Podopolo for Social Interaction and Gamification, with Melinda Wittstock

Podcast Marketing Radio

There are so many podcast platforms and resources out there. You might have heard of some of them—Apple, Spotify, Google... ring any bells? Some of them are big players, attracting millions of listeners. Some might say the market is saturated for podcast listening platforms. But how about podcast interacting platforms? That's a whole other story. Melinda Wittstock's new app, Podopolo, is just that: a platform for podcast creators and listeners to interact with each other. In our conversation for this episode, Melinda acknowledges the saturated market, but also that none of the other players are doing what Podopolo is. This innovative app uses the best features of social media, gamification and incentives, and high-quality content to both drive social impact and to empower and enlighten people. Podopolo represents what innovation can do for the podcasting world. Melinda is no stranger to innovation as a five-time entrepreneur, building seven and eight-figure businesses in media and tech. She is also no stranger to podcasts. Her own podcast, "Wings of Inspired Business" was ranked #8 in Entrepreneur Magazine's top 20 business podcasts in 2020. We sat down to talk to Melinda about Podopolo and her general thoughts and ideas on podcasting for small businesses. She gave us a lot of insights into how podcasts can be a tool for connection and social change. Let's look at some specifics about Podopolo and its impacts on the podcast world.Podopolo nurtures interaction for podcast listenersYou know that moment when you are listening to a podcast and you have an "Aha!" moment? We've all had that. What happens next? Well, you might tell a friend or family member about it and tell them to try and scroll through to minute 21:23 and hear it for themselves. You might try to post about it on Facebook or Instagram, or you don't do anything and hope to remember it in the future. Podopolo seeks to bridge that gap for podcast listeners. The interactive platform actually allows you to clip a bit of audio and share it publicly or privately with other people in your network! Those "Aha!" moments from a podcast become a real conversation starter. Podopolo also provides recommendations tailored to your interests, allows you to keep up with friends, and engage in the conversations being started by podcasts. It's a platform for interaction between podcast listeners and hosts. In a way, it's a social media-like place for the podcasting world. But, unlike a lot of social media, podcasts offer greater depth of thought and inspiration, so Podopolo seeks to elevate conversations and interactions, focusing on what is positive, empowering, and honest.Podopolo sets up a virtuous cycle of content recommendations If you want to increase exposure and grow your audience, the algorithm is king. It's through an algorithm that our podcast platforms "learn" what we like and will recommend similar options. But, there is a known downside to this—algorithms can take the listener into an "echo chamber," where they become further entrenched in their ideas, unable to see truth or value in another viewpoint.Podoplo seeks to tackle this problem by carefully building its recommendations algorithm. Not only will it recommend things that you like, but will add in surprises—content you may not have found on your own that will actually inspire and help you grow. As you engage with a variety of content and the conversations around it, you continue to be connected with your community and seek out new ideas and viewpoints. This creates a virtuous circle, so to speak, rather than the echo chambers present in other social media platforms. Podopolo utilizes gamification for engagementEngaging with your audience is the ultimate goal for a small business owner looking to connect with their audience. Listeners want to feel engaged, too. At times, podcasts can feel one-sided, with the host communicating their ideas to the listener, with no chance for feedback. Community-building happens off-platform and on other social media channels, where the podcaster does not "own" their listeners. Podopolo utilizes gamification to increase engagement between podcast hosts and listeners. Gamification refers to using game-like tactics (scores, competition, prizes, etc.) to increase the user experience. In Podopolo, this might look like a podcast host offering contests or freebies for listeners. Or, it might be that by listening to a podcast about, say climate change, you are notified that 100 trees are planted as a result. These features can tap into people's motivations and create incentives to continue to engage with podcast content and other people in the community.Podopolo is for social impact and empowermentOne feature of Podopolo is that it has a strong emphasis on social impact and empowerment. We all know that podcasts can be an excellent medium for learning and engaging in important issues. But sometimes listening to a podcast can feel passive. Sure, you have the knowledge, but how can you act on it? To build tangible social action, Podopolo is partnering with charities that support the 17 UN Global Goals, to make a tangible difference. This is a way to elevate conversations that go on around social media and make positive change through engaging with new ideas being highlighted through different podcasts.Podopolo helps podcast creators succeedPodopolo is not just a platform for the listener, but for podcast producers as well. Since it is so focused on social interaction, it provides a platform to connect with your listeners. It's also a way to build a very engaged, niche audience to market to, which helps you increase sales for your products and services. Finally, you do not need to rely on other social platforms for a way to connect and converse with your audience. All that legwork you do—answering messages, running polls, collecting feedback—stays with you on Podopolo. That valuable data and audience information are yours to use and improve your podcast and business. Melinda's advice: Know your podcast purposeWhen we asked Melinda what advice she has for business owners looking to start a podcast, she quite literally took the words out of our mouths! Her advice is the entire topic of conversation on episode one of Podcast Marketing Radio: know your podcast purpose. Get really comfortable with your "why." Melinda recommends that business owners do the legwork to understand why you are starting a podcast, strategies you have for producing it, what revenue streams you will create, and how you can build meaningful connections with guests and collaborators. Knowing your purpose behind starting a podcast will help you push through the challenges and truly access the benefits it can have on your small business."We believe that podcasting is more fun with friends... Content is at its best when it's community, and when it's conversation."-Melinda Wittstock Connect with Melinda WittstockPodopolo Instagram: @podopoloPersonal Instagram: @melindawittstock2020Podopolo Facebook: @podopolonetworkPersonal Facebook: @iammelindawittstockPodopolo Twitter: @podopolonetworkPersonal Twitter: @melindawingsPodopolo Website: www.podopolo.comPersonal Website: www.melindawittstock.comResources mentioned on this episodeMelinda Wittstock's podcast, Wings of Inspired Business, interviews women entrepreneurs who have built successful 6, 7, 8-figure businesses. The Podopolo App is available for free download on Apple and Android.Episode one of Podcast Marketing Radio is all about finding your podcast purpose, your "why." 140: A Woman on a Mission with Melinda Wittstock and Erin Shaw on Change It Up Radio with Paula Shaw

Change It Up Radio

Today we’re talking about women in business and the latest state-of-the-art podcast platform. If you're a podcaster, then you know just how challenging it can be to build an engaged listenership, accurately track audience data and insights, find sponsorships, and make a profit from podcasting. The reality is that 85% of podcasters don't make any money from their podcast, and 95% don't land a single advertising or sponsorship opportunity. My powerhouse of a guest, Melinda Wittstock, is here to change that. When growing her own podcast, she was deeply inspired to change the game for podcasting. So, she set out on a mission to do just that... and that's when Podopolo was born! Podopolo™ is the world's first socially interactive and gamified podcast app and network created to share revenue with podcasters, provide them with audience insights, and match them with targeted podcast network advertising, sponsorship, and premium opportunities to make money and grow their show much faster. Their mission is all about enlightening and empowering people, one podcast at a time while putting profit and power into the hands of independent content creators so they can be paid what they deserve. My daughter, Erin Shaw, also joins me for our weekly segment of Rut Busters. While we normally use this segment to share new challenges each week that can help you get your creativity and energy flowing, today, Erin takes this time to initiate a very important conversation about police violence in America, touching on topics of victim-blaming, police accountability, and the mental health of police officers.
