We continue KISSmas in July with a trip back to 1975 in Cadillac, Michigan! Bill Barnett was a member of the Cadillac High School football team and was at ground zero for one of the most unique moments in KISStory as KISS visited Cadillac, Michigan.If you're unfamiliar with the history, we'll quickly bring you up to speed. The 1974 Cadillac High School football team was in a slump. To motivate the team, assistant coach Jim Neff started playing KISS music in the weight room and locker room. To take things a step further, defensive formations were named after KISS songs. This unique approach would go on to fire up the squad and result in the team winning a title. Realizing what a unique story this was, Coach Neff contacted KISS' management office and told them the story. The band and management seized on the unique story and agreed to come to Cadillac in 1975 during the school's homecoming week. The band would perform a concert in the school gym, meet with city leaders the next morning and finish things off being featured in the homecoming parade downtown.In this discussion, Bill Barnett shares his memories of being a player on that KISStoric football team, his memories of Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter, and much more. The story of how the whole event came together has to be heard to be believed as well as the legacy it's created. This week Toby Wright joins us for an in-depth discussion on the making of the Alice in Chains classic 'Jar of Flies.' Released on January 25, 1994, through Columbia Records, it is the first EP in music history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the first week sales exceeding 141,000 copies in the United States. Recorded over the course of a week at the London Bridge Studio in Seattle, it was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1995;  Best Recording Package and  Best Hard Rock Performance for "I Stay Away". It has been certified triple-platinum by the  RIAA, selling 4 million copies worldwide.  Jar of Flies In this long-form talk, Toby recounts his memories of getting the phone call from Jerry Cantrell to book studio time once the band got off tour. Assuring Toby that plenty of material was ready to go, Cantrell revealed later that no material had been written as of day 1 of recording. What happened next can only be described as catching lightning in a bottle (or a jar). Wright and the members of the band hunkered down for 14+ hour days and churned out 7 amazing songs in 7 days. With a 10 day window for mixing, Jar of Flies took form from conception to finished product in just 20 days. Additionally, Toby shares his memories of the creation of the songs as well as production techniques used for creating the timeless sound of Jar of Flies. When preparing for this year's KISSMAS in JULY episodes, we wanted to dig in and talk to some people that were first-hand witnesses to KISS' rise to stardom. This week's guest not only witnessed it; he helped make it happen.   Peter Oreckinto, or "Moose" as he's known in KISS circles, was brought into the KISS family very early in the band's history. Having a background in theater, as well as pyrotechnics, Oreckinto was tailor-made for his job as a member of the early KISS road crew; and what a crew it is.  Setting up and tearing down a KISS show these days is a task of military precision, with a military-sized crew handling the job. But back in the early days of the band, the KISS road crew were a tight-knit group of guys that worked tirelessly to help assemble the ladder that the band would use to go on to bigger success. The amount of blood, sweat, and tears that went into working for KISS in those early days is not to be underestimated.    In this discussion, Oreckinto shares what it was like barnstorming the country with a group of 4 struggling New Yorkers that were out to see the world for the first time. It was doubly hard for KISS' crew in those days due to the ridicule they would endure from rival crews as well as the attitudes they would run into due to KISS routinely blowing the headliners off the stage with their wild stage shows.  It's well-known that Bill Aucoin financed a lot of KISS' early road expenses on his American Express cards. What you may not know is there were other forms of financing for the band in those early days; and not at all in the cleanest sense. During this conversation, Oreckinto reveals some "family" ties to the KISS organization and how not keeping a certain promise led to some near-death incidents that threatened the lives of the band and their crew.   KISS' early tours were scatter-shot affairs that were known as "dart board" tours due to the crazy nature of travel routing. In this discussion, Oreckinto shares what it was like to cover thousands of miles between gigs, crisscrossing the United States on very little money, and even less sleep.  KISS also had to tour with a wide variety of acts for different reasons including being thrown off tours for upstaging the headline acts. During our Conversation, Moose shares his recollections of the numerous acts that KISS toured with; including some heated exchanges with acts such as Black Sabbath and Lyrnyrd Skynyrd and even a knife fight with members of Aerosmith's road crew.   We only get to scratch the surface in this discussion but there's plenty of interesting conversation about the early days of the Hottest Band in the Land. Vinnie Vincent Reflects on Invasion Debut - Albums Unleashed ep318

