Some healthcare workers describe symptoms similar to PTSD: having panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, unable to eat or eating too much, exhaustion, tearful, and reliving the tragedies they have witnessed. There is a name for this, which also brings the good news that it can be relieved. My guest in this important episode is Dr. Cynda Hylton Rushton, the Anne and George L. Bunting Professor of Clinical Ethics at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the School of Nursing, and co-chairs the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Ethics Committee and Consultation Service. Encore Transforming Healthcare: Nurses Required

This is Brian Mohika’s 2nd episode on Once a Nurse. He first appeared on December 30, 2019 to talk about his persistent and committed work as an entrepreneur to invent, sew, market and gain a small foothold in medical equipment with his Cathwear underwear for men and women who wear Foleys, Suprapubic, Biliary, and Nephrostomy catheters. In Nursing, as in life, how we perceive a situation is how we react to it. How we react, creates another reaction from those around us. Our show today considers those people, the staff whistle blowers, the patients and families devastated by them &amp; the incredible difficulty of putting such people in jail for as long as possible. Mr. Sackman lays out the army of people needed to make this happen, including some of the MOST crucial: the nurses who report these people, suffer being ignored, shamed, ostracized for doing so and the Forensic Nurses, whom make the healthcare maze visible to investigators. Building the Future of Women's Health

What is the Chinese curse? May you live in interesting times. I want to touch on one tiny part of the a recent uproar--Gender Equality. There is more to this subject than can be said in an hour. This volatile brew has been stewing for decades if not since the beginning of humans. it has occasionally in history broken through the surface angrily and rolled out like a wave of lava. Some progress seems to occur, then there is a settling and hardening and the process begins all over again. I first experienced the lava flow in the 60's and 70's then the 90's and now in the present. This gender inequality has always been very apparent in nursing, despite the fact that nurses are about 90% women. The lava flow now has to do with the debacle occurring in the international eye on the American Senate Judicial Committee stage during the nomination process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. I am not interested in the specifics of the case as much as the reactions of the genders of observers. Join me.

Nurses in 2020 are in trouble. It appears in the form of bullying, burnout, and leaving the profession. There is a saying that “Life is what happens while you are making other plans.” Since this is true for all of us, we need to learn how to be resilient through whatever comes our way. Some say you “have” it or you don’t. I believe we can learn new habits and tools to make us more resilient. My guests, Lyn McCright and Teresa Walding have created Advancing Holistic Health to prove that point. They developed a program called the Resilience Paradigm, the principles of human psychological functioning, and we will discuss the principles of health behind it. In a world in which humans have become more and more polarized in our views, communication and hearing, healthcare sits right on the middle of the conflicts. Not only do people in healthcare have extreme pressure and choices in their work, but the people in the world holding all of those polarized positions work there. Many people still believe that culture ended with the Civil War. Nothing could be further from the truth. She broke the color barrier in nursing, not only Minnesota, but every state she stepped foot into over the course of her lifetime. Her nephew, Mr McHie, will share her story with us.
