She launched her own business, Maine Music and Health about a decade ago because conventional jobs limited her from doing the work she really wanted to do. She's the founder of the Hannah Grimes Marketplace, a main street store celebrating the local producers of Keene, NH, as well as running an incubator to help businesses start and grow.  She's also the co-founder of Radically Rural Summit, an annual conference to exchange success stories about what's working in rural America from land development to renewable energy to entrepreneurship. He's the founder of TerraSlate Paper, a waterproof and tear proof paper used by the military and as washable menus by restaurants. In the fall of 2020, he shared a post on his blog titled,  I'm Starting Over.  He decided to delete his digital life by breaking up with social media.  He's been an online entrepreneur for 15 years and has helped thousands start online businesses, so as you can imagine this was a decision he didn't take lightly. He co-founded Fizzle.co over a decade ago. It's one of the original online communities helping solo creators get paid to do something they love by being honest, determined and making something people actually want. I’ll admit, making the transition to self-employment isn’t the same as changing jobs. It’s completely different. It takes time and preparation, but with the right plan it’s possible to start working for yourself within the next 6 months like it was for Trevor Page. He’s gonna tell us exactly how he did it! He is the founder of the CraftyCodr based in Toronto, offering educational training about how to become a java programmer. He’s also the author of How to Program With Java. In 2002 he taught himself how to program using Java in college, worked several years as a software developer and then turned himself in the recognized Java expert he is today. Once he discovered the opportunity of generating passive income by creating content online, he spent the next 6 months learning everything he could about how to start his business. He first started a blog, then wrote an e-book and finally began the transition to self-employment. He left his job to focus full time on building his business. Today his two core products are a 50+ hour course on Java programming and a membership to his entire course archive. On average he gets a new customer every other day. This is another great example of building a niche business. On average he gets a new customer every other day. This is another great example of building a niche business. He’s making slightly less than when he left his job, but says he enjoys the flexibility of how he can work much more. He’s actually working around 20 hours a week right now! 6-Month Transition to Self-Employment With Java Programmer Trevor Page (120)

Feel overwhelmed? Don't know what you are passionate about? Purge to find your purpose. When you want to make a big change in your life like working for yourself, it can be so overwhelming and even more so when you don't have a sense of purpose about what it is you want to do. I'm going to give you some unconventional advice about how to rediscover what you really care about. Purge your life. Clear it out. Let go of all the stuff that no longer energizes you. Seriously! I've interviewed 500+ who have figured out how to work for themselves and a common first step they all take to figure themselves out is to do some sort of purge. How does the transformational magic of purging work? Let's use your bedroom as an example. When you get rid of everything in your line of sight that doesn't energize you, no longer has any meaning to you or you haven't used in months, all that’s what's left behind is all the stuff that you really care about.  Those possessions start providing you with a clue about how you live you life and what's important to you. They will help you find your purpose.  And I'm not just talking about getting rid of physical possessions, but also purging:  Obligations like meetings, memberships to organizations and even ongoing help you've been giving family or friends that really don’t need it any longer.  Digital content like text messages, apps on your phone, your email inbox, photos, documents, etc. Relationships with friends and colleagues who are no longer on your path, but hang onto them because they are familiar and because you have a shared history. Spend less time with people who aren’t helping you grow.  Here are some basic guidelines when doing a purge of your life:  Don't do it all at once. Pick one group of related items at a time like your shoes, books or your kitchen utensils. If you haven't used something in a year, you aren't going to use it again. Don't save it for a future emergency that most likely will never happen.  Start with the less emotional stuff first to get into a groove of purging. Avoid personal mementos, photos or even your clothes at first because your emotional attachments will only slow you down.  Write down how you feel as you purge. What patterns are you noticing? What thoughts are crossing your mind? The act of getting rid of stuff combined with writing about it, forces you to reflect on your life and where you want to go.  Doing a purge is a metamorphosis of yourself. You are shedding your old self, your old interests and your old support network, so you can grow into new interests and a new community of people who will support your new identity. Jennifer Rash, provides a beautiful human case study on the endless choices we all make to manage what she calls the work-life tension. She’s a freelance graphic designer raising two children with her husband, a freelance illustrator, in Milwaukee, WI. Are you stuck getting your idea off the ground? It might be because you are thinking too big. Amy Kauffman will tell you, it’s ok to dream big, but start small. Creating a minimal viable product (MVP) is the most effective way to start your business. Paring down your product or service to an MVP enables you to quickly capitalize on the enthusiasm from your clients and let’s them tell you the features they want most next. Amy is founder the of Givily, a software as a service (SaaS) firm that helps companies manage their donations. A few of her clients include Wholefoods, Annie’s Natural and Cliffbar. More recently, she started another business, Player’s Future, to help professional athletes make a successful transition from the spotlight to civilian life. Some important lessons from our conversation include:  How Amy makes time for both of her business and her 2-year old by staying present in all circumstances. How she manages her work productivity using sprints. How she recognized her personal need to connect with people and decided to create businesses around that need. Currently, she has her own firm, the Business of Aging, advising major brands on how to best communicate to the 50+ market. Too many people ignore those feelings, but Dr. Ambreen Zaman-Riaz decided to explore them, forever changing the direction of her life. She decided to fight for young women to gain their financial independence. She’s originally from Pakistan. There, she built a successful career as a cosmetic dermatologist and settled down to have a family. In 2008 things started to change for her after volunteering at an earthquake relief camp in Pakistan. That experience caused her to re-evaluate her life. She said she no longer saw a future on her current career path. A year later she borrowed $4,000 from her mother to teach 5 young girls in a remote village how to earn a living for themselves. She turned that project into a social business enterprise called I Change Her Life. Her organization today teaches life and business skills to young girls in 13 villages in Pakistan and through her network of partnerships, she has helped empower 88,000 girls discover their financial independence. Last year her work was awarded the prestigious Gold Stevie Award, a global award to recognize positive contributions in business. She also delivered a TEDx talk about how she empowers young women. She believes financial empowerment doesn’t begin by focusing on making money, but rather by focusing first on changing your mindset. Make Work Fun With Brandon Webb (162)

