We follow gambling drifter Oscar Isaac as he tries to outrun his past as a soldier incarcerated for torturing prisoners of war. It's pretty dark, uncompromising and in perfect Paul Schrader fashion, has a man writing in a diary in it.

Part two of Schrader-thon! It wasn't deliberate BUT, the quality takes a bit of a knock the further we go on. Like life, it is full of peaks and troughs, ebbs and flows and Malcolm McDowell. There's some cool stuff to enjoy here (even if it's too long)!

This titular Daddy attempts to do some really awful things to his son at one point while being in a state of consistent inebriation. Maybe he grabbed the knife to try and give his son a more agreeable haircut. Fix his fringe. Daddy didn't know his actions would be misconstrued. That's it, he was perfectly safe. Ant Timpson's directorial horror/comedy debut starring Elijah Wood is a pretty fun romp.

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's acting debut in the loose telling of his life story, titled after one of his albums. He does a decent job as the lead in this film among the heavyweights he's against but really, the term "paint-by-numbers" comes to mind.

We're not super impressed with the Oscars this year and we explain why. Laura, personally, loves a bit of glamour and fanfare, but this year was, all-in-all, a total disaster. Don't even mention Amy Schumer and that Spider-Man costume...Also, GIVE MORE WOMEN AWARDS. Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves everything!

This is without remembering that we covered TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA in our infancy and still have GONE GIRL to uncover in a future episode BUT don't let that diminish the quality and sheer entertainment of this Stuart Gordon film. Out of the crop of the recent cinematic wonders we've been graced with over the last few months (some good, some pretty bad) FORTRESS is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Full disclosure... Ryan loves Ridley Scott but he's well aware of the some times sporadic quality of his work. Some times it's great. Some times it's not. In this case, it's not great. It's also noted as one of the latest "spots" in any of the films we've covered, within the last few minutes of the film inordinate length. And yes, the film is inordinate. It's too long. And it subjects you to a scene of the worst kind of barbaric human indecency one can inflict on another not once, but TWICE so you're able to ascertain some level of subtly from this heavy handed example of storytelling. We break it down pretty succinctly but it's not easy to bring the yucks when this is what you have to work with... Good luck.

A Room With a View (1985), directed by James Ivory, has not just one, but THREE penises in it. Also, so many balls. Join us as we welcome our first guest, a friend of the podcast: Miriam Ruckert. There were just too many penises for Ryan and Laura to discuss alone. All that fuss over a room? I mean, it's a nice view and everything but really? Times were much simpler back then. All you had to worry about was where your window was pointed and if it was it was "decent" to drink lemonade in with your breakfast. If you didn't already know, this film is what you would call a "romance" and James Ivory is built specifically to make films of this ilk. This might not be everyone's cup of tea but there's no argument, it looks bloody beautiful. In this special "video" episode, we try something new. There's some hiccups. There's some distortion. But guess what? We'll do better next time.

Eastern Promises (2007), is our very first David Cronenberg film! And the indent that Ryan made for this is truly spectacular. He’s really outdone himself with this one. We’ve been waiting to review this film for a long time, as it is famously infamous, and also we wanted to wait because it is, of course, a Christmas movie. Some may argue, more Christmas-y than Die Hard (1988). Grab a bottle of Russian vodka, à la Harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant (1992), and swig away while you enjoy this treasure.We love you, Viggo.It’s streaming on Starz, if you subscribe to that channel (at least as of 11/29/2021)!
