How can meetings be designed to achieve useful outcomes? We were joined today by author, Valerie Patrick to discuss her book, When Bad Teams Happen to Good People. Teams are the source of problem-solving and innovation that today’s organizations need to survive and thrive in an increasingly complex and challenging marketplace. Teamwork is hard because there is no magic formula or step-by-step procedure to ensure results. Think of a programmer asked to develop new features for a cell phone: they write new code, test the code, troubleshoot problems encountered, revise the code, and repeat the testing process until the new features work without problems. Similarly, a team leader asked to deliver specified outcomes develops a plan, runs team meetings, troubleshoots problems encountered, revises the plan, and repeats until the team outcomes are achieved. The difference is that a programmer has tools to help streamline troubleshooting, while team leaders do not—until now. Hensley, Ph.D., was appointed president and chief executive officer of the National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®) in 2018. Before his time at NEFE, Hensley served as assistant director for the Ohio College Access Network, and program associate at KnowledgeWorks Foundation in Cincinnati; assistant director of admissions at Hiram College (OH); and as campaign coordinator at Union College (KY). He helped build the number of college access programs in Ohio by designing sustainability plans for communities all across the state. Charles Self is known for his ability to architect an accelerated revenue topline, as well as for his government regulation expertise with financial services organizations.  Chuck's robust career that has been a blend of focused on fixed income investment processes, followed by concentration on sales, marketing and product management of alternative investment strategies. Over the years, he's been recruited by investment management organizations to grow assets under management and upgrade investment strategy and processes. Chuck has created new products for such organizations including SEC-registered and offshore mutual funds, and implemented regulatory compliance procedures.  He chairs the Investment Committee for Governmental Insurance Managers and serves on its Audit Committee. We have that feeling like we want to go outside and play, go to the gym or we might even miss going into the office. What can we do about it? How important is it to stay active right now?  We were joined today by IBJJF World Champion, Professor Pablo Silva and former linebacker for the Houston Texans and Founder of both the Athletic Room and the Regen Room, Kailee Wong. Pablo started his jiu jitsu journey at the age of 14 in his small hometown Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. At age 16, Pablo made the difficult decision of leaving his hometown and his family to train BJJ full time at the Gracie Barra HQ in Belo Horizonte. It was then that Pablo set his goal of becoming a Black Belt World Champion. In 2009, Pablo received his black belt and just one year later achieved his goal of winning the IBJJF World Championship at the Black Belt Adult level. Pablo has won all the major tournaments in the sport of jiu jitsu as a black belt. Pablo is the only IBJJF Adult Black Belt World Champion living and teaching in Texas. The curriculum at Pablo Silva BJJ is geared toward sport jiu jitsu and stems from Pablo’s own competition experiences. Pablo is a firm believer that jiu jitsu can change people’s lives for the better. Whether it’s self-esteem, health, mental, or emotional issues, he believes that jiu jitsu can help everyone in one way or another. We were joined today by Christine Wise, the agency's Chief Strategy Officer to talk about Foresight 2020 - a national representative study on the attitudes and opinions of 2,000 Americans with regard to brands and political stances.      Foresight 2020 research shows that the overwhelming majority of consumers agree on the importance of many core values and see a number of these shared values as “under threat” today. When considering the unprecedented political divisiveness that is so pervasive today, it is no surprise people are hoping for brands to build common ground.   “As we look ahead to what is certain to be a highly-charged political climate in 2020, we saw an opportunity to use data and insights to help marketers and brands create winning strategies for  the year ahead,” explained Alan Brown, CEO and co-founder of DNA. “Just as political candidates are courting independent votes, brands can broaden their relevance to more people by championing common ground than by firmly planting a flag on the side of any single issue or candidate. Staying authentic and doubling down on important shared values may be the best way for brands to add value and bring people together in today’s landmine filled political landscape.”    For starters, our political system and political division is the number one issue facing the country when looking at the combination of what is both important and polarizing.     As people look ahead to 2020, most anticipate things will continue to get worse with only 8% of people disagreeing with the statement that “the election year will further divide and polarize our country.”   “Although there are specific groups of people that will immediately applaud and reward a brand for taking a strong political or societal stance,” explains Christine Wise, Chief Strategy Officer at DNA and leader of the study, “many have a degree of skepticism about  brand activism with 53% agreeing that ‘Too many brands use societal issues as a marketing ploy to sell their product/service.’”   Cultivating unity is the number one thing on a list of what people want from brands with 54% agreeing “Brands should help build common ground and avoid taking sides.”   According to the survey, DNA sees  an opportunity for brands to be the change people want to see by protecting and projecting shared values especially those that are viewed as most important and under threat today. These values include privacy, preserving the environment, safety, fairness, open-mindedness, independence, compassion, and honesty.   Noted Ms. Wise, “We see rich and fertile ground for brands to advocate around our shared values. DNA has analyzed a large range of values and can guide brands to those that are most important and also seen as most under threat in 2020 based on a wide range of factors. Generation cohorts, where people live, and political affiliation reveal both differences and highlight commonalities that provide a framework for how brands can succeed and drive relevance in 2020.”   