He talked about how the old-school mentality in oil and gas has to die. I could not agree more! The old-school mentality he was speaking of was around a video he created talking about how guys can use LinkedIn to make videos, start to build a resume, attract an audience, and get jobs online. He was shocked to find so many people comment negatively on the video saying “Well, that’s just now how it’s done” or “That’s not how I do things”. I appreciate his frustration in the video because I’ve been fighting this mentality tooth and nail for over six years in this industry. Transparency in pricing is another of these old-school mentality things I would like to see die immediately. What do I mean? How Much Does It Cost Already?! When you go to a company’s website you want to buy from, what’s the most frustrating thing for you? If you’re like most people, the most frustrating thing is trying to figure out how much it costs to work with them. You’re left wondering, “How much does this cost? Do I have the budget for this? I have no idea … Is this a premium service? Is it an entry-level or commodity service? How much is this going to cost me?” This leads to embarrassing thoughts like, “I don’t even know if I want to fill out a lead form. Because if I fill out this form and have their salespeople contact me, is it going to create an uncomfortable situation where I have to admit I don’t have the money for it?” You see how we are only making our problems worse by not having pricing on our websites? You should know up-front this is some bleeding edge, way far out there, waaaay down the far end of the adoption curve stuff if you come along with me on this journey. Oil and Gas Marketing Plan: Why Transparent Pricing is the Future

No pain, no gain! Am I headed back to health coaching, or are am I gonna learn you some oilfield sales tactics? When prospects reach out, they don’t tell you the whole story. Let’s look at the oilfield sales tactics you need to uncover their real problems, convert more leads, and close more sales.  Oilfield Sales Tactics Transcription Let’s talk about oilfield sales tactics and what you can do to incorporate them into your marketing approach to convert more leads and close more sales. No Pain, No Sale Anyone who has gotten to know me over the past four years and our approach here at Tribe Rocket knows we are very big fans of Sandler selling and the Sandler Sales approach. Sandler Rules! No pain, no sale! What Sandler means by no pain, no sale is that if you don’t discover or uncover the real problem, the personal problem that your prospects are dealing with, you are not going to close a sale. Even if you’re not in sales, you already understand this intuitively. Because you have more than likely sat down with amateur sellers who listen to you for about 30 seconds and then immediately start selling you. They’re not concerned with solving a problem so much as selling you something and getting you to sign on the line that is dotted. As important as it is to get your customers to sign on the line that is dotted, you will not get there unless you get to the level of how it personally affects them. And I keep pointing back here so let’s just walk through the three levels of pain real quick. The Continuum of Pain The three levels of pain, or as Mark Lacour would say, problem. I like the way Mark focuses on problem vs. pain because problem makes it a bit more concrete. Pain is a bit, I don’t know, esoteric. But you have the surface, the business, and the personal. The surface is very easy to understand because that is what people tell you when they call to look for services. Back when I worked at Quicken loans they started by asking, “What is the interest rate? I need to know the interest rate.” Thankfully, Quicken taught us how to pivot around that question and dig into the real problem. But we’re not selling mortgages in the oil field, so let’s take an oilfield sales tactics example from a seismic services company. Earthshattering Oilfield Sales Tactics Let’s say you sell seismic services out in the Permian Basin. A geologist gives you call and says, “I need to understand the subsurface rock we are drilling in this acreage we just acquired. There are some raster logs and other things, but I need a much better understanding.” All right, right now we understand, we got to his surface problem. Even an amateur seller can stumble across the business problem. Some professionals think the business pain is where you stop. But the true professional knows you need to dig deeper. You need to understand how this affects them personally. Let’s go back to our seismic company example. This geologist called you up and you understood he needed seismic services. Now you know that he has “X” dollars and needs the work done in 30 days. Let’s Make Things Personal One layer deeper we get to the personal pain or the personal problem. How is this impacting this person personally? What are the stakes for him or her? What does he or she stand to gain or lose by not taking action and solving the problem? That is the true core of personal pain and in uncovering the personal problem. Going back to our seismic services example. Since we already know that he has “X” budget and needs it done in 30 days, we have to dig one layer deeper. If we do so, we might discover he’s a geologist for a venture-backed company. When they got started, they were having a pretty good success rate in drilling wells. But they’ve recently had a bit of a dry streak. And if they hit another dry hole, they’re going to start to lose the confidence of their investors. If they lose the confidence of their investors, then that puts the whole company in jeopardy, which puts this geologist’s job in jeopardy. And, of course, it’s the geologist’s job to tell people “Hey, this is where I think we should be drilling.” Using the right oilfield sales tactics, we can understand this is how it impacts him personally. Don’t Fear The Pain, Bring The Pain The funny thing about understanding personal pain is amateurs, and even some professionals, are afraid to dig to this level. But this is what your customers and prospects want from you. They want you to understand the problem so you can give a good diagnosis. So you can get an accurate diagnosis about how to solve the problem they are dealing with. Once you understand how this impacts your prospect personally, you have a very good understanding of why they need to solve the problem. And the why is what we’re after. Why are they struggling with this problem? Because they don’t always realize just presenting the surface problem is not going to solve the whole problem. Often times, prospects come to us with symptoms. It’s up to us to uncover the real problem and give a cure. What Do Oilfield Sales Tactics Have To Do With Marketing? So what is all this pain talk and what do oilfield sales tactics have to do with your marketing? In the same way customers appreciate you digging into the problem and trying to give a real solution, a real cure to what ails them in a one-to-one sales conversation, that’s what they’re looking for when talking about your products and services. So when you look at your website, when you look at your social media, when you look at Twitter, LinkedIn, emails that you send, are you communicating with your prospects at the surface level? Are you taking it a bit deeper down to business? Or are you really digging into the personal impacts they are dealing with and trying to solve their problems? It’s not possible to translate every individual personal problem into your messaging across the board. However, it is possible to interview several customers and then start to correlate those personal problems once you start to see trends. So you can put your business in that language, put your sales copy and that language, and put your blog posts in that language. Any time you interact with customers and prospects, if you get to know them better then you’ll be able to message to them better. Whiteboards ain’t digital oilfield technology, James! In tomorrow’s video, I’ll explain why I decided to highjack the keyword “digital oilfield technology”. Today, we use it to look at a rather unexpected and delightful turn of events from last week. We uploaded the audio for each video to our old podcast feed thinking we’d get a few dozen downloads. Instead, we got a few hundred. Plus a couple hundred more and growing. Here’s the story…  Digital Oilfield Technology Transcript Let’s talk about digital oilfield technology. To be very, blunt I’m hijacking a keyword. Because I’m not going to talk about digital oilfield technology as you think of it. But can you really be mad at me? Because digital oilfield technology is the “Internet of Things”. Another term that’s come up recently is “Digital Transformation”. So none of these terms are really hard and fast yet. And when it comes to digital transformation and digital oilfield technology, I want to start getting thoughts around digital marketing into that mix. I have a powerful case study to show you today. Ever Heard of OGDMP? Last week we looked at Oil and Gas This Week and how long it took Mark Lacour and me to build that audience. Of course, now Oil and Gas This Week is the number one oil and gas podcast in the world with, I think, over 400,000 listeners at this point. As I mentioned last week, there’s now the Oil and Gas Industry Leaders Podcast with Paige Wilson and Patrick Pistor with the Oil and Gas HSE Podcast. They’re all on OGGN, the Oil and Gas Global Network. And there’s a reason “oil and gas” is at the front of all those titles, but you probably could guess that by now. What a lot of people don’t know is that was not my first show. The first show we started when we started the company back in 2014 was the Oil and Gas Digital Marketing Podcast. It was quite a feat producing those shows because we had different segments. I was all fired up and sharing tips, and then interviewed people. There are some really great interviews back in that feed. But, we had not published an episode of Oil and Gas Digital Marketing Podcast — OGDMP — since April 21, 2015. When we started this daily video assault last week we said, “Hey, the show’s still in iTunes. Might as well export the video to audio and throw it in the podcast feed. Maybe we’ll get a handful or a dozen downloads.” We were WAY off! Over 4,100 Minutes And Counting By now you know I got whiteboards, and let’s look at this here. So far in May, we’ve had 430 downloads. April, it was 113. And then before November 1, 2017, there almost 30,000 downloads. Moving over to the downloads per day, the dots here represent one day. On April 30, which is when we published the first episode, boom! We got 100 downloads. I was so busy with OTC and networking that I failed to publish the audio for the rest of the days, which is where this dip comes from. But then last Thursday night, I said, “Oh my goodness, 100 downloads! I better go publish the rest!” So overnight on Thursday, I published the audio for the next four videos to the podcast feed. And, boom! Up to 300 downloads in one day. As of this recording, it’s over 525. So what does this have to you and digital oilfield technology? Well, it should be obvious by now. Whiteboards ain’t digital oilfield technology, James! In tomorrow’s video, I’ll explain why I decided to highjack the keyword “digital oilfield technology”. Today, we use it to look at a rather unexpected and delightful turn of events from last week. We uploaded the audio for each video to our <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-oil-gas-digital-marketing-podcast/id831174631?mt=2" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">old podcast feed</a> thinking we’d get a few dozen downloads. Instead, we got a few hundred. Plus a couple hundred more and growing. To be very, blunt I’m hijacking a keyword. Because I’m not going to talk about digital oilfield technology as you think of it. But can you really be mad at me? Because digital oilfield technology is the “Internet of Things”. Another term that’s come up recently is “Digital Transformation”. So none of these terms are really hard and fast yet. And when it comes to digital transformation and digital oilfield technology, I want to start getting thoughts around digital marketing into that mix. I have a powerful case study to show you today. <h3>Ever Heard of OGDMP?</h3> Last week we looked at <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/oil-and-gas-this-week-podcast/id972712230?mt=2" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Oil and Gas This Week</a> and how long it took Mark Lacour and me to build that audience. Of course, now Oil and Gas This Week is the number one oil and gas podcast in the world with, I think, over 400,000 listeners at this point. As I mentioned last week, there’s now the <a href="https://oilandgasindustryleaders.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Oil and Gas Industry Leaders Podcast with Paige Wilson</a> and <a href="https://oilandgashse.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Patrick Pistor with the Oil and Gas HSE Podcast</a>. They’re all on OGGN, <a href="https://oilandgasglobalnetwork.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">the Oil and Gas Global Network</a>. And there’s a reason “oil and gas” is at the front of all those titles, but you probably could guess that by now. What a lot of people don’t know is that was not my first show. The first show we started when we started the company back in 2014 was the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-oil-gas-digital-marketing-podcast/id831174631?mt=2" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Oil and Gas Digital Marketing Podcast</a>. It was quite a feat producing those shows because we had different segments. I was all fired up and sharing tips, and then interviewed people. There are some really great interviews back in that feed. But, we had not published an episode of Oil and Gas Digital Marketing Podcast — OGDMP — since April 21, 2015. When we started this daily video assault last week we said, “Hey, the show’s still in iTunes. Might as well export the video to audio and throw it in the podcast feed. Maybe we’ll get a handful or a dozen downloads.” We were WAY off! <h3>Over 4,100 Minutes And Counting</h3> By now you know I got whiteboards, and let’s look at this here. So far in May, we’ve had 430 downloads. April, it was 113. And then before November 1, 2017, there almost 30,000 downloads. Moving over to the downloads per day, the dots here represent one day. On April 30, which is when we published the first episode, boom! We got 100 downloads. I was so busy with OTC and networking that I failed to publish the audio for the rest of the days, which is where this dip comes from. But then last Thursday night, I said, “Oh my goodness, 100 downloads! I better go publish the rest!” So overnight on Thursday, I published the audio for the next four videos to the podcast feed. And, boom! Up to 300 downloads in one day. As of this recording, it’s over 525. So what does this have to you and digital oilfield technology? Well, it should be obvious by now. But, if it’s not obvious enough, we did the numbers and here they are. Yes, I’ve got more whiteboards. I’m like Bob Dylan over here. Marketers need oil and gas sales training too! If you want to convince your boss to go all-in online, you gotta show ’em the money! But once they’re all fired up, you gotta help them understand buckets of cash don’t happen right away. Here’s how things unfolded with Oil &amp; Gas This Week. As you’ll see, it was no overnight success story.  