S3E6: Knit All The Things

Welcome to Mastering the Knits with Natalie and Alicia, inspiring each other to go outside our comfort zones to master our crafts.  Our goal is to connect, inspire,  and encourage each other as we take on the Master Knitter Program. We also want to build a community and connect with other fiber artists and those taking the Master Knitter journey!

I’ve enjoyed this podcast from start to finish, listening while I knit. It’s so very encouraging and engaging, and I had no idea about the Master Knitter’s certificate, so it’s educational as well. Look forward to more, Natalie!

Master Status (2:21): Alicia is all caught up. She knit swatches 1-6. Natalie finished swatch 6. Alicia and Natalie   Master Plan:(4:52) Natalie and Lish are going to work on the decrease swatches 7 and 8 and block swatches 1-6. The girls discuss their favorite wool soaks. They plan on beginning their research for the blocking report.    In our hands: (9:42) Alicia cast on an American Girl Doll Empire Waist Dress by Elaine Phillips with Patons Beehive Baby Sport. Natalie cast on a Sockhead hat byKelly McClurein Unique Sheep Verve in the Insecta Gradiance colorway. She Cast on 8 more stitches than the pattern calls for to make it a bit bigger.   Dropped stitches:(17:57) Natalie literally dropped a stitch when working on her 50 rows shawlette and had to used a crochet needle to pick it up.     Master Pieces:(18:58) Alicia finally finished herBlank CanvasbyYsolda Teaguewith Malabrigo Arroyo in a Prussia Blue colorway. She discusses having difficulty picking up the stitches from the bind off.  She also finished a basic hat using up some of her Vanna’s Choice acrylic stash.  Natalie finishedLala’s Simple Shawlby Laura Linneman aka Lala of the Knitgirlls video podcast in some of her older handspun from Romeldale pin drafted roving from Ozark Carding Mill, LLC.   She knit three simple preemie hats used well marinated stash yarn, Lorna Laces Sport in the Cubs colorway.  She used this yarn for thesocksshe knit during the week of her wedding. She knit these hats for the charity drive for the Rays Stitch n Pitch which is on June 8th.  They are donating them toAll Children’s Hospital in St. Pete. She also finished the  50 Rows Shawlette by Susan B Anderson in Ella Rae Lace Merino Worsted in purple colorway and then a pink/red colorway. The girls also decided a choking characteristic is not something they want in their hand knits. She also finished spinning Bellatrix yarn from the SW Merino in a red and black coloryway by Abstract Fiber Arts and will be gifting for Jessie TinyAnt.    Future Stitches (40:58): Natalie wants to knit the swatches of the spinning swatches she completed from the black corriedale fleece she bought at SAFF in 2010.  This is for the SPAKAL with the knitmore girls and also Tour de Fleece withTeam Sasquatch. Natalie  explainsTour de Fleece. Alicia decided she is going to knit the Swivel Pullover by Kerri Blumer published in Interweave Knits Winter 2014. She is going to knit it withDebbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in Emerald Green. She also discusses an important friendship and offered to knit theChocolate Passion- Jacket with Cables in Alaskaby DROPS design for one of her first friends from Bowling Green, Kelly. Natalie will be knitting at the Tampa Bay Rays Stitch n Pitch on June 8th at Tropicana Field in St. Pete.  Simply Selfie:(52:00) Alicia met a big deadline and it’s been a huge sigh of relief. Alicia and Jeremy are in the process of moving their shop, Main Street Gallery. Her mom is giving her some wedding planning pressure and kicked the planning into high gear. She also has been enjoying her nephew’s T-Ball games. Natalie talks about her trip with Kenny to Sebring! She had a lovely mother’s day weekend.  She had a trip to Joann’s, the beach,  and a steak dinner. She took the girls to Disney on ice and she is preparing for the onslaught of people coming next week. She discusses having difficulty picking up the stitches from the bind off.  She also finished a basic hat using up some of her Vanna’s Choice acrylic stash. Natalie finished<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/barknknit/lalas-simple-shawl-2" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lala’s Simple Shawl</a>by Laura Linneman aka Lala of the Knitgirlls video podcast in some of her older handspun from Romeldale pin drafted roving from Ozark Carding Mill, LLC.   She knit three simple preemie hats used well marinated stash yarn, Lorna Laces Sport in the Cubs colorway.  She used this yarn for the<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/barknknit/tickled-pink-socks" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">socks</a>she knit during the week of her wedding. She knit these hats for the charity drive for the Rays Stitch n Pitch which is on June 8th.  They are donating them to<a href="http://www.allkids.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">All Children’s Hospital in St. Pete</a>. She also finished the  50 Rows Shawlette by Susan B Anderson in Ella Rae Lace Merino Worsted in purple colorway and then a pink/red colorway. The girls also decided a choking characteristic is not something they want in their hand knits. She also finished spinning Bellatrix yarn from the SW Merino in a red and black coloryway by Abstract Fiber Arts and will be gifting for Jessie TinyAnt. She used the ribbing technique talked about last week to make sure to tighten yarn between stitches in the moss stitch swatch. She started working on the swatch sheets to put in the binder. Alicia worked on swatch #1. She noticed she still needs work on selvedge ends as well as practice tighten second stitch. I was around 1, my sisters were 4 1/2 and 5 1/2. They ran into the house and told mom “there is a bear outside”. Of course, she asked where I was! Yep, they left me outside with the “bear”. We adopted the bear, named him Snoopy and he was the BEST dog ever. We suspect he was a black lab mix. We lived on a farm when he found us, so he full adapted to the country living. My grandma would share how she watched us following dad around the farm. The line of people would be dad, my oldest sister, next sister, next sister, a space………..me, followed by Snoopy. Lish wants the skills to sink into our brains!  Natalie has had to cast on 3 times and discusses what she observed in her knitting. The girls have a new school year starting. She is prepping for her surgery. Kenny landed a new job and  she discusses the new family schedule. S3E5: Autumnal is done!

