Reducing Your Stress By Increasing Your Hope

Unless you are living in a cave, you may have more Stress and less Hope in your life today than you did a short time ago. Pandemics can do that. So can life.

Over the years, I’ve learned that stress is usually a result of fear.

Feeling Stress of never getting off the hamster wheel.

Feeling Stress fear from uncertainty.

Feeling Stress from a lack of adequate information.

It doesn’t matter where your fear originates. The solution is re-framing your mindset to see things as they are. When you can do that, you can see things are that can be.

Having a re-frame mindset will allow you to create Hope, reduce Stress, and become unstoppable.

Time To Reinvent Your Life?

The past months have created a massive disruption in our lives. Why not taking advantage of the journey back to normal and switch things up?

Whether you want a few tweaks or total reinvention - the process is the same:

1) You must first acknowledge something needs changing. Listen to your gut.

2) Be honest. Your inner thoughts and feelings are real. They are telling you what you desire. Honor them.

3) Clearly understand WHY you want to reinvent. It creates excitement the power that will move you forward.

4) Ask yourself, "What ONE thing can I do, or NOT do, that will have the most significant and immediate impact on my life?"

5) Set an initial sprint goal of at least 90 days.

6) Define what actions you will take to drive your goal and take action daily.

Sometimes you must start a journey without knowing your destination. Begin with what you know. Explore the possibilities until you discover your path.

Productivity While Working at Home

You may be finding yourself tweaking your productivity habits in the last few weeks. If you are working from your home with children around you, you are in for some significant challenges.

As a guy who has maintained a home-based officer for the better part of 30 years, I have some advice:

1) Productivity is not about getting more done. It’s about being more efficient. When working at home, you will instantly have more productive hours than commuting to an office filled with distractions.

2) Holding time for what must be done is essential. Be sure to account for every responsibility on your To-Do list. That includes extra time for kids and pets. You’re going to need it.

3) Rituals, schedules, and taking breaks are your friend. Figure what works best and stick to your plan.

4) Be flexible. When life is upside down like it is these days, you can’t expect every plan to go perfectly. There’s no need for frustration. Take a breath. Deal with the issue. Get back on track.

Most folks have more flexibility than ever when working from your home. As long as you get your job done, everything will be fine. Who knows? You might enjoy it more than you think.

How To Break Bad Habits

Have you struggled to break a habit?

Bad habits are not good. They will mess up your day. They are also not permanent. You weren’t born with bad habits, and you are not required under penalty of law to keep bad habits.

Since there’s no real reason to keep bad habits, let’s replace them the easy way.

Nobody likes to give up what’s comfortable - even if it’s not serving you. Instead, start a new behavior and replace the bad before it mucks up your life again.

Breaking bad habits is doing new behaviors instead of old behaviors. No muss. No-fuss. Be consistent and persistent, and you will wipe that old habit away forever.

Be Who You Are

Are you striving for something different?

I have a client who, after years of poor eating habits, had gained over 100 pounds. She decided to get healthy - and had no idea where to begin.

My advice was simple.

If your mind is telling you something you are doing is NOT who you are - give up what you are NOT.

In her case, not exercising was making her somebody she didn’t want to be. Going to the gym wasn’t top of mind; it was just the first choice in the path to becoming herself.

Are you not making enough money? Give up what is keeping you busy and try something new.

Are you spending too much time with activities that are keeping you, NOT you? Please give it up and do things that feel you like.

Be who you are, not who you are not.

So simple.

Reducing Stress By Changing Influence

Did you know that Influence is causing stress in your day?

Your subconscious mind is listening. Opinions are forming. Thoughts are racing. Actions are happening, Usually without you knowing.

The dictionary defines Influence as; the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others.

We are all influenced by much news. Too many Netflix movies. Non-stop social media, and the most significant - too much time with ourselves. All are causing us to experience stress.

There is a quick way to reduce stress.

Cut off everything that is capturing your attention and filling your mind. Especially if it is with less than motivating thoughts.

When you cut negative, you reduce stress. That will leave time for positive thoughts and more fulfilling experiences.

In crazy times, being your own biggest influencer is a powerful stress-reducing tool.

Maintaining Self Discipline When Bored

If you ask any successful person what is most important to achieving goals, they will say two things:

1) Self-Discipline is number one. If you can’t get yourself to do what is necessary, nobody will do it for you.

