Highlights of Lessons Learned:  What to Look For In choosing a business, look for one that people want to buy and that they are willing to pay for, it brings the customer orientation to the business right from the very beginning. The second thing you have to consider when choosing a business is determining whether or not you can deliver a better product than the rest of your competitors. Your business has to be able to answer the question: how can we do this better in a way that matters to our customers and not just in a way that matters to us? The third is as yourself: Can we spread the word about it? How do we market this and sell it? The fourth question to ask yourself is: Can we finance the start-up of it? When deciding what business idea to go into, look for businesses that score well in those questions.   Expert’s Advice It’s important for people to understand that trial and error is okay and that engaging, seeing what happens, and figuring out what you need to adjust is how you learn especially if you’re doing something innovative. The key is to take small steps, evaluate and adjust. The most important thing a new business owner can do is to start. It doesn’t really matter if they start with a correct plan, it doesn’t matter that much how they start, as long as they keep moving forward. Every day that goes by that you stay in the same routine and you don’t begin to attempt something is an opportunity lost. The second most important thing a start-up business owner can do is to learn. Today, we have more resources that allow access to learning and expertise. The third important thing to remember is to prefer taking small steps over giant leaps. Start-up business owners must also be very conscious and intentional about allocating their resources. If he were to go back, Mark said he would take more risk and move much faster than he did.
