Also talk more on NSPCC’s plans to add to online safety.    Peter was  also reflective on the organisation’s campaigning role.  What risks and challenges are increasing due to the need for more public attention and urgency as well as more extensive resources.? Sir Peter Wanless. 10 tears at NSPCC where he has been the Chief Executive since June 2013. The charity’s longstanding purpose is to prevent cruelty to children, something it seeks to achieve through a mixture of service delivery, research, influencing, advocacy and campaigning. Among the NSPCC’s http://nspcc.org.uk direct services are Childline, 0800 1111  a confidential helpline for any young person with nowhere else to turn, the NSPCC Helpline help@nspcc.org.uk for any adult with a worry or concern about a child, the Child protection in Sport Unit and a network of service centres across the UK focused particularly on abuse and neglect in the early years and child sexual abuse. The NSPCC has been particularly prominent of late in building the child protection case for online regulation of social media services.Peter was previously Chief Executive of what was then the Big Lottery Fund and a Director at the Department for Education between 1998 and 2008. He is on the Boards of Somerset County Cricket Club and the Government’s National Leadership Centre. He received a knighthood in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List for services to children and charity. We talk of the priorities driving the NSPCC in these challenging times. Supporting young people first, keeping staff and volunteers safe and well and looking to maintain the donation base to continue vital work. Peter outlines the strategic position of the charity and the constant focus on adapting to threats and challenges to young people. Their work in schools, their combatting of online risks and the increasing workload on their well established Childline service. Training and research are cornerstones of the charity and his job in overseeing all aspects include partnerships with all colleague services, both statutory and voluntary. Adam Zarnowski currently serves as the Open-Source Intelligence and Traffiking Investigations Manager for the Anti-Human Trafficking Intelligence Initiative (www.followmoneyfightslavery.org). He is a former United States federal officer and holds a master’s degree in Investigations specializing in Digital Forensics alongside a graduate certificate in Trafficking in Persons Investigations from the University of New Haven. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Kentucky University. Adam has dedicated his life to eradicating slavery from an early age. While serving as an investigator, Adam also spends much of his free time researching the sociocultural landscape to better understand how groups and individuals become vulnerable to trafficking and slavery in the first place. He has published a number of articles detailing his work and has additionally spoken at the Hague in the Netherlands as to his findings investigating war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. We talk of the enormity of the task and the dedication of hundreds of people working to combat traffiking and slavery in all its forms. Adam has also been consistantly academically interested in what causes this criminal behaviour in individuals and fuels this chronic cancer in our communities. As far as the general public is concerned the clear message is ‘ if you see something, say something’ . Grantown Remakery is a small but important charity which I talked about, a year or so ago, with George Livingstone as the <a href="http://guest.It" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">guest.It</a> seemed a good idea to see how they weathered the pandemic and did George have views on how the wider community could support the causes and challenges they saw. It is one of dozens of charities created to improve the quality of life of several vulnerable groups, whose chances in life are threatened by no fault of their own and an underfunded statutory provision. They strive to help balance inequality and create opportunity. Safeguarding in education has always been a high priority as young peoplle sometimes spend more waking hours at school than at home. School staff of all disciplines, are part of the ‘front line’ when it comes to safeguarding. Ann Marie is an Independent social worker. She qualified in 1996 as a social worker and worked in a generic children &amp; families neighbourhood team. She took part in a pilot project in 1999 based in a school as a social worker for four years.  Ann Marie completed her ‘practice teaching’ qualification and went on to manage a team of school based social workers for a local authority. This role evolved and included being the ‘safeguarding advisor’ for schools and providing child protection training and consultancy to colleagues in education. She set up half termly ‘safeguarding network meetings’ for schools and invited colleagues from children social care, health and the voluntary sector. In this role she was the bridge between children social care and education colleagues. This role expanded and Ann Marie supported schools with the ‘Common Assessment Framework’ in 2004 and delivered the training and support. She worked as a LSCB trainer and sub member and supported children &amp; families social workers in working with schools and was the LADO (local authority designated officer) in the education department and supported the Local Authority Head of education and schools with allegations against staff. She took part in strategy meetings focusing on the safeguarding