Today, we’d like to welcome Charles Walker, Professor of History and former Director of the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas at the University of California, Davis. He held the MacArthur Foundation Endowed Chair in International Human Rights from 2015 to 2020. Professor Walker has published widely on Latin American social, cultural, and intellectual history, with a focus on the Andean region.He is the co-editor of The Lima Reader (Duke University Press, 2017) and co-editor and co-translator of In Search of an Inca: Identity and Utopia in the Andes (Cambridge University Press, 2010). He is the author of The Tupac Amaru Rebellion (Harvard University Press, 2014), Diálogos con el Perú: Ensayos de Historia (Fondo Editorial del Pedagógico San Marcos, 2009), Shaky Colonialism: The 1746 Earthquake-Tsunami in Lima Peru and its Long Aftermath (Duke University Press, 2008), and Smoldering Ashes: Cuzco and the Creation of Republican Peru, 1780-1840 (Duke University Press, 1999). The book under discussion today, Witness to the Age of Revolution: The Odyssey of Juan Bautista Tupac Amaru, was published in 2020 by Oxford University Press. A part of Oxford University Press’s ‘Graphic History Series’, the book combines historical commentary by Walker with illustrations by Liz Clarke. The book is the winner of an Association of American Publishers 2021 Prose Award in the category nonfiction graphic novels. Witness to the Age of Revolution is now available in Spanish translation under the title, La Odisea De Juan Bautista Túpac Amaru. Un Testigo De La Era De Las Revoluciones.In September of 2020, I spoke with Professor Walker about his new book. We spoke about Juan Bautista Tupac Amaru, the half-brother of the famous Andean revolutionary Tupac Amaru II, and how his life and experiences provide a valuable lens through which to view the Tupac Amaru Rebellion and the Global Age of Revolutions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Meet and Greets are open on a drop-in basis; no reservation required.Our hosts thank Jessica (Art Librarian) and Charles for joining us on this episode of the Audissey!About the Artist:Charles “ChuckJay” Walker is from San Jose, CA where he and his three sisters were raised by Charles and Felicia Walker. Brought up in the church by a COGIC State Organist father, Charles was heavily influenced by Gospel music. He went on to graduate from Gilroy High School where he started his choir journey, and went on to study music at West Valley College and San Jose State University. He then started producing music and playing piano in 2015, after his father’s passing. He moved to Grand Junction, CO in 2016 for a fresh start and new beginnings.Wave 11, one of Grand Junction’s premiere bands, was formed in 2017 with former bandmate Zack Couron. Wave 11 released an album “Wisdom and Strength” and performed at many big festivals and local venues in Colorado. The band now consists of Derek Suiter and Charles Walker, providing a new high-flying hip-hop show that’s bound to make you jump! Charles also teaches private lessons for vocal singing, music production, songwriting, drums, piano, and music theory. While working at The Winery, he enjoys being able to provide music influence to the community of Mesa County and plans to continue music excellence at the highest plateau possible. He lives with his wife Zoe and daughter Winnie in Grand Junction, CO and enjoys being with family and friends.Charles Walker's dates of residency are May 2 - August 8, 2022. On this Month’s podcast we are joined by Sir Charles Walker Member of parliament for Broxbourne, Leila Bousbaa from the Coalition for Global Prosperity and Tom Tugendhat Member of Parliament for Tonbridge and Malling. Our first guest is Sir Charles Walker MP. Sir Charles was elected to the House of Commons in May 2005 and represent the interests of Broxbourne in Parliament. Since being elected, he has been involved in numerous local campaigns and in particular has championed the issue of mental health. He was appointed an OBE in the 2015 New Year Honours for political service, and was appointed a KBE in 2019, for “political and public service". His Parliamentary record demonstrates that he is not afraid to tackle difficult or controversial issues. Our second guest is Leila Bousbaa. Leila is the Coalition for Global Prosperity's Senior Events Officer and has a background in international development and climate change campaigning. She previously worked at The Climate Coalition as a Campaign Executive, overseeing all member relationships and leading on aspects of big campaign moments. Prior to this, Leila worked at the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development as a Parliamentary Assistant, organising the annual parliamentary reception. Col Tom is the MP for Tonbridge and Malling having been elected in 2015. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Reservist and also in a civilian capacity for the Foreign Office. He later served as a military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Staff. In parliament Tom is Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and is the head of the China Research Group.

Since being elected, he has been involved in numerous local campaigns and in particular has championed the issue of mental health. He was appointed an OBE in the 2015 New Year Honours for political service, and was appointed a KBE in 2019, for “political and public service". His Parliamentary record demonstrates that he is not afraid to tackle difficult or controversial issues. Our second guest is Leila Bousbaa. Leila is the Coalition for Global Prosperity's Senior Events Officer and has a background in international development and climate change campaigning. She previously worked at The Climate Coalition as a Campaign Executive, overseeing all member relationships and leading on aspects of big campaign moments. Prior to this, Leila worked at the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development as a Parliamentary Assistant, organising the annual parliamentary reception. Col Tom is the MP for Tonbridge and Malling having been elected in 2015. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Reservist and also in a civilian capacity for the Foreign Office. He later served as a military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Staff. In parliament Tom is Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and is the head of the China Research Group.
