Andy Lawrie preaching //

Paul faced malicious, false charges brought against him by the jealous Jewish leaders. He was caught in a spiritual war - a fight against the powers of darkness, seeking to suppress the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. //
//
Therefore we must put on the armour of God (Ephesians 6), always on the alert to the schemes and attacks of the devil. The enemy lies in wait, looking for opportunities to oppose God’s purposes. But, compared to God, he has limited power. //
//
We must also be on our guard against our own sinful nature. Foolish arguments, pride, envy, poor doctrine - all these and more can lead us into danger. Wisdom is to feed regularly on God’s word, making careful choices about what we take into our minds and hearts. //
//
In every case, Paul’s defence when on trial is the gospel of Christ - the salvation for all his hearers and the salvation open to us and to all around us. Acts 26:29: And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am--except for these chains.”

//
Three accusations are made against Paul: //
1. A personal allegation //
2. A political allegation //
3. A doctrinal allegation //
//
Paul responds that he serves the same God as his accusers, whom he serves with a clear conscience. Further he demonstrates how the gospel is central to his life and his defence. //
//
In this sermon we hear how dependent we are on God - on his Spirit - to live our lives and to stand innocent before him in the last judgement. Righteousness, self-control are the the work of Christ in us.

Sunday, 26 July 2020 | Acts 21:18-22:29 //
Khumbulani Sibanda | Avoiding Misunderstanding //
In this passage, we see the apostle Paul submitting to a holiness tradition – the Narazite vow. It is clear that Paul knew his position in Christ. Therefore this cleansing ritual was not to bring Paul into a right relationship with God; it was to preserve and support his relationship with others. Paul would go to all possible lengths to ensure that no barrier came between the gospel and those hearing his message. //
//
Even though Paul was arrested, he still found a way to share his testimony. In this, he obeyed Jesus’s commission – to spread the Good News to every nation. Paul’s journey was not easy – our journeys are often not easy – but he put his trust in the Lord, and so must we.

Keith Cooper | Following the Saviour //
Paul’s travels bring him into contact with yet more believers. Their warm welcome shows how completely they have forgiven him for his history as a persecutor of the church, present and assenting to the murder of the martyr Stephen. Simply, the believers love Paul. //
//
These brothers and sisters in Christ warn Paul of the risks he faces, pursuing his course; these warnings are based on revelation from the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, Paul single-mindedly continues as he believes he must, to share the gospel to many nations, even at the risk of his own life. Paul is committed to the mission.

Sunday, 12 July 2020 | Acts 20:17-38 //
Dave Brown | Passing on the baton //
After a long season of ministering and teaching, now Paul addresses the Ephesians elders, in humility. He is walking in the narrow path set before him by the Holy Spirit. He charges the elders to continue the task of caring for the church – protecting the Christians from the attacks that would surely come.
