Dave is the owner of Top Out Adventures.   After a 20 year corporate career in operations, Dave got off the corporate treadmill to pursue his dream of introducing people to great outdoor adventure experiences.   He grew up exploring the parks and trails around his home in Nashville and the Smoky Mountains.  Life eventually took him to Monterrey, Mexico where he and his wife, Julie, had their two daughters, Zoe and Lucy.  While in Mexico he was introduced to the Sierra Madre mountains that are just south of Monterrey.   He and  Zoe, then a toddler, would grab the kid pack after work and go on a quick climb before dinner. Zoe, now 15, is training to become a Top Out Adventures Guide Apprentice. Career opportunities brought Dave and his family to Dallas, TX in 2008 where they still live.   With that move came the start of Dave’s running adventures.   It started with marathons, but those didn’t scratch the itch of getting out in nature and the mountains.   It all came together when a buddy found the Transrockies Run in 2012.   His buddy never signed up, but Dave went and was hooked.   Since then Dave has run numerous ultras up to 50 miles, the Grand Canyon Rim2Rim2Rim and races in the Rockies, Mexico Copper Canyons, Himalayas and Alps. If you ask him, he will say he is just getting started. It was the experience of the stage races that has most influenced the vision for Top Out Adventures.   The adventure and fun of meeting a small group of people with the same passion in a wild location and pushing one’s limits day after day was life-changing.   These trips allowed Dave to explore places he would never have otherwise and to test his limits with the confidence of a support structure.  The friendships that were formed on those trips continue to be a family around the world. Dave loves to be in the mountains even when he’s not racing.   He has been in Colorado every summer since 2012 where he has climbed 14,000’ peaks and covered many of the trails in the Arkansas River Valley.  He has found that fresh air, getting out of the city, and pushing his limits are the best way to fill his tank and tackle the stress that life brings.  He’s a better husband, dad, and friend after a trip.  If you go on an adventure with Dave, you can expect careful planning, a safety first mindset and a “make it happen, capt’n” (his favorite phrase) drive.   His passion for client experiences is the compass for his decisions and the vision for Top Out Adventures. Coree Woltering is as much known for his Speedo and positive attitude as he is for his stand-out running ability. The 29-year-old Midwesterner races all distances and all surfaces, but always while rocking his signature Speedo and a friendly smile. His coach told Trail Runner Magazine he’s never heard Coree make an excuse, and if he could bottle up Coree’s work ethic and perseverance and sell it, he’d be a billionaire. Coree began his running career with the 400m and 800m distances, which he ran from middle school through college. He was en route to becoming a professional triathlete when he discovered ultrarunning. When he paced a friend at the 2014 Leadville 100, Coree was immediately hooked on the atmosphere of the race, the scenery, the community, and the idea of running 100 miles in the mountains. Coree had never run longer than 16 miles when he signed up for the Quad Cities Marathon in 2014 and ran 2:37. Within a year, he entered the Silver Rush 50 in Leadville and placed 4th, then won every trail ultra he signed up for in 2015, including Tunnel Hill, the Malibu Canyon 50K, and the Herb Parsons Trail Half Marathon. In 2016, at age 26, he averaged a 6.6-minute pace to won the Tunnel Hill 50 in his home state of Illinois. He placed 25th at the most prestigious ultra in the country—Western States—in 2018, and in 2019 he’s already won five races. It was good to hear Sam’s back story and how the company was started with the right approach, attitude, and passion. Presented by Race SLO Robby McLaughlinFrom Robby: I was born and raised in San Luis Obispo, and grew up quite the butter ball. Being overweight was very hard on my confidence, especially since the rest of my family were all stud athletes. I didn’t understand why I got the short end of the stick, so around 10 or 11 years old I hit the books on diets and exercise. I went through all the fad diets at that time. Saving up my quarters to ride my bike to the grocery store to buy Slim Fast were some of the more embarrassing moments of my life. Till this day, I still don’t think my family knows about that.     I started running every night after dark so no one would see me (I knew I was young and I felt like others would judge me for it). I did push-ups and sit-ups every night before bed. I would also go into the garage after my brothers went to bed and try to lift what they left out on our gym equipment. Often it didn’t work out in my favor. In high school I came to realize I was pretty strong. I loved football practice even more because we got to lift after. I started winning strength competitions and broke the high school all time record for strength.  After high school I joined the Army because I thought I would be good at it. I kept running and lifting, learning a lot. I had a few serious back injuries but wanted to stay active, so I studied different ways to be strong and still be able to run. Even though I was told that one can either be big and strong, or thin and fast, I didn’t accept that. I broke the Alaskan PT (2 min of push-ups, 2 min of sit-ups and 2 mile run) record for the Army.   During my deployments I kept on my journey of learning. Spare time in the desert consisted of reading whatever magazines we had over there. The occasional internet time was usually reading blogs on bodybuilding.com or lifting. I was determined to be the strongest yet fittest person I could be.  