276: Michael Zipursky—How Can Your Life's Journey Take You To Great Heights?
On the Brink with Andi Simon
Hear how to understand your customers' needs, then fulfill them It is always so enlightening to learn from other consultants how they do their jobs and how I could enhance my own consulting practice—as well as help you do the same. I was interviewed by Michael Zipursky on his podcast and thought it important to reciprocate and bring his ideas to you, our listeners. Michael speaks about his own journey, and it is a journey. At times he was in foreign lands and unable to speak the language, but somehow figured out how to break through the communication barriers to engage with others and help them grow their businesses. You will enjoy his personal and his professional stories, as they are closely interwoven. Listen and share! Watch and listen to our conversation here Some of the things we talked about: Michael's company, Consulting Success, is the worldwide leader in coaching and training for entrepreneurial consultants. How Michael and his cousin Sam Zipursky, also known as the “Zipursky Cousins,” are entrepreneurs, consultants, authors and strategic coaches. Together, over the past 20 years they have helped thousands of clients around the globe increase their impact, earn a higher income, enjoy more freedom and flexibility, and live a lifestyle they love and are proud of. Why "becoming" is more important than arriving or “being.” How helping others is a purposeful mission that inspires you to do good while doing well for yourself. Michael's life as a consultant, as I know so well, can teach us all a great deal about: The loneliness, and at times despair, of working hard every single day on building a new business with little financial results to show for the time and effort you're putting in. Feeling like an outsider, and not always knowing what to do next, as you “knock on doors” to grow your business. Imposter syndrome and second-guessing the value of your own expertise. Dealing with rejection while trying to keep a smile on your face. Neglecting family, friends and even personal health at times for the sake of the business. And yet, loving every minute of what you are doing. It is not about the destination. It is about the journey. How Michael grew his own business and then applied this to his clients: He and Sam hired mentors and consultants to help them with their consulting business, and what they discovered help them reinvent themselves. Things started to click and now they apply the best practices, systems, strategies and principles of success which they learned from those coaches and mentors. This fueled their success and has led to massive growth in business. Listen in and learn from Michael and me about how to really understand your customers' needs. It is not what you are selling them. It is what they need from you. Then check out Michael’s website, Consulting Success, and take a look at many of his consultant teammates. How Brands Can Overcome Chaos with Michael Zipursky
On Brand with Nick Westergaard
“There was a big group of people who were able to fare very well during this time and it was those who took action.” As CEO of Consulting Success, Michael Zipursky has worked with hundreds of clients across industries on overcoming the chaos and uncertainty this past year has presented. We discussed how brands can plan, pivot, and take action this week on the On Brand podcast. About Michael Zipursky Michael Zipursky is the CEO of Consulting Success® and Coach to Consultants. He has advised organizations like Financial Times, Dow Jones, RBC, and helped Panasonic launch new products into global markets, but more importantly, he’s helped over 500 consultants from around the world in over 75 industries add 6 and 7 figures to their annual revenues. Over 35,000 consultants read his weekly consulting newsletter. Michael is also the author of the Amazon Best Sellers ACT NOW: How successful consultants thrive during chaos and uncertainty, The Elite Consulting Mind and Consulting Success®, the book. Episode Highlights How do you prepare for chaos and uncertainty? Michael pointed out that, while we've all had to do this over the past year, this is often the case regardless of whether or not we're grappling with a global pandemic. Most are always dealing with chaos and uncertainty, whether from economic or geopolitical challenges. Who thrives in uncertain times? “We did a 2,800-consultant survey,” Michael shared, to get at this very question. First, they found that those who had an accurate assessment of their strengths and weaknesses thrived. “Those who were prepared—those who had a plan.” It all comes down to knowing your people, your community—building a list. But what if your list sucks? How can you fix it? “Start,” says Michael. You can't be afraid of the vanity metrics you see and the size of other lists out there. How do you start? Ask yourself: “What do they (your customers/community) most want?” Then spend your resources driving people to this lead magnet or opt-in. “It's not just about attracting the most people. It's about attracting the right people.” What brand has made Michael smile recently? Amazon! While this mega-brand can be challenging to some, Michael cited how responsive their customer service has been—even over the phone! Michael Zipursky on Building an Incredible Consulting Business
Conversations With Bacon
A while back when I was promoting People Powered, I was invited to go on a podcast all about consulting. As a consultant, it is rare that I get an opportunity to be interviewed about the business itself as opposed to the focus and subject of my work. Little did I know I would be interviewed by a consulting mastermind. Michael Zipursky runs Consulting Success and provides a range of services that help consultants run successful, profitable businesses. Outside of our interview, we became friends and I have learned a huge amount from Michael about what he has learned from working with hundreds of consultants. He has a great resource on How To Start a Consulting Business that I recommend. As such, I was thrilled that he was open to joining me on Conversations With Bacon. We get into a lot of really interesting discussion and topics, which include: How much experience is needed to be a consultantHow to find clients and business more effectivelyThe role of media and publicity in growing a consulting businessHow to approach adversity and challenges, especially when a solo consultantHow to balance being an expert and being a good listenerHow to structure what your value proposition is and what mistakes people commonly make…and much more… Be sure to give this discussion a listen! Communities are changing the way we do business. Discover a concrete framework for building powerful, productive communities and integrating them into your business. My new book, ‘People Powered: How communities can supercharge your business, brand, and teams’, is out now, available in Audible, Hardcover, and Kindle formats. As usual, thank you to the fantastic Marius Quabeck and NerdZoom Media for mixing the show! Listen Subscribe
