MBS314 - Herminia Ibarra Act Like a Leader Think Like a Leader

Matt Brown Show

In this episode, Matt is joined by Herminia Ibarra who is an organizational behavior professor at London Business School. She is also the author of Act Like A Leader, Think Like A Leader.Ibarra turns the usual “think first and then act” philosophy on its head by arguing that doing these three things will help you learn through action and will increase what she calls your outsight—the valuable external perspective you gain from direct experiences and experimentation. As opposed to insight, outsight will then help change the way you think as a leader: about what kind of work is important; how you should invest your time; why and which relationships matter in informing and supporting your leadership; and, ultimately, who you want to become.Packed with self-assessments and practical advice to help define your most pressing leadership challenges, this episode will help you devise a plan of action to become a better leader and move your career to the next level. It’s time to learn by doing.

Thought Sparks with Rita McGrath and Herminia Ibarra

Thought Sparks

Herminia Ibarra just recently published a super-timely Harvard Business review article on the topic of "leader as coach", in which she explores the skills that are so sorely needed to create higher levels of organizational capability.  Most of the executives she works with, unfortunately, think they are much better coaches than they actually are!  In this far-ranging #FridayFiresideChat, she and I reflect on how the concept of leadership has evolved, what we need to know now and how her book "Act Like a Leader:  Think Like a Leader" has moved individuals forward.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thoughtsparksritamcgrath/message

Play to Potential Podcast

GUEST Herminia Ibarra is the Charles Handy Professor of Organizational Behaviour at London Business School (LBS). Prior to joining LBS, she served on the INSEAD and Harvard Business School faculties. She is the author of the best selling, Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader and Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing your Career. She writes for HBR and business publications such as Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and New York Times.  In our conversation, we unpack the nuance behind Herminia’s belief “Adults are more likely to act their way into a new way of thinking than think their way into a new way of acting”. We talk about how leaders in transition could experiment with different pathways and think about a portfolio versus a full-time role. We also get to the bottom of the catch-22 that a several professionals encounter especially in identity consuming time greedy careers such as Management Consulting, Investment Banking, Private Equity, Law and related professions. We also speak about avoiding the risk of foreclosure while evaluating options and discuss the role of the near and dear around us in helping us get to a new orbit.  This conversation is likely to be of value to people who are at cross roads or people who are in successful careers but feel an increasing dissonance grow inside them. Ep 84. Herminia Ibarra: Act Like a Leader

Work and Life with Stew Friedman

Herminia Ibarra is the Charles Handy Professor of Organizational Behavior at London Business School. Before that she was on the faculty at INSEAD and the Harvard Business School. She is a judge for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network, and recognized by Thinkers 50 among the most influential management thinkers in the world. Her book Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader explains how to step up to a bigger leadership role. Her best-selling Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career describes how people reinvent their careers. Ibarra, who received her M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University, where she was a National Science Fellow, is a master educator and world-renowned scholar whose advice is sought by many organizations. Stew and Herminia, who go way back to grad school days, discuss the essentials in Act Like a Leader and the many ways one can cultivate and use a broad and diverse network to enhance one’s career. Ibarra contrasts this with what she calls the tendency many of us have to be narcissistic and lazy when it comes to growing the ongoing social support everyone needs to succeed as a leader. They talk about practical matters, like how to make bite- sized requests commensurate with the status of the relationship and how to expand your network outside of your immediate circle -- even if it’s uncomfortable to do so.
