Baroness Newlove is the Victims' Commissioner for England and Wales. She became a campaigner after her husband, Garry Newlove, was murdered by several youths in 2007. Born in Salford in 1961 she grew up in a working class family. Having left school at sixteen she became a copy typist at a magistrate's court and later a committal court assistant. She met Garry when she was 20 and they married and had two daughters. In 1992, when he was just 32, Garry was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He survived and the couple went on to have a third daughter. The family lived in an area of Warrington which was experiencing an increase in anti-social behaviour. In August 2007, Garry went outside to investigate a disturbance and was viciously attacked by some youths in front of his three daughters. Three days later, the decision was taken to switch off his life support. Three youths were subsequently found guilty of Garry's murder and in the wake of the family's experience, Helen set up an initiative called Newlove Warrington to provide support to the young people in the area.She was given a peerage in 2010 and sits on the Conservative benches. She took up various roles in support of victims in the House of Lords, culminating in her appointment as Victims' Commissioner, a post she took up in 2013. The Parole: Law, Policy and Practice in 2018 Conference was held at the Faculty of Law on 2 July 2018, hosted by the Cambridge Centre for Criminal Justice, and the Centre for Public Law. The Ministry of Justice announced a public consultation into the law, policy and procedure relating to parole which closes on 28 July. The purpose of this conference was to engage in discussions with leading figures in the field and to enrich responses to the consultation. Her late husband Garry Newlove was attacked and killed outside their home in Warrington by a gang of youths in 2007. Since his death, she has fought against anti-social behaviour and for the rights of victims and witnesses. In 2010 she took her seat in the House of Lords and later she was appointed Victims Commissioner by Prime Minister David Cameron. Her book, It Could Happen to You, is published by Mainstream Publishing.David Harris-Gershon is a columnist and writer. In the summer of 2002, during historic ceasefire negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, a bomb was detonated in a cafeteria at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The blast left David's wife with severe injuries and killed two of the friends who were with her. The experience sent David on a psychological journey which eventually led him to the family home of the man responsible. What Do You Buy the Children of the Terrorist who Tried to Kill Your Wife is published by One World Publications.Reverend Colin Still is a retired Anglican vicar who travels the world as a cruise ship chaplain with the Mission to Seafarers charity. He was recently the focus of a BBC documentary series, The Cruise, in which he travelled on the Balmoral on a 112-day world cruise with 1,700 passengers and crew, taking ninety-two services along the way.Producer: Paula McGinley.
