On this week’s episode of the B&amp;H Photography Podcast, we focus on the work of photographer Todd Webb and, specifically, the series of images he created in Africa in 1958, while on assignment for the United Nations. We are joined by Betsy Evans Hunt, the Executive Director of the Todd Webb Archive, and by Aimée Bessire and Erin Hyde Nolan, coauthors of the new book,  Todd Webb in Africa—Outside the Frame. With our guests, we discuss the photographic career of Todd Webb, including his work in New York and Paris in the 1940s and 1950s, and the founding and mission of the Todd Webb Archive. Our primary topic, however, is the rediscovery (in a steamer trunk) and eventual archiving and publishing of Webb’s photographs taken in several African nations over the course of a multi-month assignment organized by the United Nations. The images are notable not only for their fateful recovery but for their large and medium format color composition and intelligent eye; they tell a vibrant story of Africa at a moment between colonization and independence. With authors Bessire and Nolan, we discuss the making of their  book, which is both a photography book of unique vision and a multifaceted study of the images themselves, with essays and interviews providing historical context and cultural and artistic analysis. Todd Webb, né en 1905, aurait pu rester banquier toute sa vie mais la crise de 1929 a changé son destin. Il quitte New York, s'achète une mule et une tente, et s'installe sur les collines de Californie. A 35 ans, il touche pour la première fois un appareil photo. L'année suivante, il est engagé par l'Etat pour photographier les parcs nationaux, puis, pendant la guerre, les marines de la Navy. En 1955, grâce à une bourse de la Fondation Guggenheim, il traverse les Etats-Unis à pied et fait un portrait de la diversité américaine avec tendresse et malice. Peu enclin à faire fructifier son travail sur le marché de l'art, il tombe dans l'oubli jusqu'à ce qu'une galeriste américaine entreprenne de valoriser son travail… et nous permette de le découvrir avec bonheur.On parle donc d'art, comme tous les jeudis, dans les Matins Jazz. Aujourd'hui, Jean-Christophe Castelain, le directeur du Journal des Arts, nous éclaire au sujet du rapport sur l'accès à la culture qui vient d'être remis au Premier Ministre par la députée Aurore Bergé et nous conseille de cultiver, l'otium, le loisir studieux et désintéressé (cf. le livre de Jean-Miguel Pire paru chez Actes Sud).On se penche aussi sur les 50 ans que le contrebassiste Avishai Cohen va fêter pendant toute l'année dans 50 pays différents, sans oublier les 50 ans du pianiste Eric Legnini (c'est aujourd'hui!).

In this episode,  George Aquino welcomes in Todd Webb, Executive Chef at JW Marriott in Grand Rapids.  Todd recalls his early days working at resorts throughout Norther Michigan and how those experiences led him to where he is today.   The stories of his extensive travels over the years gives us a fascinating look at how food is viewed by different cultures around the world.  George and Chef Webb also give us an in depth look at the current culinary scene in Grand Rapids.