If there is one band that truly defines having a "good time" it's Van Halen. Formed in 1974 in suburban Pasadena, California, brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen were joined by bassist Michael Anthony and vocalist David Lee Roth and set forth in creating music history.   Blessed with other-worldly talent, Eddie quickly redefined the art of hard rock guitar playing via two-handed tapping and whammy bar dive bombs. Alex's drumming, rooted in the influences of Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich, was an aggressive undercurrent to the band's sound. Michael Anthony's rock solid bass playing was only overshadowed by his angelic backing vocals. And David Lee Roth's ringmaster routine; featuring high jumps and other assorted acrobatics, rounded out a band that would marry classical influences with Harlem soul to create the combustible mix that was the Roth-Era of Van Halen.  After 1984, it seemed that the spirit of original Van Halen was lost forever with Roth embarking on a long solo career and the brothers starting to work with Sammy Hagar. But, time does tend to heal all wounds and after many years of assorted will-they-won't-they drama, the original Van Halen (sans Michael Anthony) reconvened in 2006 and released new material in 2012. We're back with the second installment of our Albums Unleashed series and it's been a long time coming but we truly believe it's been worth the wait.    John Corabi joins Aaron and Chris this week to discuss what is arguably one of the most underrated albums of all-time; Motley Crue's self-titled album from 1994. In part one of this discussion, John helps us lay the groundwork into the story of the album with stories of his audition process, pre-production for the album, and the maddening-yet-rewarding experience of working with legendary producer Bob Rock.   John also shares revelations into the decision-making process of Motley Crue at that time; choosing to abandon the previously-blazed path of lyrics about rock and roll decadence and focus on delivering an album that's powerful not only musically but thought-provoking in its exploration of dark social commenatary. Albums Unleashed - Slave to the Grind Ep171

This week Aaron and Chris launch the first installment of a brand new series for the Decibel Geek podcast with Albums Unleashed. The stories behind the songs, circumstances, and creative process from a major player in an album's creation. And to start things off, we're covering Alice Cooper's DaDa album with special guest Dick Wagner.    Released in 1983, DaDa was, for all intents and purposes, dead on arrival due to being the final album in Cooper's contract with Warner Brothers as well as the out-of-the-box style of songs. Part art-rock, part esoteric/theatrical concept, DaDa's synthesizer-infused production combined with a healthy amount of humor crossed with dark subject matter left 1983 audiences confused; and they weren't the only ones.   The early 80's were a self-professed "blackout" period for Alice Cooper with the rocker going as far as saying that he barely even remembers the songwriting process or production of this album. Cooper's lack of recollection has led many die-hard Cooper fans to create their own theories as to the concept behind DaDa. Guitarist/composer Dick Wagner, a longtime collaborator of Alice's, was the principal songwriter on this album and was kind enough, while in Nashville in May of 2014, to sit down with Aaron and Chris to discuss the entire album track by track and memory by memory.    In this discussion, Wagner shares his memories of the difficult  that led to getting Alice to come to ESP Studios in Buttonville Ontario from his Pheonix home to join he and producer Bob Ezrin in the making of DaDa. Alice's alcohol abuse hit record highs during this period and Dick shares his recollections of their songwriting and recording process that led to the songs on the album.   From the creepy title track's intro that features producer Ezrin aping a psychiatrist talking to Cooper as DaDa's featured character over a bed of strange reverberating sounds and the voice of a child calling out for its father to the dark tale of self-destructive realization that is album closer 'Pass the Gun Around,' Wagner tells the story of the album's basic concept. This week Aaron and Chris launch the first installment of a brand new series for the Decibel Geek podcast with Albums Unleashed. The stories behind the songs, circumstances, and creative process from a major player in an album's creation. And to start things off, we're covering <a href="http://www.alicecooper.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alice Cooper</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DaDa" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">DaDa</a> album with special guest <a href="http://www.wagnermusic.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dick Wagner</a>. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9UOkdUdgLNY/U12cKF8mcSI/AAAAAAAAC88/a8_Nfn_h5WY/s1600/AlbumsUnleasedDadaPromo.