Today:  Let’s Talk Bag Guns and Pistol Caliber Carbines (PCCs).  They are becoming more and more popular as time goes on and the guns are just getting better and better.  I really want one to make my bag gun that goes with me everywhere.

This episode we look at why a pistol caliber and what a bag gun would be used for.  What’s the ups and down of using a pistol caliber over a rifle caliber? What to look for In a bag gun?  And what gun am I looking at.

Including are three reviews of guns I’m thinking of making my bag gun: CZ Scorpion Evo 3, Ruger PPC Carbine, and Sig MPX.  All have great things about them and things that could be improved.

Outline:

Definitions:

  • Pistol Caliber Carbines PCC
  • Small PCCs
  • For Self Defense

Range Trip!

Advantages of PPC over a Rifle

  • Lighter and Smaller
  • Ammo is Cheaper
  • Not as loud
  • Same caliber as your handgun
  • Maybe same mags as your handgun

Down Sides

  • It’s not a rifle
  • Limited Range
  • Heavier Ammo
  • The PCC is still being perfected

Why I want one:

  • Bag Gun to carry with me places
  • Same ammo and hopefully same mags as my carry gun
  • Smaller Barrel and not as much noise
  • Control out of the smaller gun
  • Accuracy at ranges over the handgun

The Contenders right now:

CZ Scorpion

  • Good
    • Price
    • Shooting was fun
    • Magazines are cheaper then most (except Glock mags)
    • Balance and Fell is really good
    • Magpul Stuff
  • Bad
    • Trigger sucks
    • Not as many htings for them as I would like aftermarket
    • Accuracy was hard with the heavy trigger
    • Optic and sites offset is different then AR so options aren’t as good

Ruger PCC

  • Good
    • Price is by far the cheapeast
    • Uses Ruger or Glock magazines
    • Runs like a 10/22
    • 16” Barrel
    • Been Doing it for a long time
  • Bad
    • Breaks down for storage
    • Not a lot of aftermarket stuff
    • 16” barrel
    • Sites and optics not co witnessed
    • Weird Recoil Impulse

Sig MPX

  • Good
    • Handles like an AR
    • Optics like an AR
    • Endless AR Stuff
    • Nicest Trigger by Far
    • Felt like an AR Trigger and Recoil Impulse
    • Extendable Brace
  • Bad
    • Expensive
    • Mags are Expensive
    • Proprietary parts inside that look like standard AR
    • Folding Brace
    • Did I say Expensive

I learned a bunch of things that can be applied to your self defense when I was almost killed three times.

I was in the think of the fighting in the Iraqi invasion during 2003 as Marine Infantry.  The tip of the spear.

Couple previews:  You will do what you physically practice doing when in a fight.  You can never be overprepared or too good for when someone is trying to kill you or your family.  Always try to beat any standards you are given.  Once you can do that, start beating your own time, and just keep getting better.  There will always be an “oh shit” factor that takes you a second to recover from.  The more situations you are in the less it is there, but it never goes away.  Except it, and see yourself pushing through it.

Is it always a good idea to be armed?  Is there a time when you would go unarmed?  Why I chose to go to Las Vegas and not take a gun with me.

My default is to always have a gun.  But sometimes it’s smarted to leave the gun at home.  This trip for a plethora of reasons I decided to leave all my guns at home.  Should you do the same?  Was I wrong?  Was I right?  What do you think?

Today: Let’s talk about the CZ Scorpion Evo and shooting it at a carbine competition.  The competition is loosely based on IDPA rules and stages.  It was a lot of fun.

This gun is about the closest thing you can get to a true sub machine gun legally.  It folds up, so I can stick it in a backpack (the bag gun), and unfold it and shoot it like a rifle even-though legally it’s a pistol.

The more I shoot the CZ the more I like it.  I think I might have to get one and turn it into my bag gun.

Today:  Today is a Truck Talk Tuesday (TTT).  Just you and me on a long drive sitting in the truck talking about guns and self defense.

Can you do something and should you do something are very different questions.  We need to understand the difference.

On Can/Could do something: Legally and Physically.  You need to know both.

On Should comes the moral and ethical part that will make you question yourself during a conflict.  Now is the time to answer that question.

I’m not going to “Should” on you, but you should answer that question for yourself in as many situations as you can think of.  Then discuss the ones you aren’t sure about.

I’m going through one right now in my mind that I mention on the podcast.  Here’s a link to the video about the one I’m trying to determine my should.

Today: Firearms safety is always the most fun you could ever talk about, right?  Sarcasm implied there.

No one really wants to talk about firearms safety.  We all just want it magically to happen to us and everyone around us.  But, like everything else in life it takes work.

What can you do if someone around you is being unsafe with a firearm?

