Ep. 58 – WHY to Start Learning Spanish Today

These are our 5 favorite things to do when we need some inspiration to practice and use our Spanish. Try 1 or all of them and let us know how it went! (For here or to go?), efectivo o tarjeta (how to pay – cash or credit), sin (without). Watch a movie en Español – Recommendations: No Se Aceptan Devoluciones, Mama (con Penelope Cruz), Diarios de Motocicleta, Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama También. TV Episodios: Narcos, Las Chicas del Cable. Tip: Keep a notebook next to you to write down words and phrases Play Loteria – Fun Mexican game. Make it a drinking game, play with friends. Play with pinto beans. Try a Latin Food Recipe – Nuestra favorito es ceviche y margaritas! Invite a Friend Over to speak Spanish –  This one can go along with any of the previous 4. Invite a friend to join you as long as they are willing to speak Spanish. If you are just starting out set a timer for 20-30 minutes and try and speak “solo en espanol” for that time. Not only that but this time we’re doing group sessions with up to 4 other people which have been a new and fun experience. Ep. 55 – Feliz Año Nuevo

Nuestra ultimo episodio del año! Another year that we have completed podcasting our journey to become a bilingual family. It had it’s excitement and challenges and we recap it in this last episode of 2017. We started the year with our trip to Oaxaca. A beautiful place in Mexico just South of Mexico City. If you want to take a listen to our experiences while there check out episode 32-34. Ben started using News in Slow Spanish and doing lessons on his own. Jennie started attending social meet up group events and found it helped with shyness while speaking. Jennie also went to Santiago and Valparaiso Chile in South America con una amiga! Check out episode 39-42 to hear all about it. We had a really big change when our bilingual nanny gave her notice. We had to find more ways away from the house to practice speaking in Spanish as well as a new child care option for our son. Plus we felt like we were saying goodbye to a member of our family. But it introduced us to the bilingual education system as we put our son in a bilingual Montessori school. He is thriving and we are happy to keep up the daily immersion for him. Something unexpected came out of it and now we are connected with so many other bilingual families. We have hosted “dinners en espanol” and have enjoyed meeting other bilingual parents and niños. We took a break over the summer – (note to podcasters) don’t take more than 3 months off iTunes will delete it from your subscribers feeds! Live and learn BUT it was a much needed and and very enlightening break. We learned…. We still love this podcast and want to make time for it. Our post processing was way too complicated. We needed to simplify the whole process. We came back more excited than ever to continue sharing this journey. Jennie made a big change that benefits the podcast. She left her job as a hairstylist behind the chair, after 15 years!! Travel and flexibility was a motivator but also putting time into other projects like this Podcast. That means that next year exciting things are to come! We hope you enjoy our recap and most important thank you for listening, subscribing, and sharing this journey with us. Breaking Español

The past week proved to be full of exciting times meeting new friends in Español! Both Jennie and Ben met several people that are first language Spanish speakers and engaged in some interesting conversations. This episode introduces a new format where they talk about experiences like these along with other things they learned like new Spanish words and phrases. Enjoy! Ben’s Week  Almost finished with Duolingo! Presented at SD Startup Week In Spain they speak with a Lisp and using Vosotros (ref) Barcelona is not like the rest of Spain (ref) Ben met a guy from Mexico City (DF) at a conference and now has a tour guide for his upcoming trip  Jennie’s Week  Jennie met someone from Colombia at Gymboree They had a connection because our Spanish teacher is from Colombia While talking with her the Colombian woman mentioned not to learn from her because she spoke very informal.  This Week We Learned  Buen Provecho = Enjoy the food Agua Fria = Cold Water Sink = Lavabo (in TJ we say Sink) Haber = To have Has visto la peli = Have you seen the movie? Has ido a Tijuana = Have you been to Tijuana? Ayer habia una mujer aqui = Yesterday there was a woman here Habias llegado = You will have arrived  Notes  There is a new bridge from San Diego to the Tijuana airport to make travel to Mexico easier. More info at the Cross Border Express website. The bridge costs $18 to cross and saves tons of time when traveling to/from Mexico. Ep. 26 – Embarazados Pelicula

Ben just got back from his trip to Mexico city so we sat down to hear how it went. Ben was there with his brother for his bachelor party (Despedida de Soltero) and visited many areas, the huge park Chapultepec, and enjoyed a ton of great food. Ben stayed in Downtown near the Palacio de Las Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) which was filled with tons of people on the weekend for shopping and eating. Shopping is organized into separate areas based on the type of items (Medical supplies, Men’s Clothing, etc.) and there were lots of people trying to get you to buy their products as is typical in a busy shopping area. Most of the time Ben was in La Roma and La Condeza area however. These areas are known as a Hipster area which means great food and drinks as well as beards and skinny jeans. At night these areas came alive with a vibrant young community that is progressing the cuisine and cocktail scene. Beyond the hipster areas Ben and his brothers went to the “Central Park” of Mexico City named Chapultepec. This park once was the home of the Mexican president and now is the home to some of North America’s finest Museums. There Ben spent some time watching the performers in park as well as learning about Mexican history in the Museo de Antropología (Museum of Anthropology). While the trip was filled with mostly eating and checking out cultural things, Ben and his brothers also made it to a salsa club “Mama Rumba”. This was an experience. Ben said that all 300 people in the club danced at a professional level and the eight piece band was killing it. Ben gave it his best to learn with the help of a young couple they met, but alas his skills are more appropriately focused on computers rather than the dance floor. On the way back Ben was able to use the new Cross Border Express CBX bridge from the Tijuana airport directly across the border into San Diego. We have a saying here in San Diego aboout this place “We build bridges, not walls” The CBX now allows people to park or get dropped off in San Diego at the entry to CBX and then walk directly across the border into the Tijuana airport. This is super convenient because the TJ airport has many more direct flights to other parts of Mexico and using the bridge saves hours of waiting at the border. We have a 10 month old son, Jack. He has been the light of our life since he’s joined us here on planet Earth. Naturally, since we want everyone to gain a greater compassion for others by learning a new language, we decided to raise him bilingual. We have no doubt Jack will grow up being able to better communicate with other kids as a result of these efforts. In this episode we share the steps we’re taking to help our son learn both Spanish and English at the same time. Enjoy! Ep. 32 – Oaxaca Journal pt 1 – First Impressions