of the child. In 2010 she became independent and continued social work locum roles in early years, education and youth justice over five years. Ann Marie was invited to write a chapter in a book ‘Becoming a social worker’, Vivienne. E Cree, 2003, Routledge and wrote about her school based social worker role. She continues to write and contributes regular articles to various journals. Ann Marie is  passionate about safeguarding and promoting the well being of children and speaks regularly at International and National conferences. This Podcast features Jon Brown as my guest. We talk of developments in child protection, the work of the NSPCC  and the future strategy and digital importance in safeguarding children. Since April 2010 he has been in post as Head of Strategy and Development with the NSPCC helping to take forward the new organisational strategy in relation to sexual abuse. Jon is responsible for the design and commissioning of service, policy and research development. In January 2012 he also took responsibility for leading the NSPCCs work with disabled children. Jon is a qualified Social Worker with a Masters in Social Policy from the LSE. During his career as a Probation Officer and Social Worker he has been responsible for setting up and managing a range of sexual abuse services ranging from therapeutic services for child victims, services for children and young people with sexually harmful behaviour and services for adult sex offenders and he reflects on the work of the NSPCC. Between 2003-07 Jon was Chair of NOTA, the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abusers and remains on the National Executive Committee. He is also a Trustee of the Loudoun Trust which exists to promote evidence based research and practice in the field of sexual aggression against children, he is a Board member of eNACSO (European NGO Alliance for Child Safety Online) and he is a peer reviewer for the Economic and Social Research Council. This programme is about the image of social work and social care. It describes an exiting new initiative in media training and has an interview with the founder of the Social Worker of the Year Awards. Beverly Williams MBE Beverley had worked in the social housing sector for 23 years when, the age of forty, she became a foster carer and first came in touch with social workers. A mother of three, she qualified with a Diploma in Social Work in 2004. She works as an independent social worker and from 2006 she launched the Social Worker of the Year Awards in her spare time. Beverley continues to work  as an experienced qualified social worker and has practiced in various local authorities.  She enjoys the diversity and challenges that she faces during her time spent at any local authority. She has no plans of giving up her full-time career, but is ecstatically happy and proud that the Social Work Awards has taken her dream and made it a reality. She gives special thanks to Sanctuary Social Care for their commitment and contribution since 2010. I’ve included an interview from The Media Show on the BBC for you. We discuss adoption and surrounding topics as well as, in my view, the hugely important subject of media representation of social care. We need to stop confusing confidentiality with secrecy and promote the outstanding work that social care staff achieve. This weeks interview is with Dez Holmes. Dez is the Director of Research in Practice, having previously been the Assistant Director. Prior to this, Dez was the Programme Manager for the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes (C4EO) responsible for Capacity Building.  Before this she was employed by a Local Authority and worked across directorates (Children &amp; Young People’s Services and Neighbourhoods) in managing and coordinating integrated early intervention services to families.  Dez established and chaired multi-agency Locality Panels as part of this and previously managed multi-agency prevention programmes (YISPs), winning a European Regional Development Fund award for services to children.  She has worked as a lecturer (Social Work MSc) and has several years experience of training and workforce development . The conference tackled early intervention of the ‘toxic trio’ of domestic violence, substance misuse and mental health issues and how they impact children and families – and as professionals, how we can help. We had some fantastic feedback, included below, of the speakers and content. I therefore felt the need to share with those professionals who couldn’t make the conference some of the fantastic information from the day.   Each speaker developed and built upon each others topics, I have therefore compiled subject areas which highlight the more prominent topics of the day. Subsequent to stepping down as the Shadow Olympics Minister in 2012, Tessa was appointed to lead a global campaign to ensure an integrated approach to the early childhood years in the post Millennium Development Goals framework.   