Why do good people do nothing or stay silent in the face of wrongdoing? Catherine Sanderson has studied the factors that influence our tendency to remain bystanders. She’ll share how we can understand and resist that pressure in our own lives, and become a voice for positive change.

Catherine A. Sanderson is the Manwell Family Professor of Life Sciences (Psychology) at Amherst College. She has published college and K-12 health textbooks; and trade books on parenting as well as how mindset influences happiness, health, and even how long we live (The Positive Shift).

Professor Sanderson speaks regularly for public and corporate audiences on topics such as the science of happiness, the power of emotional intelligence, the art of aging well, and the psychology of courage and inaction. She’s been featured in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, CNN, and CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley. She also writes a weekly blog for Psychology Today - Norms Matter - that examines the power of social influence on virtually all aspects of our lives.

WELCOME TO EPISODE #106 OF THE ENRICH YOUR SOUL PODCAST

We are truly in unprecedented times.

COVID-19 has gripped our world in a way that nothing else has in almost a century. As we face uncertain timing, scaling issues and a potentially disastrous economy, we have lots of things to stress about.

So, what better time to talk about being intentionally happy?

In these times, as with any sort of conflict, mindfulness of your emotions and intentionally taking control back is absolutely critical. Being able to flex and navigate your emotions can keep your energy up, your focus sharp, and your life in tact.

In this episode, I discuss key elements of how to maintain happiness in a period of chaos, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, with renowned expert, Dr. Catherine Sanderson. These tactics will allow you to turn the tide on your anxiety and maintain a stronger level of positivity.

Professor Sanderson speaks regularly for public and corporate audiences on topics such as the science of happiness, the power of emotional intelligence, the mind-body connection, and the psychology of good and evil. These talks have been featured in numerous mainstream media outlets, including The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, CNN, and CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley. She also writes a blog for Psychology Today - Norms Matter - that examines the power of social influence on virtually all aspects of our lives.

A Ted Talk alumni, her presentation on “The Psychology of Inaction” is one of my favorite eye-opening conversations.

87: Why Your Aren't Happy and How to Change it | Dr. Catherine Sanderson

What is happiness? It’s amazing to think that we live in a society where we literally need to be trained on how to be happy! This area caught my interest when I was reading into the neuroscience of depression. So I went on to read many articles and literature and came about this book called, The Positive Shift, written by Catherine Sanderson and I knew that she had to come onto the podcast. Catherine got her Phd from Princeton University and in this episode she is going to talk to us about the science of happiness and how we are responsible every single day for making ourselves happy. Just like I say with motivation, you can’t just wake up and have it, you have to generate it which is just the same as happiness. You can’t just expect to magically be happy you have to put in the work! As always, if you enjoy this episode please screen shot it and pop it up in your Instagram story or leave a review on apple iTunes!
