We revisit one our favorites from five years ago and see if it holds up. We play a game that just made us go, Wow, this is fun, where has it been all our lives. Marty then reminds me that I am old and my vision is not what it used to be and gives me models to put together and that was an experience. But the highlight reviews of Iberian Gauge and Kokopelli are about two games that we both really like. Iberian Gauge is a train gauge. It is an economic game. So it had us there. Kokopelli is about changing rules during the game and trying to out maneuver your opponent with card play. Thanks for taking the time to listen and hope you enjoy some of our deep insights into these games. Okay, that might have been a stretch The post RDTN Episode 238: Iberian Gauge, Kokopelli, Fireteam, Meadow, Dimension, The Loop, Zombie Princess, Tyrants of the Underdark, Kim Joy’s Magic Bakery first appeared on Rolling Dice & Taking Names.

We get to hear about the plans for Portal over the coming months. It is one of those debates of “How can you not really enjoy this?” Or, “You liked this, then you got to like that.” Sometimes the games we play do cause us to have differing opinions and not about rather if game is good or not, but about our own personal tastes in what we like about games. There is no doubt that the game is solid, but it is fun to see our different reactions and opinions. It is like we were not evening sitting at the same table when playing. But that happens and that is fine. Thank goodness there are opportunities to play it again. Be sure to pay attention to the Miniature Market spot for a contest announcement, we kind of slipped that one in there. Therefore, we had lots of news to share and our opinions on said news. We did start off with a game to get you hooked, but then did a Taste Test which included two of our favorite things, Mountain Dew and Moon Pies. If you like Pineapple and Lemon, then you might need to find yourself these two items and give them a try. Some very good games covered in the show. The Power Rangers Deck Builder takes the basic core concept of deck building and adds to it by bringing in attachments and allies to your heroes/villains which helps you cull your deck but also makes for some important strategic decisions while playing. Juicy Fruits has a puzzle element in the game that makes it a strong solo challenge that you will be concentrating on while others take their turns. I think this is what needs to be pointed out, while there is competition to get the buildings on the main board, other players are not going to mess you up and keep you from getting resources. You will do that to yourself if you don’t plan well but also need to keep track of what others are doing. Finally we get to the hit of the show: Subastral. If you played Stellar and enjoyed it, then this is going to be a no brainer for you. There is something satisfying to me about this game in how it challenges you to decide when to take cards into your hand, when to play them to your board and how to strategize on how to deny others from getting cards. Pinchback and Riddle have really built on this mechanic of playing to a certain area which dictates what you do next. Wonder if they have something else in the works? Does the rework and additions make it worthy of replacing your old copy? If you don’t have the First Edition, should you get this edition? Hopefully we will answer those questions so you can make an informed decision. We also played a very light family style racing game called Greece Lightning. This is a fast playing, dice rolling game that in my opinion never will stay on the table too long. You can easily get two plays done in under an hour. Heck, if the dice are rolling good, you could get two plays in within 30 minutes. Vanessa joins Marty to discuss the next expansion to Arkham Horror without giving away spoilers. They discuss some key additions that you will find in this expansion. But did they like it? Please, it is Arkham Horror, what do you think? The post RDTN Episode 233: Gravwell 2nd Edition, AH: Secrets of the Order, Greece Lightning first appeared on Rolling Dice & Taking Names.

Our buddy Ben has put together an image of various bits from games and it is your task to see how many you know. Complete the form here for your submission. The person with the most correct answers wins, ties will be resolved by random draw. We wish you luck with the contest. As far as games we got to the table, Brew is a dice placement game that doesn’t punish for unfortunate rolls, but does require some advance planning to get the most out of the results. But gaining control of the various forests will be the hidden strategy piece to this game that will take time for players to develop. For What Remains in a non-miniature tactical skirmish game where streamlined rules and powers provide an enjoyable experience. The well written rulebooks and mission books add to the enjoyment and easy access for players. City Builder is a tile laying game that made me feel like I never had enough time, but yet, those I was playing against had plenty. Very nice twist to a tile laying game for those that enjoy that mechanic. Also, be sure and visit Sir Meeple for you new RDTN shirts if you are so inclined. The post RDTN Episode 232: Brew, City Builder, For What Remains, Ticket To Ride 15th Anniversary, Million Dollar Script first appeared on Rolling Dice & Taking Names.

Imperium is a classic style of deck building with a strong engine building mechanic. In the games played, there was strong interaction and then there was solitary play. It all depends on the factions that are on the table. Mandala Stones is going to be a favorite light game for the table. However, there are some strategic moments in the game that you will need to consider to come out on top. Mazescape is a simple game that will be a hit or miss if you like the solo style games. At first, you might dismiss it, but if you like clever puzzle games, then it might be one to try. If you like games where you have to write on a pad of paper, definitely check out Doodle Dungeon. Lots of interaction and just a simple pleasure to get on the table. Thanks for listening and all the Dad Jokes that were submitted. See you in two weeks. The post RDTN Episode 231: Mandala Stones, Imperium, Mazescape, Unfathomable, Flesh & Blood first appeared on Rolling Dice & Taking Names.

Egyptians is the newest expansion and it feels different from all the rest. I also enjoy it when an expansion just flows and both these factions seemed to be easy to play to us. The engine you needed to build was right there and easy to grasp. If you enjoy Empires of the North, then this might be a must add Two players games that involve strategic war battles are always something I enjoy, but the time to set up and play is sometimes a roadblock to getting a game to the table. But 300: Earth & Water is small footprint game that is fast to play and easy to understand. Based on the battle that most of us know from the movie 300, this game is around can the Greeks hold off the advance of the Persians over five rounds. If they do, they win. If the Persians can beat down the defenses, then they win.
