which super sucks. Unfortunately, even trivial articles about me generate a lot of clicks 🙁 Will try my best to be heads down focused on doing useful things for civilization." - EVEN HE KNOWS PEAK MUSK Peak Rates - or just a breather? - With all the fear over inflation - rates coming down - Yield curve still flat after 2 year - Inverted for most of curve - 2/10 negative - BUT - 10-year down from 3.5 in March to 2.80% now Some Housing numbers - U.S. existing home sales fell for a fifth straight month in June to the lowest level in two years as record-high prices and fast-rising interest rates make buying a home too expensive for a growing share of American households. - Meanwhile Homebuilders have a great month - lesson to be learned --- Fed rates more important looking ahead (higher rates is bad for homebulders) --- NAHB and confidence could be a bottom call scenario Nice or Weird? - Raising Cane's CEO Todd Graves said that he has purchased 50,000 Mega Millions tickets and promised to share the $810 million prize with all of his employees if one of the tickets hits the jackpot. - Should one the tickets win the jackpot, every employee of the fast food chain could walk away with thousands of dollars, Raising Cane's said in a news release provided to CBS News. (3,000+ employees) Something to Ponder - Natural Gas price squeeze could lead to additional switching to crude from gas. - Russia could really put the screws with delays or cut of gas pipeline and that could be problems for global crude pricing One more... - Closed Loop - some companies in parts of China will require little movement of employees or possible live and work on site. Panama - Food Costs - Getting Real - The Panamanian government announced on Monday it will regulate the price of 72 food items following weeks of angry protests and street blockades demanding the government take measures to stem the quickly rising cost of living. - "With the regulation of the 72 products, the cost of the basic food basket would decrease by 30%, a savings of more than $80," the president's office said in a statement, after the government and powerful unions, with the Catholic Church acting as a mediator, reached an agreement. 420 Stocks ...