Personal Issues Remain More Pressing than Political Issues As concerning as the state of politics is for many, only 13% of Americans strongly agree that they’re “losing sleep about what is happening now and what lies ahead in 2020.”  This is in part because personal problems are more pressing and political fatigue has already set in.     Improving physical health and improving personal finances top the list of personal priorities  for 2020 across all generations. Younger generations (Gen Z and Millennials) differ from older generations with additional importance placed on advancing their job/career, improving their personal relationships, trying new things, maintaining a sense of balance, and improving their mental health.   In addition, DNA found that brands should consider how their employees feel - not just what their customers feel - about political advocacy. With a tight talent pool, keeping the entire enterprise in mind is vital for companies as 37% of Americans overall would be proud to be employed by a company that publicly advocated in support of causes or issues I care about.   Research methodology The Foresight for 2020 project is a nationally representative quantitative study of 2,000 Americans, ages 18+. The quantitative survey was fielded in August 2019.  The study examines the current state of American sentiment, the values we hold most dear and those we feel are under threat today, how we perceive the issues of the day, and what we see as the role/responsibility of brands during this unique moment in time. Wade Pfau discusses his new book - Safety-First Retirement Planning: An Integrated Approach for a Worry-Free Retirement.   We were joined today by bestselling author Wade D. Pfau, Ph.D., CFA, RICP. Dr. Pfau is the director of the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation and a Professor of Retirement Income at The American College of Financial Services in King of Prussia, PA. As well, he is a Principal and Director for McLean Asset Management. He holds a doctorate in economics from Princeton University and publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals on topics related to retirement income. He hosts the Retirement Researcher website, and is a contributor to Forbes, Advisor Perspectives, Journal of Financial Planning, and an Expert Panelist for the Wall Street Journal. About Safety-First Retirement Income Planning To learn two fundamentally different philosophies for retirement income planning, which I call probability-based and safety-first, diverge on the critical issue of where a retirement plan is best served: in the risk/reward trade-offs of a diversified and aggressive investment portfolio that relies primarily on the stock market, or in the contractual protections of insurance products that integrate the power of risk pooling and actuarial science alongside investments. The probability-based approach is generally better understood by the public. It advocates using an aggressive investment portfolio with a large allocation to stocks to meet retirement goals. My earlier book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement? A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Strategies provides an extensive investigation of probability-based approaches. But this investments-only attitude is not the optimal way to build a retirement income plan. There are pitfalls in retirement that we are less familiar with during the accumulation years. The nature of risk changes. Longevity risk is the possibility of living longer than planned, which could mean not having resources to maintain the retiree’s standard of living. And once retirement distributions begin, market downturns in the early years can disproportionately harm retirement sustainability. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it acts to amplify the impacts of market volatility in retirement. Traditional wealth management is not equipped to handle these new risks in a fulfilling way. More assets are required to cover spending goals over a possibly costly retirement triggered by a long life and poor market returns. And yet, there is no assurance that assets will be sufficient. For retirees who are worried about outliving their wealth, probability-based strategies can become excessively conservative and stressful.This book focuses on the other option: safety-first retirement planning. Safety-first advocates support a more bifurcated approach to building retirement income plans that integrates insurance with investments, providing lifetime income protections to cover spending. With risk pooling through insurance, retirees effectively pay an insurance premium that will provide a benefit to support spending in otherwise costly retirements that could deplete an unprotected investment portfolio. Insurance companies can pool sequence and longevity risks across a large base of retirees, much like a traditional defined-benefit company pension plan or Social Security, allowing for retirement spending that is more closely aligned with averages. When bonds are replaced with insurance-based risk pooling assets, retirees can improve the odds of meeting their spending goals while also supporting more legacy at the end of life, especially in the event of a longer-than-average retirement. We walk through this thought process and logic in steps, investigating three basic ways to fund a retirement spending goal: with bonds, with a diversified investment portfolio, and with risk pooling through annuities and life insurance. We consider the potential role for different types of annuities including simple income annuities, variable annuities, and fixed index annuities. I explain how different annuities work and how readers can evaluate them. We also examine the potential for whole life insurance to contribute to a retirement income plan. When we properly consider the range of risks introduced after retirement, I conclude that the integrated strategies preferred by safety-first advocates support more efficient retirement outcomes. Safety-first retirement planning helps to meet financial goals with less worry. This book explains how to evaluate different insurance options and implement these solutions into an integrated retirement plan.