Jane Evans – a Freelance &amp; Associate Trainer, Trauma Parenting Specialist,  Author, Blogger, Speaker and Consultant. Jane focuses on attachment in early years, children and parenting effected by trauma – either post domestic violence or with adoptive parents, foster or kinship carers. Professor Lynn McDonald – joined Middlesex University in 2008. Previously she was a Reader at Brunel University School of Social Work, a researcher for 10 years at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin Centre for Education Research, and for 12 years an Assistant Professor of Social Work, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Jim – “I have never ever met anybody in the safeguarding community who didn’t care about the people they were going in to protect” Jim Gamble brings over thirty years experience from the world of protective services and a strong reputation for successful delivery in counter terrorism, organized and hi-tech crime prevention and child protection. A strong advocate of international multi-agency partnerships, Jim was the founding Chief Executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, the Association of Chief Police Officers lead on Child Protection and Child Trafficking and the founder and initial Chair of the Virtual Global Task Force, an international collaboration to make children safer online. His primary focus has been on developing effective multi-sector partnerships that make people safer. Jim was awarded the QPM for his services to policing. In our interview Jim (@JimGamble_INEQE) discussed INEQE, a business focussing on making peoples lives safer, specifically child protection, through training and technology on a global scale. He explained the Safer Secure Schools and Colleges Programme – how students and teachers are being educated on the benefits and harms of social media engagement, as well as equipping them with OFSTED level requirements to help them create safer online engagements. He explains the need for educating children on the mechanics of social media use rather than prevention of access as this enables the benefits of social media to be utilised by children rather than encouraging hidden damaging behaviours. Jim states that cyber bullying should be credited as a criminal offence if it has health and social risks to children’s lives. This conversation flows into the use of technology in identifying victims of child abuse and how we can protect those who are abused and can save them from their exploitation. We need to continue to advance technology to identify abusers and resources to rescue those who need to be. Jim argues ‘we need to be asking ourselves in social care every time we engage with a child “did I hear them and have I helped them?”‘, and that social workers need to understand the online profiles the children they work with create as well as their home lives. This will dramatically aid social workers to protect children and families to a greater extent, as long as technology is embraced and not just seen as a a dangerous tool. Antonina Dashkina, President of Russian Union of Social Workers and Social Pedagogues, Vice President of INGO Conference, Council of Europe. We explore social work in Russia and the differences between Russia and the UK – most notably Russians view social work with a glass half full attitude rather than the negative attitude the UK appears to have of our profession. Antonina has an incredible wealth of knowledge and provides a fascinating insight into international social work. We touch on the political situation between Russia and Ukraine and she explains to us the impacts on Russian social work and her talks with her Ukrainian equivalent. Antonina obtained a degree in English at the Moscow State Pedagogical University, became a community worker in the 1980s and subsequently a Doctor of Social Work. Antonina Dashkina, President of Russian Union of Social Workers and Social Pedagogues, Vice President of INGO Conference, Council of Europe. We explore social work in Russia and the differences between Russia and the UK – most notably Russians view social work with a glass half full attitude rather than the negative attitude the UK appears to have of our profession. Antonina has an incredible wealth of knowledge and provides a fascinating insight into international social work. We touch on the political situation between Russia and Ukraine and she explains to us the impacts on Russian social work and her talks with her Ukrainian equivalent. Freelance broadcaster Faye Dicker founded Freelance Mum. Freelance Mum began life in June 2013 when Faye recognised the need to connect like minded women. A freelancer for years, yet mum for much less –  she realised she had a foot in both camps &amp; neither in one. No longer on the baby circuit or in a fixed work place, she was inspired to found FM and create a community to provide inspiration &amp; support for other freelancing mums. Faye has her own podcast for mothers who are trying to balance a work life and having children. Finding herself in an isolated world of freelance work and juggling motherhood, Faye decided to create a community to help new mothers still have their ‘watercooler’ moments whether it be a business or a baby question – a community that helps those who need it. Faye explains the need to be clever as a freelance mum and the challenges that working has with a child who is ever developing and as their routine changes so does childcare requirements. We discuss some issues that early parents have, especially mothers who return to work very early, and the challenges that it provides. We delved further into the roles of women in their careers and how this is balanced with their desire for parenting – a universal issue. — I’d like to talk about social media and the responsibilities of the bigger players and their role to protect the vulnerable. Not long ago I was co-host of a conference looking at children in the media and Facebook and Google sent representatives to address the conference. During the course of the Facebook presentation we were told that there were 80 million fake Facebook accounts by their reckoning and many thousands of accounts where parents had falsified the age of their child in order to allow then to have an account. Now