I was on a semi-pro football team for a short time and became the strength and conditioning coach for a local high school, and for my battalion training soldiers for missions and to pass their PT test. After the Army my drive did not let up. I kept competing in every strength sport I could, as well as triathlons.   I did not love one specific sport but yet I loved all of them. I knew there had to be something out there that had the best of all of them. I never found it, so I created Headstrong Fitness in my garage.   My main education comes from experience and injury. Danelle is a business owner, professional endurance athlete, fitness coach, and survivalist.Danelle has been working as a Personal Fitness Trainer and Endurance-Specialist Coach since 1993. She has a degree in Kinesiology and Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she graduated in 1994.She started working as a personal trainer at ‘Boulder’s Pulse Fitness Center’, where she worked from 1993 through 1996. She then moved to Summit County, Colorado in 1996 where she began teaching fitness-based clinics. She has taught clinics and camps on running, snowshoeing, cycling, triathlon and adventure racing. From 1997 to 2007 she worked as a personal trainer and endurance sport instructor at the Silverthorne Recreation Center. Danelle is an A.C.E certified fitness instructor. Each year she participates in continuing education courses to maintain her certification and keep updated on latest research and techniques.In 1999 Danelle began putting more focus on her specialty—training for endurance events, and started coaching athletes using email to send weekly workouts. Her workout programs are designed specific to each athlete– to fit their schedule, fitness level and goals. She has helped overweight couch potatoes to get off the couch and get fit and healthy. She has also worked with all ages and ability of athletes; including helping several athletes reach elite/professional status. Her clients include trail, mountain, and ultra runners, adventure racers, mountain bikers, triathletes, Nordic skiers, snowshoers, and downhill skiers.Danelle is also an accomplished athlete herself. She is the ‘winningest’ endurance athlete in the world, having won several hundred events in various endurance sports. Included in her wins are several National and World Championships in the sports of Skyrunning, Adventure Racing, Mountain Running, Rogaining, Snowshoeing, Winter Triathlon, Triathlon, and Duathlon. She holds the female speed record for climbing all 54 of Colorado’s 14ers in 14 days, 49 min. Coach Nellie has traveled around the world to participate in events and give presentations and clinics for her sponsors. She started competing in high school cross-country and continues to compete to this day.In addition to coaching, personal training, and participating in endurance sports Danelle is an event coordinator. She has organized over 50 events since her first event, the Evergreen Triathlon and Duathlon in 1995. In 1996 she organized the Colorado Multisport Festival, a four-race event. She also organized the SkyFestival, a 6-race high-altitude event in 1997. Danelle ‘re-started’ the Mt. Evans Ascent running race in 1997 and brought the X-Terra Triathlon to Keystone in 1999. She also organized for six years the Swift Skedaddle Snowshoe races. Additionally she has organized several off-road triathlons, duathlons and winter multi-sport events including the Winter Triathlon National Championship. Currently she organizes one event, the Moab Trail Marathon.In December 2007 Nellie survived a near death accident, when she fell 60 feet when she slipped while trail running. She survived two nights and three days in sub-freezing temperatures with a shattered pelvis and broken back doing crunches for over 50 hours until her neighbor noticed she was missing, her dog ran out for help and led the search team to her remote location. She lived to not only walk again, but to compete and win several adventure races since. After the accident Nellie met her husband BC and they bought a 50’s diner called Milts in Moab, UT which they enjoy the demands of being small business owners.Nellie and BC had their first child, Noah, in 2008. William was born in 2010. Motherhood has been the most fulfilling challenge in Nellie’s life. She had cut back her training and racing to enjoy time with the boys. 5 year old Noah is following in his mom’s endurance footsteps as he has already competed in a 5k, mud run, triathlon, and bike race. William has taken on his mom’s wild side and we expect him to be a top adventure racer.Danelle has a passion for fitness and endurance sports. She lives, sleeps, and breathes endurance—not only participating herself but also helping others to enjoy sports and to better their lives through endurance sports. In all, Ian has won 53 ultramarathons. Some of his wins include the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run twice and the Superior Trail 100 Mile Run. He’s a two-time, top-ten finisher at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. He’s finished the JFK 50 Mile Run 22 times, placing as high as second twice. He was part of a four-person team that won and set a course record at the Oxfam Hong Kong Trailwalker 100K in 2001. In 2002, he completed the Grand Slam of Ultramarathons by finishing Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, Vermont 100 Mile, Leadville Trail 100 Mile, and the Wasatch Front 100 Mile in a single summer.Ian spends time on the roads as well. She’s since competed in two U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials.In 2012, Emily entered her first ultramarathon and placed second in the prestigious JFK 50 Mile (6:17) – she’s since won the race twice. She holds the course record at Moab’s Red Hot 55K (4:24). Emily was selected for the 2013 100K World Team and placed 7th female (26th overall) at the 2013 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run.
