Birthday 2023: ADHD, pageant interviews and a pageant survival guide

Liza Gundowry is Miss Mauritius 2022/23. As an official ambassador of Mauritius, she will represent her country at Miss World 2023 in India.  By day, Liza is a Senior Education Consultant and a Studies Facilitator, assisting students at the University of Oxford to better navigate their studies. She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Oxford, and a Bachelor’s degree from University College London and El Colegio de México. She has an academic background in international relations and conflict resolution. Liza is also a freelance presenter and has previously worked for the likes of MTV, Radio Plus, and the Mauritius Open Air Festival in London.  Since a young age, Liza has been passionate about music and theatre, attending a weekend performing arts school alongside her weekday school studies.  Liza’s Beauty With A Purpose project, Nou Later Nou Lafors (which can be translated to “Our roots, our power”), aims to combat poverty and food insecurity by empowering women to become self-sufficient and grow their own crops. Having grown up in Sainte Croix, an underprivileged area of Mauritius, Liza is no stranger to the socioeconomic challenges faced by residents in similar communities. Her project focuses on providing support to women from Sainte Croix, offering relief and sustainable solutions to families struggling to afford basic food necessities and maintain a balanced diet.  As a strong advocate for women's empowerment and with a background in researching the subject in Mauritius, Liza recognises the significance of using her platform as Miss Mauritius to make a tangible impact on the lives of women.  Additionally, in line with her commitment to education, Liza has also implemented a school awareness program as part of her project. This program visits schools across Mauritius, educating children about the importance of local food production and cultivating crops at home. Britney Lane received her BA in psychology from Emmanuel College in 2019. She went on to complete her Masters of Social Work from the University of New Hampshire in 2022.  Britney works for The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester in New Hampshire as a child and family therapist and case manager. Her work focuses on trauma therapy, which empowers children and adolescents to tell their experiences through storytelling.  Outside of work, Britney is passionate about survivor led policy change. She helped pass the Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights in Rhode Island giving rights to thousands of survivors using her personal story.  Additionally, she helped pass a United Nations resolution bill which gives the 1.3 billion survivors of sexual violence access to justice.  Britney was crowned Miss NH USA 2023 this past February. Her roots run deep in this region, and it's here that she honed her competitive tennis skills during her high school years.  Paitin has an 8-year-long tenure in community pharmacy under her belt and has recently pivoted towards a career in dental nursing. Simultaneously, she's passionate about imparting knowledge and skills to the younger generation in North Queensland through her modelling and deportment classes.  No stranger to the spotlight, Paitin has been competing in pageants since her teen years. Her crowning achievements include competing in Miss Teen Australia, Miss World Australia, and Miss Grand Australia. In 2022, she claimed the First Runner Up title at Miss Grand Australia and is now a National Finalist for the same title in 2023. Tahlia Edmonds is an 18-year-old gymnast, dancer, landscaper and inspiring advocate hailing from Country Victoria. Raised on a farm, Tahlia cherishes the simplicity and hard work of rural life. She wakes up early each day to milk goats and work on her farm, embodying the spirit of a true country girl.  From a young age, Tahlia was drawn to the joy of movement and expression, dreaming of becoming a ballerina or a gymnast. Despite the hardships she faced in the aftermath of the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009, which took everything from her family except the clothes they were wearing, her passion for dance and gymnastics never wavered​.  The trauma of the disaster, the deadliest bushfire in her neighborhood, left a lasting impact on Tahlia and her family. The Edmonds' family home was reduced to ashes, their community devastated and the process of rebuilding their lives continues to this day​. Yet Tahlia has always strived to keep her spirits high, using her experiences to empathise with others who have been through similar ordeals​.  Despite the financial constraints brought about by the fires, Tahlia kept her dream alive, seizing every opportunity to practice her handstands and dance movements​. Her dedication paid off when, at 13, she was gifted a term of rhythmic gymnastics for her birthday. A lot of pageant girls will claim that they're not your typical pageant girl, but I'm willing to bet there aren't many who play AFL, rugby and are a sports commentator on radio. Miss World Australia 2019 Sarah Marschke does all of those on top of working as a disability worker and running a charitable effort in South Africa with the help of her brother. She also sings at the Conservatorium of Music here in Sydney. Just don't ask her to get the lyrics right. For that reason, I also strongly recommend you video yourself answering these questions so you can not only hear how you sound, but also observe your body posture and any unusual tics you might have with your hands, feet etc. Also, for that reason I recommend videoing full-length, not just your face and hands. A mirror will do at a pinch. If you're daring, try answering in front of a group of people and ask for feedback (but I do think YOUR OWN feedback on yourself is the most important). I've met many of my best friends through pageantry. There are also some deep-rooted problems in the Australian pageantry system: egos and bullying to name two. I could sit on the side. Turn a blind eye. Man it would be easier if I did that. But I decided that giving a voice to the voiceless and making pageantry a safer/better place for contestants was the reason this platform should exist. As I mention in the intro to this podcast, I was attending a pageant that I’ve been to several times over the years, and I couldn’t help but notice how much smaller the audience had gotten since I’d first attended. This should be worrying for a multitude of reasons. If pageantry is supposed to be about women’s empowerment, then pageantry should be a massive growth industry given how hot a topic women’s empowerment and gender equality are at the moment. So why are audiences shrinking? Why are participation rates declining? Both of which mean entry costs and costs for the audience are increasing. I decided I needed to get other people’s perspectives to have any chance of understanding what was going on and to have any chance of fixing it. Maddy May has definitely been through her fair share of tough times. And then some. I’ve always said adversity builds character. People who have depth rarely achieve it easily.