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> Released in 1983, DaDa was, for all intents and purposes, dead on arrival due to being the final album in Cooper's contract with Warner Brothers as well as the out-of-the-box style of songs. Part art-rock, part esoteric/theatrical concept, DaDa's synthesizer-infused production combined with a healthy amount of humor crossed with dark subject matter left 1983 audiences confused; and they weren't the only ones. The early 80's were a self-professed "blackout" period for Alice Cooper with the rocker going as far as saying that he barely even remembers the songwriting process or production of this album. Cooper's lack of recollection has led many die-hard Cooper fans to create their own theories as to the concept behind DaDa. Guitarist/composer Dick Wagner, a longtime collaborator of Alice's, was the principal songwriter on this album and was kind enough, while in Nashville in May of 2014, to sit down with Aaron and Chris to discuss the entire album track by track and memory by memory. <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PQwmz44joD0/U12dewgCDJI/AAAAAAAAC9I/yjLS4Mvfzb4/s1600/dali2.jpg" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> In this discussion, Wagner shares his memories of the difficult  that led to getting Alice to come to <a href="http://johnjones.com/esp/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ESP Studios in Buttonville Ontario</a> from his Pheonix home to join he and producer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ezrin" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bob Ezrin</a> in the making of DaDa. Alice's alcohol abuse hit record highs during this period and Dick shares his recollections of their songwriting and recording process that led to the songs on the album. A fantastic fan-created theory of the albums concept and storyline was written online in 2008 for <a href="http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/compact_discs/alice_cooper/dada/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ultimate-Guitar.com</a> by a user named <a href="http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/madpaperboy89/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">madpaperboy89</a>. After two weeks of discussing a British Invasion, we decided this week to discuss another kind of British Invasion and Chris and Aaron are joined by Tim Henderson from Bravewords.com for an in-depth discussion of the entire catalog of heavy metal legends Judas Priest.    In this long-form discussion, Aaron, Chris and Tim discuss the recorded output of the iconic Judas Priest catalog; starting with 1974's Rocka Rolla and chronicling each album through 2008's Nostradamus and their hopes for the upcoming album currently being created.   There's a lot of twists and turns in this conversation with each host bringing a different perspective due to differing levels of Priest fandom. Episode 126 - Judas Priest Discussion

Sometimes going back on your word can be a good thing......   This week we present you with the 5th installment of our Vinnie Vincent Special. Joining us for this discussion is drummer Andre Labelle of The Sky. Andre was tapped by Vinnie to drum on the still-not-officially released album Guitars from Hell that was recorded over a period of 1989 through 1992. In this discussion you'll hear the whole story of how the project was started, the interesting ways that Vinnie would decide on equipment,recording techniques, and the circumstances that led to the album being shelved.    During this discussion Andre also shares some interesting insight into Vinnie's brief reconciliation with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and his work with them on the then-in-production 'Revenge' album as well as Vinnie's influence going beyond the songwriting for the album.   Guitars from Hell has leaked in-part online over the past few years in the form of rough demos; many of which feature Vincent re-recording all the tracks using a drum machine in Labelle's place. In this discussion, Andre shares his feelings about this and confirms that more than the 8 leaked songs do exist.  Fan-created artwork   Along with Andre, the Guitars from Hell album featured the return of original Vinnie Vincent Invasion vocalist  and current Sky front man Robert Fleischman. During this talk, Andre shares the working dynamic between the vocalist and guitarist and how things didn't always go very smoothly yet still yielded an incredible technical performance out of all parties.   The Sky recently released their second full-length album, 'Majestic.' The band is rounded out by bassist Steve Barber and guitarist Ryan Lake. We pick up Albums Unleashed - Motley Crue with John Corabi part 2 with a discussion of Hooligan's Holiday. From there John guides us through the creative process for each song on the album; highlighting the motives for the lyrics as well as some surprising revelations about the origin of some of the music on the album and a great story about Glenn Hughes' involvement in the recording for Misunderstood.    