Oil and Gas Sales Training Transcript “Timing, perseverance, and 10 years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success.” That’s a quote from Biz Stone. If you’re not familiar with Biz, he is the co-founder of a small social network you might’ve heard of called Twitter. Actually, I am 9 years into my 10-year overnight success story. 2019 gonna be lit! But, let’s talk about oil and gas sales training. Specifically, how to train your salespeople and, most importantly, the people at the top of the organization, the C-Suite. How to train them on what to expect in playing the long game online. I should say, not only train them but how to sell them on executing and going all-in online so you can play the long game and develop relationships at scale. Paying Your Dues I used this metaphor in yesterday’s episode where we talked about how everyone in the industry understands you don’t expect to go to a networking event or expo and meet someone and make a sale on the spot. Or within a week. Yes, you do run into some hot prospects here and there. But, anybody in the C-Suite in oil and gas worth their salt knows it takes time to cultivate a relationship and start to see returns and value from it. Typically, 6, 12, or 18 months. Here’s the cool thing, it takes about that long to build relationships and scale things online. But notice the keyword I just said. Scale is the difference. Because online you’re able to you build relationships dozens, hundreds, and then eventually thousands at a time by consistently delivering content and executing properly. The problem you’re going to have if you’re trying to convince your boss to go all-in online is they’re going to say, “Show me the money!” And how do you show him the money? Sales-Driven Marketing for the C-Suite Well, you can look at yesterday’s video on LinkedIn or Facebook, or go to our website and look for “Oilfield SEO”. First, you have to learn how to do keyword research. This will give you data to show leadership. You can say, “Okay, if we can go out there and take these keywords and rank at the top, we know we can add 1,000 website visitors a month to the site. That will translate into 200 leads. That will translate to 40 deals, and those 40 deals for us will be worth ‘X’.” That’s the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and they need to be able to see that. But you have to set expectations that just like any other relationship, it takes time to build an audience and to build relationships at scale. Relentless Consistency This oil and gas sales training would not be complete without a realistic example of this. So, here’s my smaller whiteboard. Yes, my whiteboards got whiteboards, ladies and gentlemen! This is Oil and Gas This Week downloads. Oh my goodness, let’s try to look at this. My lights are always flashing. Okay, the number of downloads per episode; 1K, 2K, 3K, 4K, 5K, 6K. We started back in 2015, whatever month that was. And if you look at the way things went, our first month we got 10, 25, maybe 30 downloads an episode? Then there would be these little spikes and it would drop down. Over time, it would kind of go along and go along and then there be another little spike and quickly drop down to practically nothing. If you have to look at this over here, it’s about 10 months. As you can see, at 10 months we’re still just kind of slogging along, just doing the execution. By the Grace of God and, really, the grace of Mark MaLour, because he’s a machine, we kept doing the exact same thing week after week after week. But, if we were obsessed with the numbers asking, “When is this going to turn into something?” Then we might have quit back here. In podcasting, that’s usually the way it goes. The average podcast doesn’t last past 7 episodes because people are back here going, “When am I gonna make $100,000 per episode?” Here Comes the Hockey Stick So, as you can see, at about 10 months it started to creep up a little, and then creep up a little more. And then, right there between 12 and 14 months, it was this ridiculous hockey stick. Then it drops down and goes right back up and we have a trend. Between 12 and 14 months, it got to where we had about 200,000 listeners to the show. At Drillinginfo, where I started with this whole inbound marketing thing in oil and gas, it was the exact same timeline. Actually, I was able to stop working at Drillinginfo and start this company 18 months after I started doing what I did there. And this is how long it takes to build an audience and start to monetize it. Oil &amp; Gas Sales Training: Crushing Compeitors Closes Deals The thing that you have to do is set everyone’s expectations. You have to sit down and say, “Let’s do some oil and gas sales training. Let’s talk about how this sales-driven marketing approach works.” You have to get the C-Suite to understand that by consistently delivering content week after week after week, it’s going to eventually turn into traffic, leads, and sales. Over time, you are going to dominate the search engines and make your competitors really, really upset. Because they’re not going to be able to take those keywords from you once you own them. Oil and Gas Sales Training: Oil & Gas This Week Podcast Case Study

“Oh, goodness. I’m stuck like this. Oil events is the keyword… somebody help!” Do you have any LinkedIn or Facebook “friends” you’ve never met? When you’ve eventually met one or two of them, did you feel like you’d known them for years? When you do it right online, your prospects and customers feel the same way. Here’s how to scale your oil events networking strategy and connect with old friends you’ve never met.  Scaled Networking at Oil Events Transcript When you attend oil events, your network is your net worth. If you listened to any of a first roughly 90 episodes Oil and Gas This Week, you probably heard me say that about 180 times. Because we all know it’s true. Your network is your net worth. It’s all about who you know! And you can complain about that. Or you can work with the system and get out there and get to know some people, and help some people get to know you. So, let’s talk about oil events and how to scale your oil events networking strategy. Offline Networking at Oil Events First of all, let’s talk about the standard networking event. Whether it’s American Petroleum Institute, API meeting, or OTC… Which, happy OTC Thursday, I believe… Let’s just say you have roughly an hour. And in that hour, you meet five new people. At that point, you have to go back to the office, open your email, and start to set up a call. Or set a lunch meeting or something like that. And then at that lunch meeting, you are starting from fresh. You don’t know each other from Adam. You don’t know anything about each other. The only thing you know is there might be some sort of fit. Either with your personalities, a good business-friend connection. Or with your businesses, being able to send deals back and forth. That’s all well and good, there’s nothing wrong with that. Keep on doing it. And scale your relationship building at the same time. Outbound Networking Again, I’m gonna sound like a broken record because I say this all the time, but the beauty of the Internet is that you don’t have to physically go somewhere to make a connection. But, that’s not the only good thing about the Internet in this regard. Not only are you able to make those connections digitally, but also it’s not an outbound activity like you’re doing at oil events. At oil events, you’re going out not only physically, but you’re also reaching out. You’re setting up appointments and it’s that struggle to start a relationship and get to know somebody. Any time that you go to these places, you know you are not going to close any deals on the spot. As an industry, we know how long it takes to build a relationship. Here’s the cool thing. You can shortcut all of that with scaled relationship building. With digital content you produce. Old Friends Who’ve Never Met Just an example, I mentioned Oil and Gas This Week, those first 90 episodes. When I go to the North American Prospects Expo or OTC, a lot of other time my calendar is full of people reaching out to me because they say they know me. Or they feel like they know me, I should say. I’m sure you have people like that in your life, your digital life. People who you’re connected with on LinkedIn and Facebook “friends” you’ve never met. These days we all have at least one or two, maybe even a handful of people we think we are very much close with, we see them as good friends of ours, but we’ve never met in person. That’s the beauty of doing digital content. Not only are you able to scale that out, but you’re also able to help people start to feel as if they have a real connection with you even if you’ve never had a back-and-forth dialogue. The Psychology of Inbound The way it works, psychologically speaking, is if you’re being authentic. If you’re being transparent. And if you’re sharing helpful, valuable, relevant content about your expertise and what you’re passionate about and what you bring to the marketplace. In a sense, you’re sharing a real part of yourself. Your business self. Which is a lot of the time, especially for us entrepreneurs and business owners. Then, especially if it’s a podcast, people are sitting there with their earbuds in and you’re speaking directly into their brain. Directly into their brain. It’s an amazing thing! I’ve got tons of podcasts I listen to where I feel like I know the person when I go to a conference and finally meet them. Again, don’t stop doing the offline networking. But think about what you can do with digital content so that you can start scaling your networking strategy. I always have this Mr. Rohn quote behind me. When you’ve eventually met one or two of them, did you feel like you’d known them for years? When you do it right online, your prospects and customers feel the same way. Here’s how to scale your oil events networking strategy and connect with old friends you’ve never met. <a href="https://triberocket.com/oil-events/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> <h3>Scaled Networking at Oil Events Transcript</h3> When you attend oil events, your network is your net worth. If you listened to any of a first roughly 90 episodes <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/oil-and-gas-this-week-podcast/id972712230?mt=2" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Oil and Gas This Week</a>, you probably heard me say that about 180 times. Because we all know it’s true. Your network is your net worth. It’s all about who you know! And you can complain about that. Or you can work with the system and get out there and get to know some people, and help some people get to know you. So, let’s talk about oil events and how to scale your oil events networking strategy. <h3>Offline Networking at Oil Events</h3> First of all, let’s talk about the standard networking event. Whether it’s American Petroleum Institute, API meeting, or OTC… Which, happy OTC Thursday, I believe… Let’s just say you have roughly an hour. And in that hour, you meet five new people. At that point, you have to go back to the office, open your email, and start to set up a call. Or set a lunch meeting or something like that. And then at that lunch meeting, you are starting from fresh. You don’t know each other from Adam. You don’t know anything about each other. The only thing you know is there might be some sort of fit. Either with your personalities, a good business-friend connection. Or with your businesses, being able to send deals back and forth. That’s all well and good, there’s nothing wrong with that. Keep on doing it. And scale your relationship building at the same time. <h3>Outbound Networking</h3> Again, I’m gonna sound like a broken record because I say this all the time, but the beauty of the Internet is that you don’t have to physically go somewhere to make a connection. But, that’s not the only good thing about the Internet in this regard. Not only are you able to make those connections digitally, but also it’s not an outbound activity like you’re doing at oil events. At oil events, you’re going out not only physically, but you’re also reaching out. You’re setting up appointments and it’s that struggle to start a relationship and get to know somebody. Any time that you go to these places, you know you are not going to close any deals on the spot. As an industry, we know how long it takes to build a relationship. Here’s the cool thing. You can shortcut all of that with scaled relationship building. With digital content you produce. <h3>Old Friends Who’ve Never Met</h3> Just an example, I mentioned Oil and Gas This Week, those first 90 episodes. When I go to the North American Prospects Expo or OTC, a lot of other time my calendar is full of people reaching out to me because they say they know me. Or they feel like they know me, I should say. I’m sure you have people like that in your life, your digital life. People who you’re connected with on LinkedIn and Facebook “friends” you’ve never met. These days we all have at least one or two, maybe even a handful of people we think we are very much close with, we see them as good friends of ours, but we’ve never met in person. That’s the beauty of doing digital content. Not only are you able to scale that out, but