Facebook were recently made aware in no uncertain terms by a large section of the community of its displeasure when they suggested scrapping any age limit at all to have an account. We all know what happens when you have a combination of under 13′s and poor parental supervision – the dangers of exploitation of grooming and exploitation are increased. I formulated a proposal then, and stand by it now, that if some of the funds allocated by these international companies to pay for security and prevention of child abuse were targeted in a more specific way we might get somewhere faster. My suggestion is that the large companies fund schools to provide time for either an existing member of staff or a part time person to act as guarantor of the age of the child applying for an account. Schools are the perfect place to say whether a child is a specific age or not. I attended the BASW UK conference and AGM and spoke at a workshop entitled ’embracing a media we love to hate’. It was an excellent day with up to 300 delegates helping to create a lively atmosphere and so I thought it a good idea to reflect on the content of the day. RT Hon Sir James Munby, President of the Family Division made the clear point, which I fully support, that social workers should feel respected in family courts and be recognised as expert witnesses. He touched on many subjects which I’ll talk about , such as drug and alcohol courts and some movement in that setting towards an inquisitorial system. Edward Timpson, Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, discussed his family experiences of adoption, social work and social care. He stated his admiration for social workers but controversially said that he could not rule down that child protection services would or would not be moved to the private sector and this angered many people in the audience. Owen Jones, the Guardian columnist, was extremely passionate and  motivational about the media and the unfair way it destroys the morale of social workers and how this damages our support. This is a message I have been putting out for years. We need to give positive stories about our work to help social workers gain trust with new cases when on the doorstep the next day. I’ve tried to include important points from the day to help you in your practice or studies. The guest this week is Sandra Trotman Meadows – the Chief Executive Officer of PEYTU, a Bristol based charity providing training and consultancy to the Children &amp; Young People’s workforce. The interview focusses on early years and the influences of the voluntary and charity sector and the importance of early years professionals – and possibly naming them as early years educators. We discuss the changes and impacts in the children’s workforce and the play sector, Sandra’s experiences, her frustrations such as the perceived negative image of those working with children, the needs of children and much much more. Sandra is a former Voluntary Sector Advocate to the Bristol Safeguarding Children Board and Chair of the BSCB Training Sub Committee.  She has also served on the Children &amp; Young People’s Outcomes Board and Bristol’s Strategic Workforce Group.  She is currently a Governor at the City of Bristol College and a representative on Bristol’s Women’s Commission. Through her paid and voluntary work, she has lobbied locally and nationally on behalf of the children’s workforce and supports the drive towards increased professionalism and the recognition of skills and qualifications.  I also discuss World Autism Day and the issues surrounding children and families coping with autism. I highlight the future interviews scheduled for the programme including Dame Tessa Jowell. – Privatising child protection services –  I reflect on the Children’s Minister Edward Timpson’s latest comments on the current issue about the misrepresentation in the media of government plans. – Community Care have publicised the revised and relaunched standards for social work employers in England. I doubt that improvements have been made and so comment on the tensions between expectations and reality. There have been comments from Unison and BASW about supporting the standards for social workers which I have really welcomed. –  I reflect on my favourite podcasts from the last 30 episodes: Firstly ‘This is my childhood; there will be no other’ was a fantastic conference David Niven Associates and BASPCAN held together on early childhood and the ‘toxic trio’. I put together an hour long special of highlights from the speakers which are invaluable for all working with families in episode 26. I highlight the future interviews scheduled for the programme including Dame Tessa Jowell. – Privatising child protection services –  I reflect on the Children’s Minister Edward Timpson’s latest comments on the current issue about the misrepresentation in the media of government plans. – Community Care have publicised the revised and relaunched standards for social work employers in England. I doubt that improvements have been made and so comment on the tensions between expectations and reality. There have been comments from Unison and BASW about supporting the standards for social workers which I have really welcomed. –  I reflect on my favourite podcasts from the last 30 episodes: Firstly ‘This is my childhood; there will be no other’ was a fantastic conference David Niven Associates and BASPCAN held together on early childhood and the ‘toxic trio’. Kieran is a media linguist and communication consultant. His PhD research explored the language of media interviews and he is now working with David Niven