Many bird species in Hawaii have already gone extinct and many of those that remain are in severe danger of going extinct in the near future. It doesn’t have to be a cookie cutter system and it may change come baseball season, but it is important to have a system you can repeat week after week.Consult your calendar. Don’t plan a casserole that has to bake for an hour on a night when you’re getting home late.Use what’s in your fridge and freezer when choosing recipes - don’t just spend hours on Pinterest!Keep a running list of items that run out so that you can get everything in one shopping trip.Properly store and prep your groceries right when you get home.Batch prep as necessary to save some time - not necessarily cook everything on the weekend.Reflect, rinse, and repeat. The Bird Emergency

Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas and Pacific Rim Conservation are involved in an effort to ensure the survival of the Black-footed Albatross in the northern Pacific Ocean, conducting a tranlocation of the species to restored islands, after extensive pest control and revegetation efforts on suitable islands off the Mexican coast and the US territories, including Hawaii and Midway Atoll. A truly massive undertaking, and multi-agency cooperative effort! For World Albatross Day 2021, meet Federico Mendez from GECI Conservacion de Islas and Dr. Lindsay Young, Executive Director of Pacific Rim Conservation. The graphic above gives an idea of the scale of the project. The use of decoys encourage birds to establish a breeding presence on the newly pest-free islands. This is a view of the southern end of Guadaloupe Island, where some of the restoration works are underway. Here is a look at some of the extraordinary combination of vegetation types that were discussed. Has it been hard for you to build community during lockdown?Today we have Lindsay Young back on the show today to talk about building a community during a pandemic. Lindsay shares with us what it's like to move and cultivating a community before lockdown and how she would of done somethings differently if she had known what was coming.  We talked about how if she would of known that 9 months after moving that there would of been a pandemic that she would of focused less on work and more on building friendships and creating a community for when times were tough.  Lindsay shared with us that when reaching out to friends it's really good to ask specific questions, vs. just saying "how are you?", to ask "how can I pray for you?" that way it let's your friends know that you really care about their answer and that you are special to them. In the past Lindsay and I always talk about self care and so we touched on this topic again because it's super easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list when you are feeling lonely and sad.  That to take care of yourself is super important and to create routines around the basics so that you are starting off  the day the best way possible.  She likes to say it takes the negotiation out of it.  One topic that stood out to me is when Lindsay was sharing that it's always good to check on your strong friend, that many people feel like those friends are doing fine but they still need to know that you care.  Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast.If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check the first two episodes of this seriesMental Health with Melissa Sharpe.
