Today on the 4th of July edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Jazmin Erving, daughter of Julius Erving or as we all know him, Dr. J. To say Josh was psyched to talk to Jazmin would be an understatement. To those of us who grew up sports in the United States in the 1970s and 80s (ahem), Dr. J was an almost mythical figure who transcended basketball and the NBA to become some sort of cultural icon. Muhammad Ali, Evil Knievel, Reggie Jackson and Dr. J dominated the cultural sports landscape with their extraordinary skills that made them icons in during the time of America’s bicentennial year in 1976. They were the ‘must see’ TV before there was such a thing. Let’s just say, if you haven’t seen the film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, you really don’t know Dr. J. We talked to Jasmin about growing up in Philadelphia and what it was like having a dad who was the biggest star in the city and also the entire basketball landscape. For trainspotters, we talk old school restaurants like Bookbinders and random Philadelphia 76er players like Mark Iavaroni and for a more macro view we talk about Julius days wowing them at the Harlem courts of Rucker Park, THE place to be seen one-on-one playing basketball and Jazmin having the run of The Spectrum, home to the 76ers when she was a girl. We also talk about Jazmin’s crystal business and perhaps one of the most remarkable stories to come out of the pandemic that we can think of. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we have a first and it’s a good one – a celebrity who is also an athlete. We talk to Jazmin Erving, daughter of one of the greatest basketball players of all-time, Julius Erving, or Dr. J. Named to ESPN’s list of Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, Dr. J captured the zeitgeist of the 1970s with his graceful moves in the ABA and his spectacular dunking ability that thrilled hoop fans coast to coast. Before Bird and Magic, it was Dr. J who kids wanted to emulate in the 1970s. There were very few people who transcended their chosen field in the same way Dr. J did. He occupied the rarified heir of other 70s legends, Evil Knievel, Mohammad Ali &amp; Bruce Lee. We talk to Jazmin about growing up in Philadelphia in the 1980s where she was around for Dr. J’s retirement season, who her favorite Philadelphia 76ers player was, the film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh starring her dad, some classic Philly restaurants, how her father is featured in the Natural Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. and her own career as an entrepreneur, event planner and philanthropist. Josh tried his best not to nerd out too much in talking 70s basketball but it was Jazmin’s amazing story about founding her business, Because I Rock during Covid that really made an impression. Getting a peek into the pro sports world was a real thrill but it was Jazmin who really lit it up with her humor, charm and personality. Take a listen.

Rarified Heir Podcast: Episode #40: Jazmin Erving (Julius Erving, Dr. J)

The life you have in the morning may not be the life you have when you go to bed that night. Those words, Mamas infamous words, have been playing on repeat since February 18th. The day that Mama transitioned. I somehow thought this could never happen, it would never happen. My Mama was a force of nature and she’d be here until the sun burns out, maybe longer than that. I imagined my Mama here too see my daughters have children. I believe that, knowing that she was approaching her 90th birthday. I believed that, knowing that her body was tired and she was ready to go home. She’d been ready for quite some time. I hoped that some miracle would happen. That she’s somehow become a full self again, mind and body. That she of all the people in the world could defy it all. She had escaped death many times before, she had pulled through many illnesses like a champ. Even this time. She had been sick for over a week in ICU. And somehow, she managed to come through in the end and have conversations with her children, her grandchildren. She had some jokes and fashion requests. She told us she loved us. I thought, along with my siblings that My Mama was a gangsta. A spiritual gangsta. A woman who’s faith and resilience could make it through even the worst health crisis. And then she didn’t make it. She didn’t. And I, the demure, refined, sophisticated and well adjusted, socially assimilated black woman that I am, became something I never imagined I could ever be. A black motherless child. a screaming hollering ranting throw myself to the floor, throw myself to my mothers feet, black motherless child. If it would have been filmed I would have my Oscar. In some of my clearer moments, this being one of them, I thought about this podcast. I thought about what I would say. How could I say it. When should I get back to it. It would be hard and I’m pretty much a mess. But here I am. This is the way I am now. I’m struggling with change. The biggest and most devastating change of my life. And that’s what this show is all about. So here I am. I’ll let you know how I’m doing from time to time.
