Bob and Debbie Long have given their lives to serving the needs of students at home and abroad. After 40+ years of youth work, when most people consider retirement, they are creating opportunities for college students in the Philippines to become the next generation of youth leaders. Bob Long is a professor at both the Baptist Theological College, and Cebu Graduate School of Theology in Mandaue City, Philippines. He teaches youth ministry, theology, Bible and leadership courses. His wife Debbie leads the student orientation classes, and the engagement and ESL (English as a Second Language) groups. After 40+ years of working with youth as pastors, directors, facilitators and consultants in the United States, many people thought they would retire. Instead Bob and Debbie moved from the Windy City (Chicago, Illinois), to Mandaue City, a tropical island paradise in the Philippines, and joined the work the was happening there. Nathan Oloumu is transforming his city by housing and educating orphans, and combatting fatherlessness by working with prisoners, planting churches that strengthen and equip families, and training groups of men how to become leaders in their homes, work places, churches and communities. Nathan Oloumu is a community leader in Kenya, East Africa, who is transforming his city by serving the people who are most overlooked. He built an orphanage and a school that cares for 43 children. He visits prisoners to bring encouragement, hope and rehabilitation. He plants churches that help strengthen and equip families, and train men to be leaders in their homes, workplaces, churches and communities. Nathan and his wife Florence have three children, one they adopted when the mother died in childbirth. Kyle Turner’s life turned upside-down when his daughter Maegan was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that required 24/7 care, a role he joyfully embraces. Hear what being a father and grandfather mean to him this week on Now I See. Six years in the army and fourteen years as an owner/manager of six high profile health and fitness centers helped Kyle Turner become tough. Being a husband, a father of three, and a grandfather of three has made him tender. This is especially evident in the way he cares for Maegan, his daughter who was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that requires 24/7 care. Kyle found a job he could do from home so he could be present and provide for his family. In the course of Maegan’s care, Kyle and his wife Vernetta learned more than they never wanted to know about seizures and medications, breathing treatments, feeding tubes, palliative career, cognitive and muscle therapies. They have spent more than 900 days in the Neurovascular Intensive Care Unit (NVICU), and even more on their knees in prayer. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “I never saw this as a burden,” said Kyle, who embraces the opportunity to show a high level of extraordinary care for his family. Kyle Turner’s life turned upside-down when his daughter Maegan was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that required 24/7 care, a role he joyfully embraces. Hear what being a father and grandfather mean to him this week on Now I See. Six years in the army and fourteen years as an owner/manager of six high profile health and fitness centers helped Kyle Turner become tough. Being a husband, a father of three, and a grandfather of three has made him tender. This is especially evident in the way he cares for Maegan, his daughter who was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that requires 24/7 care. Kyle found a job he could do from home so he could be present and provide for his family. In the course of Maegan’s care, Kyle and his wife Vernetta learned more than they never wanted to know about seizures and medications, breathing treatments, feeding tubes, palliative career, cognitive and muscle therapies. They have spent more than 900 days in the Neurovascular Intensive Care Unit (NVICU), and even more on their knees in prayer. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “I never saw this as a burden,” said Kyle, who embraces the opportunity to show a high level of extraordinary care for his family. Anna Coleman is finding hope and courage after a recent and tragic loss. Discover how she is moving through her pain to live a life bigger than she dared before on this week’s episode of Now I See.———————————————————————————————————————— Anna Coleman grew up in a large, close-knit family that learned to rely on each other through difficult seasons of life. They have lived and worked in Mongolia, Montana, Wyoming, Connecticut, Utah, and now a farm in rural North Dakota. Anna enjoys music and a wide variety of outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and camping. All these things have helped Anna become resourceful, resilient, and good at making friends and putting people at ease. Anna eaned her Associate Degree in Art and Science from Willisotn College, and is currently training to work with people from cultures that share knowledge through stories and oral traditions. Anna has been able to use her training, knowledge and skills every day as child-care worker. Part of her job requires her to teach and comfort preschoolers. After a shocking tragedy that rocked her entire community, and affected her deeply and personally, she is having to learn to find comfort and healing herself. In circumstances that might cause others to shrink back, Anna is courageously growing through the pain so she can bring hope and comfort to people around the world. This Memorial Day, we celebrate the life and legacy of Major Shawn Campbell, a Marine who was killed in a training accident in Hawaii, in 2016. His mother, Donna McGrew, tells his story. ————————————————————————————————————————Gold Star Mother, Donna McGrew, lost her son, Major Shawn Campbell, in a helicopter training exercise in Hawaii in 2016. Abandoned by her father before she was born, by her husband shortly after Shawn’s birth, and by her government in the shadowy details surrounding her son’s untimely death, Donna never felt abandoned by God. She felt God’s provision and protection though her difficult childhood and parenting years, her corporate and private careers, multiple health challenges, and the tragedy that changed her forever. Now remarried and retired, Donna recalls the life that shaped her son into the husband, father, military leader and hero he became. On this Memorial Day, we wish to honor the life and legacy of Major Shawn M. It grew my marriage. We have seen God truly work miracles. My doctors were shocked. They had never seen anything like this. I looked at them and told them, “I serve a big God. SHOW QUOTES As a counselor, the first thing I want to do is show people there is hope, and they can overcome–with help–the issues they are facing. Thoughts are so connected to feelings, and feelings are connected to actions and the results you get. To change the actions–and the results–you have to go back to the thoughts and emotions connected to them. Replacing lies with truth is always a good starting place. It’s OK to feel emotion. You need to sit with that