Associates to help analyse the negative portrayal of social work in British media. In this interview Kieran provides an academic perspective of the way social work is presented in the media. He has conducted qualitative analysis of articles from the Guardian and BBC which include the word ‘social worker’ and finds all are very negative. To move forwards he emphasises awareness raising to journalists on these issues but also for those speaking to the media. We share our own accounts of having our words twisted into a negative portrayal of our work and how we can prevent this.. DNA is offering training to employers who, like us, recognise that good news stories told by social workers will positively impact the perception the public has of social workers and thus help them do their jobs without such stigma. This training is for those who would like to contribute their success stories. We will help them develop strategies to illustrate their work, prevent negative interpretations  and increase confidence. This work has developed due to a comprehensive survey conducted by DNA which has had excellent feedback which Kieran is currently analysing. 038 Academic Analysis of Social Work in the Media

Dr David Colvin and Bill McKitterick both have been lost to us this year.   David Colvin David was my friend and mentor. He helped me through many difficult situations with a deep rooted wisdom and a compassionate outlook on life. He was a major figure throughout the Scottish social and care system and was appointed chief social work adviser for Scotland in 1991. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968 and was in the forefront of modernising the profession, becoming senior adviser of the Social Work Services Group and from 1993 the head of the British Association of Social Workers of Scotland.He worked as a probation officer in Glasgow from 1955 to 1960 and then held posts as a psychiatric social worker and with the Prison Service before joining a Family Service Unit in 1965.His work extended throughout Scotland – notably in such high-profile projects as the Snowdrop Campaign on the ownership of handguns after the Dunblane shooting. He also brought his experience and understanding of community life to organisations such as NCH Action for Children and the Scottish Disability Foundation. He was also a pioneering chairman of SACRO, the community justice organisation, from 1997-2002, St Columba’s Hospice, from 1998 to 2003, and the Church of Scotland’s Crossroads scheme which helps the disabled at the Eric Liddell Centre in Edinburgh. Dr Colvin was also influential in developing and establishing the Social Work Research Centre at the University of Stirling which reformed the quality of research throughout the profession. Appropriately, in 1998, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at the university. From his youth Dr Colvin showed a keen interest in the arts and throughout his life had a considerable influence on many aspects of the arts in Scotland. In 1991, when he was awarded the CBE for his work in the social services the citation also mentioned his contribution to the arts. Dr Colvin was chairman of the Exhibiting Societies of Scottish Artists who exhibit the work of young artists from the principal art colleges and those of more established Scottish painters. I knew David for over 25 years. He worked closely with six Secretary of States and brought much incisive and clear thinking to the services in Scotland. What David said was important and incorporated the very best of new thinking.  He was a great help to me when I started the social policy charity Action On Child Exploitation and, together, we lobbied government and institutions to change the law and combat sex tourism. Uniquely, his daughter Iona Colvin has not only followed her father into social work but risen to a similar position to the one her father occupied as Chief Social Work Advisor to the Scottish Government. I’m delighted to say that she agreed to record an interview for this podcast.   Bill McKitterick Another friend,Bill McKitterick,was also lost to us this year and his contribution to social work was significant and lasting as well. A man of great compassion and humanity, he never forgot his identity as a social worker. Strongly against privatisation and the erosion of professionalism, he wrote and spoke passionately in favour of his profession and the importance of continuing development and educational advances in social work. He was a committed member of the British Association of Social Workers, acting in various roles and as their Treasurer for many years. Bill was Director of Social Services for Bristol for ten years and , in my view, was responsible for giving the media one of the most significant opportunities to show the work of frontline practitioners. He allowed the BBC to make three one hour programmes following a team of social workers involved in child protection and the result was sensitive and well received. Bill died far too early and his loss left a void . Practical discussion with Jenni Randall and David Akinsanya, providing advice for front line staff and students. Jenni was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her social work services. She is an independent social worker and therapist working primarily with children and young people who are or have been in public care.  David is a successful campaigner for Looked After children having been in care himself. They both are trainers at David Niven Associates, giving the unique perspective that Jenni was David’s social worker.  