She went on to a general surgery residency at UNC Chapel Hill. She then transitioned to St. Louis University (SLU) for Surgical Critical Care Fellowship as well as completion of her general surgery residency. Dr. Jerge began her trauma critical care practice in Phoenix, Arizona. She then assumed the role of Trauma Medical Director at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Seeking a new challenge in a supportive academic environment, Dr. Jerge joined the University of Kansas Department of Surgery in the fall of 2017 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery.  Dr. Jerge is double board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She has a strong passion for trauma and critical care. Her interests within the field are prehospital outreach and education, disaster preparedness, injury prevention, tactical medicine, and hemorrhage control. Dr. Jerge is an instructor in ATLS and tactical combat casualty care. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for Surgery in Trauma, the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, the International Public Safety Association, and the Association of Women Surgeons. She enjoys having strong bonds with patients and their families as they walk through challenging circumstances together. Since starting the Medic Up! Podcast it has amazed me what you get if you just ask. I have followed @redleader_standingby since about mid-2017 when he posted a photo essay to his Instagram that depicted an elective field amputation of an Afgan national in 2003 near the Pakistan border.  I was impressed by the detail in which he wrote his thoughts about the procedure and how he conducted it in a very resource-limited environment.  I was more impressed how he answered questioned posed by many of his IG followers about the medicine. If there is one thing I can attest, it’s that most special forces medics are humble and nerd out over medicine and jump at the chance to pass on lessons hard  learned  on the battlefield or forward clinic. Mr. Martel also has a way with words. He’s a natural writer and and seems to write the most perfect prose wright when you need to hear it. So, one day I sent a DM through the GRAM and the next thing I know I’m on the phone and pressing record. Give this episode a listen and pay close attention to his MINDSET. The episode goes off the rails at the end because I timed the interview poorly and had to leave abruptly as I noticed the time was creeping up on me and I had a previous teaching commitment oddly enough, to teach a Stop the Bleed course to local high school faculty. So, hopefully we’ll pick up where we left off if I can catch Tyr before he jetsets off to his next adventure. Medic Up! Episode #7 –  Aaron Dix – Greenwood Nursing Home Fire This week I’ve got my good friend,  Aaron Dix on the podcast. Aaron comes to the Upstate of South Carolina by way of Hartford Ct. We have very similar experiences in EMS from being brought up through the Exploring program to having solid mentors at very early points in our EMS careers. We share a lot of the same viewpoints and share the same solid knowledge of 80’s &amp; 90’s rap beefs. Aaron has written several articles for EMS1 that center around the topic of simulation in healthcare. He is currently the Director of Simulation Education at the Greenville Health System Simulation Center. He is a regular speaker at state and National conferences on many topics. He also puts on one helluva 2-day prehospital medicine conference every year. Check out the link below to the Swamp Rabbit Prehospital Medicine Conference. Aaron is still heavily involved in prehospital care as a paramedic and as a firefighter in the Upstate of South Carolina. He does / has done a lot of other stuff too. Too much to type. He’s a part time ninja. He was the back-up pilot of one of the Voltron lion robots in the 80’s. He’s Chuck Norris’s stunt double in Walker Texas Ranger; the list goes on-and-on but I digress. At approximately 0240 on a freezing February 26th morning, fire was reported at the Greenwood Nursing Home in Hartford Ct. It would later be concluded that a 23-year-old resident who suffered from mental illness set her bed sheets on fire while playing with a butane lighter that another resident gave her earlier that day. The resulting fire and toxic smoke killed 10 residents that morning and 6 others died within the week following the fire. Aaron was the Medical Incident Commander for this job on that 6°F morning. Joe Connelly Bio He was born in St Clare’s Hospital in Hells Kitchen Manhattan, the same hospital his mother worked for, and went to nursing school at, and where his parents met, at a dance in the basement. He grew up in Queens, and then upstate in Orange County. After 12 years of Catholic school he finished third in his class, and won a full scholarship to Colgate University. He was the first person in his family to go to college, and three years later, became the first to drop out. He traveled