Duke Pieper was a youth hockey phenom who seemed destined for a long career on the ice. On the night of his first high school varsity game as a freshman, Duke suffered a cavernous hemangioma, better known as a brain bleed, and was ultimately given a 5 percent change to live. In his compelling book, I'm Alive: Courage, Hope, and a Miracle, Duke recounts his difficult and courageous struggle to survive, battling months of paralysis, multiple surgeries, massive nerve damage, and countless other setbacks. #30: The Duke Pieper Story

Duke Pieper was 15 years old when he was told that he had a 5% chance to live. It seemed that all the odds were stacked up against him. Except one, his determination. Through that determination and what is deemed as a medical miracle, he was able to survive multiple surgeries. Duke’s case is very rare. According to the Brain Aneurism Foundation, there are nearly 500,000 deaths worldwide each year caused by brain aneurysms and half the victims are younger than 50.Brain cancer, brain tumor, inoperable– -all words that make you only think of something negative, but Duke has turned those words into a positive. He has never given up. He hasn’t given up fighting and he never gave up on his passion for his education or his love for hockey. Pieper was a student at Hill-Murray High School as a varsity defenseman when he realized something was wrong before his first game. That is when he found out that he had a brain bleed and his whole life would change from that day forward.Duke has recently published a book, I’m Alive. All of the proceeds from his book go directly to his foundation, which empowers people to move forward with hope and courage in the face of adversity associated with life’s challenges. Duke is an incredibly inspiring person an I truly enjoyed the opportunity to interview him. I believe anyone that is lucky enough to spend a few minutes with Duke will have a more positive outlook on life. I hope you enjoy this interview featuring Duke Pieper.
