Rank #7: Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

Podcast cover
Read more

Today, Diane talks about negative self- talk and gives strategies and tips to help you overcome your inner critic. You need to select your thoughts the way you select your clothes. Disputing your negative self-talk means challenging the negative or unhelpful aspects. And doing this enables you to feel better and to respond to situations in a more helpful way.

Learning to dispute negative thoughts takes time and practice, but it’s worth the effort. Once you start looking at it, you’ll be surprised by how much of your thinking is inaccurate, exaggerated, or focused on the negatives of the situation.

Whenever you find yourself feeling depressed, angry, anxious or upset, use this as your signal to stop and become aware of your thoughts. Use your feelings as your cue to reflect on your thinking and follow the steps Diane details in today’s episode and learn how to say “STOP!” to the negative self-talk.

Financial health is part of Balanced Living For Busy Professionals!

Retirement and investment strategies, financial management, portfolio building and meeting your lifestyle goals are all topics on the show today, and Diane has an amazing guest. Winner of the 2015 PLUTUS award for Best Retirement Focused Blog/Podcast, Roger Whitney, The Retirement Answer Man himself is here.

As a Financial Advisor in 1991, Roger has witnessed first-hand the rise and fall of the “new economy” and the Dot-com bubble that ended in 2000. This experience solidified that financial management is about people, not money, and that they are served best by advisors that are fiduciaries to their clients, and have the heart of a teacher. In 2003 Roger left his job the largest private bank in the world at the time and, with two wonderful partners, established WWK Wealth Advisors. Today, they are a firm of 14 professionals managing over $200 million in assets.

  • You can’t give to others what’s not flowing through you.
  • Value yourself enough to self-honor yourself, take time to do the things that will help you.
  • Supercharge your life by integrating all the different parts from relationships, health and spirituality.
  • Practice constant self evaluation to see if you’re keeping your life in balance.
  • Take a productivity pause each morning for 10 minutes to evaluate your day.
  • Don’t focus on your thoughts but try to sit in between your thoughts.
  • Take regular breaks in the form of holidays or even meditation.
  • Spend at least 1 hour a day away from computers and digital interrupters.

You have everything you need inside of you, you just need to remove the struggles and obstacles.

These changes have to become a pattern, they can’t be done one as a fix-all cure.

Quotes:

"You can’t give to others what’s not flowing through you."

"Energy follows attention."

"Focus on one thing at a time."

"You have everything you need already inside of you."

"It’s difficult to hear the message until you’ve hit the bump in the road."

Rank #15: Setting And Maintaining Healthy Boundaries

Setting Boundaries In Your Life

What exactly does it mean to set and communicate healthy boundaries? Well, ask yourself what will you accept from others by way of the demands they make on your time and emotional energy. For most people, when someone asks something of them, their first response is to give in, to set that other person’s needs ahead of their own. Many of us have been taught from a young age to be “people pleasers.” One of the shortest, yet most difficult words for many people to say is “no.”

Setting boundaries is an important part of the process in making self-honoring choices for your own personal time – what difference does it make what your own personal priorities are if you allow other people’s priorities to override them, simply because you can’t tell that person “no” without the guilt?

To be able to set and communicate those boundaries, you will need to rely on your intuition. Your intuition often tells you when something being requested of you is not in harmony with your own self honoring choices, goals and priorities, but it takes a degree of trust and courage in that intuition to really listen to that inner voice – and to let it be heard by other people.

The bottom line is that your intuition can be used as a guide for setting boundaries, if you listen to it. Most of the time when people ask us to do something or make a request that negatively impacts our own plans, we get a queasy feeling. It feels bad or we know immediately that it is something that we don’t want to do. At this point you really are not factoring in what anybody else says or thinks.. With awareness of your internal compass, you can aspire to get to this set and protect your boundaries with practice.

Remember, making self-honoring choices, being true to your own priorities, and setting boundaries, all of these are necessary factors in living a healthier, happier high quality life.

What action steps can you take this week to set and communicate one boundary? Let us know your thoughts.