Announcements

OUTLINE:

Story that inspired this episode:

The last class I took, we were sitting around a big conference table as the instructor gave the safety briefing. Immediately after the safety briefing, as we were getting ready to go into the range, the idiot across the table from me takes his Glock out of his range bag and racks the slide, AND I’M LOOKING DOWN THE MUZZLE.   I told him that if he pointed his gun at me again, that he and I were going to have a serious problem. I thought he should have been kicked out of the class, but the instructor just told him to be more careful.  This was no more than 30 seconds after the safety briefing. Needless to say I never felt safe for the rest of that class.

Anyway, keep up the good work Ben.

Stay safe,

Addressing Firearms Safety:

Problems for instructors in class:

  • Everyone has to have the gun on right now
  • Can’t sit still, like a bunch of kids at Christmas
  • Target focus on getting started and here Charlie Brown’s teacher

Couple Issues from the past:

  • Training a guy at the armored car company and kicked him for pointing a gun at me
  • Soldier pointing a rifle at me in the chow hall overseas
  • Shotgun pointed at me at a gun shop
  • Shooting Steel with a rifle at 50 yards and having someone ask me about it

Solutions?

  • Culture of Safety from Paul Lathrop of The Polite Society Podcast
  • Firm, Quick, and Polite… they are holding a gun with the appropriate reaction
  • See Something Say Something
  • Talk to the instructor for more clarification on things
  • I’ve bee too close to some horrible incidents that it makes me Paranoid
    • 1999 Police Academy instructor shot a cadet while demoing firearms disarms
    • 2002 Marine killed during blank-fire exercise in MOUT town
    • Multiple Police cover-ups on neglect discharges
    • Military uses empty rifles and guns all the time and doesn’t police safety 24/7
  • Safety Violations are a huge leadership challenge
    • Loaded weapons involved
    • Egos the size of building (more people more ego)
    • Lack of Knowledge
    • Lack of trust
    • Lots of people around
  • Tips:
    • Take ownership of everything including what the other person is doing. What can you do to make it better?
    • Praise in Public, Criticize in Private
    • Ask if you can help
    • Be able to explain yourself emotionally and logically
    • Ask Questions… with actual curiosity
    • Play to their egos
    • Get help from range staff or others
    • Leave
  • Huge Leadership Challenge
    • Takes practice
    • Will do it well and badly
    • If we all work at it we can all get better
    • We could all be a little more paranoid about firearms safety
    • We could all improve

Handle your weapon every time like the instructor you admire the most is watching and like your kids are watching and how you want them to do it.

Today:  Having a security mindset can keep you safe before you have to use any other self defense technique.  Setting up your life so you don’t have an actual confrontation that puts you, your family, or your home in jeopardy is the best way to defend yourself.

We discuss the different security mindsets from Law Enforcement, Military, Civilian, and a Security Professional’s point of view.  You make think they are the same, but they are very different.  Thinking one is the way to go may not help you.  Pick your source of information carefully.  I used security professional as a term because if I put security guard it has a negative bias to it.  But you would be surprised what a security guard knows about security that other professions don’t see.  As always there are crappie ones and great ones.  But you want to security your home, your family, and yourself like a professional security guard would not any other profession.

Podcast Outline:

This is back to basics:

How aware are you?  Check your awareness with a couple of easy questions:

  • When was the last time someone surprised you?
  • Where are the exits where you are right now?
  • If you are traveling, where are you exactly?
  • When was the last time someone bumped into you? Or you into them?

How to Improve your awareness:

  • Simple:
    • 5 – 25 Scans (a way to make sure you are scanning you environment near to far)
    • Look both ways as you exit or enter a place and then scan near to far in an arce around the place
    • Find the exits to anyplace you go to every time you go someplace
    • Talk to someone about awareness, compare notes about things and people around you
  • Advanced:
    • Why are people there?
    • Look ahead and anticipate what people are going to do after you answer why they are there

Rank #18: Podcast 257 Shooting Standards on a TTT

Today:  Today is a Truck Talk Tuesday (TTT).  Just you and me on a long drive sitting in the truck talking about guns and self defense.

This week is a question from a listener about know shooting standards.  Should you care?  I don’t?

Most shooting standard drills suck for self defense.  You start training to the drill and forget what the drill is suppose to teach you.  The only thing drills are good for is to see if you are improving.

You can shoot a drill and then a couple months, or after a class, shoot it again and see if you improved.

The basics I went over are:

  • One Hole Drill
  • Dot Torture Test (here is the Dot Torture Target as promised)
  • Draw to First Shot
  • Move, Draw, Fire an extended Failure Drill
  • Bill Drill and/or 5x5 (here is a 5x5 Target that explains it)
  • Casino Drill (Buy Targets here)

Go listen to the episode for why these are my favorites.

Bonus… The one I think is the most fun is El Presidente.  Not a really good value for self defense, but a lot of fun to set up and shoot again and again.