2) The person with the most self-discipline wins.

At the gym, office, school, everywhere. The person who puts in the effort always rises to the top.

Since most of us are in self-quarantine at home, now it might be useful to master self-discipline.

1) Decide on your goal and allow yourself to feel the pleasure and excitement of living it every day.

2) Shift your focus to the pain you will feel if you don’t get it. Get mad. Get upset. Get determined to create it.

3) Prioritize your daily actions so that everything else is less important than your goal.

You will always work harder to avoid pain than to get pleasure. Harness that power to get what you want.

3 Steps To Getting The Success You Want

Success is a funny word. Generic yet descriptive, success is different for everyone. Whatever success means to you, there is a fast-path way to get it:

1) Decide. Deciding to move in a new direction is scary - but it’s the only way to establish forward momentum. You must choose to cut off anything that is holding you back and focus on what you want.

2) Build. The rest of the world is living on auto-pilot. You will stand out when you put your head down, dig in, get to work, and build your dream. It may not easy in the beginning, but everything will get much easier once you get moving.

3) Promote. Are you seeking a new job, finding a new relationship, or selling a product for your business? Nothing will happen until you let the world know what you are doing. When you do, everything happens.

Decide. Build. Promote. Repeat. That’s how dreams become real.

Producing More Productivity

Are you find yourself needing to get more done? You might consider creating more productivity.

The first rule of being more productive is deciding what is important to you. The second rule is to take control of your day.

A few simple adjustments can change everything:

1) Say, “Yes” to yourself before you say it to others. Meetings, phone calls, casual conversations. If that doesn’t work, say “No” to anything not currently on your list.

2) Control where you focus your attention.  Including incoming communication like email and social media. Avoid being recruited onto someone else’s To-Do list.

3) No matter how much control you gain, interruptions are always around. You may as well expect, plan, and allow time for them.

4) Only schedule 50% of your schedule. That will allow time for the unexpected. If nothing shows up, stay focused on what you need to complete.

5) Multi-tasking is a myth. If possible, finish one task before the next. You cross the finish line sooner.

What happens next? EVERYTHING! Keep moving forward, and you’ll get everything you want.

Neutralizing Negative Thoughts

In times like these, it's easy to find yourself with more negative thoughts than usual.

When I was training my Pilot Certificate, I was surprised by the emphasis put on the health of a pilots' state of mind. Negative thoughts are hazardous to flying - and life in general.

The next time you are feeling a negative thought nudging its way into your day, try this:

1) Recognize it. The first step toward neutralizing hazardous negative thinking is to recognize it.

2) Label it. Identify why the lousy thought is coming into your mind and slap a label on it. When you know what to call it, you'll know what to do next.

3) Prescribe an antidote that will make the underlying cause go away and wash away the negative.

It can be easy to get caught up negative and find yourself overwhelmed. Taking a few minutes to follow these steps will make room for more positive in your life.

Great Relationships in Four Steps

Every day you navigate the world - which usually involves other people.

Since the quality of your life is dependent on the quality of your relationships, it makes sense to understand how to develop a great rapport.

Every great relationship follows 4 steps:

1) Curiosity. Everybody is curious about the people they meet. If you want to meet great people, be interesting. The more curious they are about you, the better.

2) Enlightenment. Once curiosity peaks, interest will be to grow. People want to know more about you.

3) Commitment. With more knowledge connections deepen.

4)  Action. Once you reach commitment, people become open and willing to join your world.

Whether personal or business, all relationships follow the same path.  If not, the relationship ends.

While their styles are different, both dogs run because they love it. Both are winners, Both are happy dogs.

The fix is to offload those items into a trusted place. You need to download your brain.

Gather up those loose ends and enter them into a journal or software app and put it away.  As long as you remember where you put it - those Open Loops will go away.

Change Yourself. Change Everything Else.

People have always sought change for themselves, their life, or the world.

If you want to change, there is a constant truth; you must change before anything else changes.

Many smart folks agree -

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Leo Tolstoy, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”

What about Albert Einstein?

“The world, as we have created, is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

Do you want to change something about today, tomorrow, or the future? You must change before anything else changes.