you’re also able to help people start to feel as if they have a real connection with you even if you’ve never had a back-and-forth dialogue. <h3>The Psychology of Inbound</h3> The way it works, psychologically speaking, is if you’re being authentic. If you’re being transparent. And if you’re sharing helpful, valuable, relevant content about your expertise and what you’re passionate about and what you bring to the marketplace. In a sense, you’re sharing a real part of yourself. Your business self. Which is a lot of the time, especially for us entrepreneurs and business owners. Then, especially if it’s a podcast, people are sitting there with their earbuds in and you’re speaking directly into their brain. Directly into their brain. It’s an amazing thing! I’ve got tons of podcasts I listen to where I feel like I know the person when I go to a conference and finally meet them. Again, don’t stop doing the offline networking. But think about what you can do with digital content so that you can <a href="https://triberocket.com/pricing/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">start scaling your networking strategy</a>. I always have this Mr. Rohn quote behind me. Are you treating your customers and prospects the same way on social media? Let’s talk about oil and gas social media, and what you can do online to move prospects along the buyer journey and through your marketing funnel. Especially, here on LinkedIn, hopefully, you’re seeing this over there or on YouTube or wherever… Facebook and so forth. Let me ask you, do you have any family members who when you see their phone number pop up on your caller ID… And you youngsters who don’t know what it’s like to answer a phone call and not know who’s on the other line, you just don’t know the struggle… Do you have any family members who if you see their number on the caller ID, you know exactly what to expect? You look at the number and know if you pick up that phone, for the next 45 minutes you’re about to get an ear full of them, and nothing but them. What they have going on and how exciting all of that is until they’re bored or get another phone call and jump off the call. Do you have any family members like that? I think you might! How about friends? When these people show up on that caller ID of yours, are you very excited to take that call? Do you even want to hear from these people? No! Of course, you don’t. Why? Because all they do is talk about themselves. They’re not adding any value, they’re not building you up, they’re not asking you questions, they’re not developing a relationship. They’re just talking incessantly about themselves. So what does any of this have to do with oil and gas social media? Can You Spot My Target Keyword? Driving Customers Away Again, do you want to hear from any of these people? No! No! It doesn’t add value. It doesn’t do anything to do what we are here to do in marketing, which is what? Right here. Leads! We’re here to convert leads. Marketing is about converting leads. Sales is about closing those leads. So, if we are all about leads than what the hell are we doing out here on social media only talking about ourselves? But, I’m not just going to rant about what we’re doing wrong. Let’s talk about how to do it right. How could we turn these different topics around to not be about us, but to be about you? You, as in the customer. You, as in the prospect. You, as in the person looking to solve a problem in the marketplace. Oil and Gas Social Media in the Buyer Journey First, before we talk about this we have to talk about the three stages right here next to my Mr. Rohn quote that does not move. The three stages in the buyer journey that are all part of this funnel. Awareness. Consideration. Decision. Awareness; I have a problem. Consideration; who can help me solve this problem? Decision; here’s how we’re going to decide what vendor to work with to solve the problem. All of these are topics that can add value. That can build relationships. That can start a conversation and help people through these different… Sorry, I’m learning my weatherman language. Or, body language… Whatever. Forget that. Awareness. Consideration. Decision. Anyone of these topics could help your prospects push through any of these stages and convert to a lead. Aligning Content with Buyer Journey Stages For instance, let’s say you won an award. Let’s say you won a technical award and you were up against a lot of really great competitors. Well, this might be something for the Decision stage. This could be something that is not overtly selling but talking about who you were up against and how you thought you might have been outmatched. But you could write a piece that discusses, “This vs. This… Here’s our product vs. that one over there.” Not trashing anybody. Not saying anything negative. Just talking about the options out there in the marketplace…. which, builds trust. If you just openly talk about your competitors, you build trust. Because your customers, even if you want to pretend they’re not, are talking to your competitors. So you can talk about your competitors and have that conversation in your house, on your website, or you can pretend that doesn’t happen. Anyway, you could talk about that as part of this award that you won. Or, maybe you could turn it into a sort of internal thought leadership piece that talks about “3 (or 5) Pivotal Moments in Company History That Led to This Innovation”. Something that tells a story. Something that engages me and draws me in. Because once I’m engaged and I’m drawn in, then I might be open to a sales conversation. Because this is all about sales. I cannot say it enough. This is all about sales! Earning History But what we don’t understand is that by doing what I found on these company’s accounts is this: You do not have the right to sell to your audience. You earn the right to sell to your audience. And you do that by consistently adding value. By developing content that shares valuable insights that help people through these Awareness, Consideration, and Decision stages. That’s how you start to build relationships and close sales through oil and gas social media. Question for You… If you look at your social media accounts, do you want to hear from you? And if you don’t, what the heck are you gonna do about it? I hope that you stop talking about yourself and start adding value. Oil and Gas Social Media: Your Customers Really Don’t Care About You

“First person to leave a comment about oilfield SEO wins a set of steak knives!” — Let’s keep this conversation going with one of my favorite subjects; outranking your competitors in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). It sounds painful and difficult (it’s not). And I assure you leaving piles of cash on the table is infinitely harder than saying your target keyword a few times in an article. Oilfield SEO. See? I already did it twice!  Oilfield SEO Transcript Let’s talk about oilfield SEO. Please, please don’t skip this video just yet. Yes, SEO sounds weird, Search Engine Optimization, but let’s make it very practical. Let’s go ahead and compare it to the land grab. Everybody knows how it works in this industry when the land grab is on. When I entered the industry back in 2010, the Eagle Ford land grab was on. You had operators out here paying $10,000 per acre for lease bonuses. These days there’s a heck of a lot of interest in the Permian. Although, that’s the gift that keeps on giving so when is in their interest in the Permian? But, the way the land grab works is you want to beat your competitors to the punch. Let’s say you have a lead on 11,000 acres out in Pecos County. It’s a $500 per acre lease bonus and you’re going to have to give the mineral owners whatever the royalty is. You’re looking at the offset wells and thinking, “Wow, this is really great production on the offsets. The leases adjacent are producing really well. I know if we can wrap up this acreage before anybody else does, we are going to be making good money off of this acreage for the next 10, 20, 30 years.” The exact same thing applies to the Internet, it’s just digital. It’s a digital land grab driven by oilfield SEO. How does this work? The Great Crew Change is Changing Everything The way that marketing has always been done in the industry is the way it’s always been done in every other industry. You did trade shows, which still have merit. You did magazine ads and so forth, which still have merit. Especially in this industry. What you cannot do today is rely exclusively on those avenues to drive business. Why? You might’ve heard of something called the “Great Crew Change” or the “Big Crew Change” that’s happening right now. Obviously, the way that business has always been done in the industry is through relationships. The CEO knew such and such, who knew such and such for 30, 20, 15 years. They trust each. There’s a lot of back-and-forth business and everybody prospers. Here’s the problem; those guys are retiring. They’re retiring very quickly. And over the course of the next 5 to 10 years, the gray hair is going to continue to turn over. We know this is an industry. And when that gray hair turns over, it’s going to be replaced by bald guys like me and people younger than me. And what do those people do, the Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z and all of this other stuff? Where do they find answers when they need things? Obviously, the Internet. You go to Google, type in what you’re looking for, and – boom – you have it. Now, the problem in the industry we have right now is nobody’s connecting the land grab in the physical world with the potential they have for a land grab in the digital world. Practically Speaking Oilfield SEO So I want to make this practical for you. I went ahead and did a little research. Let me just say, Google will tell you how many people – roughly, on average – search for certain terms per month. It’s called the Google Keyword Planner. In yesterday’s video I talked about how if you do rathole drilling, there are people wanting to know about that. Well, you might not have believed me so I went and did a little research and found some cherry keywords that are just – mwah! – begging to be taken. And, since it’s OTC time I chose to focus on a couple of these categories from the show. Let’s just look. Alright, this is the first time I’ve used my whiteboard here. Okay, “measurement of gas flow rate” – 30. 30 people per month search for “measurement of gas flow rate” – that exact phrase – into Google. Now if you sell valves and gas flow rate equipment, maybe want to rank at the top of that search? And maybe you want to get, I don’t know, 10 people per month to your website. Because not everybody clicks at the top. But in this industry they probably do. Let’s say you can generate out of that 30… Let’s see your close rate is 10%, so I’m really bad at math and that’s 3. Right? Let’s say you get 3 deals out of that. In this industry, 3 deals can be worth multiple seven figures. All because you do it right online and you get a hold of that sweet digital acreage thanks to oilfield SEO. How Sweet It Is All right, “classification of valves” – 40. 40 people a month search “classification of valves”. And you have to think about the psychology of the type of a person that’s going on Google and typing in “classification of valves”. They are looking for a very specific thing. They are looking for a solution to a problem that you probably solve, but right now your competitors are probably outranking you. Done right, oilfield SEO can solve both of your problems. Another one here, “oil and gas valve symbols”. How helpful could that be if you put together a nice piece of content to explain all the different symbols that are out there in the oilfield? How much could you help? How many relationships could you build if you created a piece of content like that? “Underbalanced drilling” – 90. 90 people a month search “underbalanced drilling”. And I know very little about underbalanced drilling, it’s been quite a while since I’ve had a quick primer. But, that could lead to all kinds of other conversations about every other type of drilling that’s out there and the services that you provide to the marketplace if you go out there and educate them. And this is my favorite one, look at this one. “Offshore construction” – 110 people per month search the exact phrase “offshore construction”. You want to talk about figures? Multiple, multiple seven figures! Mouthwatering Goodness And I did the research. It’s not just that those numbers are there. When you follow through if you know what you’re looking at in the Google search results, with keywords like this my mouth starts to water because… Oh my goodness! Anyone could come along and take all of that search traffic. Just like anybody could come along in Pecos County and scoop up that 11,000 acres. And here’s the beautiful thing. Once you’re at the top of those search results, it’s really, really hard to get you out of the top of those search results. So, are you going to let your competitors beat you? Are you going to just stand there and let the other people take your market share? Are you just gonna let them waltz around and take up all of your digital acreage? I know if I was selling these products and services, I know exactly what I would do. What would you do? Am I wrong, am I right? I don’t know. It sounds painful and difficult (it’s not). And I assure you leaving piles of cash on the table is infinitely harder than saying your target keyword a few times in an article. Oilfield SEO. See? I already did it twice! <a href="https://triberocket.com/oilfield-seo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a> <h3>Oilfield SEO Transcript</h3> Let’s talk about oilfield SEO. Please, please don’t skip this video just yet. Yes, SEO sounds weird, Search Engine Optimization, but let’s make it very practical. Let’s go ahead and compare it to the land grab. Everybody knows how it works in this industry when the land grab is on. When I entered the industry back in 2010, the Eagle Ford land grab was on. You had operators out here paying $10,000 per acre for lease bonuses. These days there’s a heck of a lot of interest in the Permian. Although, that’s the gift that keeps on giving so when is in their interest in the Permian? But, the way the land grab works is you want to beat your competitors to the punch. Let’s say you have a lead on 11,000 acres out in Pecos County. It’s a $500 per acre lease