emotion. You can change negative thinking. You can only change what’s in your control to change. Why am I feeling like that? Am I not getting enough sleep? Am I not eating well? Am I stuck in a cycle of negativity? Sometimes the answer is simple. Realize that negative things will happen on your journey, and it’s OK. Don’t beat yourself up about that. Stay focused on the positive. Be grateful. Take things one day at a time. What you are experiencing is normal. The circumstances may be unique to you, but what you’re feeling is normal. You don’t have to go through it alone. SHOW QUOTES I worked to overcome my fear of heights by climbing to the top of the silo literally every single night, just to prove to myself I could do it. Fears can keep you safe, or they can cripple you and get in the way of accomplishing something important. Fear might still be in the back of your head, but it doesn’t have to cripple you. When you understand yourself and why you’re fearful of things, it can really help think through things so that they don’t hold you back. It’s OK if you make mistakes. I want you to make mistakes because that’s the way you learn. You're scared. It’s 100% OK. Your fear has value. There's a reason you’re scared of this. It’s a natural response; it's a good thing. And there are ways to conquer this. The reason you’re not having fun, and the reason you feel like you’re failing is because you’re doing it for the wrong reason. You’re doing it for yourself. Just change the reason you’re doing it. When I say I’m conquering fears, I haven't actually conquered them (as in, ‘they're not my fears anymore and I made them go away’); I've just learned to not allow them to cripple me. I conquer them to the effect they’re not the thing that runs my life. It’s not going to do much good to face a fear until you know why. This purpose is more important than the fears you have. Once you have a sense of purpose, you have a reason to conquer your fears. Identify your fear and start chipping away at it. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Take small steps and build on that, and focus on your end goal. SHOW NOTES Jan Tijmes’ recovery from physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuses is miraculous in every way. Be amazed at his candor. Some portions of this show may be unsuitable for younger audiences. SHOW QUOTES It takes a lot of courage to see oneself and to be willing to see things and walk through the healing fire to know that you are valuable and worthy. I always held on to the hope that I could be loved. When something traumatic happens in our childhood, we first move into a place of denial or blaming, which leads to victimhood and resentment. With codependence, it’s difficult to see function and dysfunction, because you don’t really see the use of a substance. It’s really how the familiar patterns of sin begin to form. I never had attention as a child; no one looking into my eyes, looking into my soul, showing me I had worth and value by giving me their time. No longer would I have that desire to drink again. What I didn’t realize was that God had only removed the 8% of the iceberg that floats above the surface, and the 92% below the surface was the pain in my heart that I still had to deal with. For anyone struggling with addictions, what's really happening is God is saying, “I'm calling you home. You are no longer a spiritual orphan. I want to be #1 in your life. Seek Me first.” Codependence is the absence of love, like being in hell. It’s hell on earth. Today I can tell you that I am a child of God. I am very much loved, I am valuable in the kingdom of God. I’m worthwhile, I'm a success. He cares for me. I know these things and they are starting to come into my heart for the first time in my life. I had to develop a will that said I am going to be somebody, and that I would not be the terrible things people told me I would be. I had a strong will. I just didn’t know how to use it properly. I always had a hope in me that God was with me and would give me the strength to get through. I want to change. I don’t want to be stuck as the person I’ve been. I want to be the woman God wants me to be. Truly, God can heal anything. He can take the hardest hearts and the most broken of hearts and put it back together. SHOW NOTES Jason Curry, president of the Texas Baptist Home for Children, tells about his family’s journey with fostering and adoption and invites you to help children in crisis. SHOW QUOTES I love being a dad, and I love being God’s son. To have a mom and dad that remain faithful to each other to this day is a big blessing for me. It was a love for God that did that, not the love they had for each other or the human commitment level they were able to maintain. It was a supernatural commitment. Foster care is like being a firefighter: you get in, do the job you're supposed to do, and get out. Your job isn’t necessarily to be in the hospital or helping with recovery. Foster parenting is emergency parenting. You have one job as a foster parent: love on them and introduce them to Jesus. Our house was full. We had three bedrooms with three kids in each room. The oldest was 8 years old; there were two school-aged kids, and the rest were in preschool. Every child deserves a daddy, and every child deserves a heavenly father. When I say ‘every child deserves a daddy’, I mean God gave a need in every child's life for a mom and father. There are some very special exceptions, and exceptional people that meet that need too. When we have little girls come into care, and there has been a daddy that did them wrong or a bad man in the house, sometimes the most valuable thing is a single mother. Two families walked into court, and one walked out. You can’t ask for better. Our hearts have to be big enough to love people. When we love people, their presence is not required. There are people I love that are no longer on this earth, but in heaven. There are people that are geographically out of reach, and I love them. Our hearts have to be big enough for that. Brokenness is scary for us. Accepting your weaknesses doesn’t make you a strong person, but it does make you a courageous person. We need people of courage. SHOW QUOTES I see myself as an alcoholic, drug-abusing hippie, and God was gracious enough to deliver me. I'm gonna be honest, I’m not a real cowboy. I have a hat and boots, but I don’t have a horse. I have ridden horses many times, and I got to go on a half-day roundup. As a preacher, there were two things that were important to me: one, teaching the Bible; two, the power of story. Jesus used stories– 75% of the Bible is stories–so I've always been a story teller. My process [as a writer] is usually spending a lot of time thinking about a story: How do I begin this? How does it go? You really don't know until you sit down to write it, and the story flows out of you. My son is a journalist, and is ten times the writer I’ll ever be. I talked to him recently about the possibility of editing for me. I don’t know if I can afford him, frankly. He promised to give me the family discount. If you want to be a writer, write. Writers write. If you're not writing, you’re not a writer.