The experts begin by giving their perspective of how practice has changed over the last 15 years, most notably how fragmented care work has become. Although this is the case, they believe a long lasting relationship with children in care is what they need most. Having been in care himself, David emphasises that some children in care need professional care rather than foster families. Alternative options appear not to be available anymore and the focus of this work needs to be on what benefits the children. Jenni discuss the excellent areas of practice, even “against the odds” due to cuts and attitudes in social work. However they also highlight some very important areas of work with Looked After children which needs improving. For this we hope that those of you in practice can learn from their experiences and continue to help improve the system. Advice Jenni advises new social workers to be able to put themselves in the shoes of the families, children or adults of those they work with. Develop the skills to listen and understand how they feel, as you will do a much better job as a social worker. David advocates getting your hands dirty. Building relationships with those you work with is so beneficial and he states that you should aim to work with people directly rather than ‘sitting behind a desk’. TV and Radio interviews reflecting child protection cases. I often get approached to give these in response to negative stories as the former Chair of BASW; I feel they should be shared within the social work community to discuss the cases in a balanced view rather than the very negative approach that the media takes towards social work. Firstly, an interview discussing why some women have multiple children removed. The interviewer was very shocked by the report and was asking why this situation occurs and stated ‘social workers should be doing more to prevent these problems’. I counterbalanced this by stating that there are many success cases which are not reported and where social workers are making a big difference. I give my reactions to her appearing to advocate stronger intervention. Secondly, Kids Company have released results of an independent enquiry stating that services are failing young people and 1 in 5 children in the UK are living in poverty and in Bristol, where this interview took place, the figure is 1 in 4. The suggestion was that social work was either responsible for, or part of, the problem. I conveyed the need for resources in social work, that social workers have higher caseloads and limited time due to cuts from the government. The notion that poverty is caused by social workers is very unreasonable and I aimed to counteract this belief in this interview. Thirdly, Jimmy Savile was back in the news this week, revealed to have abused over 500 people by using his fame as power. I was asked about the relevance of social work, the lessons that could be learnt by various institutions and help for victims. The one good element of this horrendous case is that hopefully people in any scenario who have experienced abuse can gain the courage to report it and get help. ____ In my view I feel that social workers should be heard in the media more to share positive stories about their work. We achieve so many successes and have wonderful stories about improving lives. In no way should front line staff be forced to talk or respond to negative stories. Secondly, Kids Company have released results of an independent enquiry stating that services are failing young people and 1 in 5 children in the UK are living in poverty and in Bristol, where this interview took place, the figure is 1 in 4. The suggestion was that social work was either responsible for, or part of, the problem. I conveyed the need for resources in social work, that social workers have higher caseloads and limited time due to cuts from the government. The notion that poverty is caused by social workers is very unreasonable and I aimed to counteract this belief in this interview. Thirdly, Jimmy Savile was back in the news this week, revealed to have abused over 500 people by using his fame as power. I was asked about the relevance of social work, the lessons that could be learnt by various institutions and help for victims. The one good element of this horrendous case is that hopefully people in any scenario who have experienced abuse can gain the courage to report it and get help. ____ In my view I feel that social workers should be heard in the media more to share positive stories about their work. We achieve so many successes and have wonderful stories about improving lives. In no way should front line staff be forced to talk or respond to negative stories. Initially I debate the current topic in the UK – should social services, especially child protection, be moved to the private sector? Julian Le Grand has created a storm by saying that services are inadequate and this would be drastically improved by privatisation. Having specialised in child protection throughout my career I give my honest opinions in response to his debate, as well as looking at responses from others too. I go on to discuss the sheer quality of social services in the UK and how this can be further improved without drastically changing the whole sector. This is my childhood; there will be no other – a conference held by David Niven Associates and British Association of the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect – focussed on early intervention, safeguarding, professional development and much more. The conference was held on 4th April, ahead of this Dame Tessa Jowell and Jane Evans, two speakers at the event, discussed their key topics with the BBC.