around the country, different jobs in different places. He was tending bar in Dublin when he read a book called The Razor’s Edge, by Somerset Maugham, about an ambulance driver in World War I. He decided then to go back to New York City, and join EMS. He wanted to help people, make a difference, but more important than that, he wanted to see those big ideas of life and death he figured every writer needed to understand. He worked up in Harlem first. The system was overwhelmed then, ambulances broken, angry and overworked labor, patients waiting hours for help. In 1987 everyone got a medal just for coming to work. During one organized sickout he went looking for a job somewhere else, and found it with the same hospital he was born at, driving an ambulance in the old Times Square, the Deuce. He started writing the stories he was seeing, in the first person, but there was another side of him, the paramedic side, that was doing everything he could to wall those scenes off. It was the height of the AIDS epidemic, the Crack epidemic. There were 2000 homicides in NYC in 1992, and he was driving to someone shot almost every night. He began taking writing classes at Columbia, and gradually the book took form. In writing about a fictional character, Frank Pierce, a man with no walls, no defenses, he was finally able to get back to the dark places he’d walled himself off from. One of his teachers, Colin Harrison, the editor of Harper’s, got him an agent. One of his classmates, Jenny Minton, was Sonny Mehta’s assistant at Knopf, and she kept pushing the book until he bought it. She became his editor. Three months after the book came out he was high up in the offices of a producer for Paramount, speaking about how great Tom Cruise would be as Frank. He quit his job that day.  A few months after that he was working with Paul Schrader on the screenplay, and just a few months after the book was published by Knopf, in 1998, he was on the movie set in Hell’s Kitchen, a consultant on the movie being shot in the same streets he’d worked for 12 years. He started a second novel, Crumbtown, about a man who has his life turned into a movie, a bank robber, who steals his life back again, but he was having such a great time being a successful young writer that he did very little writing. He ended up at a writing colony in the Adirondacks, Blue Mountain Center, and worked well in the mountains, and moved his family there shortly after. Two months later he watched the towers fall at 9/11, knowing his friends were all there. He joined his local ambulance squad that week, and got his paramedic license back, and realized how much he missed working with his hands, the simple act of helping. A year later he was back on the streets of New York, working for the same hospital. In 2005 an earthquake hit Pakistan, killing 60,000 people. A medic friend had been to Katrina a few months before, and said he was forming a relief group. They were supposed to help out in a clinic in the Jelum Valley, but the Navy helicopter pilot they bribed in Islamabad ended up dropping them miles further upriver, in an area completely cut off from help. They hiked through Kashmir, caring for thousands of injured. A crew from Sixty Minutes found them in a small village near the Indian border, and the resulting segment was shown and repeated and won an emmy. Hundreds of thousands of dollars poured in. The group had to come up with a name, and called themselves NYC Medics.  Since then, he’s been to disasters around the world: earthquakes floods and monsoons. This year the World Health Organization asked the group to help in a war zone, and in February he spent a month operating a Trauma Stabilization Point on the front lines of the battle for Mosul.  He runs the local ambulance squad in North Creek, where he’s been volunteering and working as a paramedic for the past 15 years. It’s a different experience helping your neighbors, people you know, so far from the hospital and the social services available in the rest of the state. This week is the final week of the “Recent Paramedic Graduate” or whatever I’ve been calling it week-to-week series. I hope you’ve enjoyed listening to these guys and girls as they shared their experiences from medic school and their first few years in the career field. Shawn stopped by the Medic Up! studios to talk about being a “Baby Medic” who actually has a paramedic card that he has to be  careful with because the ink is still wet. This guy literally walked down the aisle to graduate 100 days prior to recording this episode. This is probably one of  my favorite episodes to date which is mostly due to the openness and sincerity that Shawn brought to the episode. I have no doubt that Shawn is going to get a lot out of his career choice because it is evident how much he is willing t put into it. Medic Up! Episode #8 – Clardy &amp; Me: 2 Medics Talking – Part 1 EXACTLY 366 days since the last episode was uploaded!!! Welcome back everyone to the Medic Up! Podcast. We took a little break there for a minute. A “hiatus” if you will. Just over 365 days since the last episode was posted. But guess what  we’re back. I’d like to take a second to thank all of the local boys and girls who, over this past year, have diligently asked, “When are you going to post another episode?” Also the messages via text and social media I’ve gotten as well. Thank you all for the support, encouragement and your patience!   