Other topics touched on in this long-form discussion include the much-talked-about MTV interview that strained the network's relationship with the band, the possibility of the band changing their name during the making of the album, one song that was re-written for the album five times and another that was almost torpedoed by record company politics; leading to a fight from the band for its inclusion. With so much happening in the KISS world, we thought we'd return with a KISS Edition of New Noize! In this hour-plus talk, we get down to our thoughts on the nuts and bolts of the KISS world in 2019; and boy is it active! KISS kicked off the beginning of their End of the Road tour in Vancouver this week. Specifically, the stage is massive and is getting lots of attention. Additionally, the specter of backing tracks being piped through the sound system is being discussed. Is the new KISS show live or is it Memorex? We'll dissect and give our thoughts. Also of note, on the eve of the new KISS tour, Ace Frehley took aim at his former band mates; blasting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley with some serious allegations. Have Paul and Gene cost Ace millions of dollars due to badmouthing him? Did Gene really make a pass at Ace's girlfriend? Consequently, did Ace even actually write the salvo that was launched via his social media? We'll examine and give you our take.  New Noize   Finally, the Vinnie Vincent saga takes yet another major twist. After lots of silence from Vinnie, the promoter, as well as Rocketown, the two shows scheduled in Nashville for February 8th and 9th have been cancelled by the promoter. According to him, Vinnie backed out of the shows. Subsequently, Vinnie (and his attorney) released statements essentially saying he backed out of the shows due to non-payment. Either way, the remaining fans of Mr. Vincent are, once again, left disappointed. Does this pay out in court? Will the ticket buyers get their refunds? Will there be another concert scheduled and who would trust that the show will happen? We give our take on this circus. As a result of all of this, there's no shortage of drama within the KISS Kamp. There's been speculation that the band would eventually launch a reality show. This begs the question, are we living through it right now? In August of 1992, Warrant were flying high on the success of the mega-huge Cherry Pie album. While the success was nice, the band wanted to go in a tougher direction with their next album. Enlisting super producer Michael Wagener, the band headed into the studio in 1991 to lay down tracks for what would become Dog Eat Dog. Filled with big, crunchy riffs on songs such as Machine Gun, Hole in My Wall, and Inside Out, experiments in darker subject matter on tunes like Bitter Pill and Andy Warhol was Right as well as melodic tunes that could bring the house down such as Let it Rain and Sad Theresa, Dog Eat Dog was poised to be one of the all-time classic rock albums. The only problem was, a scraggly trio from Seattle named Nirvana was taking the world by storm literally days before the release of Dog Eat Dog. Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan and producer Michael Wagener join the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Skid Row. Recorded in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Skid Row was released January 24, 1989 on Atlantic Records. Thanks to strong response to singles such as 'Youth Gone Wild,' '18 and Life,' 'Piece of Me,' and the ballad 'I Remember You,' Skid Row would go on to sell over 5 million copies. This self-titled debut featured the talents of bassist Bolan, drummer Rob Affuso, singer Sebastian Bach, and the twin-guitar assault of Scotti Hill and Dave "The Snake" Sabo. In this nearly two hour discussion, Bolan discusses the early days of Skid Row, including a period pre-Bach that featured vocalist Matt Fallon. Fallon would unfortunately go down in infamy as someone that lost out on stardom not once but twice as he was jettisoned from jobs with Anthrax and Skid Row. Bolan also shares the circumstances that led to Bach's hiring at the young age of 19. Michael Wagener shares his memories of how he was brought on board to produce the album by A&amp;R man Jason Flom and Skid Row manager Doc McGhee. Producer and longtime friend of Ace Frehley, Crazy Joe Renda stops by to share Ace Stories about everyone's favorite spaceman. Joe first came to prominence in KISS fan circles with the novelty song, 'Eugene' released under the moniker of Crazy Joe &amp; The Variable Speed Band. The song would go down in KISSTORY as Ace Frehley's first musical project outside of the band as he's a co-writer and co-producer of the song. Joe also founded and ran North Lake Sound studio in White Plains, NY along with fellow songwriter Chip Taylor (known for ' Wild Thing', 'Rock Soldiers' and 'Angel of the Morning'). Joe is also the producer for prank phone call legends The Jerky Boys.    Ace Stories with Crazy Joe Renda    In this long-form conversation, Joe shares some incredible stories of hanging out with Ace Frehley and being around the business of KISS. Stories of the interpersonal relationships between Ace and the other members of the band are shared including the dynamic between the "2 camps" of Simmons and Stanley vs Criss and Frehley. Also included are Joe's recollections of Ace's decision to quit KISS and how Gene Simmons pleaded with Joe to attempt to keep Ace on as a member of the band. Other stories involving a testy meeting between Peter Criss and Eric Carr, loads of stories of Ace truly being a rock  n' roll wild man and so much more including the story of how 'Eugene' was created and how it connects to KISS (not in the way you would expect).