bonus and you’re going to have to give the mineral owners whatever the royalty is. You’re looking at the offset wells and thinking, “Wow, this is really great production on the offsets. The leases adjacent are producing really well. I know if we can wrap up this acreage before anybody else does, we are going to be making good money off of this acreage for the next 10, 20, 30 years.” The exact same thing applies to the Internet, it’s just digital. It’s a <a href="https://triberocket.com/digital-land-grab/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">digital land grab</a> driven by oilfield SEO. How does this work? <h3>The Great Crew Change is Changing Everything</h3> The way that marketing has always been done in the industry is the way it’s always been done in every other industry. You did trade shows, which still have merit. You did magazine ads and so forth, which still have merit. Especially in this industry. What you cannot do today is rely exclusively on those avenues to drive business. Why? You might’ve heard of something called the “Great Crew Change” or the “Big Crew Change” that’s happening right now. Obviously, the way that business has always been done in the industry is through relationships. The CEO knew such and such, who knew such and such for 30, 20, 15 years. They trust each. There’s a lot of back-and-forth business and everybody prospers. Here’s the problem; those guys are retiring. They’re retiring very quickly. And over the course of the next 5 to 10 years, the gray hair is going to continue to turn over. We know this is an industry. And when that gray hair turns over, it’s going to be replaced by bald guys like me and people younger than me. And what do those people do, the Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z and all of this other stuff? Where do they find answers when they need things? Obviously, the Internet. You go to Google, type in what you’re looking for, and – boom – you have it. Now, the problem in the industry we have right now is nobody’s connecting the land grab in the physical world with the potential they have for a land grab in the digital world. <h3>Practically Speaking Oilfield SEO</h3> So I want to make this practical for you. I went ahead and did a little research. Let me just say, Google will tell you how many people – roughly, on average – search for certain terms per month. It’s called the Google Keyword Planner. In yesterday’s video I talked about how if you do rathole drilling, there are people wanting to know about that. Well, you might not have believed me so I went and did a little research and found some cherry keywords that are just – mwah! – begging to be taken. And, <a href="http://2018.otcnet.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">since it’s OTC time</a> I chose to focus on a couple of these categories from the show. Let’s just look. Alright, this is the first time I’ve used my whiteboard here. Okay, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=measurement+of+gas+flow+rate&amp;oq=measurement+of+gas+flow+rate&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">“measurement of gas flow rate”</a> – 30. 30 people per month search for “measurement of gas flow rate” – that exact phrase – into Google. Now if you sell valves and gas flow rate equipment, maybe want to rank at the top of that search? And maybe you want to get, I don’t know, 10 people per month to your website. Because not everybody clicks at the top. But in this industry they probably do. Let’s say you can generate out of that 30… Let’s see your close rate is 10%, so I’m really bad at math and that’s 3. Right? Let’s say you get 3 deals out of that. In this industry, 3 deals can be worth multiple seven figures. All because you do it right online and you get a hold of that sweet digital acreage thanks to oilfield SEO. <h3>How Sweet It Is</h3> All right, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=classification+of+valves&amp;oq=classification+of+valves&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">“classification of valves”</a> – 40. 40 people a month search “classification of valves”. And you have to think about the psychology of the type of a person that’s going on Google and typing in “classification of valves”. They are looking for a very specific thing. They are looking for a solution to a problem that you probably solve, but right now your competitors are probably outranking you. Done right, oilfield SEO can solve both of your problems. Another one here, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=oil+and+gas+valve+symbols&amp;oq=oil+and+gas+valve+symbols&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">“oil and gas valve symbols”</a>. How helpful could that be if you put together a nice piece of content to explain all the different symbols that are out there in the oilfield? How much could you help? How many relationships could you build if you created a piece of content like that? <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=Underbalanced+drilling&amp;oq=Underbalanced+drilling&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">“Underbalanced drilling”</a> – 90. 90 people a month search “underbalanced drilling”. And I know very little about underbalanced drilling, it’s been quite a while since I’ve had a quick primer. But, that could lead to all kinds of other conversations about every other type of drilling that’s out there and the services that you provide to the marketplace if you go out there and educate them. And this is my favorite one, look at this one. <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=Offshore+construction&amp;oq=Offshore+construction&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i61&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;safe=active&amp;ssui=on" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">“Offshore construction”</a> – 110 people per month search the exact phrase “offshore construction”. You want to talk about figures? Multiple, multiple seven figures! <h3>Mouthwatering Goodness</h3> And I did the research. It’s not just that those numbers are there. When you follow through if you know what you’re looking at in the Google search results, with keywords like this my mouth starts to water because… Oh my goodness! Anyone could come along and take all of that search traffic. Just like anybody could come along in Pecos County and scoop up that 11,000 acres. And here’s the beautiful thing. Once you’re at the top of those search results, it’s really, really hard to get you out of the top of those search results. So, are you going to let your competitors beat you? Are you going to just stand there and let the other people take your market share? Are you just gonna let them waltz around and take up all of your digital acreage? I know if I was selling these products and services, I know exactly what I would do. What would you do? Am I wrong, am I right? I don’t know. Oilfield SEO: It’s Just Like Picking Up 11,000 Acres in Pecos County

“Did he just tell me to fire my oil and gas marketing agency? — In this first installment of our new daily video marketing assault, we look at why to insource your oil and gas marketing agency work.  Oil and Gas Marketing Agency Transcript With OTC fast approaching, I find myself scraping all of the websites of all the US exhibitors – oh yeah, it’s fun stuff – and unfortunately looking at a lot of very, very unfortunate social media and digital footprints if you will. And, I don’t know, I just gotta get this off my chest. Here’s the thing, I’m just gonna go right into it. Let’s look at oil and gas, and let me first state my thesis; we are not doing it right. We’re doing it wrong. We’re doing it completely wrong as an industry across the board. We made a transition from print to digital. Now, I should say some of us made a transition from print to digital. A handful of us figured out how to do it right. And then there’s everybody else. And that’s what I’m here to talk about today. The everybody else. You who are out there searching “oil and gas marketing agency”. You who are out there looking to outsource your storytelling, to outsource your marketing. What are you thinking?! This opportunity that lies in front of you right now on this thing we call the Internet is unprecedented in B2B sales and marketing. And there are only two niches in this industry that understand. First niche; oil and gas media. You’ve got Mark LaCour and Jake over at Oil &amp; Gas This Week. Of course, I started the show with Mark back in the day. Now you’ve got Paige Wilson with Oil and Gas Leadership Podcast, the Oil &amp; Gas HSE podcast with Patrick Pistor. Global Energy Media, Ryan Ray, there’s a lot of great digital media that has sprung up in the last couple years. The problem is that the people buying ads are treating these digital media channels exactly like print. Now, I’m not saying “don’t buy ads”. By all means, keep buying those ads on Oil &amp; Gas Global Network. What I am saying is that is not a complete digital strategy. And if you ask me, there is only one other niche that gets it. Only one that has a complete digital strategy. And that niche is oil and gas data and analytics companies led by none other than Drillinginfo. Now, of course, this is slightly self-serving because I did start this whole inbound marketing, content marketing thing in oil and gas. But, let’s be honest. They, and everyone in that space are the only ones in this industry that get it when it comes to digital outside of Oil &amp; Gas Global Network and everything else those guys are doing. And, again, what they’re doing is great. It’s serving a very, very good need. But, they are able to dominate their niche, which is oil and gas new media. And over here, you’ve got Drillinginfo dominating their niche online, which is oil and gas data and analytics software. Oil and Gas Marketing Agency Content Shocks There’s a term that that’s coined by great marketer, great man I would say, Mark Schaefer, called “Content Shock”. It was a couple years ago and it’s been interesting to watch things unfold across the Internet as competition gets more and more fierce outside of this industry. Content Shock happens when you have a large number of people, authors, websites, and publications writing about one particular topic or area of interest. Since they are all flooding search engines with content, it’s very hard to get the top of the search rankings when Content Shock happens. Content Shock hasn’t really happened across this industry. I would argue the digital space is still pretty well wide open. There’s lots of stuff that can be done over there I’m in terms of digital media, I should say. And then, in terms of oil and gas data and analytics, Drillinginfo started it. And then as soon as we started doing what we did at Drillinginfo, IHS started posting to their blog. And then P2 started posting. And then next thing you know that space started to understand that in order to develop relationships in the digital space and to attract people into their business to build those relationships, to attract their ideal clients, that they need to be of service. They need to produce helpful, relevant content over a consistent period of time to be able to develop their audience and to demonstrate their expertise and showcase their experts from within their company. The problem is no other niche has figured this out in oil and gas, except of course OGGN and everything the Mark and the guys are doing over there. Outside of that, no one is stepping up. And it breaks my heart! Because the opportunity is so immense. The opportunity for you to start, today, to start producing content that’s helpful. That’s relevant. That answers questions. That serves your audience. That solves problems. That demonstrates what you bring to the marketplace. Nobody can do that for you. An oil and gas marketing agency, you can outsource some of that to them, but that’s missing the point. That’s why we’re not an agency. Because we want to help you demonstrate that expertise and do that yourself because no one can tell your story like you can. But nobody’s figuring it out! I mean, I could show you dozens and dozens and hundreds, maybe thousands of niches across the oilfield where it’s just wide open spaces in terms of keywords. And you’re thinking, “Okay, well specifically, what does that look like?” It doesn’t matter what you do, there are people out there looking for you. If you’re a rathole driller, guess what? There are people looking for “rathole drilling services”. And there are people who would love to hear your expertise, and your thoughts, and your insights. And you don’t need an oil and gas marketing agency to do it. Because the thing that you’re missing in the new digital space by treating it like it’s print media is that print media is a one-way communication. One way, it’s not even a dialogue, it’s a monologue. Whereas digital is a conversation. Just like this video right here. Now you and I, physically, we can only speak to one person at one time. But, through the magic of the Internet, I am not only speaking to you but ten or a hundred or hopefully thousands of people who end up watching this video. Whether that’s on our blog, on LinkedIn. Whether they’re just laying down for bed at night checking Facebook one last time. Wherever we can meet them and meet you to be able to build that trust and build that relationship with you. You have that opportunity. And, gosh, I hope that a whole lot more of you take advantage of it. Because as I’m looking at OTC coming up all I can think is how much better would your meetings be with your clients and with your prospects if you were consistently delivering valuable content to them? Content that educated them, not only about your products and services but about overcoming the problems they’re dealing with in their day-to-day lives. Their day-to-day work lives. How much time could you save not having to educate your prospects at OTC but actually being able to dig into real conversations about real problems that they’re having? Because they already understand how you can serve them since you have already been serving them over time. Now, I feel like I could start to talk in circles here, so I’m in a wrap this up. That’s my rant for the day. Stop relying on oil and gas marketing agencies. Stop trying to outsource your storytelling. Either hire someone internally. Hire a company like us. Or anybody else out there that can help you understand how to