So, if you’ve just been filling the hours listening to other podcasts over this last year, just waiting with baited breath for the next episode of Medic Up! to show up on your podcast app, well, you dont have to wait any longer because here it is!   My good friend, “Clardy” is sitting across from me today and I’ve been waiting a long time for this to happen. We planned this over a year ago but you know it goes;  people get busy, life gets in the way and before you know it, it’s 1 year later. But, here we are and this is happening now. I struggled with a theme for this but deep down I think I knew where we would end up. This is just 2 medics talking. Just like what happens when you put 2 or medics in station/post/ambulance/squad etc. They start shootin’ the shit, telling war stories, reminiscing about how it “used to be” how they came up and what keeps them going. THAT my friends is this episode.   There are a lot of names used in this episode. So many, I probably need to get release forms. I kinda wimped out and edited out a few last names only because I really didn’t know how each person would react. It’s just 2 medics talking. Talking about people, the past, the future the good the bad coming up in the job, where the job is going. We’ll talk about Clardy’s gameballs and a few other things that crossed our minds. Today on the Medic Up! Podcast I have Christian and Samuel Adams who are  identical twin brothers and that wrote a book titled:  “Life and Death Matters: Professionalism and Decision-Making for the First Responder; How paramedics act decisively in the chaos of Prehospital emergency Medicine. Ep. 17 Samuel & Christian Adams: Authors of “Life and Death Matters: Professionalism and Decision-Making for the First Responder; How Paramedics Act Decisively in the Chaos of Prehospital Emergency Medicine”

Kirstin (not Kristen) is the EMS Veteran of the group having just completed her 5th year in EMS practice. She sits down to share some insights of being a very young student  paramedic with very little life experience, progressing through paramedic school and being a new medic in a busy system. She started EMT school, taking the “Zero – to – Hero” route right out of high school and becoming a medic at 20 years old; effectively putting her in a position where she can administer narcotics but not buy a drink at the bar! We talk about mentors, waiting 5 years to cardiovert a patient in the field, goal setting to  progress though an EMS career and that stomach butterfly / flip-flop thing when the tones drop. If you’ve been listening to the series I think you can easily draw parallels between each of these “new” medics who shared similar experiences coming up in EMS. I think you can hear the difference between the 2 year medic vs the 5 year medic.  In the next and final episode in the “Recent Paramedic Graduate” series we will hear from a brand – spanking – new paramedic in the middle of his survival year. O.B. stopped by this week to hang out for close to an hour. He’s a 2015 graduate but he just recently got his NRP certification. O.B. is the picture of persistence! He didn’t give up, he put in the work and he earned that disco patch statistically beating the odds and I couldn’t be more proud of this dude! Alex has a very powerful story about her personal battle with addiction,subsequent recovery and what she is doing to help others battling addiction.  We talk about her experience filming the Nightwatch Nation series and some other projects that she’s working on. “Candid,” “Powerful,” and“Inspiring” are 3 words I would use to describe this episode. After a few years as an EMT, Alex decided to take the next step and become a paramedic, and in 2017, through literal blood, sweat and tears, Empress promoted Alex to Field Operations Lieutenant. Alex is the only female field supervisor amongst a team of 10 men, and she is proudly known to her team and the employees at Empress as the resident mom. Along with her supervisory duties in the field, Alex is heavily involved in Yonkers’s H.E.A.R.T program which helps to combat the Heroin and Opioid Crisis by providing support and rehabilitation for those battling addiction. Alex has also been instrumental in getting Empress’s Community Paramedic Program up and running. She supervises a team that works in tandem with the local hospitals to keep recently discharged patients from returning. Through clinical, emotional and social assessments the program is able to teach people about the best way to manage their diagnosis and in turn their lives.
