My co-host, Bryan, and I got to catch up with Meb and dive into what makes him, well, Meb! Consistency, preparation and intention are words that can easily define Meb and how he approached his craft as a runner everyday. But it was how he framed these elements that led to sustained excellence for twenty years. Episode 2 - Meb Keflezighi, Marathoner & 4-time Olympian

Grounded with Dinée Dorame

“Running takes you to places no other thing can. Sometimes cars and tourists can come see it, but with running you can be on a path or in other areas with dirt…you get to see a lot of great things.” Meb Keflegizhi is a four-time Olympian and 2004 Silver Medalist in the marathon– a race distance he’s conquered 26 times (if you haven’t yet checked out his book 26 Marathons, I highly recommend it). Meb is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon and an Olympic Medal. He was originally born in Eritrea before his family escaped a dangerous, war-torn situation and came to the U.S. In this episode, he reflects on his perception of his own identity and self during that time, how he has found and cultivated community over the years, how diversity impacted his college decision making process, and how he understood his cultural roots while being so far removed from his homelands. A special two conversation episode with legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor and marathon winner Meb Keflezighi on Being American

Being American with Deval Patrick

In the wake of insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Deval shares his conversations with Meb Keflezighi, the Eritrean-born American long distance runner who won the 2014 Boston Marathon, and the legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor. The talks range from their individual upbringings with personal struggles and successes, to finding hope in difficult times — whether it’s a bombing at the finish line, lynchings on our streets or extremist violence in Washington D.C. How do we find light in the darkness? How do we tell America’s stories accurately, with all of its blemishes, and how do we live up to our ideals?

In addition, they discuss how as former professional athletes, they now have the opportunity to reflect and open up a bit more about the human and emotional elements of marathon running beyond the physical training.