tell your story in a digital way. So you can build those relationships and build that trust. Because you know when it comes down to it, we are sales-driven marketers. And who do people buy from? People they like and the trust. Well, if you’re serving them consistently, they’ll like you. They’ll trust you. And that’s where your sales are going to come from. At the same time, I might just be a newbie here. I’ve only been in the industry for 8 years. Where Crude Prices are Driving 2015 Interview Transcript James Hahn II: Joining The Tribe on the podcast today is Mark LaCour. Mark is the founder of Modal Point, the oil and gas sales experts. He is coming off a record year in 2014. Even as oil prices plummeted he grew his business by 30%. He is our second repeat offender on the podcast. In his previous episode, number 12. You can find either in the archive or you can just go to TribeRocket.com/12, was the most listened to episode and show that we had, until Alan Gilmer’s 2015 projections, which I will also link up in the show notes. So, Mark LaCour is here to strike back with his 2015 business drivers and predictions. He’s got a lot of great things to say. Thank you for joining us again, Mr. LaCour. Mark LaCour: James, it is such an honor to be a repeat offender. You know I’m a big fan of yours and to be back here again is just, wow. Let’s talk about 2015 and our predictions. We published this back in December. One of the biggest drivers for 2015 is low crude prices. We predicted back in December that it would actually get below $50 a barrel, which it did today. So we at least got that one right. Let’s talk a little bit about those low crude prices. There is so much misinformation out there. James Hahn II: Let me jump in on that. So the narrative that I know, and shoot even people that I’ve given it to outside of the industry, is the OPEC narrative and you’re saying that that’s not the case. So tell me about that. Mark LaCour: There’s two things going on wrapped around one thing that did not happen. People just don’t understand. The first thing is that OPEC did nothing. Nothing. They did nothing. They just did not cut productions. They did that for two reasons. For the followers out there that don’t quite understand what OPEC is. OPEC is a group of nations that control the price of oil and gas the same way DeBeers controls the price of diamonds. They do it by supply and demand. If prices get to low, they cut back production to get prices back up. The two things going on, number one is OPEC’s sticking a knife in Russia’s back while Russia’s down. OPEC got really upset over the whole Ukraine thing. And Russia supplies a lot the arms to the radicals that threaten these monarchies in OPEC. That’s the first that’s going on. The second thing that’s going on is there’s a handful of rogue OPEC nations. Angola, Libya, Nigeria, Venezuela. A while back when OPEC asked them to cut production, they did not do it. What OPEC is doing is punishing these rogue nations by pushing the price of oil so low these countries are going to suffer. It’s one of the things that were predicted, and it’s literally caused Venezuela’s government to be overthrown in 2015. That’s the two things that are going on with these low crude prices. And it’s a short term thing. It’ll last all through 2015 and halfway through 2016. You’ll see it get back up to $80-$85 a barrel. James Hahn II: For anybody, again I know we have several listeners that are outside of the business. So that we’re not talking all inside baseball, OPEC stands for the “Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries”, which is basically an illegal cartel. Mark LaCour: Yes. And, I’m sorry James. Go ahead. James Hahn II: No, go ahead. Mark LaCour: There’s a bunch things going on from a geopolitical point of view. OPEC, most of the OPEC nations that are highly productive nations like Saudi Arabia, they have a monarchy. The monarchy makes a lot of money from oil, but at the same time the monarchies in the Middle East have to keep the youth occupied. If they don’t the youth are the ones that will radicalize and threaten the monarchy. Even though Saudi Arabia is making a lot of money, they spend that money on huge social programs to keep the youth employed. Right now Saudi Arabia is not making any money. What they’re doing is dipping into to their savings account to keep these large social programs running. And you can only do that for so long. That’s how we know the price is going back up. James Hahn II: How do you come up with this radically different paradigm than the traditional storyline that’s in the press right now? Mark LaCour: Because we know, the industry, knows what’s going on. Here’s something a lot of people don’t understand. The reason OPEC is not trying to shut down US shale production is the US cannot export crude. It’s against the law. Our crude that our shale producers isn’t in the global markets, so it doesn’t threaten OPEC. Yes, we decreased the amount of crude oil that we import, but the rest of the world still consumes. And there’s a bunch of things all figured into that. China’s consumption of crude has slipped a little bit, so we have a surplus. And once again OPEC knows what they’re doing. They saw this coming, just like we see it coming. And a lot of the really smart analysts with all the super majors and the majors, saw this coming. So second, we have insight that just nobody else has, just to actually know what’s going on in the industry. James Hahn II: Got it. So give me a little background on the Russian issue. Because that obviously is a big deal here. Mark LaCour: Absolutely. We’ll talk about a couple of things. Russia’s economy basically runs on its ability to export oil, mainly to Europe. Russia needs around $80 a barrel to make money. So because of the Ukraine thing the US and Europe have imposed sanctions on Russia. They stopped a lot of the technology transfer and a lot of the partnerships, like ExxonMobil, to keep Russia from being able to drill and use new technology to get more oil out of existing wells. That’s crippling Russia’s economy right there. They also changed the way Russia’s oil and gas industry could tap into the global capital markets to finance these projects. That hurt Russia right now too. You have all that going on. Russia’s not making any money. Their inflation is going to through the roof. In fact, Russia’s National Bank had to raise interest rates to, I think it was 17%. What was happening is the people that had money in Russia would take the money out of the banks to put in foreign banks. They had to try and stop that. With all that going on while Russia is struggling and down, Saudi Arabia said, actually OPEC said this could this be a great time to stick a knife in Russia’s back. That’s what happened. In crude prices, there’s a lot things that could happen. On the service side of the house, yes a lot of the service companies that are serving frack fields are going to take a hit. A temporary hit. But what’s going to happen is the service companies that do work overs where they go back re-stimulate existing wells, that’s going to explode. It’s much cheaper to get oil out of existing wells than it is to go drill new wells. There’s things going on like the frac companies, the good frac companies, are learning that they could put wells closer together without cannibalizing production. Which actually means if it plays out correctly, that you actually see some increase in well drilling because the price of crude is low. Which doesn’t make logical sense, but it does from a petroleum engineer point of view. Make sense? James Hahn II: It does make sense. I’m going to push back a little bit, though. Because we are already seeing a ton of layoffs. A TON of layoffs. We’re seeing hundreds from, who is it? I don’t know, it wasn’t Baker Hughes. It was Halliburton, maybe? Mark LaCour: Yeah. James Hahn II: But maybe that’s cannibalization of their pickup of Baker Hughes. Talk us through that, though. Even if there are the good times when we look at the headlines, it’s hard to see an opportunity. Mark LaCour: Yes, a lot of that’s media spin. You had the big service company merger, and basically it was not a merger. Halliburton made Baker Hughes sell themselves to Halliburton at the price Halliburton wanted. Of course you’re going to have plenty of layoffs because you’re going to have a lot of duplicity there. A lot of duplicate and shared services, legal, HR whatever. There have been some layoffs, if you actually track through the news. The most expensive way to produce oil in the world is tar sands. There’s one company up in Canada that provides room and board for the employees of tar sands. They laid off about 600 people. By the time the news got that information the news headline read, “Oil and Gas Industry is Crumbling and Layoffs are Massive.” There are no massive layoffs right now. In fact, there’s still a talent shortage in oil and gas right now. We could probably sit here and talk about this forever, you and I, because we’re both passionate about this. But we also have 9 other drivers to try and talk about. James Hahn II: Oh my goodness, wow. What’s next? Mark LaCour: The next thing is new geopolitical risk. The oil and gas industry always had political risk in the Middle East. Since I was a little kid with the Arab Oil embargo that’s been going on. Now you have changing laws in Mexico and Argentina. You have the sanctions imposed on Russian that impact Arctic drilling. Then you have political unrest in Nigeria and Libya. All of this is new political risk in the oil and gas industry, and they’re going to have to, they’re going to struggle a little bit to try to figure out how to manage the risks. So that’s number two is new geopolitical risks. Number three. Technology. And man, when I say technology, it is crazy to watch the old-fashioned oil and gas industry start to adapt technology very quickly. Big data, digital oilfield, security, analytics, and all that stuff is being adapted because of lower crude prices. The oil and gas industry has to become more efficient. If you’re a technology company and you somehow impact operational efficiency you should be talking to the oil and gas industry because they want your stuff. Number four. Shortage of talent. And y’all have heard of the Great Crew Change, but it’s unbelievable the shortage of talent. The talent that’s in short supply starts with something called STEMS, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. That type of talent is in such short supply that 10 years ago every major oil and gas company in the world partnered with universities to build because they knew they couldn’t grow it anymore. I’m a member organization called Society of Petroleum Engineers. Now on Fridays I spend half a day volunteering at my local high school to help teach STEMS and talk about the oil and gas industry. Think about that change. It is to the point now that the oil and gas industry is talking to kids in high school about coming to work in oil and gas. If this trend continues in a few years I’ll be talking to kindergarteners about how they should go work for Chevron when they get out of college. It’s just crazy. James Hahn II: I’m glad you brought that up. As we made the transition into the into the rest of the drivers, that was really the next question on my mind. Tell us about this shortage. Because that’s not the, again just like oil prices, that’s not the traditional narrative that we hear. Mark LaCour: Yeah, what happens is the news media, or the media as a whole is not structured to tell you what’s actually going on. They’re structured to sell advertising. And what sells advertising better; horrible news or great news? James Hahn II: If it bleeds, it leads. I was in journalism school. Mark LaCour: I suggest that when hear someone panicking, go back to the sources and read what’s really going on. It’s not doom and gloom. Low crude prices are going to ramp up the US economy like you have not seen in a long time. It’s basically given every American a raise. The airlines all of a sudden are going to be very profitable. We’re going to see ticket battles. We haven’t seen that in 20 years. Manufacturing’s coming back because it is so cheap to manufacture in the US now. It’s all really good stuff. James Hahn II: I saw that 70 billion is the projected number that Americans are going to save in 2015 because of low crude prices. (complete transcript forthcoming…in the meantime, click play!) Mark is the founder of Modal Point, the oil and gas sales experts. He is coming off a record year in 2014. Even as oil prices plummeted he grew his business by 30%. He is our second repeat offender on the podcast. In his previous episode, number 12. You can find either in the archive or you can just go to <a href="http://triberocket.com/12" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">TribeRocket.com/12</a>, was the most listened to episode and show that we had, until Alan Gilmer’s 2015 projections, which I will also link up in the show notes. So, Mark LaCour is here to strike back with his 2015 business drivers and predictions. He’s got a lot of great things to say. Thank you for joining us again, Mr. LaCour. Mark LaCour: James, it is such an honor to be a repeat offender. You know I’m a big fan of yours and to be back here again is just, wow. Let’s talk about 2015 and our predictions. We published this back in December. One of the biggest drivers for 2015 is low crude prices. We predicted back in December that it would actually get below $50 a barrel, which it did today. So we at least got that one right. Let’s talk a little bit about those low crude prices. There is so much misinformation out there. James Hahn II: Let me jump in on that. So the narrative that I know, and shoot even people that I’ve given it to outside of the industry, is the OPEC narrative and you’re saying that that’s not the case. So tell me about that. Mark LaCour: There’s two things going on wrapped around one thing that did not happen. People just don’t understand. The first thing is that OPEC did nothing. Nothing. They did nothing. They just did not cut productions. They did that for two reasons. For the followers out there that don’t quite understand what OPEC is. OPEC is a group of nations that control the price of oil and gas the same way DeBeers controls the price of diamonds. They do it by supply and demand. If prices get to low, they cut back production to get prices back up. The two things going