Each year North American evangelicals spend millions of dollars on short-term missions trips. A recent listener of the podcast asked whether or not this is appropriate? Would it be better for us to simply pool our monies and send it overseas? In essence, short-term missions can be very effective, if done right. However, most short-term missions are done wrong. They often have the wrong goals and wrong peoples in mind. This makes much of the short-term missions activity feels very wasteful, inefficient, and even harmful. Short-term missions can be very helpful if we partner with local ministries and strategic come along side of them to help expand their pre-existing ministry and their gospel influence. Kenny also uses this question as the opportunity to discuss his approach to global missions and challenges the audience to engage in global missions. Each Christian has a part to play in global missions. As pastor and author John Piper states, “There are only three kinds of Christians when it comes to world missions: zealous goers, zealous senders, and disobedient. 286: What Does it Mean to be ‘Saved’?

People often ask, “Why did God allow Adam to sin in the first place?” Many have wondered, if God knew that sin would cause such devastation to humanity, and such eternal consequences, then why did God did allow it happen? Couldn’t he have stopped it? Couldn’t God had created Adam without the ability to sin? This is the same line of thinking that came from a regular listener by email, and Kenny tackles this topic herein this episode. This is a tough question. It’s sobering in a lot of ways. But ultimately, the answer to this type of question reminds us of God’s perfect sovereignty. In this episode Kenny explains how the glory of God and the proclamation of his supremacy are the most important elements of the Christian life. Therefore, if God’s glory could have been known to its fullest in a world with no sin, then it is likely that God would have stopped sin. However, the very fact that God has allowed sin, clearly shows us that the glory of God, and the proclamation of Christ’s supremacy over all things, is shown most in the midst of a world with sin (otherwise, God would have prevented it altogether). The most frequent questions that Kenny gets (both from podcast listeners as well as from some of the young people that he has mentored) are typically related to the topic of sex. One frequently asked question is about oral sex. Is it wrong? In this episode, Kenny clearly explains that oral sex can often be viewed as even more intimate than intercourse in the minds of some people. There are even some stats that show that young people are more likely to engage with intercourse before they engage with oral sex, because they view oral sex as being even more sensitive than intercourse. Kenny makes clear that all sexual relations ought to be kept between a man and his wife, between the bounds of covenant marriage. If you are not married, then oral sex is sinful. But within the bounds of marriage, between a man and his wife, the Bible never prohibits oral sex. In fact, there are moments in the the Bible where oral sex seems to be celebrated. Lastly, Kenny then outlines several thoughts and elements of this topic that every married couple ought to consider before indulging in the act of oral sex.

That verse that is famously quoted is Jeremiah 29:11, often used as a proof-text to demonstrate that God always wants us to prosper. In this episode, Kenny answers the question with several thoughts: 1- Every human deserves to die, so decreeing Isaac’s death would not be unjust. 2- We are not entitled to anything at all; Isaac was not entitled to life, therefore God can take away Isaac’s life if He sees fit to do so. 3- God has the right to do whatever He pleases with His own creation, at any times, for the expansion of His own glory and His own pleasure. 4- The point of the story is the foreshadowing of the cross; we are “Isaac” and Jesus is the “ram in the thicket” that is ultimately killed. This Bible narrative was orchestrated by God to illustrate the Gospel.

In doing this, Evangelicals have taken the spotlight off of the proper angle of this issue. As stated in the previous episode, there are two primary frameworks used by most Protestants today to interpret Scripture: Covenant Theology and Dispensationalism. Dispensationalism considers Biblical history as divided deliberately by God into specific time periods (dispensations). In each dispensation, God governs and relates to his people in different ways. According to dispensationalists, each time period is thus administered in a certain way, and humanity is held responsible as a steward during that time. In this episode, Kenny highlights the key differences between the two theological systems. Then Kenny explains a few examples of how dispensationalism would interpret certain passages of Scripture versus how most theologians would interpret those same passages by taking a covenantal approach.
