Bryan Miles on A Better Way To Build Staff Culture

On the way home from his flag football game last night, my (Matt) son, Will, asked what he could work on to get better before his next game.  Will is nine years old. This season is the fourth time that he's played flag football and after every game, we talk about how his team played and what he did to positively contribute to his team. I've never treated him like he's gonna be a five-star recruit playing on Saturdays in the SEC. He makes mistakes, but he's a little kid, so my feedback has always been positive. But he asked the question, so we talked about running hard on toss-sweeps as a running back and the importance of eye control when he's playing cornerback on defense. And when we are at practice on Saturdays, I'll remind him to work on those things. I love Will's ambition. He knows he did some things well. He knows that he has areas where he can improve. I don't know how the rest of the season will go for him, but his desire to make the most out of his opportunity is inspiring. Do you have that kind of ambition? More specifically, do you do your work with a desire to bring glory to God? If the temptation as we age is to give up on ambition, the temptation in our younger days is to focus our aim upon ourselves. Benefits of Better Smartphone Use:  Heightened sense of security and gratitude. Research shows that smartphone use increases the risk of loneliness and depression. Mentally healthy leaders limit the time they spend on their phone. Improved sleep. Your phone emits a level of radiation that disrupts the quality of your sleep. Physically healthy leaders keep their phone in another room at night. Better connections in relationships. Our relationships are damaged by decreased eye contact as we scroll our phones. Relationally healthy leaders set boundaries on their phones when they’re spending time with people. Better able to hear God. Your phone creates untold number of distractions from time you spend listening to God through the Scriptures and responding in prayer. Spiritually healthy leaders consider the cost of using your phone to fuel your relationship with God. More productive at work. They are also able to  understand and articulate the feelings of other people.     The limitations of sympathy. In an attempt to establish connection, a leader might sympathize with someone by sharing their own story. While helpful in letting someone know they’re not alone,  sympathy robs someone of an opportunity to be understood and accepted.   Empathy can be developed. If you are not naturally empathetic,  a willingness to grow and a simple development plan can do wonders. And if empathy is intuitive for you, continue to work at not only mastering this critical skill but pass on what you have learned to others. How To Get The Most From Your Smartphone

Resilience

Some leaders have a high level of natural, God-given, intuitive, emotional intelligence. They know how they feel and they understand how others feel. They can build connections based on those feelings, and everyone is the better for it. I (Matt) did not receive that particular gift under the leadership Christmas tree. I went to school for more than 20 years, and nobody told me that emotional intelligence was more important than 10th-grade geometry. Talking about feelings wasn’t something that happened in my house growing up. I’m not angry about it. I don’t blame anyone. But I have to admit that paying attention and prioritizing emotions was not on my radar for a long time as a leader. And the odds are that they may not be that big of a priority for you either. And our failure to prioritize emotions - ours and those we lead - and a lack of development if emotional intelligence does not come naturally is costly. I would estimate that 80% of the interpersonal conflict that I have encountered as a leader is because someone was hurt because they didn’t feel heard or understood. Think about that. Most of the problems that exist in our relationships come down to feelings, not facts. We can talk about ‘speaking truth in love’ ‘til the cows come home, but without emotional intelligence, people won’t believe we love them. If you struggle to name your feelings or create problems for yourself as a leader by not prioritizing the feelings of others, this podcast episode will help you. Those distractions make it difficult to  gain clarity about what's going on inside of your head and heart. There is a genuine and present stress on the marriages of leaders. Friends and Family - Don't Discount Your Relationships

Brief Overview Pastoral The needs of the people we serve rarely fit easily inside of a tightly wound schedule. There is a level of flexibility that we must maintain in order to be with our people where they are, yet if we’re not careful we will find ourselves only doing surface-level work with little time and energy to focus on our best work. On this episode, we help you find the right strategy to focus on your most significant work and maintain accessibility to your church.   Big Ideas:    Distracted work is disappointing work. When you are distracted the quality of your work suffers. You were not made to multitask and focus deeply on your work. And while everything you do does not require a significant level of focus, eliminate distractions when you need to do deep work.   Different people need different strategies. Schedule deep work in hourlong, half-day or full-day installments. Use another account on your computer. Create a work environment that helps you focus and avoid distractions.   Great work manages distractions. Pay attention to the times of day and type of work when you feel frustrated by distractions. Use the ideas in this resource to develop and execute on a simple action plan. Don’t try to create the perfect plan - just take the next step and give yourself permission to make progress!
