We're talking mental health this week with Chayim Newman and Zack Borer of Amber Health, a new venture designed to address the mental health crisis in the live music industry with broad-based solutions designed to ease the constant burden faced by the true road warriors out there working to present amazing live shows.  Chayim is a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Zack is a Marriage and Family Counselor and together, they work tirelessly to help those faced with tremendous stress on a daily basis. While last month was indeed Mental Health Awareness Month, Zack and Chayim are constantly fighting a battle and providing support to help stem this true crisis in mental health faced by those who bring us the live music we love so much. In the industry, the rates of depression, anxiety and suicide risk are 5-10 times greater than those in the general population, and this sobering statistic alone underscores how truly serious the problem is. At the outset, Amber Health was founded to analyze the mental health needs of artists &amp; touring professionals and develop resources to support them navigate their incredibly taxing line of work. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, its mission and scope expanded to create boots-on-the-ground support for the mental health needs of all music industry professionals. In this interview, we speak with Amber Health co-founder, Dr. Chayim Newman about the organization’s mission and evolution over time, and what it’s doing to support executives and artists alike.

And as the weather warms up and music festival season starts, so many artists will hit the road to do what they do best - share their music, live-in-person, with the world, and bring joy to millions of people. But the challenges of being a touring artist can take a terrible toll on creators’ mental and physical health. In a 2022 paper in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, Dr. Chayim Newman and Zack Borer - revealed some sobering statistics from a 239-question survey of more than eleven hundred touring professionals. They discovered that people working in the music industry have rates of depression, anxiety and suicide risk five to 10 times higher than the normal population. That’s an astonishing statistic, but probably not surprising to many of our members who spend much of the year on the road facing many challenges. Newman and Borer recently launched Amber Health, a company that offers a broad suite of mental health services to help treat the root causes of this mental health crisis and to provide solutions for the music industry. To date, with science-based research under their belt, they’ve worked with such organizations as the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, the Country Music Association, Live Nation as well as top artists in the industry. Dr. Chayim Newman &amp; Zack Borer are back to discuss mental health in the music industry. Between February and March of 2020 (prior to the work stoppage caused by the pandemic), over 1100 global music industry professionals responded to a survey, indicating exacerbated levels of stress, anxiety, and detrimental behaviors. Upon reviewing the responses and the infrastructure present in the industry, Chayim and Zack created an industry white paper, outlining where we are now, identifying tools and resources that currently exist to address these chronic concerns, and contemplating a blueprint for the road ahead. In our discussion, we talk about the role a governing body could play in mandating industry health and wellness standards, the importance of actionable items being prioritized moving forward, and the different ways members of the music industry can support these efforts as we get back to work.