A frequent challenge and question that came up during my recent Accelerator was “How do you maintain your motivation when you don't immediately see results?” You need to make a habit of habit. You know why making the transition to working for yourself is so challenging? Because you are learning a whole new set of habits for doing your work and all at once! Changing one habit, let alone several at the same time, is super challenging. What's even harder is sticking to a new habit when you don't see immediate results.   When you start seeing the results of your habits you are more motivated to continue the habit, but how do you stay motivated long enough to start seeing results? Make a Habit of Habit I learned this mantra from Gretchen Rubin's book Better Than Before. It's all about adjusting, developing and strengthening your habits. Her most important piece of advice was to make a habit of habit. What does that mean? I'll explain using an example. Say you want to start running every morning to help you lose 10 pounds. You might be super excited and committed the first few days or even during the first week, but then distractions start tempting you from maintaining your new habit.  You skip one day because it's raining.  Skipped another day because you have to go into work early one morning for a meeting.  During the first few weeks you only lose 3 pounds. You start getting discouraged.  The results you expected aren't happening fast enough. The excuses to skip your morning run get less urgent until you stop running altogether just because you don't feel like doing it.  Instead of making a habit of running every morning. Make a habit of the habit of running every morning.  For example, if you normally allow 30 minutes for your run, but only have 15 minutes, then run for just 15 minutes.  If you only have 1 minute, than jog in place for that 1 minute. The point here is to not give up on the habit. Make it a part of your life every day, so it becomes part of your normal routine. Instead of seeking excuses not to run, you seek alternative options for sticking to your habit. Jerry Seinfeld referred to this method of habit development as “don’t break the chain”. He committed to writing at least one joke a day, no matter how good or bad it was. He made a habit of habit of writing jokes.  Why do this?  When you are developing a habit, it takes time to see the results. Some days you feel amazing about your habit and other times you have doubts. Making a habit of habit helps you ride through those moments of doubt, so you can stick to your habit long enough to start seeing results. Crazy as it sounds, while it might not feel like you are doing much by doing the minimum version of your habit, it actually strengths your overall habit by getting you to keep doing it! Try one of the following 3 exercises to make a habit of habit.  Exercise #1 Commit to the trigger action. What is the very first action you need to take to start your new habit? What’s the trigger? Dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp starts her gym habit early each morning by hailing a cab from her apartment in New York City.  She knows that once she gets a cab the momentum of her habit has begun. It’s the trigger. She's going to get dropped off at her gym, then walk in the door and start her exercise routine.  We often think of our habit as the new action we want to start in our lives.  We overlook the set of actions required to trigger that habit, which are actually part of the habit process.  If you want to start running, putting on your running shoes might be your trigger action. Exercise #2 5-minute version. Have a plan in place for when you don't have your desired amount of time to practice your habit.  I recommend identifying the 5-minute version of your habit.  Make a plan for how you can practice your habit if you only have 5 minutes.  No matter how busy life gets, you most likely can always find 5 minutes to maintain your habit. Exercise #3 Piggyback on existing habit. One of the most effective methods for starting and maintaining a new habit is by integrating it with one of your existing habits.  You are already doing something over and over, so tap into that momentum to spark your new habit. For example, a couple of years ago I wanted to get into the habit of putting face lotion with sunscreen on my face every morning to protect my skin, but I kept forgetting to do it. Then I realized, I could use my habit of brushing my teeth every morning to spark my new habit. As soon as I'm done with brushing my teeth, I immediately put on my face lotion. I view it as one habit now. Brushing my teeth becomes the cue from putting on my face lotion.  Pick Just One Habit One final recommendation, when you are starting a new business, pick one habit to build first.  Make a habit of just one of your habits. You will be more successfully committing to your new habits by building them one at a time. What makes you uniquely productive? Can you define your personal productivity? Understanding how you work naturally is the first step to becoming truly productive. Paul Berkovic believes in using productivity tools and methods that amplify your own unique personal productivity, rather than forcing yourself to change them. He’s is the co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of ScribblePost based in Sydney, Australia. Too many of us fall into the trap of doing what we think we are supposed to do, instead of finding out what we really want to do for work. Chirag Kulkarni managed to avoid that trap. He’s never held a traditional job. He didn’t finish college. Instead, life forced him to start figuring out what he was good at the age of 15. He discovered he was not so great at engineering like his father, but was much better at connecting with other people and marketing. This guy makes things happen. He’s started 3 companies and jokingly describes himself as a “distracted entrepreneur”.  I think he’s just really good at the art of pivoting which he explains in this episode. His latest company Insightfully was incubated in the MIT Media Lab. He writes for some of the most well-known publications like Fortune, Entrepreneur Magazine, Huffington Post and Inc. His most important lesson: if you want to be successful, you have to have the courage to be yourself. He also offered some great advice on forming partnerships and the ingredients necessary for putting together a founding team. He grew up in Detroit and currently calls Boston home.