on, number one is OPEC’s sticking a knife in Russia’s back while Russia’s down. OPEC got really upset over the whole Ukraine thing. And Russia supplies a lot the arms to the radicals that threaten these monarchies in OPEC. That’s the first that’s going on. The second thing that’s going on is there’s a handful of rogue OPEC nations. Angola, Libya, Nigeria, Venezuela. A while back when OPEC asked them to cut production, they did not do it. What OPEC is doing is punishing these rogue nations by pushing the price of oil so low these countries are going to suffer. It’s one of the things that were predicted, and it’s literally caused Venezuela’s government to be overthrown in 2015. That’s the two things that are going on with these low crude prices. And it’s a short term thing. It’ll last all through 2015 and halfway through 2016. You’ll see it get back up to $80-$85 a barrel. James Hahn II: For anybody, again I know we have several listeners that are outside of the business. So that we’re not talking all inside baseball, OPEC stands for the “Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries”, which is basically an illegal cartel. Mark LaCour: Yes. And, I’m sorry James. Go ahead. James Hahn II: No, go ahead. Mark LaCour: There’s a bunch things going on from a geopolitical point of view. OPEC, most of the OPEC nations that are highly productive nations like Saudi Arabia, they have a monarchy. The monarchy makes a lot of money from oil, but at the same time the monarchies in the Middle East have to keep the youth occupied. If they don’t the youth are the ones that will radicalize and threaten the monarchy. Even though Saudi Arabia is making a lot of money, they spend that money on huge social programs to keep the youth employed. Right now Saudi Arabia is not making any money. What they’re doing is dipping into to their savings account to keep these large social programs running. And you can only do that for so long. That’s how we know the price is going back up. James Hahn II: How do you come up with this radically different paradigm than the traditional storyline that’s in the press right now? Mark LaCour: Because we know, the industry, knows what’s going on. Here’s something a lot of people don’t understand. The reason OPEC is not trying to shut down US shale production is the US cannot export crude. It’s against the law. Our crude that our shale producers isn’t in the global markets, so it doesn’t threaten OPEC. Yes, we decreased the amount of crude oil that we import, but the rest of the world still consumes. And there’s a bunch of things all figured into that. China’s consumption of crude has slipped a little bit, so we have a surplus. And once again OPEC knows what they’re doing. They saw this coming, just like we see it coming. And a lot of the really smart analysts with all the super majors and the majors, saw this coming. So second, we have insight that just nobody else has, just to actually know what’s going on in the industry. James Hahn II: Got it. So give me a little background on the Russian issue. Because that obviously is a big deal here. Mark LaCour: Absolutely. We’ll talk about a couple of things. Russia’s economy basically runs on its ability to export oil, mainly to Europe. Russia needs around $80 a barrel to make money. So because of the Ukraine thing the US and Europe have imposed sanctions on Russia. They stopped a lot of the technology transfer and a lot of the partnerships, like ExxonMobil, to keep Russia from being able to drill and use new technology to get more oil out of existing wells. That’s crippling Russia’s economy right there. They also changed the way Russia’s oil and gas industry could tap into the global capital markets to finance these projects. That hurt Russia right now too. You have all that going on. Russia’s not making any money. Their inflation is going to through the roof. In fact, Russia’s National Bank had to raise interest rates to, I think it was 17%. What was happening is the people that had money in Russia would take the money out of the banks to put in foreign banks. They had to try and stop that. With all that going on while Russia is struggling and down, Saudi Arabia said, actually OPEC said this could this be a great time to stick a knife in Russia’s back. That’s what happened. In crude prices, there’s a lot things that could happen. On the service side of the house, yes a lot of the service companies that are serving frack fields are going to take a hit. A temporary hit. But what’s going to happen is the service companies that do work overs where they go back re-stimulate existing wells, that’s going to explode. It’s much cheaper to get oil out of existing wells than it is to go drill new wells. There’s things going on like the frac companies, the good frac companies, are learning that they could put wells closer together without cannibalizing production. Which actually means if it plays out correctly, that you actually see some increase in well drilling because the price of crude is low. Which doesn’t make logical sense, but it does from a petroleum engineer point of view. Make sense? James Hahn II: It does make sense. I’m going to push back a little bit, though. Because we are already seeing a ton of layoffs. A TON of layoffs. We’re seeing hundreds from, who is it? I don’t know, it wasn’t Baker Hughes. It was Halliburton, maybe? Mark LaCour: Yeah. James Hahn II: But maybe that’s cannibalization of their pickup of Baker Hughes. Talk us through that, though. Even if there are the good times when we look at the headlines, it’s hard to see an opportunity. Mark LaCour: Yes, a lot of that’s media spin. You had the big service company merger, and basically it was not a merger. Halliburton made Baker Hughes sell themselves to Halliburton at the price Halliburton wanted. Of course you’re going to have plenty of layoffs because you’re going to have a lot of duplicity there. A lot of duplicate and shared services, legal, HR whatever. There have been some layoffs, if you actually track through the news. The most expensive way to produce oil in the world is tar sands. There’s one company up in Canada that provides room and board for the employees of tar sands. They laid off about 600 people. By the time the news got that information the news headline read, “Oil and Gas Industry is Crumbling and Layoffs are Massive.” There are no massive layoffs right now. In fact, there’s still a talent shortage in oil and gas right now. We could probably sit here and talk about this forever, you and I, because we’re both passionate about this. But we also have 9 other drivers to try and talk about. James Hahn II: Oh my goodness, wow. What’s next? Mark LaCour: The next thing is new geopolitical risk. The oil and gas industry always had political risk in the Middle East. Since I was a little kid with the Arab Oil embargo that’s been going on. Now you have changing laws in Mexico and Argentina. You have the sanctions imposed on Russian that impact Arctic drilling. Then you have political unrest in Nigeria and Libya. All of this is new political risk in the oil and gas industry, and they’re going to have to, they’re going to struggle a little bit to try to figure out how to manage the risks. So that’s number two is new geopolitical risks. Number three. Technology. And man, when I say technology, it is crazy to watch the old-fashioned oil and gas industry start to adapt technology very quickly. Big data, digital oilfield, security, analytics, and all that stuff is being adapted because of lower crude prices. The oil and gas industry has to become more efficient. If you’re a technology company and you somehow impact operational efficiency you should be talking to the oil and gas industry because they want your stuff. Number four. Shortage of talent. And y’all have heard of the Great Crew Change, but it’s unbelievable the shortage of talent. The talent that’s in short supply starts with something called STEMS, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. That type of talent is in such short supply that 10 years ago every major oil and gas company in the world partnered with universities to build because they knew they couldn’t grow it anymore. I’m a member organization called Society of Petroleum Engineers. Now on Fridays I spend half a day volunteering at my local high school to help teach STEMS and talk about the oil and gas industry. Think about that change. It is to the point now that the oil and gas industry is talking to kids in high school about coming to work in oil and gas. If this trend continues in a few years I’ll be talking to kindergarteners about how they should go work for Chevron when they get out of college. It’s just crazy. James Hahn II: I’m glad you brought that up. As we made the transition into the into the rest of the drivers, that was really the next question on my mind. Tell us about this shortage. Because that’s not the, again just like oil prices, that’s not the traditional narrative that we hear. Mark LaCour: Yeah, what happens is the news media, or the media as a whole is not structured to tell you what’s actually going on. They’re structured to sell advertising. And what sells advertising better; horrible news or great news? James Hahn II: If it bleeds, it leads. I was in journalism school. Mark LaCour: I suggest that when hear someone panicking, go back to the sources and read what’s really going on. It’s not doom and gloom. Low crude prices are going to ramp up the US economy like you have not seen in a long time. It’s basically given every American a raise. The airlines all of a sudden are going to be very profitable. We’re going to see ticket battles. We haven’t seen that in 20 years. Manufacturing’s coming back because it is so cheap to manufacture in the US now. It’s all really good stuff. James Hahn II: I saw that 70 billion is the projected number that Americans are going to save in 2015 because of low crude prices. His earlier experience as a teen roustaboout, because I was just listening to some hockey talk, roustaboout, for Bill Caesen Oilwell Services Inc., and later as a pumper and employee for D&amp;J Pumper and Well Services. It’s brought him full circle with the petroleum industry. Mr. Sheffield, thank you very much for joining us on the podcast today. Wayne Shuffield: Thank you, it’s very nice to join you. James Hahn II: We were talking before we got on about some of the things that y’all are up to in Colorado. I don’t believe that we’ve had a chance to dig into Colorado’s oil and gas scene just yet. So what’s going on up there in Colorado? Wayne Shuffield: Well, it’s an exciting area of growth in the oil and gas industry. The ability of technology to get into shale opened up the the DJ basin in a bigger way than it has in the past. The Niobrara Shale bed is about 6,000 feet under the surface. It stretches all the way up in the Northeastern part of the Colorado, and even on into Wyoming, Kansas, all through the area. There’s about four or five different pay zones in the DJ basin. We kind of planned it out and pitched our tent. We put down some roots in getting Earth Energy up in the DJ Basin. James Hahn II: How long have y’all been around? Wayne Shuffield: Well, the company itself started back in ’08 as a natural gas company with some work out in Northern Louisiana. Mostly unconventional drilling with methane. In the process we were dropping so fast that we couldn’t make a living, so we decided let’s look into some oil avenues. The DJ basin seemed to be to place most likely for us as our headquarters at that time was in the Colorado area. We are now moved up to Estes Park, Colorado as our headquarters. We moved into the DJ basin in about 2010-2011 when we started doing our due diligence and taking up some leases throughout that area. We’ve really started plowing in about the last 18 months or so. James Hahn II: You mentioned falling prices, and we now have a falling price environment around oil. Being a smaller independent, are you more able to be nimble and shield yourself against risk that way? Wayne Shuffield: Well, yes. With the falling oil prices, obviously that impacts the entire industry. We don’t have any debt and have been picking up some leases. We have depth rights in all the different zones for the leases that we have. So the falling oil prices aren’t really hurting us as much as they might some other smaller independent companies that are there. Particularly because we’re building up our reserves, as a reserve company. As little capital as we need to have production to keep the company running and to build up our PUDs around proven and probables, around all of those wells, then we’re still in good shape. In fact, it’s helping us a little bit. With the drilling prices, lease prices, and well servicing prices coming down a little bit for us. James Hahn II: Are people a little more surprised when you knock on the door and you’re ready to give them a good lease given the environment? Alex is the founder of Pedigree Technologies. Pedigree Technologies enables intelligent operations in oilfield by getting ability to track locate and monitor all of your equipment and basically coordinate all of your operations in real time. He is joining us from that the heart of the Bakken up there in Fargo, North Dakota and has graciously given us some time today. Alex Warner, thank you very much for joining us on the podcast. Alex Warner: Thanks for having me. James Hahn II: I’m really fascinated because we met at the Texas Showdown out in Grapevine and right away it was obvious you are very much statistic driven. I can tell that’s a passion of yours, making sure that you can track everything. Give us your story on Pedigree Technologies. How long you been around and what was the genesis of this idea? Alex Warner: We started the company in 2004. I actually grew up on a farm in North Dakota and decided I wanted to get into the tech business. So I went to work in Los Angeles and Minneapolis and I got interested in networking technologies of the whole of technology spectrum. I did some work for Microsoft, and I worked for some some companies out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, consulting companies. I realize that we’re going to be networking all kinds of things beyond what we normally consider networking, cell phones and laptops. So we’re gonna connect all kinds of sensor-enabled things to the Internet. Some of these things, people are aware of a brand name like OnStar. But if you can imagine OnStar