Tech Coach Tip of the Week

  • Just as it’s important for school districts to create and maintain an updated technology plan that focused on hardware and applications, it’s equally as important for school districts to create and maintain an EdTech Integration Plan which describes what should be happening in classrooms. This will then become the baseline and benchmark for the work that happens in the lives of Tech Coaches.

Rank #2: 3 Things Every Technology Coach Should Have Set Up BEFORE The School Year Starts

Podcast cover
Read more

Congratulations, it’s a new school year and you are about to walk into the new term as an Instructional Technology Coach.

The first thing that usually goes through your mind is a ton of questions.

  • What is a Tech Coach?
  • What does my school district think a tech coach is?
  • How will my staff find me and my thoughts and ideas?

What is most important to any Tech Coach is the ability to hit the ground running on the first day.

But how do you do this?

There are many blog posts that agree that the most important thing that you need when starting your school year is an open mind and the ability to make positive relationships? I absolutely agree that strong working relationships are the key to any successful Instructional Technology program.

But what can we do before we meet our staff members?

The best thing that we can do when we meet our staff members is to be completely engaged in their needs and be ready to meet their challenges hand in hand. Your role as an Instructional Technology Coach is to make the teachers life a little bit easier and the only way you can do this is if you walk into the new school year with these three things neatly tucked into your back pocket.

Download this Instructional Technology Coaching Poster Below!

1) Instructional Technology Website

When starting off the school year, it’s important to have an organized collection of resources from which you can not only deploy at a moment’s notice but share with your staff when they are seeking support.

When planning your website, it’s important to remember that you are creating this website for your teachers and NOT for yourself. You don’t want to make the mistake of creating the perfect website that you adore but is not useful and friendly to your teachers.

When planning your website, think about the low hanging fruit in your district and ask yourself if THEY will be able to find what they need when you send them a link to your resource site.

Here are a few options from which you can build your resource website

WordPress

Over the last few years, WordPress has grown into a pretty amazing platform. So much so, that WordPress as an online environment now incorporates more than 29% of the entire internet.

So why not use it for your Tech Coach website?

For many, it’s simply overkill. Too many things moving around and too much time to keep it all organized with its many plugins and website themes. However, if you are looking to use WordPress for your Tech Coach blog, then here are some solutions that you might be interested in.

For more information about WordPress, check out our online resources today.

Edublogs

If you are seeking a very easy to learn WordPress solution, I strongly suggest checking out EduBlogs. Hosting more than 4 MILLION educational websites, it’s one of the easiest and safest ways to create your home blog, or your tech coach website.

WordPress.com

A few years ago, I wouldn’t consider sharing WordPress.com on a review post such as this. However, recently, the mighty home of all things WP has grown up greatly. For free, WordPress.com has several free themes and options available for using the world's most popular web platform.

Google Sites

New to the educational game, but certainly an option that needs to be mentioned is “New” Google Sites. Honestly, I’m not sure after 3 fantastic years of being in the classroom we should still be calling it “new” but we will save that for another blog post.

By using Google Sites, you are creating and even modeling very simple yet sophisticated web development for your teachers. Anyone in a G Suite environment should be taking advantage of how easy it is to create with Google Sites. To learn more about Google Sites, check out our online resources today.

OneNote

Where OneNote is certainly not considered a website, it should be considered as a vital tool in any educational environment using Office 365. By organizing your OneNote Notebooks into tabs and sections, you can create a very simple interface for your users by adding a table of contents page. For more information, visit our OneNote resources today to get started.

2) An Appointment Calendar

Once you have your website set up, it’s important to have a way for your staff members contact you. Sure, it’s easy to use email as your primary communication tool, but your time is too valuable to be stuck opening up Gmail a million times a day. Instead of using email, consider using these address book applications for your digital communication tool this year.

Calendly

One of the more popular online calendar programs is Calendly. A Freemium tool, Calendly allows you to connect your online calendar to your Google Calendar.

Google Calendar

If you are not looking to add extra accounts and passwords to your toolbox, it’s pretty easy to create appointment slots using Google Calendar.

3) A Professional Support Group

When you first accept your Technology Coaching job and you start planning out what you want to do during your first year, you might get overwhelmed with ideas. As the school year progresses, you might find yourself feeling a little awkward. As a Tech Coach, you are not a teacher, but, you are not an administrator.

One of the most important things you can have with you as you start any new school year is a support group of other Tech Coaches who you can bounce ideas off of.

There are several places that you can turn to for information, resources, and support.

Of course, as the school year begins there are many more than three things that any Tech Coach needs to have in their pockets. We would love to hear from you.

Please share your resources, links, and websites below in the comments section and let us know what one thing you can’t live without each school year.

Do You Have a Question For Us?

