Dr. Lim explains that many signaling proteins are built from simple modules arranged in different ways.  Some modules are catalytic and transmit information (for instance kinase or phosphatase domains) while others are interaction modules that regulate information flow (for example protein-protein interaction domains).  By rearranging these modules, LIm’s lab has reprogrammed signaling pathways to generate novel cell behavior. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his PhD from MIT. Today, Lim’s lab focuses on the molecular logic of signaling systems and understanding the underlying principles that govern the design, function, and evolution of cell-cell signaling.

About this talk:In 2007, the UCSF iGEM program was started to give talented students from San Francisco's Abraham Lincoln High School a unique summer research experience while providing graduate students and post-docs at UCSF with valuable mentoring and teaching experience.  Organized by Connie Lee, and led by Veronica Zepeda UCSF Education Coordinator, the high school team works with UCSF researchers to design and implement a synthetic biology project that they take to the annual International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition.  In this video, UCSF professor Wendell Lim and Lincoln High School biotechnology teacher George Cachianes describe how they started the program and why they stay involved, and students who participated in the 2012 competition tell us what they gained from the experience.  About the speakers:Wendell Lim is a Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Director of the Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology at the University of California, San Francisco.  He is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.  George Cachianes has been teaching biotechnology at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco for over 15 years.