for generators. OnStar for mud pumps. OnStar for frac tanks. So that we can basically get information through the web through wireless technologies into cost-effective hardware technologies. To understand where our equipment is, how it’s running, where our people are, and coordinate our operations. We started to build system software that would do that, and it caught the attention of the Department of Defense. We had some prototypes we had delivered in various industries. They called and said, “We could really use this. It’s a new kind of approach to how we can use sensing technology to understand operations better.” We ended up working for NavAir for a division that was more on surveillance in which they called this kind of technology “sense and respond operations”, or “sense and respond surveillance”. We built a system that would connect to UAV drones to unattended battlefield sensors out in the field that look like rocks, and to sensors on war fighters and soldiers. We pulled that into what they call “common operating pictures” so they can see what’s going on. And if there’s any problem areas we can send some guys to check it out without having to have soldiers up and on borders in the most remote areas. We did that for the military for a number of years, and then we took that technology and we transitioned into several sectors, one of them being oil and gas; upstream, midstream, as well as downstream. It was such a perfect fit because the complexity of the oil and gas operations in coordinating efficient cost-effective highly coordinated operations is one of the goals, as well as very safe operations in oil and Gas. This technology is a perfect fit for that market. James Hahn II: You have certain information that I can’t ask you about or I’ll get the CIA at my door, is that pretty much it? Alex Warner: Yeah, we had to get secret clearances and all that stuff, but the good news is we got military grade technology that was brought to the oil and gas sector without military grade prices. James Hahn II: That is exactly what I was thinking because I know from the 4.5 years that I’ve spent here in this industry that security is going to be the number one obstacle that you have to overcome if you’re selling a mobile if you’re selling any sort of mobile device, or any kind of thing that doesn’t plug directly into a wall. Security is always a concern. So, when people say military grade I have no idea what that means. Is there a  so it is there in layman’s way to break down how secure your technology is? Alex Warner: The technology is fairly secure. I don’t think you can ever stop looking for security, but we use a combination of different wireless and satellite technologies as well as hardware and software technologies that allow for secure information of data moving from the field to the back office and to people out in the field. And then delivered in such a way where we can prevent against, the usual suspects are denial of service attacks and another kinds of things that may slow down a system and render it inoperable. We had to learn those techniques for the military because they need systems that are working all the time and that’s just one component of what we do, but we deliver it to the commercial sector. We’re primarily concerned, in addition to making sure people’s data is secure, of using the data and turning it into usable information so people can make operational decisions and be very efficient in the way they run their businesses from day-to-day. James Hahn II: What’s an example of that? Break that down. Alex Warner: The solution that we just built with a company out of Canada called Titan Logix. Logix makes a tanker trailer sensor that can go into any tanker trailer for crude, water, and waste and chemical to monitor the levels to make sure that people are not having to run up and down to check tanks in the middle of icy North Dakota weather, or any other areas. And then make sure we understand how much fluid is moving and how much getting pumped out. So we integrated a hardware device into their sensor. We can monitor wherever that tanker is. How much is getting pulled into the tanker. Whether there’s any alarms are notifications on overflow. Whether there’s any inappropriate alarm where someone maybe is doing an authorized dump. And track that liquid, that crude, whatever it is moved to the supply chain. And calculate how much fluid is moving in and out from a precision liquid management supply chain both for upstream and midstream purposes. James Hahn II: When we’re talking about supply chain management what is the main problem solving for? Is it in terms of cost reduction? Is it in terms of securing assets? When someone engages engages the company what are the types of of pain points that they are typically coming to you for? Alex Warner: Most people want to figure out how to manage their operations on several different quadrants. How can we move equipment from point A to point B efficiently? How am I utilizing our equipment so we can monitor utilization? Maybe I’m a hot shot and I got 50 flatbed trailers and 10% my trailers are dormant most of the time. Maybe I don’t need those. We can monitor the usage of it. We can do maintenance of it. Those operational issues. Safety. Security. Efficient coordination of assets and people. Efficient precision management of liquids. We even have, in addition to getting data from all this fixed and mobile equipment, like a mud pump. How’s that? Is the mud pump operating correctly? We also have dispatch and mobile apps to be able to do things like electronic tickets. Or even have the sensor auto-calculate how much barrel, volume is moving out a tank. We’ll monitor fixed tanks and then automate the amount of crude that’s moving to transactionalize that and get that off in an electronic ticket or a bill-waiting. Alex is the founder of Pedigree Technologies. Pedigree Technologies enables intelligent operations in oilfield by getting ability to track locate and monitor all of your equipment and basically coordinate all of your operations in real time. He is joining us from that the heart of the Bakken up there in Fargo, North Dakota and has graciously given us some time today. Alex Warner, thank you very much for joining us on the podcast. Alex Warner: Thanks for having me. James Hahn II: I’m really fascinated because we met at the Texas Showdown out in Grapevine and right away it was obvious you are very much statistic driven. I can tell that’s a passion of yours, making sure that you can track everything. Give us your story on Pedigree Technologies. How long you been around and what was the genesis of this idea? Alex Warner: We started the company in 2004. I actually grew up on a farm in North Dakota and decided I wanted to get into the tech business. So I went to work in Los Angeles and Minneapolis and I got interested in networking technologies of the whole of technology spectrum. I did some work for Microsoft, and I worked for some some companies out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, consulting companies. I realize that we’re going to be networking all kinds of things beyond what we normally consider networking, cell phones and laptops. So we’re gonna connect all kinds of sensor-enabled things to the Internet. Some of these things, people are aware of a brand name like OnStar. But if you can imagine OnStar for generators. OnStar for mud pumps. OnStar for frac tanks. So that we can basically get information through the web through wireless technologies into cost-effective hardware technologies. To understand where our equipment is, how it’s running, where our people are, and coordinate our operations. We started to build system software that would do that, and it caught the attention of the Department of Defense. We had some prototypes we had delivered in various industries. They called and said, “We could really use this. It’s a new kind of approach to how we can use sensing technology to understand operations better.” We ended up working for NavAir for a division that was more on surveillance in which they called this kind of technology “sense and respond operations”, or “sense and respond surveillance”. We built a system that would connect to UAV drones to unattended battlefield sensors out in the field that look like rocks, and to sensors on war fighters and soldiers. We pulled that into what they call “common operating pictures” so they can see what’s going on. And if there’s any problem areas we can send some guys to check it out without having to have soldiers up and on borders in the most remote areas. We did that for the military for a number of years, and then we took that technology and we transitioned into several sectors, one of them being oil and gas; upstream, midstream, as well as downstream. It was such a perfect fit because the complexity of the oil and gas operations in coordinating efficient cost-effective highly coordinated operations is one of the goals, as well as very safe operations in oil and Gas. She works in sales at Century Graphics and Signs, which is based in Midland, Texas. She has been working with Century’s clients in the Eagle Ford Shale and Houston area for the past six years. Century specializes in well compliance signs, OSHA safety signs, pipeline markers, lockout tags, hascom labeling, windsocks, and all kinds of other things I don’t know what they are. I need to spend more time on the lease, where they also make traffic signs. But as we know, what happens on the lease stays on the lease. I met her out at the Roseland Texas Showdown in Grapevine where she was making her rounds with great initiative. I loved this marketing tactic. She came up to one of my client’s booths with an embroidered hat with their logo on it. And I said, “Man, I need to get you on my show.” So, Renee Wesbrooks welcome to The Oil &amp; Gas Digital Marketing Podcasting. Thanks for joining us today. Renee Wesbrooks: Thank you. Thanks for having me. James Hahn II: It’s my pleasure. As I said I was really taken aback when you came up. It might seem like a really simple thing, and I’m probably geeking on about it a lot more than I should because I’m a marketer and I’m just a geek in general. Tell me about that strategy. How long have you been doing that, and in how does it work for you? Renee Wesbrooks: Well, whenever we are going to attended a trade show I’ve found if you just walk around and talk to people sometimes you can develop some good relationships, and potential clients will develop from those conversations. It’s always nice to make yourself stand out and be a little bit different. Since our company, in addition to the signs that we do at the shows, we also do embroidery. I thought I’d look ahead at who’s attending the show, who lives in the area that I call on to see who potential clients might be for me. So I have our embroidery guy out in Midland look on the internet, and he’ll pull the logo down into a sample cap for me for those customers. Then when I go and introduce myself to them as I’m walking around the show I have something to give them that makes them hopefully remember me and that I had come James Hahn II: It was quite memorable to me because there was there were a few logos that were not easy to duplicate on an embroidered hat, right? Renee Wesbrooks: Yes, that’s correct. We have great and embroidery head, AJ, outs in Midland who heads up our embroidery department. He’s really good, he digitizes logos for us and can do a good job at pulling something off the Internet and making it look really nice and clean. Then we tried to pick a that we think it’ll really showcase well on. James Hahn II: I only saw it seemed there was a trucker hat. There’s more than one hat? Renee Wesbrooks: Oh my goodness, yes. We can do the mesh back caps that are really popular right now because it’s hot. We also do a lot of camo, oilfield camo is really popular right now. We do caps and bags that have that pattern on it. I don’t know how familiar you are with that. They actually have the oil derricks and gears that make up the camo pattern. It’s really unique. We also do a lot of licensed camo like gang guard and real tree. If there is a Out there that you like I’m sure we can find that the For you there’s a lot of different choices. James Hahn II: How long have you been employing this particular marketing tactic? You’ve been developing that region for six years now. When did you first do this sort of memorable exposition? “Let me make something for them before I go and talk to them” thing? Renee Wesbrooks: I guess I’ve probably been doing that for about three years now. In fact, one of my top customers right now is one that I couldn’t get in with when I went and made cold calls on his office. I go and I knew his name, but I was in Houston Texas calling a large corporate office and I was getting lost in the shuffle. So when I was at a trade show and I went and asked for him at the booth, he was there. I got to have a face-to-face conversation with him, and I was able to get him to give Century a shot. We’ve done a whole lot of work for them ever since then. And since then, it’s given me the motivation to keep looking for customers like that. I can think off the top my head, I’ve probably gotten 5 or 6 clients like that. James Hahn II: I love that because it speaks to a sales tactic I learned in my time at Drillinginfo, at least I learned the name of it. I think i’ve been doing it for much longer. But, it’s what we call a pattern interrupt. When you come up to an expo booth and you’re talking to the decision-maker, their eyes naturally glaze over, like, “Oh, here’s another dude to pitch me”. That was my experience at my first NAPE because I was just learning. It was a whole different experience going back and having a conversation starter, which was my podcast. Instead of going up to them and talking to them about my services. And it goes against my whole philosophy to go up to someone and think that I can move the needle in 32 seconds. So, talking to them about the podcast or producing content opens a that conversation. But also, it’s that pattern interrupt where you’re not really expecting it. Some people know that my business card is a stainless steel beer bottle opener, and it it doesn’t way of a small amount. It’s quite heavy, actually. And when I go up to a tradeshow booth with one of my cards, even if even if the person is far away from the booth, I will still move them over back towards that stand-up desk so