The fellas were asked to podcast a the Long Island Library Resource Council’s 31st annual Conference on Libraries and the Future.  There were many great speakers and the podcast had an opportunity to speak with Dr. James Neal who spoke to Chris about the nature of leadership and how it is defined along with the concept “you can’t count the apple from its seeds”, whether leadership is a science or art, how important the informal leadership is to the formal organizational chart and even delves into good chaos within an organization because it will develop innovation.   @jamesneal on Twitter After a short break Chris speaks with Syntychia Kendrick-Samuel, the Assistant Director of the Uniondale Public Library.  This is Syntchia’s 4th appearance on the podcast and she talks about collaboration at various levels between libraries, how at the end of the day the “buck stops” at the directors desk both from the community and the board, and we have a great discussion about Dr. James Neal’s leadership types.  Syntychia also advocates for teen services to continue to evolve into departments separate from a youth services climate and thinks EVERY LIBRARY should have a gardening program!! @sobenyree on Twitter

Emily Ostrander talks about growing up at Emma as a patron (including riding her bike there as a kid), knowing at 16 that she wanted to be a librarian, and her feelings on customer service which includes the attitude you portray will be what you receive from the patron. Emily will also share what it is like working in adults vs working with teens, the pandemic pivot (which includes failing forward) and making that transition from a “brick and mortar” model to a model to reach outside the building. For our U.S. friends, it is similar to Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.  Anna talks about taking these oral histories and integrating them with Alexa, Google Home and other voice operated devices with the help of Alkira. Here in Part 2, we continue the conversation with Dr. Lambert Shell, Stacey Smith-Brown, Kaysha Watson-Phillips, Carol Gilliam, Michelle Samuel, Salamah Mullen and my “on the spot” co-host for the day Syntychia Kendrick-Samuel. Here is Suffolk County, New York, we have the Suffolk Cooperative Libray System which provides many services for the member libraries of the county.  We were fortunate enough to have Derek Ivie and Darla Salva Cruz visit the podcast.  Derek &amp; Darla, as they are more affectionately known, provide services to children and teen departments for libraries of Suffolk.  One of the biggest events that they coordinate is Battle of the Books which is an amazing competition centered around a group of books. Chris and Bob take the show on the road and visit with the awesome librarians at the Uniondale Public Library in Uniondale, New York.  We spoke with Syntychia Kendrick-Samuel &amp; Amanda Borgia from the Teen Department, Michelle Minervini, Deborah Kinirons &amp; James Grzybowski from Children’s, Valerie French &amp; Robert Weissfrom the Adult Department.     We covered a lot of ground.  Uniondale is doing a lot of great things. In this episode, Chris and Bob were joined by Matt Pfisterer, the Director of the Middletown Thrall Library in Middletown, New York which is in the heart of the beautiful Catskill Mountains.  Matt, originally from Long Island, spoke about transplanting to Middletown, briefly compared the various consortiums around New York State and talked about how important it is to continually lobby and meet with our representatives in New York State government to guarantee another year of state financial support.  Matt also spoke about the Lifesaving Librarians Act that Representative Sean Patrick Moloney sponsored in Congress, which would provide naloxone, commonly known as Narcan along with training to libraries free of charge.  With the opioid crisis, libraries are on the front lines and should be armed with this life saving medication.  Matt’s library was featured in the New York Times talking about the Lifesaving Librarians Act, shedding light on the crisis and what libraries can do to help. www.thrall.org
