In today’s social media, comment on everything, post the best family image possible, it is hard to feel competent, successful, and happy with your parenting choices. Want to watch a social media frenzy, comment on someone’s parenting style, or suggest and idea that is outside of the OG’s post. Even worse is the sanctimonious, preachy, commentary from people who think they have all the answers and missed the memo that telling people “my kids are better that yours” is just obnoxious. Seriously, I know this will work because I am now looking back from the other side, my three children are now in their 20’s and hindsight is always fantastic. My 20 year plan of parenting has come to an end however I am blessed to work with children and families every day. Writing on the slate of a child, is the single most important thing any parent or adult for that matter will ever do. There are certainly things I wish I could erase, permanently, and others that have faded over time. For the most part however, I do believe that with hard work, dedication, sacrifice and love I was able to do the best I possibly could. I am not a parenting expert and I hate when people refer to me that way. The only parenting experts live in their homes, with their children – don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. My singular advantage in giving parenting advice is volume. In my 30 year career I estimate that I have worked with thousands, maybe even tens of thousands of children and families. I use this experience to narrow down common problems and situations and offer solutions with multiple options.