Have you learned lessons from past experiences? You have already changed, and your future is better for it.

Rumi said, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

If tomorrow you want to be better than today and yesterday, something has to change. That something is you.

If you want to make more money, serve more. Do you want to be happier? If you want this life to be well-lived, something has to change today. That something is you.

What if you want everything about your life to be perfect? Listen to Winston Churchill. “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

It’s so simple.

You Must Change Before Anything Else Changes.

It will also require an immediate response.

It could be a potential customer who wants to do business and need prompt attention.

It may be a health emergency.

In any case, a quick response is your friend. But what do you after the initial surprise settles?

1) Pause. Take a step back and take a breath. It’s time to get a 30,000-foot overview and gain perspective on what is going on in your life. This is a time to be more conservative in your actions.

2) Prepare. Whether it’s serving your clients or paying your mortgage, once you have perspective, your next step is to identify what must be done to achieve success. Be a good Scout. Be prepared.

3) Protect. Now that you understand and are prepared, it’s time to identify the areas that will need protection. Your goals is to proactively put in place whatever is required to protect what you’ve built.

Should You Master Mind?

In 1938 Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" popularized the concept of a Master Mind. Not a character in an Austin Powers movie, but the true path to success for anybody who wants it.

According to Hill, a Master Mind is "the coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose."

It gets better.

"No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible, intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind".

And better.

With PERSISTENCE and intelligence, and use discrimination in the selection of your "Master Mind" group, your objective will have been half-way reached, even before you begin to recognize it.

Did he say half-way reached?

Networking and collaboration are like a task on a To-Do list. If you want more, a Master Mind is how you get it.

How To Stay Focused on What You Want

As a child, the most important thing on my mind was heading out the door for an endless adventure. It usually ended in a game of Hide-And-Seek.

As we grow into adults, we tend to have other important items that distract us and our days. Eat, sleep, pay bills, feed the dog, take care of the kids, mow the lawn. We stay busy until we realize -

Since when did day-to-day tasks become more important than life-long dreams?

Steven Covey reminded us of the power of focusing on what's most important in our life. When things get busy, get it done, and get back to focusing on what you want.

I wonder if it’s time to put yourself, your dreams, and your future back on the important list?

Release Stress With Structure

Would you like to have less stress in your life and more fun? Of course, you would. But how is that possible in today’s world?

In my life, I’ve encountered two approaches to managing stress that always appear:

1) Many people blow off stress by acting spontaneously and doing something crazy.

2) Others create a constant routine and build a predictable structure into their lives.

Studies support the effectiveness of choosing either. When you combine both is where the fun happens.

When you take the time to tame the craziness in your life and create a structured day-to-day approach, you will find yourself with more time for spontaneous activity. And you will do it without having the stress of what think you should be doing.

Structure your life for peace of mind. Feed your soul with spontaneity.

Are You Blocking Your Happiness?

Is there something in your life that you are resisting?

The old saying, "What you resist will persist" is always at play. It is a potent force in both enhancing and debilitating ways.

In my life, I have learned the root cause of anything I resist is either fear of change or misdirected focus. Others say, “I haven't learned my lesson."

In any case, the solution has always been:

1) Identify the unwanted issue that is persisting.

2) Identify what the desire instead of the problem issue.

3) Summon the courage to stop resisting. Accept that you have learned the lesson. Commit to learning a new one.

What you resist will persist. Sometimes the only way to win the fight is to give up the fight.

How To Figure Out What You Want

What if there was a magic formula for figuring out what to do next? I prefer to think of it as resetting your mind and re-discovering yourself.

Most people are living in a continual state of craziness. 20 years later, they realize they have no idea what makes them happy.

Worse, they have no idea how to get off the carousel and reset.

If that’s you, try this:

1) Slow down and make space. The secret to finding YOU is spending time with YOU.

2) Take care of yourself and allow the buzz to drain from your daily experience. Claim if for yourself that extra space for yourself.

3) As your mind clears, you may find that you want to rush back to the craziness. Please don’t do it. Focus instead on remembering the things you most enjoy.

4) Explore the possibilities that pop into your mind. Try them on for size. Keep what you like. Toss those you don’t.

5) Finally. Never lock yourself into a commitment or no timeline for figuring things out. You can do that after you know what you want.