I can slap that thing down and get the (THUD). And now they’re listening. That’s what I what I what I really take away from this this lesson is not only about how to be memorable, but also how to how to interrupt that pattern they’re going into just saying, “Okay, here’s another salesperson” and being able to push through that and start a conversation. Because until you start a conversation, you’re never going to sell anything. Am I right? Renee Wesbrooks: You’re absolutely right. That’s the whole key. When you’re at a tradeshow trying to engage many people who are attending that show in conversation you can talk about what you do. We do so many different things if you just walked by our booth and looked you might think, “I don’t need to stop at their booth.” But if we can get you to stop and talk to us, then we are more effective and we get more return from the tradeshow that we exhibit at. Another thing that we do is that we have a some very fun deca that have funny sayings on them. One of them says, “Notice: You Can’t Fix Stupid”. We hand those out at the tradeshow. If you are standing at the edge of your booth and somebody’s walking by and you hand them that, it’s a good icebreaker. The stop and talk to you when normally they may have just walked right past you. But if we can get them to stop and look at the sticker, talk about signs, let them know that we do that. Then we can also engage them in talk about other items. Other things that we do, like embroidery, and screen printing, and promotional items that we do. Is kind of sets us apart at a show. We also play music in her booth, so we make our booth fun. We try to make the whole experience something that people will remember. And when we do our follow-up email after a tradeshow, we always start out with that, “Notice: You Can’t Fix Stupid” tagline in our emails because that’s what people remember about us. James Hahn II: Is that actually the subject you put in, or where’s that messaging at? Renee Wesbrooks: I put it in the subject of the emails that I send out. it’s really funny, I always get replies to emails after a show. They were respondents say, “Yeah, I did remember your booth” or “that was hilarious” or “yeah I remember can you send me more information?” So, it’s affective. James Hahn II: Absolutely. It reminds me of one of my little tweetables or ISMS that I live by these days. Because I always have to tell my clients to be more human. It’s hard for us oilfield folks. In person, we can totally let the hair down even if were bald, and totally let loose. But the whole business posturing thing is a little bit … Sometimes we take ourselves it much too seriously. At one point I said “I don’t want to be more human, I want to be as absurd as humanly possible.” Because that’s memorable, and that’s what I hear you saying with that subject. I’m going to have to do something like that myself. Renee Wesbrooks: Well, it sure makes them read your email. James Hahn II: That’s a great point. Also, I was thinking about that point about music. I always have my backpack with me. I upgraded at at at Winter NAPE in February 2014, for people that are listening to this decade from now. I had my my iPhone in my change pocket in my jeans. Which was a strategic move as well. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt at Winter NAPE where it’s just 25,000 middle-age men in suits. Middle aged white men in suits, I should say. So, I had my iPhone in there and I play Willy and Waylon and all kinds of stuff like that. Johnny Cash and all the good stuff. People look at me and say, “Is that … Do I hear Willy Nelson?” And I reply, “Yeah man, right here!” Then they’re like, “Oh man, you’re partying!” And next thing you know you’re having a conversation. So, I love that. I also wanted to move over because you were telling me before about the fact that you’re not just a warehouse. You build the things in-house. Tell me a little bit about your manufacturing process and what goes into that because that’s really fascinating. Renee Wesbrooks: Our home office is based out of Midland. That’s where we make all of our signs. We engrave our well signs out there. We screen print our signs, and we weld the frames. We also prints all over details and banners and lockout tags. We also imprint our wind socks that we sow. Everything we do is done out in Midland, which really makes our price is competitive because you are buying directly from the people who are making the product. She works in sales at Century Graphics and Signs, which is based in Midland, Texas. She has been working with Century’s clients in the Eagle Ford Shale and Houston area for the past six years. Century specializes in well compliance signs, OSHA safety signs, pipeline markers, lockout tags, hascom labeling, windsocks, and all kinds of other things I don’t know what they are. I need to spend more time on the lease, where they also make traffic signs. But as we know, what happens on the lease stays on the lease. I met her out at the <a href="http://bit.ly/1qKDXMq" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Roseland Texas Showdown in Grapevine</a> where she was making her rounds with great initiative. I loved this marketing tactic. She came up to one of my client’s booths with an embroidered hat with their logo on it. And I said, “Man, I need to get you on my show.” So, Renee Wesbrooks welcome to The Oil &amp; Gas Digital Marketing Podcasting. Thanks for joining us today. Renee Wesbrooks: Thank you. Thanks for having me. James Hahn II: It’s my pleasure. As I said I was really taken aback when you came up. It might seem like a really simple thing, and I’m probably geeking on about it a lot more than I should because I’m a marketer and I’m just a geek in general. Tell me about that strategy. How long have you been doing that, and in how does it work for you? Renee Wesbrooks: Well, whenever we are going to attended a trade show I’ve found if you just walk around and talk to people sometimes you can develop some good relationships, and potential clients will develop from those conversations. It’s always nice to make yourself stand out and be a little bit different. Since our company, in addition to the signs that we do at the shows, we also do embroidery. I thought I’d look ahead at who’s attending the show, who lives in the area that I call on to see who potential clients might be for me. So I have our embroidery guy out in Midland look on the internet, and he’ll pull the logo down into a sample cap for me for those customers. Then when I go and introduce myself to them as I’m walking around the show I have something to give them that makes them hopefully remember me and that I had come James Hahn II: It was quite memorable to me because there was there were a few logos that were not easy to duplicate on an embroidered hat, right? Renee Wesbrooks: Yes, that’s correct. We have great and embroidery head, AJ, outs in Midland who heads up our embroidery department. He’s really good, he digitizes logos for us and can do a good job at pulling something off the Internet and making it look really nice and clean. Then we tried to pick a that we think it’ll really showcase well on. James Hahn II: I only saw it seemed there was a trucker hat. There’s more than one hat? Renee Wesbrooks: Oh my goodness, yes. We can do the mesh back caps that are really popular right now because it’s hot. We also do a lot of camo, oilfield camo is really popular right now. We do caps and bags that have that pattern on it. I don’t know how familiar you are with that. They actually have the oil derricks and gears that make up the camo pattern. It’s really unique. We also do a lot of licensed camo like gang guard and real tree. If there is a Out there that you like I’m sure we can find that the For you there’s a lot of different choices. James Hahn II: How long have you been employing this particular marketing tactic? You’ve been developing that region for six years now. When did you first do this sort of memorable exposition? “Let me make something for them before I go and talk to them” thing? Renee Wesbrooks: I guess I’ve probably been doing that for about three years now. In fact, one of my top customers right now is one that I couldn’t get in with when I went and made cold calls on his office. I go and I knew his name, but I was in Houston Texas calling a large corporate office and I was getting lost in the shuffle. So when I was at a trade show and I went and asked for him at the booth, he was there. I got to have a face-to-face conversation with him, and I was able to get him to give Century a shot. We’ve done a whole lot of work for them ever since then. And since then, it’s given me the motivation to keep looking for customers like that. I can think off the top my head, I’ve probably gotten 5 or 6 clients like that. James Hahn II: I love that because it speaks to a sales tactic I learned in my time at Drillinginfo, at least I learned the name of it. I think i’ve been doing it for much longer. But, it’s what we call a pattern interrupt. When you come up to an expo booth and you’re talking to the decision-maker, their eyes naturally glaze over, like, “Oh, here’s another dude to pitch me”. That was my experience at my first NAPE because I was just learning. It was a whole different experience going back and having a conversation starter, which was my podcast. Instead of going up to them and talking to them about my services. And it goes against my whole philosophy to go up to someone and think that I can move the needle in 32 seconds. So, talking to them about the podcast or producing content opens a that conversation. But also, it’s that pattern interrupt where you’re not really expecting it. Some people know that my business card is a stainless steel beer bottle opener, and it it doesn’t way of a small amount. It’s quite heavy, actually. And when I go up to a tradeshow booth with one of my cards, even if even if the person is far away from the booth, I will still move them over back towards that stand-up desk so I can slap that thing down and get the (THUD). And now they’re listening. That’s what I what I what I really take away from this this lesson is not only about how to be memorable, but also how to how to interrupt that pattern they’re going into just saying, “Okay, here’s another salesperson” and being able to push through that and start a conversation. Because until you start a conversation, you’re never going to sell anything. Am I right? Renee Wesbrooks: You’re absolutely right. That’s the whole key. When you’re at a tradeshow trying to engage many people who are attending that show in conversation you can talk about what you do. We do so many different things if you just walked by our booth and looked you might think, “I don’t need to stop at their booth.” But if we can get you to stop and talk to us, then we are more effective and we get more return from the tradeshow that we exhibit at. Another thing that we do is that we have a some very fun deca that have funny sayings on them. One of them says, “Notice: You Can’t Fix Stupid”. We hand those out at the tradeshow. If you are standing at the edge of your booth and somebody’s walking by and you hand them that, it’s a good icebreaker. The stop and talk to you when normally they may have just walked right past you. But if we can get them to stop and look at the sticker, talk about signs, let them know that we do that. Then we can also engage them in talk about other items. Other things that we do, like embroidery, and screen printing, and promotional items that we do. Is kind of sets us apart at a show. We also play music in her booth, so we make our booth fun. We try to make the whole experience something that people will remember. And when we do our follow-up email after a tradeshow, we always start out with that, “Notice: You Can’t Fix Stupid” tagline in our emails because that’s what people remember about us. James Hahn II: Is that actually the subject you put in, or where’s that messaging at? Renee Wesbrooks: I put it in the subject of the emails that I send out. it’s really funny, I always get replies to emails after a show. They were respondents say, “Yeah, I did remember your booth” or “that was hilarious” or “yeah I remember can you send me more information?” So, it’s affective. James Hahn II: Absolutely. It reminds me of one of my little tweetables or ISMS that I live by these days. Because I always have to tell my clients to be more human. It’s hard for us oilfield folks. In person, we can totally let the hair down even if were bald, and totally let loose. But the whole business posturing thing is a little bit … Sometimes we take ourselves it much too seriously. At one point I said “I don’t want to be more human, I want to be as absurd as humanly possible.” Because that’s memorable, and that’s what I hear you saying with that subject. I’m going to have to do something like that myself. Renee Wesbrooks: Well, it sure makes them read your email. James Hahn II: That’s a great point. Also, I was thinking about that point about music. I always have my backpack with me. I upgraded at at at Winter NAPE in February 2014, for people that are listening to this decade from now. I had my my iPhone in my change pocket in my jeans. Which was a strategic move as well. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt at Winter NAPE where it’s just 25,000 middle-age men in suits. Middle aged white men in suits, I should say. So, I had my iPhone in there and I play Willy and Waylon and all kinds of stuff like that. Johnny Cash and all the good stuff. People look at me and say, “Is that … Do I hear Willy Nelson?” And I reply, “Yeah man, right here!” Then they’re like, “Oh man, you’re partying!” And next thing you know you’re having a conversation. So, I love that. I also wanted to move over because you were telling me before about the fact that you’re not just a warehouse. You build the things in-house. Tell me a little bit about your manufacturing process and what goes into that because that’s really fascinating. Renee Wesbrooks: Our home office is based out of Midland. That’s where we make all of our signs. We engrave our well signs out there. We screen print our signs, and we weld the frames. We also prints all over details and banners and lockout tags. We also imprint our wind socks that we sow. Everything we do is done out in Midland, which really makes our price is competitive because you are buying directly from the people who are making the product.