Natalie’s students knit socks!   Master Status (2:40): Holidays are practically here! We have decided to put our program on hold until after Christmas to focus on family, travel, and gift knitting!    In our hands (3:28): Natalie is working on the Hitofude Cardigan by Hiroko Fukatsu inThe Fiber Seed Sprout Solids. She is also knitting Bell, the Garden Elf by Ala Ela. She is making a kindness elf, sort of Elf on a Shelf but more along the lines of the Magic Elf. Alicia caught the sock bug. She has another pair of socks on the needles. She is using the Sock Recipe: A good, plain sock by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and using Knit Picks Stroll in the colorway Aloha Multi. She is also knitting Knit Hat for Anyone! by Kathy North in Cascade 220 for a childhood friend.    Dropped stitches (13:33): Alicia had to rip!!! Not because the pattern wasn’t clear, just because her brain wasn’t on and she took on too many commission knits! She will continue on the Fontainebleau Lace Scarf by Joan Hughes knit withSeed Lace fromThe Fiber Seed when she has a little less on her plate.    Master Pieces (16:18): Alicia finished up Knit Hat for Anyone! by Kathy Northwith Chocolate Lion Brand Wool-Ease and Vanna’s Choice oatmeal stripes. She also finished up an arm knit infinity scarf in Billowby Knit Picksin Ash Colorway. Lish shares her experience using Billow. She also finished her last Punkin Hat by Tara Thomsenfor the season! She was nervous but  got very good feedback from all the students. She is looking forward to teaching more in the new year!    Simply Selfie (29:13): Alicia shares about being in her cousin’s wedding. Her friend, Taylor, asked her to be in her wedding. She is applying for an Ohio school counselor license.  Natalie is battling being sick with her family with the changing weather. She went to the HorsePower Farm festival with the girls and hubby. They rode ponies, trains, went to the pumpkin patch, and got their faces painted.  The weekends have been filled with lots of family time. They had a shuffleboard party at her sister’s home.    On the Road (39:00):  Alicia had the opportunity to go to theHomespun Christmas Tour located in Columbiana, Leetonia, Washingtonville, Lisbon, Salem, New Waterford, OH. Her friend Stacey, freshH20purls, did not realize the adventure they were getting themselves into. Alicia shares her experiences with the adventure. There were 10 stops on the trip and you were to have your brochure stamped at every stop to enter the prize basket at the end. Some of the great stops along the way included Acorn Acres Alpaca Farm. Amazing farm. They explained a little bit why they got into raising Alpacas and Fiber Animals vs. Show Animals. We checked out Candle shops, sewing shops, and the All Good Things Natural Market. Natalie’s latest finished Hitofude Cardigan   This week’s segments include Master Plan,  Masterpieces, In Our Hands, Future Stitches, Study Hall, Simply Selfie, Raise your hand, Happy Tails, and Comfort Zone.   Master Plan: (1:22)  Alicia and Natalie discuss how they are going to get re-motivated to take on the Master Knitter Program Level 1. Natalie plans to knit swatch 9 and 10, start questions, and organize binder.  Natalie’s plan is to schedule Monday and Wednesday nights as Level 1 work nights. She was inspired from the By the Fibreside Podcast.  Alicia is going to set aside time each week to dedicate to program. She is going to work on program at a minimum of 3 hours per week. She is going to be flexible on the days she works on it. WIth every hour she  will earn a point. Each point will equal $1 for a  sock yarn fund!
