Legendary portrait artist Everett Raymond Kinstler died on Sunday, May 26, 2019. At the time of his death, Mr. Kinstler had been a member of The National Arts Club for over 70 years, where he lived and worked since 1947. He painted over 2,000 of his subjects at his studio at the Club and many of his works are included in its permanent collection. Last fall, he was honored at the Club’s 120th anniversary celebration for his outstanding career and commitment to the arts. Before the ceremony he sat down to discuss his journey from inking comic books as a teen to painting the portraits eight U.S. Presidents, six U.S. governors, more than fifty cabinet officers, and a panoply of well-known personalities including Marian Anderson, Tony Bennett, James Cagney, Katharine Hepburn, Arthur Miller, Paul Newman, John Wayne, Tennessee Williams, and Tom Wolfe. Along with The NAC, his works appear in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, The Brooklyn Museum, and the White House.
