It's often in tragedy that we find our truest selves. And, that was where our conversation started with DC-based chef and restauranteur Emily Baran. In losing her brother only a few years into "real life," she was catapulted into a three-year journey to answer the calling to create community and belonging through food. Emily said good bye to the predictability of a stable government job, and instead pursued a career in food - one restaurant and one stepping stone at a time, until she would ultimately open NW-DC community staple, Moreland's Tavern.Emily is an owner who is still working the line; she never expects more of her staff than what herself is willing to give. She took care of her family - at home and at work - during a pandemic that wrecked an entire industry. She is a mom who has morning "chats" with her seven-year-old son, and is a boss that spends late nights running a kitchen, a restaurant and community hub that's the lifeblood of her NW DC neighborhood.Emily shook her head when I asked her to be on the show, asking, "are you sure?" Finding Your Why: Knowing What You Love and Living For It with Chef Emily Baran

The Russian Supreme Court recently declared the Jehovah’s Witnesses to be an “extremist” organization. The April 2017 decision has placed the Jehovah’s Witnesses on the same legal footing as terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda. Witness publications can no longer be imported or printed domestically, and the organization’s administrative center outside of St. Petersburg has been shut down and its assets liquidated. The court ruling has also had immediate implications for the more than 170,000 members of this Christian minority community in Russia. With their faith now officially classified as extremist, individual Witnesses have faced increasing harassment as they continue to conduct evangelism among their neighbors. The international organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, has appealed the decision to the European Court of Human Rights. In the meantime, the fate of Witnesses in Russia remains uncertain. This talk reconstructs the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Russian soil and what led to this court decision.
