In 1997, Stone Temple Pilots were on the cusp of a major tour in support of their latest studio release "Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop", when frontman Scott Weiland abruptly exited to check into rehabilitation for drug problems. Rather than wait for Weiland to recover, the rest of Stone Temple Pilots connected with the frontman of obscure California band Ten Inch Men to record and tour without their beleaguered vocalist. They christened themselves Talk Show and released a self-titled debut in 1997, but failed to catch on among audiences despite a plush opening touring slot with Foo Fighters and Aerosmith. The album sunk into obscurity just as quickly as it arrived, and Talk Show disbanded in 1998 as Stone Temple Pilots reunited.Talk Show has gone down in history as a nebulous oddity in both the history of Stone Temple Pilots and 90s alternative rock in general, but there could be so much more. On a new Jukebox Zeroes Lilz and Patrick intend to find out. By 2001, post-grunge Floridians Creed were at their commercial peak as well as their most loathed by the public at large. Driven by Scott Stapp's stupendous ego, overwrought balladeering, and unsubtly evangelical songwriting, Creed enjoyed a level of hatred and critical disdain that is still felt even to this day, long past the band's relevancy.Then it all came crashing down (Even moreso than usual) with the release of their 3rd record, Weathered, an album that would keep the band afloat commercially, but earn their worst reviews until their 4th record in 2009, and more consequently spell the beginning of the end for Creed, who would break up amidst a series of Stapp-driven controversies that all seemed to pop up in the immediate wake of Weathered's release.It was inevitable that we'd eventually cover a Creed record on Jukebox Zeroes. There's no middle ground with Michigan-based hard rock quartet Greta Van Fleet. You either think they're the savior messiahs of rock &amp; roll music, or you think they're a pale cloying imitation of a bad Led Zeppelin cover band, or you haven't been paying attention. For such a fledgling band to have popped up from out of nowhere and inspire such concentrated amounts of equal parts praise and vitriol is a remarkable feat in these modern times, when rock music is increasingly less relevant.Their studio debut Anthem Of The Peaceful Army was no exception. Upon its release in 2018 they were treated to a wealth of criticism, a sizeable chunk of which was overwhelmingly negative; including a particularly infamous 1.6 out of 10 review from Pitchfork Media, and declared of Greta Van Fleet: "They make music that sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin and demand very little other than forgetting how good Led Zeppelin often were."Harsh words from a typically harsh publication, but are they deserved? Are Greta Van Fleet here to save rock music or just another cynical ploy towards nostalgia-fetishism?
