A lover of all thing’s sports, he is a Los Angeles Football Club season ticket holder and a member of the American Outlaws, the supporters club for the U.S. men’s national soccer team. When he’s not cheering on his favorite teams, he and his wife enjoy days in L.A. with Cruz, Memphis, and Mila and trying out new restaurants, breweries, and wineries. The one thing she wished she had but couldn't find was a support system of industry peers who believed in community over competition, mentors who could guide her, and a resource for the best marketing ideas around. Candace owned and operated three brick and mortar pet businesses with 27 employees before she turned 30 called Dogaholics. And by the time the recession rolled around in 2010, she was buried in debt--to the tune of $400,000. WOAH. Despite the outward appearance of success, her health, wealth and happiness were so far out of reach, she wondered when she'd ever see them again. But then, the tide changed. She invested in the support she desperately needed from mentors and went on to hit the multiple 7-figure revenue mark. Even after selling three pet businesses, one to Bentley's Pet Stuff and another to Destination Pet (together totaling a multiple 7 figure exit), her proudest moment was actually going from a negative $5,000 in the bank on the regular to three months worth of business expenses saved. It proved she was on the right track and could do anything! 400: The Life of a Pet Sitter

What does it mean to run a multi-dimensional business? Not only do you offer a range of services, but you also have a lot going on every day. Susan Morin, owner of Susan’s Pampered Pet Care, shares how she’s piloted a growing business. She discusses how she highlights the strengths of her business to attract her target clients and walks through the balance of running a business to meet her client’s needs, while also enjoying the day to day operations. I have completed multiple certifications to help expand my knowledge in pet care and also in case of emergencies! I do things differently than a lot of other pet care companies in order to keep your pet's best interest and safety as a top priority at all times. As a pet owner myself that has needed pet care, I realized that pet owners need a compassionate and reliable pet sitter. They need someone who could take their fears away. So in May 2020, I decided to dedicate a full time business to my true passion - animals. I started building my clientele in 2020. I'm so thankful for each and every client I've met since I have formed this company! Even if you only needed me once, I'll never forget your fur babies and the experience each one has taught me. It's been an amazing journey and I look forward to many more years and challenges of what's to come. I have taken care of blind animals and pets with severe anxieties. I will administer meds as needed. I like to build relationships with animals so even if you are looking to board only one time, I want to ensure your pet is comfortable with me. To ensure your pet's best possible comfort level, I offer several pre-boarding visits, as needed, to get them familiar with my home. This will help them feel safe and less anxious in new surroundings when you are away from them and give them added security in your absence. Pets do get more anxious without their owners and also can behave differently in other's homes, so I try to offer something different then the traditional pet sitting most are used to. Getting organized! Where are you storing a client’s info? Where are you storing pets info? Keys? How will you accept payment? Rover/Wag takes care of this Cash App like Time to Pet or others Paypal Review your notes from the meet and greet and fill in any missing information Done research on the specific breed? Health concerns? Behavior? Training needs? Do you know their alarm code? What to do with poop? Do you have good shoes/visibility? Checked the weather Have emergency contacts programed in your phone Prep mentally: Have your emergency plan in place Be prepared for new or undisclosed dog behaviors i.e. bad ones If house sitting or dropins, be prepared for messes and clutter that you may have to clean or work around We reached out to Facebook and Instagram to see what other sitters suggested Look at long-term growth verses “needing clients”. Is this client going to be a promoter or a detractor for your business? As you accept new clients, continue to WOW them! Client referrals are key when building your client base. Think about the type of clients you want. Always be marketing to your target client and be ready to lose those clients who are not ideal. It's ok to take them on at first, but if they cause you stress, they aren't ideal. Make sure to build a relationship with other pet service providers in your area. Groomers, pet shops, trainers, vets... they can be your best friend and advocate, or they can be bad news for you. Show them you're wonderful with pets and that you care. Also, bring them treats and cupcakes because that will stick in their mind. Establishing a sit routine. Meet and greets, at least 2-3. Sometimes an overnight trial. Evaluation! -What makes a good pet sitter Meghan’s list: loyal, dependable, caring, loving, compassionate, on time, respectful (of dog and items in your house), playful, active (so they can play with the dogs), has excellent review (or at least testimonials), available (if you travel a ton, your clients may go elsewhere if you aren’t available a lot) Collin’s List: - on time - Communicative - Let's you know if they're running late, before they're late - greets your pet too - Takes notes during meet and greet - Upfront about prices - Knows their limits - doesn't over promise - Is honest about their schedule and other commitments We asked other sitters what makes a good sitter, Listen, greet pets, polite, interested in job, follow direction, level headed Knows dogs not just likes them Meets personal expectations and has same values in expected care Mesh well Professional website and photos of yourself Takes their job seriously Confident, empathetic, observant Someone who will work with the owner, as a team member As sitters, we tend to have VERY high expectations of other sitters Remember, you will never be able to please everybody or meet their expectations all of the time. Strategies and ways to implement ....if you have a plan to grow, what does that look like? Hiring someone? Or just gaining more clientele? Do you have a plan? Some tips for achieving the goal you have (because lets be honest, most of us quit our goals by february): Your goal (or goals) should be specific. It should be something you can measure, like a certain income you want to make, or number of new clients you want to take on. Your goal should be attainable and realistic. If you just started dog sitting 2 months ago, it may not be wise to have a goal of hitting 6-figures next year. Understand why you have that goal. Set a time limit for the goal (so here we are specifically discussing goals for 2020 but maybe you have a 5 year or 10 year plan) Small steps Track your performance. Show Outline Lots of pet sitters do checks or walks late at night/early in the morning when it’s dark Clothing -reflective gear Lights Know your path Do you bring someone along with you? Do you carry mace or other protection? Leashight/flashlight ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings If doing house sitting or dropping in, lock the door as soon as you enter the house Also prevents dogs escaping Carry keys with you at all times during the visit – especially when taking pets out into the yard. Some clients have doors that automatically lock when closed – you don’t want to be locked outside with the pets Keep your phone with you in case of emergencies but youll also need it to take pics while. You are walking Phone use while dog walking Yes take a picture or two but be very conscientious of where you are walking, especially if it’s on a busy street or in the park where there could be other dogs Speaking up keeping the pups safe: What do you do if you encounter unleashed dogs while walking clients Stun gun? Spray shield like Direct Stop? Keeping the pups safe also meaning keeping them in your care What to do if a dog gets out of your care whether by bolting out the door, seeing a squirrel on a walk and getting out of your grip, etc. What if you live on a busy street? Double exit protection like a screen door or having some kind of gate across your porch, if you have one Our street is somewhat busy but our main concern is the neighborhood cats We watch a great dane that loves to chase cats and squirrels so we are always cautious to look out for them when he leaves our house Snow/blizzard cancellations? Go by school district you are closest to? The Role of a House and Pet Sitter What exactly is a house/pet sitter? A house sitter is an individual hired by a homeowner to maintain the home while the homeowner is away. A house sitter may be compensated by an agreed upon pay or the ability to live rent free in the home while the owner is not there. In exchange, house sitters assume general responsibilities involved in the maintenance of the home such as watering plants, taking out garbage, checking mail, and deterring intruders. If you would like for your house sitter to take care of your pet as well, make sure to discuss this prior to their first visit.