5 Ways To Encourage Tech Integration For All Staff Members

  • Define what tech integration is for staff membersUsing technology in the classroom?Simple: Kahoot / BrainPop
  • Advanced: Web Design / Coding
  • Going fully digital (paperless)LMS / Google Classroom
  • Using tech for tech or using tech to replace a previous non-tech itemSAMR
  • TPAC
  • Work with teachers inside their classrooms to model technology integrationFocus on one or two applications in a building at any one time so you can focus your communications, newsletters, pd trainings on a smaller group of tech items
  • Offer to teach about Digital Citizenship
  • Highlight your tech-infused teachers and what they are model. Invite other teachers to watch them teach or use the tech in their own classrooms.
  • Focus on the curriculum and not on the tech.Teachers are more comfortable talking about curriculum rather than tech
  • Help them expand an idea, a lesson, or a project to incorporate a tech component that enhances the goal.
  • Encourage teachers to share their lesson plans with you and invite your assistance in remixing it.
  • Provide simple, step by step guides (written/video)SMORE
  • Slide decks
  • Google Sites
  • Include an area in these “crib/tip sheets” where you share 1-3 example lesson ideas incorporating the tech.
  • Don’t overcomplicate things when having conversationsListen to what they are asking … give them only what they want
  • Don’t jump into your first conversations by giving teachers a ton of new ideas that might overwhelm them
  • Simply ask why. What is the goal? Sometimes no tech is better than MUST tech.

Rank #6: The Importance of Tech Coaches Focusing on Function and NOT on Application

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff sits down with New Jersey Tech Coach Eric Guise to talk about the importance of Tech Coaches focusing on the function rather than the application. For many Tech Coaches, they are often in a position of wanting to push a specific app because it's the latest and greatest. However, for many teachers, these new and exciting applications aren't household names and it's often scary to think about introducing something new.

So what is the solution?

Rather than pushing an application such as Flipgrid, it's best to push the concept of “what do you want your students to be able to do?” and THEN work in a conversation about a fantastic application that can meet all of their classroom needs for free.

In today's episode, we take you through several scenarios where teachers might ask a Tech Coach about a specific function or classroom activity and provide several great solutions for how to help that teacher bring technology into their lessons.

Today's episode of Ask the Tech Coach is brought to you by Dyknow.

When Technology Teams plan for technology integration, it is crucial to think about how teachers will manage student device distractions during class. Dyknow’s classroom management software empowers teachers to teach with technology by enabling real-time visibility of student activity to identify off-task behavior and redirect that behavior with blocking or messaging.

Additionally, Dyknow enables teachers to create blocking plans, facilitate formative assessments, and view student history after class. Dyknow defeats device distractions so you have the confidence that your time and investment in learning technology is reaching its full potential. Help empower your teachers to embrace technology integration knowing that their students are on-task during class with Dyknow. Learn more at www.dyknow.com

Tech Coach Tip of the Week

  • When attending conferences such as FETC, TCEA, or even ISTE it’s important to wear multiple hats. As a Tech Coach representing your district, you should keep your eyes open for what will be useful with your teachers. As a Connected Educator, you should be reaching out to network with other Tech Coaches. Most importantly, you are going to the conference to learn how to be a better professional development provider so take advantage of everything that you have access to while at the conference.

How To Tech Coach At A Tech Conference

Make a list of sessions you wish to attend and add it to your Calendar

  • Add sessions that are both Tech Coach focused as well as sessions that might benefit your district and teachers
  • Attend sessions of “rockstar educators” to learn how others present both workshops and lecture sessions
  • Talk to your Administrators about what will be happening and what type of recon you could be doing for the district-let them know you are going to the conference

Prepare to do a TON of Networking-social media, face to face

  • Do your homework before you go
  • Hangout near the Press Room, Bloggers Cafe, and walk the vendor floor

Take Notes

  • Use an App such as Evernote to take notes during the conference.
  • Notes can be video, audio, or written
  • Crowdsource your note-taking with others in the session or at the conference
  • If you can’t attend a session, seek out the presenter links from the conference website

After the Conference- Pay it forward with staff

  • Connect with presenters
  • Create Twitter Lists
  • Share your curated resources

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How should we define “Flipped Classroom” in 2019?
  • What are some of the pros/cons about Flipping?
  • Is there a best way to flip?
  • Is there a wrong way to flip?
  • How can Tech Coaches both model, and support our teachers in Flipping their classrooms?
  • Apps To Use When Setting Up Flipped Classrooms
  • Resources

About our Guest

Adam Bevan, CEO YouToring

Having completed a double major in English and Drama in 2009 in the leafy green University town of Loughborough, England, Adam didn't expect at the time to end up as a leading EdTech provider in Chicago just one decade later. Having completed an MEd to take his passion of teaching into the classroom, Adam was commended for his outstanding pedagogy at several large events, including a school coalition which found Adam's utilization of technology in the classroom to be outstanding. Content in the classroom, Adam didn’t begin his own tutoring platform until 2014 when a concerned mother from the school he was previously teaching at tracked him down to his new school to convince him to tutor her daughter, claiming ”You were her favorite teacher; she really needs good grades in English to get into Law School!” He soon found that he loved being able to experiment with thematic learning and bleeding edge edtech in this own tutoring practice and quickly realized the power and potential of one particular technology: virtual reality. Adam founded YouToring (a virtual reality teaching platform) in 2018 and has already reached students on 3 continents.
