Embracing the Crone & Claiming Her Voice

For years, I looked forward to my 40th birthday. I had visions of being surrounded by family and friends, sharing an “over the hill” cake, and beginning the new decade of my life with laughter. Instead, that was the year my children divorced me and I found myself totally alone. The only celebration was a last minute dinner at a local buffet after my partner got off from a long day of work. I didn’t yet know the full extent of the crumbling and transforming my life was undergoing, I just knew nothing was going to be the same. There was a lot I didn’t have control over but I could at least give myself a direction to head. So, I set a big, hairy, audacious goal that I wanted to reach by the time I turned 45. Next week, I turn 45. Did I make it? That depends on how you look at it. Culturally, women are taught to stay quiet, stay small, stay in a support position rather than lead, and in so many, many ways to abandon ourselves for the sake of others. Giving myself permission to take up space is something I’ve been working on for many years, and yet, I caught myself falling into that old habit yet again.