Figuring out what you want is about re-discovering yourself again. When you allow time to do that, everything gets better.

Stop smoking, lose weight, get a better job - or another job?

Transformation always follows the same predictable stages:

Stage 1: Pre-contemplation. This stage appears when an idea pops into your head for the first time.

Stage 2: Contemplation. This middle ground is where most folks get stuck. It can go on for a lifetime.

Stage 3: Determination. Moving past contemplation, you make up your mind, dig in your heals, and make your plan.

Stage 4: Action. There is no turning back until you get what you want.

Stage 5: Maintenance. This stage is all about keeping what you have acquired - no matter what. This stage may also last your entire life.

On the surface, there are two choices:

1) You choose to expand and make your life and world-view bigger, brighter, and better. You decide to grow wiser, more content, and happier.

2) You choose or accept and contract. Everything gets smaller, dimmer, and less satisfying.

If you dig deeper, you will find your choice is more of a combination of the two. In turbulent times and good times.

The secret is to get rid of anything that doesn’t serve you and replace it with everything that does - at the same time.

A couple of days ago, I called a friend in Connecticut. I wanted to catch up and see if we could solve the problems of the world over the course of a phone call.

When he picked up the phone, I asked what he was doing to save the world?

Yes, I was somewhat joking, but his answer didn’t surprise me.

“I only watch 20-minutes of news a day - enough to stay in touch. I write, get my work done, and help my kids with school. In general, I’m doing everything I can to stay grounded. You’re lucky I picked up the phone. How about you?”

I told him that he was lucky that I decided to call in the first place. I’m doing the same - except that I’m playing with my dogs and not kids. I refuse to get on the crazy carousel that most folks are riding right now.

I don’t think we saved the world, but we are saving ourselves and each other.

In this crazy plugged in and agenda-driven world, make sure that you plug into the simple joys of life. It’s good for you.

Why Mastery Equals Motivation

Why Mastery Equals Motivation

Motivation is a magical feeling - until you can’t find it when you need it. But in good times or troubled, there is a simple trick you can use to get more motivated.

It’s called Mastery.

Mastery is a purposeful effort to master a skill at a high level. Doing so requires a decision, focus, determination, and lots of practice.

Once you get started on your mastery journey, you will find yourself distracted from day-to-day. You will focus on your outcome. And as you get close to completion, more motivated.

The motivation that comes from Mastery is a direct result of an increase in self-confidence, breaking through obstacles, and getting excited about the future you are creating.

If you are finding yourself not able to power through life, master a new skill. You'll get the motivation to handle anything.

Take a Leap of Faith

I wanted to revisit what Steve Harvey said that inspires me.

If you have seen his teaching on the one thing you must-do if you want to be successful, you know that he says, "You must jump.

If you want to be successful, you must jump into your dreams, take a leap of faith, and go for it."

Many times we stand on the cliff of life and watch others enjoying the life you desire.

They jumped, their parachute opened, and life is good.

You must jump.

When you finally decide to jump, your parachute will not open right away. You will get bumped and bruised, but, your parachute will open.

You must jump.

If you don't jump, your parachute will never open.

Is today the day you jump?

Moment of Change

A few months ago I wrote the words -

Someday soon, a life event will rock your world.

A trusted friend will disappoint you. Your boss may deny the raise you deserve. A loved one may get sick. A pandemic may strike.

Nothing is by chance.

Most life rocking events have been heading your way for a long time.

They can leave you shattered. They can also open up an opportunity for a life-changing course correction.

What are your dreams?  What have you been waiting to do? What’s been holding you back?

A portal for you to step into your dreams has been opened.  Hurry and step through!

When everything changes, it’s a good time to make a few changes for yourself. Get moving while nobody is watching.

Change Yourself. Change Everything Else.

Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.

The Great Pandemic Pause, most folks are finding themselves in a simpler world.

With a few exceptions, everything is slower. There seems to be more time in the day. The rush of what used to be our day-to-day seems distant.

Is that such a bad thing?

When the storm passes, before we reignite our lives, why not consider lessons from a few smart people of the past.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." ~ Leonardo da Vinci

"Life is simple, but we insist on making it complicated." ~ Confucius

"The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook." ~ William James

"Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough." ~ Charles Warner

I like it simple. Simple works.