This week we interviewed the man that has helped us immensely in our journey and taught us practically all the Spanish we know, our Spanish teacher, or guide as he likes to call himself, Lalo Vega! Lalo runs the Culture and Language Center (link) in San Diego where he has a unique approach to teaching. His students start learning how to converse from Day 1 while also beginning to understand the reasons why certain things are the way they are. He focuses on becoming functional and being able to communicate rather than being able to pass a fluency test. Lalo has a great story about how he got to this point and in this episode we get a glimpse of his story and what you can do to start learning today. Ep. 5 – Interview with Lalo Vega

Thanks to Lalo we recently discovered a fun new app called Hello Talk which has been a ton of fun so far. It’s sort of like having a pen pal from another country that is trying to learn your language, and you theirs. So you can chat back and forth as well as correct each others messages. It’s a whole new experience for us that we were excited to share. It has also been a few weeks since we sat down in the studio so here we catch up on the past few weeks interviewing folks as well as some fun new vocabulary we learned. Ep. 37 – Hello Talk

This week we’re talking all about immersion. There are two main ways we think about immersion, in school and in life. So we have two stories this week about how bilingual education may be coming back if a state proposition passes as well as a tale of one woman who took her family through Mexico and South America to truly immerse themselves in Latin life and culture. In California this year we have a state proposition, prop 58, that would repeal a former proposition that practically banned bilingual education in the state. Prop 227 passed in 1998 with 61% of the vote in response to a few protests from Latino parents that felt their childrend weren’t prepared for college since they didn’t learn English well enough in school. Fast forward almost 30 years and it has become a civil rights issue. Now many Latinos feel their culture is being stripped away from their children since they end up not knowing much Spanish by the time they graduate. This charge is lead by the non-profit, Californian’s Together, which is leading the bilingual movement here in the state. In addition to Spanish immersion in schools, Jennie found a great article in Los Angeles magazine titled “Learning Spanish as a Familia” The article is about the author and her family that left the US behind to immerse themselves in Latin culture and to learn Spanish. This week we recap some of our recent learning challenges including a video chat where Ben helped Lalo with some questions about his blog and Jennie who made a few new bilingual friends at a nearby park. When Ben had a session helping Lalo with his website all in Spanish It went well but there were a lot of words Ben didn’t know because of the vocab related to websites. We met some other bilingual parents at a nearby park. They both grew up speaking Spanish in their home so they obviously can speak more naturally than us but we were able to have a little convo and become friends. Another friend we made at the same park, on the same day, was an actual Flamenco teacher! This was fun for Ben because he finally got to talk to someone that understands his favorite music. A new Ted talk discussing reasons for language learning got us thinking why we would recommend learning a new language. The main reason we came to find was that without having some grasp of the language, you’ll never truly be able to experience another culture and what it has to offer. Even within just a short time learning you’ll definitely notice that different feeling when you travel to a country that speaks that language natively. We’ve had many experiences like this and is still one of our main motivations. This episode is all about food. Specifically food from Santiago, Chile. Jennie’s recent trip to Chile gave her many opportunities to eat the local fare and enjoy the culture. Prepare and eat immediately as the bread gets hard once cold. 1 cup of flour 2 Tbsp Lard Warm water 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp yeast Perbre Chilean Salsa 1 tomato 1 green chile Olive oil to taste Salt to taste 1 shot of white vinegar 1/2 clove of garlic Black pepper to taste Cumin to taste Oregano to taste 1 shot of white wine 2 tsp coriander Merquén to taste (chilean spice) 2 Tbsp Chilean paste 1/2 white or red onion Chop the tomatoes, onion, green chili. Mince the garlic and cut the coriander. Mix together, season the pebre with white wine, olive oil, spices and paste, white vinegar. Adjust the flavor to your liking with salt and pepper. On this episode we talk a lot about the past few weeks of learning as well as some of the encounters we’ve had trying to speak Spanish in real life. Ben was up in Santa Barbara for some work and had a few opportunities to speak Spanish while Jennie stayed home watching Novelas and eating ice cream. On this episode we talk a lot about the past few weeks of learning as well as some of the encounters we’ve had trying to speak Spanish in real life. Ben was up in Santa Barbara for some work and had a few opportunities to speak Spanish while Jennie stayed home watching Novelas and eating ice cream. This week we get to hear from Jennie’s cousin, Michael Field, who went through a Spanish immersion program as a child and is planning an upcoming study abroad in South America. Michael started his journey at an early age of 5 years old when his parents enrolled him in a Spanish immersion school in Portland, Oregon. His journey has taken him to and from Spain many times where he lived as an exchange student with a local Spanish family. Throughout his and his sister’s life they have had this super-power of speaking the Spanish language fluently and in this episode you get to hear all about what that is like. Enjoy!
